I read reviews of this company before selecting them. It impressed me that the owner of the company personally responded to the reviews. This service provider had a discounted offer for Angie's List members which I took advantage of. I first contacted the provider via the Angie's List message system and they responded promptly to set up an appointment at a convenient time. They provided a two hour time window for the service. Dewayne, the technician, showed up in the early part of the allotted time. At the door, he noticed we don't wear shoes in the house, so without being asked, he removed his shoes and then when he needed to wear boots again, made sure he had booties over them to keep our floors clean. Thoughtful and respectful. He was polite, professional, courteous, and clearly knowledgeable. He proceeded to check and clean both the heat exchanger unit and the outside compressor unit. Other companies performing this work in the past took a perfunctory 20-30 minutes and did little or no cleaning. His visit lasted about an hour. I was amazed and impressed at how much more time he took, the thoroughness of work performed, and the explanations of the measurements he took to ensure my system was performing properly. He also made suggestions about alternate methods to filter return air if I wanted more convenience. My main system filter is in the attic and not easy to reach so one could install filters in every room where return air was collected. No one else had made this suggestion. I may consider it someday but for now the occasional trip to the attic doesn't bother me. He adjusted the blower motor speed to blow faster, which will help cool and heat my house more rapidly. He is the only service person to clean the coil in the air handler; he explained why it was necessary which was something completely new to me. I really appreciated this explanation. The replacement air filter he would have installed was not the same as a pleated higher filtration filter that I prefer. I keep a few of these so he replaced the filter with one of mine. Past servicers have brought higher filtration filters so this is just a point of comparison, not a criticism. I would much rather have the high quality of service and supply my own filter. If you are particular about filters, buy some. They should be changed more frequently than the system is serviced. There was no sales pressure to consider a new system or maintenance contract nor did he advocate any parts be replaced or changed. He did not bring up an annual service contract. but I did ask him about it. He provided details and costs, and they seemed reasonable. I did not sign up for one, but if I were to do it, I would use this company without hesitation. This ranks among the best experiences I have ever had with an HVAC service.

I ended up spending a little more than I anticipated. There was some miscommunication between provider and dispatcher. Overall the service was good once he arrived.

The service provider was friendly, personable and willing to explain what he was doing and why. I asked him outright if I could accompany him and ask questions.. He welcomed me along , answered all my questions, patiently explained the details I needed to understand how to maintain my heat pump as well as what signs to look for when deciding on replacement. He never used scare tactics to push me into a purchase. He was willing to give me the time I wanted to understand my HVAC and make an informed decision. I decided to not buy an HVAC at this moment but when I do I will consider Gentry.

It turned out fine. I did need one part that needed to be changed, but at least that was taken care of. I would use them again in the future.

Received a phone call on Monday that fan wasack ordered and could take a week to come in. Gentry called after a week and set up appointment - it was ten days after diagnostic visit. Tech. arrived promptly at appoiontment time and the fan was installed in an hour. He also installed a new capacitor. Tech was very courteous and professional. Tech said bill was over $600, but with $50 coupon from Valu Pak and other adjustments, came to $516. The cost was more than I expected, fortunately we did not need the A/C while waiting on the backorder, but Gentry responded quickly on initial contact on a Saturday.
Description of Work: Gentry came out on a Saturday, when the blower fan on our heat pump went out. He said the fan should be available on Monday or Tuesday and would cost between $50 and $500. Diagnostic visit cost $99.00.

Overall service went very well as Gentry representative was friendly, professional and an excellent communicator as we toured the AC system together.
Description of Work: We chose Gentry based on their offer through Angie's List to do a complete maintenance inspection of our air conditioning system. During the inspection the service provider found a worn condenser which we paid to replace. We also spoke about the age of our total HVAC system (installed in 1995) and the fact that it still works fine but is very old and far less efficient than modern systems. There was no sales pressure to make a change but we did discuss options, benefits and costs and we will likely make a change in the near future with Gentry as the provider.

