The contractor gave me an estimate and drawing of the work, which showed a good grasp of the work involved and conscientious attention to engineering detail and relevant codes. Another contractor provided a similar proposal, however, that had a slight edge, so we went with the other contractor.
Description of Work: Estimate was provided for re-building my front porch from scratch. The cost would have been around $30,000.

The sales service was great. The work was sloppy. As the pressure treated boards are drying they are twisting and bowing. Some boards are now touching each other on the porch flooring and others are as much as 1/2 inch apart. Many of the nails were never properly placed and are popping up as the wood is drying causing the boards to turn up on the overhang. They either did not use the correct nails or did not use enough nails. some of the nails were installed so close to the edges of the boards they actually split the wood. There is no uniformity whatsoever in the spaces between any of the boards and all the nails are randomly placed, many of them obviously not doing their job of holding things down. There were quite a few issues that were corrected upon completion such as boards that actually split under the pillars, door jam was shattered and replaced with bondo, one section of the flooring was uneven with boards you could actually trip over they were so uneven, house vinyl trim at flooring level needed some adjustment, but this new problem is not fixable as far as I can tell unless they start over. I expected much more from a company that has been in business as long as they have been. Some issues with clean-up too. They left nails on my drive way. Every single day they were thereI had to walk my drive and pick up what they left for the tires of my vehicles to find. I finally realized it was falling out of their work truck as they would get in and out or pull out tools.
Description of Work: New porch flooring installed on an old victorian home. Porch 38 X8 with four large pillars holding up second floor which had to be removed one at a time to install new decking. Went with regular decking instead of tongue and groove so water could drain. I wastold by sales rep that the boards would be placed close together so as they dried there would be little space between them whichwas what would look best.

The job went very well. The price was fair. They were prompt, and they got to it right away. They cleaned up after themselves every day. They went over every step with me about what they were doing. If I had any concerns, they came back the next day and took care of them. I was really pleased.

Overall, it went very well in spite of the constant rain and extreme heat last summer. I have absolutely nothing to complain about except a low spot in the concrete which collects water and mud, but other than that, we are pleased and believe this was money well spent. The Hermes Brothers (Kraft Company owners) came over soon after we called to take a look at what we wanted done. They gave us an estimate which we felt was reasonable, considering what had to be done to accomplish this project, and then they took it from there. We gave them a partial payment every Thursday or Friday, and the whole thing was completed in a matter of a few weeks. It was a pleasure doing business with and getting to know everyone involved in this project.
Description of Work: In the summer of 2011, Kraft Construction Company removed our old, tiny covered concrete patio and replaced it with a large covered concrete patio that is actually an integrated part of the house now. The work included the removal of the old porch and concrete, and the installation of huge round masses of concrete down into the ground on which to place the eight big, strong uprights upon which the roof and all that was built. We live on the side of a steep hill going down into a wooded ravine with a creek, so it had to be sturdy to prevent slippage. They had a designer draw up plans for all this so we could get it approved and obtain a building permit. There was so much time involved and so many people involved in this project that it is difficult to describe it all in detail. It also included a wooden stairway going down into the woods that the carpenter designed and built himself, as well as a low wall with drainage built with Allen Blocks to hold the backyard in place, which the same young man designed and built himself. The same young man also did the excavation work with the Bobcat and came back when all the mess was cleaned up and filled in and resodded the lawn that was torn up in this whole process. We were so impressed with his talents and extremely hard work. As you remember, it rained very frequently all last June, July and August, making some of this work impossible on some days. I wish I knew how to included before, during, and after pictures. All in all, we are so very pleased with our new outdoor living space. Kraft Construction Company is excellent to work with. The owners visit the site frequently, they let you know what's going on, they let you know what to expect to be done next, and who will be doing it. Everyone who came and worked on this project was just super high quality, and they worked so hard to get it done in a timely manner in spite of the constant rain delays and extreme heat.

