Bill, the general contractor, was on target with the costs of the project for the most part. His price was lower than two other bids I had received, and his bid included allowances for my fixtures and cabinets which the other contractors did not (although his allowances were a bit on the low side). After I signed contract he noticed mold on the rear of my house siding and said it was an ominous sign and usually indicated a leak so we had to investigate that by taking off the siding and doing a roof inspection. Turned out it was due to improper routing of my central AC humidity pipes which were draining into my wooden soffitt! My only gripe about this would be that it would have been nice if he had mentioned this to me when he was looking at the job in the beginning, but perhaps he didn't see the mold then? I don't know. Anyway, he kept in touch with me frequently via emails and texts especially, letting me know the weeks plan of action on Sunday afternoon. His guys showed up when expected and were clean and courteous. Bill himself is a real nice guy and if I was forced to say anything negative, it would be that he could give better guidance on design. You really need to do the designing. And the vanity I chose for the bathroom was too big so he had to cut it down after it was delivered. But the remodel looks great and we would use him again.
Description of Work: K & B is a great company to work with. My initial project was to tear down a laundry/washroom off my den that had a 1/2 bath in it, and bring the laundry appliances to the basement and create a dedicated powder room and new entry off the den area including a food pantry. I also wanted to tear down half the wall between my kitchen and dining room and create a bar-top counter with stools. I also decided, after the project started, to replace my 1956 boiler so that brought up the costs $5,400. Original estimate $22,000 (without boiler and damaged soffit repair). Actual project cost (including boiler and damaged soffitt repair) $30,250.

They were supposed to start the week before Easter, but they didn't start until the last week of April. I had my own architect, and there were problems with them following the plans correctly. They had my home exposed for 6-7 weeks without siding and then had to come back and redo the siding. When we discussed the bathrooms, the flooring and half up the walls were supposed to be tile. The contract said they would install bathroom tile provided by the owner. They made me buy the tile in April, but they didn't even install it until July. They also argued with me saying that they never agreed to install tile half way up the wall. After going back and forth, I had to pay them an additional $800 for the tile; otherwise they would void the warrantee on the work. On top of this, he did not even seal the tile. We had to regrout a lot of it. The worst part had to be the finishing work. The walls were wavy. They threw parts of the baseboard out. I spent thousands of dollars on solid oak stairs. There are gaps where the stairs meet and between the wall. They finished the work in July, and I still have not gotten my keys back.
Description of Work: They were supposed to put on a 2nd floor addition.

Response from K & B Home Solutions LLC
We apologize for not responding sooner and were just made aware of this through a contact from Angie's list. Your project began once permits were issued , which is up to your town not us. Your project was an add-a-level and complete interior renovation which took approximately 8 weeks to complete and that was with two holidays in between. The house was never left improperly exposed and the charges and re-do of the work referred to was for add-ons that were outside our original scope of work. As far as our workmanship and quality we stand behind our services and products as do our subs given the opportunity we would have addressed all your claims but K&B was never advised of your dissatisfaction until this.
