Wowed again-Thanks [Member Name Removed]! I hope you have had some success with the failure of a heating contractor who flooded your home continually! We hear them all. HVAC contractors wish I would stop putting high performance insulation in homes because it hurts their overloading of expenses to install bigger and bigger equipment . Hope we can help in the future! It does not get any better - that more or less sums up this review. John quickly responded to all inquiries with specific information and was easy to schedule with. He showed up on time... to the minute... and was prepared to start surveying the job and then get right to making the necessary repairs to our home. He is clearly an expert in his field, and, as the sole proprietor of his business takes his work and the satisfaction of his customers very seriously. At all times I had total confidence in the quality of the work he was doing, in the suggestions he made for future work, and the information he shared with me about the "science" of the field of home insulation. I cannot too strongly recommend John to people needing insulation work done on their home. He works hard, he works well, and he is, on top of it, a nice guy!

Thank You [removed member name]- I was amazed to find water feed pipes boxed in to a false porch floor- what sort of plumber does that sort of work knowing that the whole house will be without water some cold evening. They wrapped a little fiberglass around it but only lightly- Mother Nature loves an easy task of her periodic cruelty to homeowners. Yes I found this problem and glad I did because it surely was in a place few would even consider looking! You guys chose me to unravel your freezing pipe mystery, I was glad to help. Thanks again for this review and taking the time to send it on! John

I had problems with ice damming this past winter. John came over to the house and spent a lot time doing an assessment of our complex attic space, the roofs, gutters, and drainage system. He ended up making a separate trip back to the house a few days later for a second assessment at no extra charge. John identified several problems and proposed several options for remediation. He provided sound, well thought out advice and recommendations. He recommended that I first try a lower cost intervention, before considering a more expensive insulation project with him! I really appreciated his honesty on integrity.

We finalized the contract and a week later he started the process. He kept me informed throughout (without prompting) and always responded quickly when I had questions. He is a hard worker and finished the job a day early. I'm happy to say the process had the intended effect and the noise from the train has reduced. I would strongly recommend John for blown-in foam insulation or any other kind of insulation related project.
Description of Work: I contacted John after going through many reviews for insulation professionals on Angie's list. I was interested in insulating my home to reduce some of the noise from a nearby train track and had read that blown-in foam through the existing walls could accomplish that goal. John was very knowledgeable and walked me through the process over the phone. He then came to my home to examine the walls and provide a quote.

Thanks [Member Name Removed]- glad to help and really appreciate you mentioning this sound review of a sound investment. I did end up injecting walls on the backside of the house at no additional cost to you because I DO take pride in my end results and train noise was actually bouncing and reflecting off of that large rock wall back there. I suspect that as you get situated in your new home, that a neighbor near the train station will want to know more about your "sound" investment . Thank-You for taking the time to tell the homeowner world about further DoctorEnergySmart.com services. We have done many condo and townhouses with BIG results also. Enjoy your new home. He showed up on time and was very thorough. He took me around my house and showed me all the possible "problem areas" where I could have air leaking out or in to my house. After spending the time explaining what was going on, he offered me "do it yourself" repairs I could make and spend a ton of money doing it. I would absolutely recommend this company to anyone looking to evaluate their home for possible ways to save money on their utility bills, and I will use them in the future if I decide to do any insulating on my home.

Hi (removed member name)- I believe Jim was your thermal image reviewer- he is now very busy catching up with the many "large truck" needed jobs that accumulated during the very cold winter. My name is John and I am the owner of the company. I noticed a B in your review about price and just thought you should know that our pricing is a good bit lower than home inspectors charge, giving client's much unuseable info and repeated pictures of "typical" leaking areas such as receptacle wall plug leaks. We found that if a couple wall plug outlets leaked on exterior walls, they all should be addressed our way because they were all installed by the same technique and contractor. We do hope you have addressed the many convection air seal areas and have enjoyed the changed comfort level in your home. These leaky areas blow in when air pressure is positive from outside, and when the heat comes on in the home, that positive air pressure sneaks out through the same exact leaks. Its like living in a fishnet basically, why spend on insulating if you are allowing mother nature in and out, at her own will? Thank you very much for taking the time to review us. John

