+ -1 moreWe belong to their little thing where you pay it for about a year and we get better than average service. They are punctual. They are clean; they put their little booties on their feet if they walk through. They are nice to my dog, my dog would bark at them like crazy and they are so nice. I feel comfortable having them in the house. We bought an expensive heat pump from them. They had it done in one day and whatever they did they saved us money on our air conditioner bills, our electricity bills. If they say they will be here at a certain time they are here.
Description of Work: I have used the services of O'Brien Service Co for heating and A/C. Last time around they were here to inspect the heat pump that we bought from them. We get an annual inspection for our hot air heat pump and it comes with the service.

+ -1 moreMy existing heat pump and air handler were now 20 years old. They were still operating, but I was spending more time each year replacing parts as it aged. O'Brien had done prior work for me maintaining a garage air conditioner. I contacted O'Brien and another contractor to provide a scope of work and estimate for the work. Both were listed on Angie's list. Both companies made a careful assessment of my system, recommended replacement, and cost estimate. It was an extremely close choice based on the cost estimate and quality of equipment. I selected O'Brien because they seemed to provide more information on how they could replace the air handler such that it would not block access to parts of my attic storage space. I selected the middle level Trane system. The crew arrived as scheduled, removed the old equipment and related trash, installed new equipment, and associated condensate drains, refrigerant lineset (pipes), power connections, and thermostat. In addition the customer service representative completed all necessary coordination for county mechanical and electrical inspection, power company rebate, and income tax rebate. I was very impressed with the professionalism and expertise of the O'Brien crew and their electrical subcontractor. All I did was write the check and unlock the doors. It has been 5 months since installation and I should have reported earlier. However I can now say that the Trane system has operated well through this past winter, however mild. We have had the system running on both heat and air conditioning mode, depending on weather. When we first used it we had trouble telling whether it was running because the motors and fans are so quiet. I gave them an excellent rating in all categories.
Description of Work: Replacement of heat pump, condenser pad, air handler, drip pan, thermostat, line set, drain line, power and control wiring, and connection to existing air ducts. This is a 3-Ton system.

+ -1 moreI was very pleased with the experience. I had a 22 year old heat pump that still worked, so was somewhat reluctant to take the leap to "fix what wasn't broken". I knew one day my luck would run out, but it was still a hard decision to make. The O'Brien staff were great about answering questions, explaining my options and providing various options. The different employees came when they said they would, cleaned up the debris, did a nice installation job and were polite and professional. The price was exactly what they said it would be. And, for the first time ever, the energy savings exceeded my expectations about energy efficiency. My electric bill is drastically lower. I have all-electric and am on the equal pay plan. In the first 6 months I had this unit, my bill dropped from $168 to $116 a month. Next year will should be even better.

Waiting for the usual "everything looks good--see you next year," I was shocked to learn that the coil had rusted out and the unit was leaking refrigerant. After crawling into the attic to see first hand what the handler looked like, I was horrified. What unit looks like that in six short years?! I realized that my house was built with an inferior system. The decision to not throw good money after a bad product was easy. A complete upgrade was in order. A team of servicemen from O'Brien's took part in replacing the entire system, from handler to compressor. Each one courteous, patient and very skilled in their jobs. They also helped me supply more heat to my office which seemed to be cut off from the rest of the house.
Description of Work: My heating system required a "change up" . The folks at O'Brien's replaced my unit with a Trane HVAC. I was delighted with the professional, respectful and efficient way with which this job was completed. These guys really know what they are doing. I found them to go out of their way to explain and educate every step of the way. I am very pleased to recommend them.

+ -1 moreWe had an appointment for the service technician to do a routine maintenance on our heat pumps. The tech confirmed our fears that one unit was shot and the other was close. He arranged for the sales people to come that day. The sales team listened to what we wanted and gave the presentation. They installed one unit the next day and suggested we wait for the other until we could take advantage of the special financing deal they had in January. The techs did a good job installing the equipment with minimal inconveninece to us. I really liked that they put coverings over their workboots when they entered the house.
Description of Work: What began as a service ended up being a replacement of heating units.