Kraft worked with us to design a new floor plan and estimated the schedule at a very aggressive 8 weeks. They were on the job every day, all day, and all subcontractors showed up on schedule. The job was completed in just over 6 weeks! All costs came in per contracted price, and on the fly estimates for changes we wanted to make along the way were right on! The work was done to perfection, and Kraft doesn't pad their price with adders to the wholesale price of lighting and fixtures. Virtually everyone who worked on our job was extremely professional and helpful.
Description of Work: Remodel kitchen, family room, powder room, foyer, and laundry. Involved total tear our and total re-do with new floor plan and removed and replaced much of the drywall. New hardwood or ceramic tile flooring. All new cabinets and granite counter tops. Replaced 3 windows and two slider doors. Added additional lighting, ran a gas line for the range, re-routed heating ducts, and built an oak mantle for the fireplace.

Work started on time. However, our first week we received an incremental charge for the countertops (above what was quoted) we ended up with a charge of $300 for a sink bracket. (This sink bracket ended up as a couple of pieces of scrap wood nailed to the cabinets.)At the end of the job we were also given an additional charge for the sink plumbing. Glad we purchased sink, faucet, cabinets and tile ourselves because there seemed to be a trend of "add-ons" though out the project above the quote of the work provided. Overall, work was good but felt we had to stay on top of things for the details. Worker and project management communication could be improved. All day-to-day workers were professional, patient and friendly. Work was about a week behind schedule.

Greg Hermes came out to do inspection of the deck. He gave us an estimated price for the job right away so we could start planning for the job. After we confirmed plans, the job started a month later. We were (as always) happy with the professionalism and friendly nature of the staff. They are very easy to talk to and handle concerns or changes as soon as the words are spoken. They always treat my children with kindness. My husband doesn't feel like he has to over see everything as it has been in the past with other companies... he would always take off work. The deck looks great! I can't wait to get started on the bathroom!
Description of Work: We had our unsightly deck completely redone. There was no question as to who we would have to do this job, this is our third time using Kraft Construction. The other jobs they have done are as follows... a complete remodel of our kitchen, shelves for my business, and will be doing our master bathroom as well.

For the most part it went great. Kraft always cleaned up after themselves. Foreman on job made himself very available for questions. Schedule went 2 weeks over partially due to snow and later adds on. Biggest watch out is communication around pricing. As things were added and changed, the initial estimate did not always match the final price. Would highly recommend and any negatives seemed minor in comparison to what most people describe when doing a project of this size.
Description of Work: Kraft remodeled the entire main floor. We removed the old dining room walls to create one large kitchen, dining, family room space. This required installation of a beam. We installed hardwoods in all rooms. Gutted kitchen and replaced with new cabinets, island, granite counters, etc. Updated bathroom with flooring and cabinetry. Rebuilt entry closet. Added window seat. Replace french doors and kitchen window.

The front of our house was unusually plain and had no curb appeal. We had Kraft Construction come to our house a few months prior to get an estimate for a project that we decided not to do. We were so impressed with Kraft Construction that we went to them again for an estimate on the front portico and remodeling job. Broke the rule of getting more than 1 estimate....we only got one estimate from Kraft. We knew we wanted them to do the job because of past experience with Kraft Construction. Words cannot explain what a great job they performed and how happy we are with the new portico and new front door. Greg & Art kept me abreast of what was going on and what to expect next. Any questions or concerns were addressed promptly.

It's a family owned business. I found them to be very courteous, prompt, and friendly. They were nice people to have around the house. I did not mind their presence at all. They were on time and cleaned up after they were done. I thought their price was very good.
Description of Work: Kraft remodeled our master bathroom and painted our master bedroom. They also remodeled a bedroom in the basement. This bedroom had paneling nailed directly to the studs. They replaced it with drywall and painted the room. They removed an old tile shower and installed a bathtub in it's place. They removed old bathroom cabinets and installed new ones. They also installed new vanity tops and built mirror frames for me. They put in a new tile floor as well. They painted the master bedroom and bathroom. They installed three new light fixtures.