He is the only person who does it, and it was just an experiment, because I was desperate to do something. In general, things were better. When things got to below zero, we still had issues, but it was still better than before. It made it better, but it didn't alleviate the issue. He is probably going to be better after he does it more often. It is kind of tricky, because we were just putting it based on what we could see. He was early. When he got here, the conversation that we had prior to that, and what we had agreed upon, was different from what we thought would be happening. You have to have everything in writing from him before the job is done. Not an understanding in general, because he became verbally combative about what we had agreed upon. We argued and almost didn't have the job done because of that. His assistant seemed to better at it than he was, but he didn't want to listen to his assistant, but I was desperate to get it done. When I called him earlier about it, he said okay it would be $2200 and he had come out and given us a quote already. There were points where I said I didn't want him. I knew it was going to hurt the chance, and I had to get it done, and he seemed to be the only one who made sense. The experience in general was not pleasant. I asked him about a review where someone gave him a D grade, and he explained it and it made sense. He seemed to have an idea about how it works, but he wasn't an expert at it. I tried to compare it, but I had nothing to compare it. He was standing on my cabinets with his sneakers and his assistant had to tell him to get a paper to stand on. He was not professional at all.
Description of Work: I used Doctor Energy. They foamed my pipes for me. I have a very old Victorian house, and it is over 100 years old, and so we were trying to find a way to insulate the pipes. The last few winters have been very hard and so we were trying to insulate the pipe and we have had problems with the pipes freezing, so, what we were trying to do is insulation using foam. I wanted to wait before the winter was over to see if it works or not, so he put small holes in my wall, and sprayed foam in them so that it would take up whatever space is left, and cover the water pipes.

John was wonderful! Very knowledgeable, professional, thorough and an absolute pleasure to work with. He also took the time to explain the insulation process and to thoroughly answer all my questions (and believe me, there were a lot of questions!). John also worked incredibly hard to do a great job. For example, our kitchen cabinets are attached to an outside wall, so the kitchen was freezing all winter. We needed someone to insulate behind the cabinets (i.e., to block the cold from coming in through the cabinets from the outside wall). Our house has great wooden cabinets (came with the house) and I was concerned that drilling holes to insulate behind the cabinets could compromise them. John found creative ways to insulate without causing any problems to our beloved cabinets. I was thrilled! John also squeezed into a dark, long crawl space in our basement just to make sure he insulated as deeply and thoroughly into the crawlspace as possible. I was very impressed with his work and with his work ethic. John was also very personable and sensitive to our needs. We have a toddler and a newborn and John seemed to understand and to appreciate how important is was that our house be as warm and comfortable as possible for our children. John also made me laugh a lot throughout the process, which certainly made the day move quickly. I would recommend John without hesitation! A real pro and a very nice person too.

Hi folks have been very busy but have sent my recommendations for your ice damming issues. I have also a strong belief that there are many disconnected duct lines around your air conditioning system in the attic, and leaving those ceiling ducts open in winter allows for all your heat to be lost and delivered directly to your attic, thus creating ice damming. Usually it is a problem of insufficient attic floor insulation, letting the homes's heat to rise and melt the roofline snow, but in your case my camera showed many disconnected duct lines. Your home will be much cooler this summer, we can come and sprayfoam them shut for an absolute year-round benefit. Thanks for taking the time to review my endeavors!

Energy Assessment That went really well, lasted about an hour. Jim offered some good pointers and showed me on his thermal camera all the spots where cold air was coming in. Highly recommended to anyone looking to find where the heat is escaping! Crawlspace Insulation Kate and Jim came by a few weeks later and insulated my crawlspace. As the temperature is warming up it's hard to tell the difference so I'm going to say all is good! (I will do an update when the temp drops again). The only reason I gave a B for "Overall" and "Price" was because I paid $500 to have the crew clean out the old insulation and cardboard. While that was done - the 17 contractor bags were left behind for me to dispose of (which is an exercise that is still in process as I'm finding creative ways to get them to the dump). If this was communicated to me previously I must have forgotten it as it was a surprise to both my wife and I. Otherwise, the service was good. Jim and Kate were a delight to have around for half a day. And we'll hopefully have a nice warm house next winter. UPDATE: I revised my score to an A. I connected with Kate about the confusion and they offered to remove it for me. Great customer service goes a long way. Thanks Dr. Energy Smart!!
Description of Work: I had an energy assessment done which lead to some great tips on how to conserve heat and energy, and also lead to the discovery that my crawlspace was a disaster area that didn't have much in terms of insulation. Jim and Kate from Dr. Energy Smart came by a few weeks later and spray foamed by entire crawlspace.