+ -1 moreMaurice was prompt and professional, taking care to cover his shoes with booties before entering my home (nice touch though not necessary!) An estimate of repairs was provided and an offer was made to provide an estimate on a new system, which I declined. (My unit is 17 years old and probably not worth repairing - my opinion - I was not pressured in the least to make a purchase) I was quoted $950 to replace a "Reversing Valve" and was warned that the compressor may be damaged as a result of the problem with this part, and that could not be determined until the initial repair was made. A rough estimate of $1500 was provided verbally for the compressor should it be needed. These quotes were both inclusive of parts and labor. I don't know if the estimate given was reasonable as I have not shopped it around. Although I opted not to do repairs at this time because I cannot afford it, the service was excellent.
Description of Work: Heat pump was not functioning; full diagnostic service was performed for an original cost of $89 - used my Angie's list coupon and saved $20! Was hoping for a bandaid-type fix on my very old system but I did not get that lucky!

Everything is installed in a timely manner with professional and friendly attitude. As a bonus all workspace in attic, garage and house are left neat and clean and employees were wearing ?clean cover boots? while walking through the house. We really enjoy warm air, pre-heated hot water and $$$ savings from our new geothermal system and would highly recommend O?Brien Service Company for its installation and maintenance. They are very knowledgeable and passionate about this innovative technology. Reasonably priced with 30% of total project price Federal and $8,400 NC tax credits.

They replaced a 20-year old unit including the ductwork. They promised me that the work would be completed in a day’s time and they did. They sent out two guys and they did the work carefully. I had a few questions, which they answered. They cleaned up after themselves. I was very impressed with them. I would use them again in the future.

+ -1 moreI scheduled the work, and my wife took the day off when the crew installed the unit. Everything went smoothly as expected. Crew was prompt, courteous, and requested permission to drive on our lawn when moving the new unit in. We had to then wait for the inspections, which required me to take another day off work. No problems were found, and the inspector said (off the record) that I chosen a good vendor. Several weeks went by before Raeford came back for final payment. He handled the paperwork for my Progress Energy rebate, and delivered a bound package with warranty infomation, tax rebate submital paperwork, unit installer guide, and all the phone numbers I'll ever need for service. They also gave me a written submittal form for Angie's list, and asked me to submit. I explained I was a member, and that is how they got on my list in the first place! One other note - one of the vendors recommended by a friend who works in HVAC suggested I get a quote from O'Brien also. This really stunned me, but I had already scheduled them to quote at that point. Everyone said my current vendor (Carrier) was top notch, but I was not willing to pay more for less.
Description of Work: My 15 year old Carrier unit started leaking refrigerant at 10 years old. Every year I would get more added, until the service tech gave me a dire warning about it being on its last legs this year. So I got 5 quotes on a replacement system from highly regarded local HVAC companies, including O'Brien (several off Angies list, several recommendations, and my current supplier). Raeford Wiggins gave me a quote, and was the only vendor who offered to perform a complete heat load calculation on my property to assure the unit was properly sized. He shared the details that went into this work, and from his conclusions, I could see most of the other vendors were quoting oversized units. Only three of the five vendors had quoted on a properly sized system comparable to the quote I received from O'Brien. I expected O'Brien to be the high bidder, but they turned out to have an identical bid to the vendor I expected to be the low bidder for the same Trane unit when I backed out the cost for the service plan. The comparable Carrier system from my current supplier was more expensive, even though they offered bigger rebates and a higher cash discount. I decided to skip the service plan since I was buying a top of line unit (and in general I don't believe in them), but O'Brien's service plan was much less expensive than the plan from Carrier (in case your interested in one). So I called Raeford, and discussed my concerns about the job (air balance in one area needed work, and the installation of the outside unit was on a platform that needed to be re-sized). Raeford returned with the service manager, George Shepard, who explained how they would solve my problems, at no additional cost. They won the job at that point and requested 10% down to schedule the work.

They came out on a Sunday on an emergency. So far, everything has been holding up fine and there has not been any complication with them. I would definitely use them again in the future. I am probably going to sign up for a yearly contract with them for the checkup.