I had an excellent experience with Gentry. On time for the appointment. Very thorough and professional. Dwayne allowed me to watch while he tuned up our two heat pumps. I like to learn how things work as a service technician is working. I always ask if they mind, as some technicians don't like having someone watch over their shoulder. Dwayne was great and explained what work he was performing, gave me an idea of what should be addressed in the future, and fixed the part that had failed. I could not be more pleased and feel that I got good value for the work performed.
Description of Work: I purchased two A/C tune up specials for $49 each for my two heat pump systems. Dwayne the technician was fantastic. Very thorough and walked me through all of the work as he was performing it. The capacitor on one of the outside units had failed. Dwayne had the part on his truck and installed it as he was tuning up the systems.

The technician was very professional, he explained everything he was doing for the system. We were impressed with his knowledge and signed on for a service contract to have them come twice a year to service the system. I am very pleased with the service and wou,ld recommend them toothers.

The installer, Robert, was prompt and courteous. He explained each aspect of the inspection and his findings. He made a good effort to get the old thermostat to work properly, but it couldn't be done, as it was defective. He offered to replace it (labor only) if still under warranty, but I opted for a new one instead. The service tech at Gentry advised me later by phone in some detail on the different models, which helped me pick one to suit my needs. The installation and setup went quickly, and it has been performing very well since.
Description of Work: Performed a full inspection of my HVAC system, per the Big Deal. In addition, replaced a faulty blower motor capacitor and diagnosed my much-higher electric bills during past winter as caused by a faulty thermostat. Returned to install new programmable thermostat and program it. Also replaced a burned-out motor wire. I also signed up for an annual HVAC inspection/maint. program with Gentry, which is included in the above cost.

BEWARE!! This business will try to rip you off. I purchased an Angie’s List coupon for a HVAC service and inspection. The person they sent, like most conmen, was very nice and courteous. He convinced me that my HVAC system could flood my basement at anytime and the best recourse was a full replacement of my heat pump. I was told that Carrier (manufacturer) was offering financing at 0% for three years, so thinking it was the best option we said yes. Within hours I was reconsidering, thinking about spending nearly $6000 without getting other bids seemed like a dumb move on my part. A very dumb move in fact. I called Gentry and told them I wished to cancel the contract until I could receive other bids. At first they seemed to pressure me about the fact that I had signed a sales contract and secured financing until I reminded them that state law as well as their own contract says I can cancel within 72 hours. That changed their tune to no pressure and polite. However it only gets worse from here. I called two other companies to get an estimate for a new system. The first to arrive was Carolina Comfort and boy oh boy did they have a different diagnosis. Doug from Carolina Comfort informed me that there was NOTHING major wrong with my system and in no way did it need to be replaced. He did point out that my system was missing a failsafe switch on my pump and the pump was a little old. By installing the switch and replacing the pump I would protect myself from a flooding situation. Gentry did not even tell me about the missing switch and did not offer pump replacement even as an option. Additionally Doug found various pieces of trash in the unit (there from previous owner) meaning the Gentry rep didn’t even clean my system as he was paid to do. Nor did he tell me about pouring bleach into the system seasonally to fight mold and buildup. He also took out my nice and still clean filter and put in a cheap crappy one. He also sprayed something onto the coils that made them look rusty and perhaps leaking but when Doug and I looked at them they were dry and had very little rust. Doug said it looked exactly as it should given the units age and the rust could be stopped by adding a piece of duck tape to stop metal from touching different metal, which was causing the rust. I cannot tell you how happy I was to meet an honest man working for an honest business. Believe it or not, it gets worse. Thinking I have dodged a huge bullet I breathe a sigh of relief and then I pick up my mail. In the mail is a credit card from Wells Fargo Bank with a credit line of nearly $10,000. Knowing we had not applied for a revolving credit line we promptly called the Bank who informed us that the card WAS the Carrier financing and that Gentry should have informed us of this fact. I was under the impression that the financing was similar to a car loan and NOT a revolving credit line. This is blatantly dishonest of Gentry and may well be a violation of the law. Needless to say I AM FURIOUS about this. In closing let me just say that this company is at best just a bunch of commission based salesman and at worst a bunch of dishonest conmen. Either way, keep them as far away from you as possible. Carolina Comfort and I am sure others too, do not operate on sales commissions and will actually give you an honest diagnosis and estimate. In the end I spent only $200 not $6000 and found an honest company, which I consider a victory, all things considered.

