The serviceman was professional. However, the part cost of a capacitor was $187.00. This identical part was available online for $57.00. I understand that co0mpanies need to make a profit but this markup is woeful. They also do the recommendation of their "premier efficiency program" to ensure operating efficiency.

Given the age of the unit and the high cost of the repair, I contacted Home Depot customer service as we purchased the unit through them. Home Depot contacted the original installation company ARS who came out on Sunday to evaluate the problem. Their technician identified the problem as a pinhole on the refrigerant line. He further stated that the cause was a bolt which should have been removed during the initial installation. Vibration had caused the bolt to open the pinhole which resulted in the loss of the refrigerant. I asked about the coil and was told that it was undamaged. ARS repaired the line and refilled the system with 7 lbs of refrigerant. More importantly, they apologized for the problem and took Responsibility since they had done the installation. Most Importantly, they performed all the work and provided the refrigerant under Their warranty at no charge to me. I will be submitting a report separately for ARS in order to have them listed in Angies list for members to be able to utilize them. I have also purchased a service contract for this unit and the 20 year old system in our attic from ARS to service twice per year going forward.
Description of Work: Had called to check out our AC system which was 4.5 years old (Trane XL13) I chose this vendor since the installer of our unit ARS was not on Angies List. I filled the online form from the Angies list site, and the very next morning had an email confirmation and appointment for the same morning. The technician diagnosed the problem as the coil leaking causing the loss of all the refrigerant. I was advised that the part was under warranty, however labor and refrigerant were not included, and the estimate was about $1900.00 for the repair. ($1200 + refrigerant)

I called and the serviceman was at our house at 8:00a.m. as scheduled. The service was performed within an hour as promised. He was courteous and knowledgeable when I asked questions.

Since moving into our home 4 years ago, we have not had any service done on our A/C unit and we doubt the previous owner had anything done either (3 years previous). Our promised time of arrival was between 2-4 PM. They arrived close to 4 PM and reviewed with us why we called (our A/C unit was not blowing cold enough). There were two men (one I believe was recently hired and the second man was training him). They checked the interior unit and discovered it was covered with ice and needed to be defrosted. Because we were not told ahead of time to turn off our A/C, they did not charge us extra for waiting for this, which we appreciated. It was determined that our exterior unit needed refrigerant and the capacitor needed to be replaced. They also informed up we needed to fix a switch but that could wait. Our exterior unit was cleaned, refrigerant was added (2lbs) and the capacitor was replaced. The repairman stated he was surprised our unit was still running with how badly the capacitor had eroded. We were able to view all the work done and verify the capacitor's state. All work was completed in a timely manner and our A/C was back to super running condition. In addition, we did sign up for their program which includes 2 tune-up's a year (we had been planning on getting some kind of program so this worked out great!) . The program also allowed us to save money toward the current repairs and any future repairs including no premium charges for after hours work. We were extremely pleased with the work!

Update in response to Horne's response: Horne is correct - we did contact them initially because of a Big Deal offer. They came in mid-May to do the service offered and found they were not able to provide service because of problems with our units. They promptly refunded the Big Deal money as they were not able to do the work. I definitely appreciated that. At that time, we requested that they supply a quote for replacement of the two units, which they provided two days later. Two weeks later our A/C units completely shut down and were non-operational - which had nothing to do with Horne, it was merely coincidence since we had obtained a quote from them and considered them our "first" contact on replacement. Having said that, I stand by my comment that the tech didn't really respond to my husband's questions while on site, and that the quote did not address specific questions my husband had asked during the initial visit. Original review: Our air conditioning went out over Memorial Day weekend and we began getting quotes from various companies. Horne was one of the first we contacted, based on the stellar reviews here on Angie's List. However, my husband was disappointed by the quote we eventually got. He also didn't get the impression that the tech that came out to review the situation really paid attention to my husband's questions - the notes included with the quote did not answer a few things my husband specifically asked about that the tech said would be in the quote. In the end, we went with another vendor.

Went as well as it could for having an unexpected expense. I actually watched him diagnose the problem and he showed me his repair. We took a gamble that the compressor would kick back on. He had some reservations that it would kick back on and he completly explained the gamble. Good guy. The gamble paid off!
Description of Work: He repaired a hole and got the AC working again. Honest, courteous, professional! Everything you can ask for if your shelling out a bunch of cash. Only good thing of the day was hiring these guys.

Fantastic service. I left a message with their answering service after business hours (around 6:45 p.m.), got a call back from Chris (I think) within 15 minutes, and Terry (I think) was at my house within 2 hours. He inspected the unit, diagnosed the problem as a broken condenser, got a replacement from his truck, and we had cool air within about an hour of his arrival. He asked if I might be interested in a maintenance plan, but I didn't feel like he was pushy in the least - he just offered it and then gave me the details when I asked for more info. He gave me some additional detail on my A/C unit (age, other issues that weren't a problem now, but could pop up down the road, etc.), before he left, explained the bill, accepted payment and then went on his way. The price seemed reasonable, especially given the amazing service. Quick response, smooth process, reasonable price...and best of all, I have my A/C back! I would absolutely use these guys again and would highly recommend them to anyone.

