This experience was without question the worst we could have imagined. As the homeowners, we provided detailed specifications of everything we wanted up front. The only consistency about this job was that the work was sloppy, the crew was disorganized and under managed and the general contractor, Alejandro Chaberman, was completely unresponsive and dishonest. To that point there were more than one emergency throughout the work and when he was needed, his voice mail would either be full or he would be out of the country. The job began in mid October 2012 and we were promised that we would be able to move in in December 2012. We moved in the first week of February 2013. As the home owners, we were never given a straight answer about timing or how construction of the more complex aspects of the job were going to be handled, despite our frequent status requests. Alejandro promised specific aspects of the work to be completed and by the end of the "work" he confessed he was not able to live up to his promises. We had to hire another contractor to finish and fix the work that was left. We met with Alejandro in March 2013 to discuss open issues since we had paid for everything and the work was not done. He admitted that he owed us a refund (which we have in writing from him) of $10,500 given his inability to perform and our need to hire someone else. Since that meeting he has only paid us $4,100 of that refund and has now gone completely silent. We can't reach him by phone, email or text. We have filed a claim with Consumer Affairs and the BBB (which he ignored and subsequently has an "F" rating). We would warn anyone wishing to work with this company to reconsider. In terms of our project, we simply want the balance of the refund that we were promised which stands at $6,400. This work has caused enormous distress and a greater financial burden than ever was planned for given the delays and problems with the final result.
Description of Work: This general contractor was hired to perform a relatively standard renovation to combine two NYC apartments. In addition to the combination, he was hired to renovate a kitchen and bath as well.