Dear [Member Name Removed], It was truly a pleasure meeting you and your wife and it was both Jim's and my pleasure working for you guys. I wanted to take a minute to apologize for the miscommunication. I personally did not speak with you about what the removal means when it comes to old insulation. We usually take great care in explaining that the charge is for specifically ripping down old existing insulation and bagging it but no disposal. The reason we don't haul away the bags is that in the state of New Jersey if you have commercial plates, which we do, you must be a licensed waste hauler to be able to transport construction debris. This license is expensive but more importantly comes with mountains of paperwork because of new regulations. As a company we made a decision two years ago to only charge people for the removal of the old insulation and not disposal of it. Again I truly apologize for the confusion and the surprise that your wife and you were left with. That was not our intention. If you are having issues with the disposal of the debris please give us a call, we would love to help you out. Our goal is to have 100% satisfied clients and it would be a shame if you are not happy with our work due to an honest miscommunication.. Jim might not have done a very good job explaining himself. Sincerely, Kate
Margaret S.

I always thank clients for taking the time to review our work! It was an interesting eye-opener that should have been mentioned sooner, but we strangely don't get calls from condo or townhouse owners, even though they have been sold mostly un-insulated or woefully under insulated living spaces. Due to cost, budget and basically what I call "un-interested" multi-unit builders and real estate management companies' bottom line, the cost of insulation seems to be a problem. In the long-term, and "after the sale, the homeowner gets to "pay the price". Horror stories abound! Talk of not being able to provide comfort at any utility bill level, needing to move downstairs to sleep in the cooler living room from upstair bedrooms, freezing cold clothing closets are just some. The space between the outside brick and your inside walls was a giant 6 inches. That would mean the large void was your only insulation, since the engineers know that thermal transfer is more difficult in dead airspace than in more solid mediums such as fiberglass. Obviously in normal temperatures that's fine. But when mother nature "shows off", it is quite lacking in results. When a condo or townhouse owner goes to the management office to make a complaint, they are usually met with a "its' yours" response. They will say it passed code. Not helpful! At Naima.com there is a regional US map that shows the national insulation R-Value levels suggested, but an empty void in walls cannot satisfy our client's needs or NAIMA . It seems that most units are sold in the more comfortable months of the year, the unfortunate surprise of total un-comfortability is noted by new owners later, after the sale. Our injection foam in your coldest walls will change your living space year-round, but especially in winter. We enjoyed helping you, and hope your neighbors, and condo owners everywhere read about your experience with Doctor Energy Smart, again, Thank-you. I personally also hope you have contacted the animal rescue about that lil pooch you want. He/she needs a true love experience for his life that will surely occur at your home. We are all animal lovers on a large scale here, you are obviously to! Happy Easter!

Sure glad we could help you, we always enjoy working on the Hudson river where high force winds are prevalent most of the time. That injection wall foam will surely stop them from entering your home again. Isn't it great you did not have to "tear down those walls" to re-insulate them? Small holes easily allow all we need to fill the wall cavity even when there is fiberglass in there already. We are pioneers of this service, all other installing companies inject from the outside of the house as seen on the many you-tube videos available to watch! Since the fiberglass paper facing is towards the interior (conditioned space) of the home, they are sending foam at the fibrous glass side of that product. We get a much better fill as the foam hits the paper directly, it has more immediate pressure and volume to fill the wall much better. Aiming at the fibrous side clogs and the foam cures quickly, blocking the cavity void from full filling! Thanks for taking the time to review our work.