Dear member, I was both surprised and disappointed when I received your review last week. I can tell you that this review has prompted multiple meetings and discussions within our organization. I am truly sorry that you were unhappy with our service and that you feel so strongly that we behaved unethically. Our very first Core Value is: “Do the right thing every time even if it hurts”. It is clear that we have given you the wrong impression of our company. I have authorized our accounting department to refund the $49.00 you paid for the tune-up on your system. Having said that, I wanted to provide a few facts for other members who may be reading this review…. First, we were informed that this customer wished to cancel his contract when we read this review on 06/10/13. On 05/23/13 he called to say that he wanted to get other estimates on his new system but that he wanted to be kept on our schedule for installation. After multiple follow up calls with no response, we had placed his installation on hold. Second, our technicians are not commission based but are paid by the hour. The Nate Certified technician that performed the tune up suggested that a drain pan and safety switch be installed to avoid having water damage in the event of a malfunction. This led to the customer asking for the cost of a new system, financing options and his desire to purchase. Third, as with other retail purchases, this customer provided personal financial information in order to be approved for credit, was approved, and was informed. Receiving the letter of approval and card in the mail is the normal process for any retail purchase. Receiving the card in the mail did not obligate this member in any way nor did it have any, negative financial impact. Regardless or our position related to this unfortunate situation, our 50 year history in the Asheville area has proven to me that customer’s perceptions are extremely important even if they are incorrect. Our reputation in the community is of greatest importance. We pride ourselves in having a great reputation, an A++ rating with the Better Business Bureau and an A Rating with Angie’s List. Camera showed white fuzzy pollen and maple "swimmer" seeds that should not have been in the exhaust out of the furnace to the the branches to each room vent. Obviously, filters upstream from the camera were not operating properly, or input to the ducts was coming from the wrong places. Both pollen and maple swimmers came out in the stuff vacuumed out. Both were very bright and clean, and therefore recent. Provider should tell the client that the duct cleaning can only extend to the spots where the exhausts come together, which is not at the furnace. Most people expect the latter and can be disappointed -- as I was -- if the length of the ducts cleaned is not specified up front. Use of the camera is a definite plus. Memory or film added would be even better. Finding the larger debris was crucial in proving that the problem was upstream of the ducts.
Description of Work: Ran a camera up ducts from vents in rooms to the branch point where central exhaust breaks into the feeds to the room vents. ran vacuum from each exhaust to the each branchpoint and extracted whatever was in each vent over that distance.

eventually had to call someone else to check on unit, ended up needing to replace. Unit was loosing Freon because there was a screw thru the Freon line. No one else had worked on the unit except Gentry.

.He called to let me know he was on his way and when he arrived, he was careful to use protection over his shoes when he came in the house. He checked out the inside portion of the AC then the outside. The fan wouldl not run due to a bad capacitor. He replaced the capacitor. Because he was so professional, and the age of my AC, I went ahead and signed up for a service plan. I was quite pleased with his courtesy, professionalism, and did not feel pressured to buy anything extra

After emailing the company through Angieslist, I received a prompt phone call and early appointment. A courteous, knowledgeable young man arrived as scheduled. He spent 45 minutes to an hour inspecting and cleaning our air conditioning unit, describing its condition, efficiency and how long it would likely last. He said if I was going to live here a long time, I might want to invest in a newer, more efficient system, but it would continue to work well for a while. I was very satisfied with the service.
