Nunez Construction and Painting

I bought my first place last June (2012)- a multi-family in the Bronx. The place hadn't been cared for (aside from some cheap patchwork repairs) for at least a decade; perhaps longer. I needed to overhaul the second floor bathroom immediately, as well as fix up interior hallway walls in that unit. Meanwhile, I had an electrician re-doing all the electric- inside and out. Efren Nunez was tremendous in working around the electrical guys. All told, he took care of: 1) Ripping apart the basement 2) Completely re-modeling the basement 3) Installing flooring 4) Completely re-habbing first floor unit, including re-finishing hardwood floor 5) Roof repair 6) Repaving a 50' long 2' wide alley along side of building 7) Masonry work 8) Repairing big old leaking radiators 9) Acquiring and installing front and side gates 10) Repairing plumbing Basically everything. Toward the end, when my finances were getting tight, I decided to go as minimal as possible on the last major project- my unit. Efren wouldn't hear of it. He made sure EVERYTHING was done and made sure the cost didn't go beyond what I could afford. He returned calls and emails quickly, was absolutely reliable and honest, and always displayed good humor and forbearance. Efren was always tremendously supportive of and thoughtful about all ideas for the remodeling, and improvised solutions for all the problems we came across along the way. While I don't miss needing all the work done, I actually do miss seeing and working with him. Efren Nunez is the best kind of contractor, and I was tremendously fortunate to have found him through Angie's List.

We consider ourselves rookies in the world of home improvement. As a result, we approached what was a significant renovation of a second floor with some serious trepidation. After a few bumps, we landed on Nunez Construction and it was the absolutely best choice we could have made. Nunez and his work ethic made this a wonderful experience. We initially met with two contractors (through Home Advisor): one who came in at an incredibly high price and another one not too far behind him in terms of cost. We figured we should go with the latter thinking that was the price range for the job. Fortunately, after some serious second-guessing, we decided to see what else was out there. We joined Angie?s List and met with three contractors in quick succession, all of which came in at less than half the price the initial two contractors we saw quoted us at ? so listen to your gut. Lesson learned. Out of the three, we ended up going with Nunez because the price seemed reasonable, he was no-nonsense and responsive, and he had a pretty stellar record on the List. Nunez came in with his crew and walked me through the various stages virtually every day. His crew was generally quiet and respectful and generally worked between 8:30 am until 6:30 pm from Monday to Friday (and even some Saturdays!). Nunez arranged for removal of all debris and some old, large appliances. He patiently explained quite a bit to a couple of novices and was incredibly responsive whenever we had a question. He is a man of few words, but direct and efficient. When there was a problem with the old plumbing, it was solved without drama or additional charges. He even had his crew assemble some children?s furniture and move up a pretty sizeable bedroom set up to the master bedroom, all at no extra cost to us. The job ended about three days over the estimated 3 ½ weeks, but nothing to complain about there ? he wanted to make sure everything was done correctly. We are beyond thrilled with the results. The final product is all we ever imagined and more. And what he did with the biggest challenge, the bathroom, is truly spectacular. Nunez made what could have been a nightmare of an experience (where we almost got taken in!) an absolute pleasure. Knowing people who are currently in litigation with their contractors, I can say that Nunez is a rare breed. I look forward to working with him again in the future and highly recommend his services to all members.

The painters were polite and punctual, but did not speak any English. They were extremely slow and did not tape or cover anything. They painted over light switchplates, door latches, hinges, etc., so everything was stuck. There was wall paint on the ceiling, ceiling paint on the walls, etc. The part of the job I had an Angie's list coupon for, they performed quickly. I purchased an extra coupon on my own to complete the job and then they started dragging their feet (I guess to prolong the job) so I'd need to buy more coupon, which I did not. I had to touch up all the trim and ceiling mess myself and complete the job on my own, because it looked like it would take days more.

He had two gentlemen come up. They were on time, very punctual. Sometimes they didn't speak English so sometimes there was some miscommunication. The workers worked very hard. You need to be very clear to Mr. Nunez what you want.

The representative from Nunez was very professional and responsive in looking at the project and providing an estimate. The estimate that they provided was reasonable, but I was able to find a lower estimate from a contractor who was able to do the work in a shorter time frame. I would not hesitate to contact them in the future for other projects.

