Description of Work: Graham has been servicing my BMW for over 10 years. He knows the cars, is honest and trustworthy and is much more reasonable than a dealership.

I've owned this car since '06 and Graham Lawson at "Bimmers Only" is the only person (along with his co-workers) who have ever touched it. They've replaced worn suspension bushings, a failed rear window wiper motor, had the automatic transmission rebuilt, replaced the commonly failing dashboard pixel panel and done regular maintenance on the car. Graham knows these cars intimately because BMW's are the only make he works on. (As the name indicates :-) There are times I've suggested work before it was needed and Graham would tell me he could do the work but it wasn't necessary. He knows the cars and has integrity. Bought the car with 28,000 miles and it now has 144,000 miles and still going strong. Graham's shop is small and always busy. I try to call a week or more in advance to set up an appt. He's walking distance to the Bedford Hills Metro North station so I can leave the car for a day or two, return to New York City and go back on an easy train ride. Maintaining a BMW is never cheap but going to "Bimmers Only" is a much better value than going to a dealership.
Description of Work: Replaced the shocks and tires on my '03 540iT M sport wagon. Replaced a couple of leaky hoses on the power steering reservoir, cleaned the area around the leak and changed the oil and filters.

One day last year, my car stalls on my driveway after I arrive from a trip and I have it towed to Bimmers Only Inc. to fix it. Using Bimmers Only seemed like a good idea because I can walk from the shop to my house. However, the unfortunate story of Bimmers Only ?repair? is as follows. They determine that it is an overheating problem. In trying to solve the problem they replace about everything that in one way or the other has to do with the cooling system of the car ? like the radiator and all sorts of hoses -- and charges me roughly 3,500 dollars. The owner tells me that somebody had put in too much of the type of liquid that you find in auto part stores that fixes holes in radiators and water hoses and that this had clogged the cooling system. Shortly thereafter on my way to Poughkeepsie the car overheats and in my naivet? I again have the car towed to Bimmers Only and ask that they fix it ? whatever it was that was causing the overheating. The shop takes what seemed like an eternity to fix it by replacing some more hoses and charges me in the order of $400 more. And guess what happened after a couple of weeks: A friend of me brings me to the airport and the car overheats again on the Van Wyck expressway. Luckily I was able to haul a passing taxi cab and didn?t miss my plane. I felt guilty about leaving my friend especially because we had a hard time explaining to BMW roadside assistance where we were located. However, after I left him, my friend disconnects and reconnects the battery cables and the temperature gauge went down and the car started right up. To me this seems to indicate that the computer chip is faulty, this chip might be responsible for the circulation of the cooling liquid. It might also be the temperature sensor or the valve that makes the cooling fluid circulate or not. I don't know. I am only lay person and I haven?t had the chance to bring the car to a BMW dealer due to a hospitalization, a trip to Europe and a subsequent illness that put me in bed for another three weeks.
Description of Work: My 2001 BMW 330xi has mysterious overheating problems. Bimmers Only, Inc. replaced about everything that has to do with the cooling system of the car. However, the real problem, which I still don't know what it is, has not been resolved. If the car overheats again it will be a simple matter disconnecting and reconnecting the battery cables and the car will start up again. This probably resets the electrical computer system of the car, which I guess regulates the temperature of the cooling fluid. It is a somewhat tedious temporarily solution but for the moment I can live with it. Eventually the true underlying problem has to be resolved but I haven't had a chance yet.

Response from Bimmers Only Inc
When the member had his vehicle towed to my shop, he told me that it stalled and overheated. The reason it stalled was because the engine got so hot that the pistons expanded inside the cylinder to the point where they couldn’t move up and down anymore. The member had driven the vehicle for many miles with the temperature gauge pegged in the red and ignored it until the engine shut off! When I checked out the vehicles I found a five inch long crack in the expansion tank, and a thick, white, muddy substance was coming out of said crack. This substance is known in the trade as “cooling system stop leak”. It was obvious that the vehicle had a coolant leak that he was trying to repair with the “Stop Leak”. At this time, I explained to him that the fact the engine overheated to the point where it shut off normally indicates the engine is damaged beyond repair! Also, the “Stop Leak” that he put into the cooling system had spread itself throughout the cooling system and plugged the radiator, the heater core and the heater valve. I told him that he would be better off getting another engine. Instead - the member asked me to try and clean out the “Stop Leak” and replace all plugged parts – which I did. I also undertook a huge job using pressurized steam to clean out the inside of the cooling system to the point where the “Stop Leak” finally stopped flowing out. I reassembled the engine. I filled and bled the cooling system – Everything seemed OK except his water heater pump had a loose bearing. I disassembled the engine and replaced the water pump. I road tested the vehicle 100 miles over a two day period. The member picked up the vehicle. I explained to him that everything seemed OK but – I told him that, “He could never be sure about his engine which had been so badly abused.” He returned with the car on a flatbed. One of the cooling system hoses had exploded. The hose was replaced and the cooling system was filled and bled. I could not find any reason for the hose to have ruptured. He picked up the vehicle and I never heard or saw him again until his letter arrived. It has been three months since I completed repairs. He should have at least given me the opportunity to address the situation – which he has not. Sincerely, Grahm Lawson Bimmers Only, Inc.