UPDATE John came to my home to address the issue the frozen pipe issues and draft coming from cantilever. John was not the guy who originally came to insulate the cantilever it was Jim. He took several hours injecting more foam into cantilever and under cabinets. Unfortunately I will not know until next winter whether what he did worked. he was the WORST contractor I have ever dealt with and I have dealt with a lot as I had just gutted my entire house to add a second story. The job was to insulate the rim of my basement and the cantilever, which housed 2 water lines for my kitchen sink. He had completed the job so I thought until the following winter when my pipes froze, I wondered how could this be? I drilled into the cantilever from the outside of my house to only find out that each bay was NOT filled with spray foam, so nothing was insulating my pipes. I called him up to which at first he couldn't remember the job, but eventually he did. He told me he was away on vacation and that when he got back he would come back to take a look at it. Once back from vacation he made one excuse after the other on why he couldn't come down. About after 2 weeks he finally showed up but not with his foam truck, he wanted to look at it. He blamed my wife, he blamed the kid that he had working for him for having short arms and not being able to reach into the cantilevers which were 2 feet deep. He said he would come back with another guy and fix the issue. After many calls and about 4 weeks he finally showed up but he was by himself, he ripped off the plywood to the cantilever to expose the pipes and everything else, sprayed to 2 bays that housed the pipes and said the job was much more involved then he thought, and that he wanted more money. I told him no way was he getting anything as he didn't complete job correct the first time> Again he said he would come back to spray the rest of the cantilever, mind you its only 19 feet by 2 feet. Numerous calls and numerous excuses of why he couldn't come down finally at the end of March he shows up to fix problem, asking for more money again. He spray foamed the cantilever which once I looked had him re-spray as it was a complete half a** job. I was told by him that he would replace the plywood which he didn't, he told me that I didn't need to replace it as my floor beams are exposed to the elements, he assured me it wouldn't freeze, I just told him to leave as I couldn't deal with his BS any longer. But guess what this winter the pipes keep freezing. He was so unprofessional, had no idea what he is talking about, and a complete idiot, I would NEVER, NEVER recommend him to anyone. He should not own a spray foam company he is a BS artist!

Mr. Weinssen sat down with me first to explain what he would be doing, then he went slowly through all parts of my home with a special camera that allowed him to see where the outside cold was coming into the house. The areas where cold was entering the house were very clear. Mr. Weinssen explained what could be done in different places to prevent the loss of heat. In a couple cases, he acted immediately to adjust some vents to try to direct the heat more effectively. When the analysis was completed, we discussed his recommendations, and the estimated costs. I've accepted the recommendation for weatherization work to be done in areas on the front and back walls of my townhouse. Mr. Weinssen will be returning to do this work. I was very pleased with the energy evaluation that was done. Mr. Weinssen was knowledgeable and professional, and the results of the home energy evaluation were useful to know. I think the weatherization work that is to be done will help conserve heat in the house.
Description of Work: This was an Angie's List deal for a Comprehensive Home Energy Evaluation.

Thank You [removed name]- I look forward to completing your air-infiltratlion areas, when you are back home- scheduled for the 27th at 11 AM --Not only do these areas blow cold air in(especially on windy days) when the outside positive air occurs, BUT, when the heat turns on, and the INSIDE AIR is positive, the heat blows out those same areas!. Safe travels and see you soon,John

John was very helpful from the start pointing out all the little things we could do to stop the cold air from Infiltrating our home. I was able to begin these minor projects well before John came to insulate our basement. I was imporessed on how puncutal and thorough he and his partner were when they did the work. He continued to point out things he saw even when the work was completed in about an hour. My wife and I immediatley noticed the difference in the house that same day. The heat didnt kick on as much or as long as it normally does! All and all John is a great guy to work with and he will assist you with all your needs and questions. I would use him again in a heartbeat!
Description of Work: John Recommended some minor home improvements before he even suggested the actual work performed. These little tidbits of advise were perfect in starting to keep our home just a little bit warmer! The actual work performed was the insulation foam in the basement along the perimeter.

Hey [Members Name]- Thanks a lot for another great review- we found some simple changes such as heat vent covers that were all wrong, and easily fixed- I now look for these things first off during my assessments because they were installed wrong in the first place - so homeowners won't likely notice till I point them out. Yep its the little things that count ! They sure do change thermal feelings nicely- thanks for your business and feel free to tell your friends. These reviews matter and I always try my best! Enjoy! Hey Guys! Thanks for taking the time to review our work! I especially like to hear the end result after a client has diligently performed my direction of simple air sealing. It is showing up to be the most cost effective battle plan against Mother Nature. When positive outside air pressure infiltrates the home and then allows the same exit points when the interior positive pressure of your heating system turns ON, through the same points, its like living in a fish net, air in air out constantly is unhealthy and costly! Glad you guys got our usual results while winter remains, but the hot summer air will be kept out so the air conditioning will feel better, also! Low cost air sealing is a year round benefit! That upstairs kneewall closet was quite cold and through conduction, convection, and radiation was keeping your clothing cold and your master bedroom likely benefitted greatly from our sprayfoam ! Enjoy and tell your friends about us!