Overall Mr. Nunez and his employee's were very prompt, helpful, fast, and professional.

They have been great. I really like owner he is a good listener, he was able to work to my schedule. We had some adjustments to make on the size of my kitchen and he was able to adjust on the fly. There was something were I was gone for the weekend and I couldn't to make a decision on something. He said he didn't like the way it looked and he fixed and it was perfect. He wants professional work done he oblivious wants to live his mark professionally. I’m spending with them $16000.

Not as meticulous with window muntins as we would have liked, but overall, "satisfactory".

I purchased the Angie's List deal for $500 for two painters for eight hours. Though it took some time to secure an appointment with Nunez, once we secured a date/time, the painters showed up promptly. I asked them to paint two bedrooms and a dining room. Not only did the rooms turn out beautifully, but the painters were also respectful, professional, and they cleaned up afterwards. I will definitely be using them again in the future.

Overall we were extremely happy with the renovation. Contractor was flexible on start time (came in between 9am and 10am). Four workers came in and started work immediately with the demo. First day the entire bathroom was gutted and everything was removed from our apartment. Framing of the bathroom substructure came next and was extremely well done. The tub (cast iron) was given it's own reinforced area to hold the weight. Floor was leveled perfectly. Walls were also reinforced to hold new cabinets. Plumbing was done next. We made a mistake (not the contractor) and had to redo some of the plumbing and the contractor was very flexible on fixing it for us. Drywall went up and all the appropriate materials were used for the glass tile walls and pebble floor. Glass tiles were installed perfectly in a subway pattern. Pocket door was installed and they used our existing trim to re-frame it like we asked. It runs super smooth. Pebble floor was done last and they did a great job scattering the pebbles so that you don't see lines. Finishing of the bathroom took a few more days and again they did a really nice job painting the desired pattern and doing small details that really made the bathroom come together. For example: finishing the tub with a small sliver of glass tiles along the bottom edge (their idea), it really added to the final look. Contractor guaranteed the workmanship and came back after a few days to fix just one minor issue. They fixed it without a problem. We really appreciated his honesty and willingness to keep us happy. We definitely plan to call them again when we decide to do our kitchen. The workers were all extremely professional and respectful. Their estimate was fair and the final price was a little above due to our mistake and a few extra days of work which we understood. Note: Before the renovation began we had already purchased everything that was getting installed and we prepared our house with plastic sheeting and floor protection. We did this ourselves to save time and money. Contractor was responsible for the materials like drywall and plumbing pipes. We were happy to see they purchased quality materials and gave us the option to choose.

Overall, it was a job well done. Mr. Nunez gave special attention to my project and my concerns. He complied with the requirements of my Coop Mgmt. Initially, he agreed to come and assess the job on a Sunday evening, which was convenient for me.Unfortunately, he had truck trouble so he called to reschedule. He suggested the best type of paint to purchase. So, when I went to Home Depot, I called him and he spoke to the salesman for me telling him exactly what to give me. He reminded me of how busy he is and that he would accommodate me for painting whatever date I wanted. There was wall damage that the maintenance crew in my building was responsible for repairing before the painters could paint. Well, Maintenance kept putting me off, which meant I had to keep pushing the paint job back; day by day. Mr. Nunez was again very accommodating and patient. Finally, the repair job was done and Mr. Nunez could start the next day. He brought the painters over, gave them instructions and left. The men were very skilled. They did a wonderful job. Mr. Nunez came back to get his workers and inspect their work. He was pleased and so was I.

We didn't use them because they never came back with the quote. They had a special and I sent them an email and I said I am on Angie's List and I have this Angie's list coupon and I am interested in painting our house. I also told them that we could only use someone who is licensed and insured, he did a call back and he came like late, you but we welcome them in anyway, and they started saying, this was going to cost this and cost that then they said that you had to provide your own paint and you have to provide your own brushes, everything that we need to use, you are going to have to provide it. So we told them, we did not have all of that. Then there was an issue with their insurance, they were telling me they were insured and I said I work at the department of insurance I can check to see if you are and I checked them and they were not insured. I was completely disappointed.

Not well. When we decided to have only the bathroom renovated, Mr. Nunez stopped being responsive.