Despite having good reports from other list contributors we are truly dissatisfied with the work done for us by Kraft Construction. We interviewed two other companies and felt they all would have been good, but selected Kraft, because of our preference for their design and their slightly lower bid. What we discovered was that their work was careless with many mistakes that would have been noticed and easily corrected if there had been more detailed planning of the specific construction activities and adequate on-site supervision. There were costs above those specified in the contract. Some were our changes to upgrade the quality of doors and windows. Others increases were due to Kraft not anticipating the extent of the structural changes required. (1) Installing the kitchen window off center (it?s still about 1.5? off as measured in the finished construction) which resulted in the can lighting not being centered in the room. (2) Can lighting which could not be moved because it was surrounded by plumbing before window placement error was noticed. This resulted in the installation of more costly surface mount lighting; an expense we partially assumed along with our payment for the now useless can lights. (3) Building the new floors higher than the existing floors they needed to meet. This resulted in having to jack up a floor joist to fix the worst and most obvious spot. The other areas still remain a problem and have resulted in cabinets shimmed so high that standard toe-kick molding isn?t tall enough to cover the exposure. (4) Tasks done out of sequence, so that we had water leaking behind new drywall and plaster onto new hardwood flooring, because the siding installation wasn?t complete. (5) The new studs that mounted to the existing brick facing were not caulked during installation. They had to be caulked as best as possible after the siding was installed. (6) Upper cabinets installed at ceiling height which did not allow space for crown molding. Cabinets damaged by removing them to re-hang. Base cabinets installed at different heights and in twisted placements which resulted in needing one section of them removed and reset by the buyer to accommodate the countertop installation, making the installation a two, non-consecutive day job. Molding installed so unskillfully that we requested it be removed. Spacers between cabinets cut to the wrong size, so that drawer fronts had to be cut down to create enough clearance for drawer pulls to be installed. The cabinet vendor made multiple modifications to provide basic functionality. (7) A custom pantry door made or ordered incorrectly in a style that didn?t match the cabinets. (8) Drywall installed so poorly that it extended beyond doors and window frame faces resulting in difficult trim installation. The buyer made customized spacers for each door and window so that the moldings could be installed flat to the drywall. (9) Forgetting to re-sheath and insulate an exterior wall after relocating plumbing which resulted in frozen pipes on the first cold day this winter. Repair required removing roofing material and cutting into the roof to gain access to the area.
Description of Work: Our job consisted of adding an extension to the back of our 61 year old cinder block and brick house to lengthen the existing kitchen by six feet and to add a 9’ X 9’ room off our dining room to serve as a mudroom and a new back entrance. To do this, excavation needed to be done by hand as our property isn’t wide enough to allow trenching equipment on site. New construction needed to be tied to the existing house and part of the old outside masonry wall had to be removed. The existing kitchen was to be gutted and rebuilt. This was quoted as an 11 week job which began May 26, 2009, but was still incomplete by mid October 2009 when they had delivered the last item for the job. By this point we had asked them to discontinue work on the project, because they were doing such poor quality work on the finish carpentry. This left the kitchen with pantry doors to be hung, all the baseboard, window and door frames, cabinet moldings and door and drawer pulls to be installed. From the point when they broke through the wall, the first week in July, when we had to discontinue using the kitchen, we cooked in the basement (with our refrigerator in the dining room on the first floor) for 103 days.

The experience was relatively painless. Was told it would take 5 weeks and it took 5 weeks on the nose. The original estimate for all the work was too high so they worked with me to pay the counter and cabinet supplier directly and save a few $1000. Work probably would have gone faster had there been more than one person working however that one person did an excellent job. He worked every day from 8AM and gave me regular progress updates. The quality of the work is excellent and the kitchen is quite beautiful.

Excellent. We were told how difficult it would be to live without a kitchen during the remodeling but it was very easy , even with our 4 kids and many pets. Art did most of the work and was like a family member when there. KNew all the kids names and never seemed to mind if they got in his way sometimes. The people Kraft contracted with also were very good. We had to hire a designer due to the home's strange layout and both Art and Greg worked very well with Michele from Arbour Living Interiors, even when hit with some glitches
Description of Work: Gutted entire back end of home to include dining room, kitchen room. New fireplace, 1/2 bath, floor, patio, garage entry door, painting, enlarged kitchen, new cabinetry, new hardwood floor in kitchen and dining room, enlarged dining room to living room entry, new electric, new ceiling fixtures, paint entire first floor, new entry way closet, new stair rails. We interviewed 5 companies including the 2 big companies specializing in kitchen remodel and all either said what we wanted couldn't be done or gave us a standard template design. Kraft was the last company we interviewed and when Greg came to look, his positive attitude and excitement as well as his saying that our plan was workable won us over.