John responded very promptly to my request. He came over with his infrared camera and we went around the house. There were already a few problem areas that I already knew about but he was able to point out a couple more areas which were letting cold air in and we didn't even realize that they were leaking all this time. Before he left, he made sure to give us some lists: a) a list of little things that we can do around the house ourselves to improve temperature retention (he also included detailed instructions on what materials we needed for them, where we could get them and how to install). He showed us some samples which he had in his vehicle b) a priority list based on his recommendations on what we can do for the winter and what we needed for the summer. What I really liked about him was that he gave us alternatives first and didn't push us to buy any insulation services. His words were, "Try these little repairs first (seal the drafts that he pointed out) and if you still feel that this area is still uncomfortable, then we can come in again and spray insulation". There was never any point where we felt pressured into purchasing anything. It has already been a few days since his visit and we have implemented a couple of his suggestions and the drafts are obviously reduced in one area of our house already. We plan on calling him again to check out the condition in our attic in the summer.

Thanks for taking the time to review your infrared camera assessment. Yes it reveals those mysteries easily and we use them to discover energy loss areas, prioritize the repair schedule and even check our work afterwards to be fully thorough in getting the very noticeable results we achieve! Glad to help and keep that kid warm! Enjoy

John quickly responded to my inquiry, and upon learning that the room that desperately need to be insulated was my 4 week old baby's room, he arranged to perform the work requested the same day as my energy audit. He was punctual, professional, and accommodating to my schedule. John quickly assessed the trouble areas of my home during the energy audit, and listed suggestions to address the problems. Some were low cost solutions, which showed me he wasn't acting like a salesman, but rather as someone solving my home's problems. Not all of the issues could be resolved with a cheap fix. I decided to go with the injection spray foam service to address the massive heat loss occurring in my infant's bedroom. This technique was minimally invasive, left very little mess (which John and his helper cleaned up), and made a drastic difference in the comfort level of the bedrooms that he spray foamed. While my home's issues will require additional work due to a poorly insulated garage (I purchased the home that way), with the pleasant experience I had with John I will not hesitate to call him back to complete the work I need done once the weather warms up. Doctor Energy Smart is reasonably priced, provides quality work, and excellent service. My wife and I were glad we went with John for this project.

John is a true professional who is quite knowledgeable. He gave me the opportunity to explain my problem, asked a few questions, and after investigating the conditions in my attic made his recommendations. He thoroughly explained what he thought was happening, why it was happening and what could be expected if he did the recommended work. He is very easy to do business with and does not "push" any unnecessary work. He covered two large vents in the eaves which he said was introducing too much cold air into the attic and made a few other very useful recommendations. At this time, I think that covering the vents may have mitigated my problem of having too much condensation in the attic. If I decide to have the work done, I will definitively use Doctor Energy Smart.
Description of Work: John felt that my problem was too much air circulation in the attic and he covered the eave vents. I wanted to see if his work corrected the problem. I decided not to proceed at this time with the larger job until I now if his initial work was the resolution.

Right [removed member name] Over-venting happens when a roofing company doesn't make mention that their Ridge, or "peak" vent takes the place of the original gable vents- They allow too much air in and corrupt the needed soffit to peak air movement that is the ultimate attic respiration. That much cold overwhelms the attic floor insulation, and meets the home's rising heat to create condensation! You can thank Angie's List for promoting my abilities, far and wide! "A greener planet, one house at a time!

He Folks- thanks for taking the time to review the thermal image audit we did at your home-on-the Hudson river! Our discounted thermal viewings beats out the pricey $5-600 audits done by home inspection companies and let the client spend their money on more needed insulating services - your place needed nothing but baseboard caulk sealing and door/window seals. We focus you on what is needed only, so there is no guesswork for the handy homeowners. It was a good idea for us to show you our methods of door sealing (we did 2 doorways ourselves for you) because accuracy in placing the seals we use is important. Enjoy!