He told me that he was busy. I sent him an email saying that we didn't have a chance to discuss anything and I also told him that I was aware of a coupon that he had. He emailed me back today without giving me a proposal and then said that he couldn't do the job because he was unavailable. He was great and came out on a Sunday. I spoke to him on a Saturday and we set up a time. I asked him if he could be here a little bit earlier and he was. He did a walk through and had some good suggestions. I thought he was very nice and pleasant. He couldn't really give me a quote because he's so busy because he has such great reviews. He's like totally booked and I was disappointed. I have to go to someone else because I just bought my apartment and the people are moving out mid March. I want to move in there by the end of April and I have a lot of work that I have to get done, but since it's a co-op everything has to be submitted to the board for approval before it's started.

The owner, Efren, was here before, during and after the job. He detailed what his people would do, and that only changed as the condition of the plumbing, walls, and electric were discovered. The workers involved were punctual, quiet, professional, and gentlemanly at all times. The bill was about 2000.00 higher than I had anticipated, but the extra work that caused the increase was detailed, and reasonable. Our kitchen is certainly transformed. There were a couple of minor issues with the finished job, but they came back almost immediately to correct them. I would definitely recommend this contractor to others.

We hired Nunez Construction for repairs and home-improvement, including replacing an old fence damaged by Hurricane Sandy and to install a new stainless steel awning. We also had a fence installed on the roof and to complete roof-access a set of attic-stairs was installed. Some electrical repairs in the house were also made. Overall, it was a very positive experience. The work started on time and was completed well within the time-frame specified in the contract. His crew was very professional and cleaned up after their work each day. When unexpected problems arose (such as loose masonry in the back stoop) solutions were implemented quickly. We would use Nunez Construction for future repairs/home-improvement and highly recommend his services to anyone looking for a general contractor.

Other unscrupulous contractors would have ignored you or simply LIED to you to get you to buy the service then leave you hang. But Nunez was clearly above such actions. Hope to use them in the future.

Everyone was very polite and professional. The job went fast and they were always on time.

I asked Efren to measure everything and give me a price for a new PVC fence; his price was cheaper than everyone elses because he told me where I could buy ultra cheap PVC fencing; in the end I decided to go with the aluminum fencing for part of it and he gave us ideas on how to salvage some existing portions and keep it safe from vandals and storms. The cement and bolts did the trick, and the aluminum is perfect for the hill. The work was done in a few days.

It went well; I spoke to Efren, he went and looked at the kitchen, and determined a price and estimated time for that Friday; I ok'd the price and then got a call a few hours later; he and my tenant had coordinated (with my ok) to do the work sooner; he was finished by that afternoon! I wish all our other contractors were so eager to finish jobs!! The work was in Flushing.

I purchased an Angie's List "Big Deal" for 2 rooms of interior painting from Nunez Construction. The owner, Efren Nunez, was very responsive to my call and came out himself to scope the rooms that I wanted painted. The morning of the work the guys that were doing the painting showed up mostly on time - about 20-30 minutes late - but I think they had a hard time finding parking in my busy neighborhood. The only hiccup with getting started was that they didn't bring a tall enough ladder with them. My ceilings are about 11 and a half ft tall. They were going to go all the way back to their shop to get one but I was able to borrow a ladder from the building maintenance. Overall they did a great job, were nice, and not intrusive. The owner called me around lunchtime to see how everything was going which I thought was nice. My only complaint would be that they seemed to take a LONG time. They were there from about 9:30am to almost 7:30pm, two guys, with them both taking a lunch break and one guy going to move the truck, etc. The rooms that were being painted were not that big, although admittedly there was a lot to "get around" in the bathroom and it was a very dark color that was going up. However, they did an excellent job and I'd rather it take longer and look good! I would definitely recommend them for painting.

Their service was great. They were reasonably price. They completed the work on time. I would use them again in the future.

From the start, Efren was punctual and professional when he came over to give his estimate. We needed the kitchen, living room and hallways painted. Once we agreed to his competitive offer, and set a date, his team showed up on time and ready to work. They were courteous, professional, and most important really good at what they do. They were great about all the little things we asked for, painting the baseboard in semi gloss and the walls flat, etc. At the end of the day, we looked over the job and found a couple of touch-ups to which they attended immediately and graciously. We intend to hire them again in the Spring to do the bedrooms.