They’ve been reliable, show up when they say they will, and their prices are fair. I have an annual contract with them, so I pay once, and I have two visits from them (once in the spring, once in the fall). That also puts me on their “priority list”, if something does go wrong. They always make sure to solve the problem; if one technician can’t figure it out, they’ll send another one out. Overall, the experience has been great.
Description of Work: They’ve done my heating and air conditioning maintenance twice a year. In the past seven years, they’ve installed two new units. The TRANE units that I purchased were pricier, but the systems have worked great without any problems. We have a big home and both of them work very well.

I consider myself to be quite fortunate that my A/C chose to stop working on one of the cooler nights in what has been an incredible heat wave. I heard this loud buzzing noise on Friday night, immediately turned off my thermostat and logged on to Angie's List. After looking through a few profiles, I left a message for Horne Heating and Air Conditioning. I'm so glad I did. I told their after hours answering service that I didn't require an emergency visit, and instead, would appreciate a call on Saturday. I received a call first thing Saturday morning, with an advisement that I'd pay $120 for the Saturday visit. Within 2 hours, my guardian angel...aka Mike Borum appeared on my doorstep. It took him less than 30 minutes to diagnose my unit and inform me that I would need a new motor. Fast forward a little over an hour, and my A/C was back in business! Some make look for a cheaper price, but from what I understand, this price is in line with having a motor replaced. Couple that with the fact that Mike graciously reminded me that I needed to print my Angie's List coupon so that I could receive $30 off my total costs, and you have one satisfied customer. My A/C is working perfectly! I will definitely be using this company when it's time to have a tune up done on my heating unit this year.
Description of Work: Weekend call to have A/C unit diagnosed. Fan had stopped working, so I requested a repairman to come to analyze the problem. New motor was installed in A/C unit.

This particular unit has experienced freon loss previously. We have had it charged each time which has so far resolved the problem with lack of air cooling. This time it was recommended that we replace the unit or evaporator coil which we are now considering since otherwise this will be an ongoing issue. The service tech was very knowledgeable and professional and we consider his recommendation/remedy to be in line with what we have been experiencing.

On the hottest weekend Charlotte has experienced in 2012 (100+ temps) our AC went out. Called Horne based on reviews on Angie's List. No one even answered the phone, we called no less than four times. Called two other highly recommended AC companies from Angie's List, immediate response with Monday appointments for estimates to replace 15 yr old AC unit. I take this as an indication of what Hornes' overall service would be like.

Unbelievable is the first word that comes to mind when responding to the unwarranted, negative feedback you provided on Angie's List. I personally checked the inbound phone records from July 1st and confirmed you called our office three times between 9:13 and 9:15 AM. The call volume during that entire weekend was as record-breaking as the temperatures. There is a limited capacity of calls our service representatives can handle at any given time and the same can be said for any other HVAC contractor. There were several others in a similar circumstance that waited for an answer or called back within 10 minutes… and most were serviced & cooling on the same day! Horne Heating and Air Conditioning was never even given a chance to demonstrate the high level of service we have provided to Angie's List clients and thousands of other clients since 1983. Instead, a derogatory and unnecessary report was submitted simply because your phone calls were not answered quickly enough to your liking. Without the opportunity to actually prove that our A rating on Angie’s List has been well-earned, it is disappointing that this outlet was used to vent your frustration. They really messed it up repeatedly. I called 7 times and they couldn’t do the service. They told me for 2 days that I was next on the list and they never showed up. I have people who rent this house from me, and I had to keep calling this company to meet me there so I could let them in and do the work. They never called me or came out. The first time, they made the simple mistake of writing down the wrong phone number. They messed up my phone number the first time and it wasn’t a big deal. I called them the next day. They said that I was the next one on the list. Then, when I called them later, they said that the technician was at another house and that they would be there soon. I waited until 7 P.M. and no one ever showed up. I sat around and waited from noon to 7. They said that they just sent Trey out and they sent the guy somewhere else. At this point, I asked to speak with the owner. He said that, because I was on the Angie’s List deal, I was a low priority which I understand. I understand that this may have been just a service call and that they may not be able to get to me, and I would’ve understood that. If they would’ve just given me the truth and told me that they can’t get to me until next week, that would’ve been fine.
Description of Work: They were supposed to come out and do a tune-up on my heating and a/c system.

Great - Don was on time, professional and found the problem cheated by the previous achpan Miller chiracty. 3 leaks that that should wet have been there professional service pantered faster.

Quick dispatch, knowledgeable and professional technician, work done right the first time...excellent!
Description of Work: Excellent tech dispatched quickly to service call. Discovered an insect had crawled into a control relay for the A/C and repaired quickly and properly. Very happy with service experience and will definitely use again!

Everything went really. They were very responsive and caught a number of problems during a routine check up. They also helped us save a significant amount of money in terms of changing to a more energy efficient unit.
Description of Work: The repalced the gas pack on our hosue.
