He sold me the largest one they make, which was way too big for the house. It cost me $12,000. In addition to that, they sprayed foam insulation inside the attic. He had two bozos do it. They gave me a bill and he said, "No. This is not what you'll pay me. You pay me double that because you're doing it through me." I felt ripped off. They charged a little under $1,000 and he charged me $2,000. It was just to heat the upstairs of the house. It was not the entire house. I just felt that they had taken gross advantage of a female because they thought they could get away with it. They did show up when they were supposed to.
Description of Work: I purchased a heat pump from them.

Furnace was not coming on in the dead of Winter, and I'm a single dad of a four year old girl. Also, money is not exactly abundant right after Christmas. Info beforehand: I know I need to get a new furnace eventually, but I couldn't right at that time. First, I called Morris Jenkins, and they didn't even want to fix the problem. They mentioned only half of what was wrong, unlike the person from Horne. Then, all he harped about was "how's your credit?" and "you can finance one" and "get a new one, get a new one, get a new one"... this kind of thing. I told him to leave and paid the $90 fee to come out which they gladly accepted and left. Anyway, called Horne Heating and Air Conditioning. They CREDITED me the $90 I paid Morris Jenkins for them to come out. Guy was nice, professional, fast, and very knowledgeable. He easily identified the problem, ordered the parts, installed them, and they even allowed me to use a $30 coupon! He did tell me I needed eventually to have my furnace replaced, but he didn't make it the only subject/topic of conversation like Morris Jenkins did. In short, thank you, Angie's List! And, thank you Horne! You both saved the day for me and my daughter. Will NEVER use another heating and air service and am telling all of my friends and relatives. The rep's name was Doug Farmer... was awesome. Thanks again!

Jason went above and beyond to assist us when we were in a bind. We had mold remediation performed on our crawlspace, but the cleaners inadvertently sprayed the control boards on our basement's HVAC. Jason cam out immediately and assessed the problem. We were leaving to go out of the country the next day and was worried about our pipes freezing at night. Even though he did not have the board we needed on their truck, he searched and found one and kindly installed it at 10:30PM so that we wouldn't have to get up at 7AM to have it installed in time for our 9AM flight out. We really appreciate Jason's perseverance and professionalism.

Excellent job by the folks at Horne. Approximately eight years ago we had a new addition built on our house and-regretfully-went with the low bidder for the HVAC system who will remain nameless. Nothing but trouble from the beginning with too many issues to list here prompting a total replacement. We received 4 bids with Horne being the highest by a small margin. We chose Horne based on company reviews and the professional manner in which the quote was prepared and presented-they just came across as a competent installer. Horne did not disappoint-Jim Chandler (sales) , George and Omar ( installation) were great. On time, the Horne crew tackled a really tough job in our old home in Myers Park leaving a neat and clean installation. Only regret is not having them involved 8 years ago! We couldn't be happier with the experience.

Larry Hoekstra met with us and really listened to our description of problems we have had with the ductwork and HVACs since buying the house in 1987. He led the complete redesign of the ductwork system and suggested appropriate replacement units for the Heating and Air Conditioning systems. Once the project and price was agreed, a top-notch team including Mark, Jonathan, and Michael immediately began work. They were prompt, courteous, and very professional. Their concern for our satisfaction was obvious, and they all worked hard and harmoniously. Their attention to detail was remarkable, and they took no shortcuts. They offered helpful and reasonable solutions when they saw issues outside the scope of the project. Horne is honest and they earned our TRUST! This family-owned Company's proposal was not the lowest price, but the difference was clearly worth it considering the quality of people who work for them and the quality of work performed. We wish we had found them years ago and can say we will not use anyone else in the future!

I asked the above question and the rep. explained how it was better to replace the whole system and re-run duct work. I did listen to his reasoning regarding the work. At this time I used an industral sealer and repaired the system myself. It has been working fince since then. That will buy me time to decide how to approach this.
Description of Work: I asked how much it would be to replace the A/C part of my system since that is where the coolant leak was.

My next door neighbor's tree fell on the back of my house during a storm. I wasn't sure if there was damage to the AC unit so I called Horne and left a message. They called me back promptly from my property (I was at a hotel) and told me that there did not appear to be any damage and to call if anything happened when I turned it on. I thought that was way above and beyond the call of duty and will definitely call them again. And on top of that, he didn't even charge me for looking at the unit. He put my mind at ease because I knew he would be there if I had any problems.

Description of Work: Gave a quote. Told us it was for a 2 1/2 ton unit. When we looked it up we found he was using a 2 ton and letting us believe we were getting a 2 1/2. When we tried to call his manager, we could not get a call back.

I've had issues with my AC unit since I added an addition earlier this year. I've called several HVAC companies out and they have repaired what they thought was the problem. The system would work well for several days (maybe a week) and then it would not cool. Other techs checked Freon levels, checked for leaks, and changed a pistons, all providing temporary fix. This time I thought I'd call a highly rated Angie's List HVAC company to get a more knowledgeable person. However, I received the opposite. I gave a full description to your tech. His responses were short and curt. Without even looking at the unit he said you probably need a new unit that can handle your house. (He was wrong). He spent less than 5 minutes checking the unit in the rear and refused to do any test. He came back with a quick prognosis and I said I have 2 options. First, I could add Freon at a cost of about $450 (this would be a temp fix). Second option would be to replace the unit at a cost of $5-6k+. I asked him about running test to find the leak and he refused, he made it seem like it was a waste of time. I quickly told him to leave and to send me the invoice for $90. I got the feeling from the beginning that he didn't care about problem and he was looking to get paid and leave as soon as possible. The next day, I called another HVAC company and they promptly came out and spent the time to test the system and found that it was the filter drier on the outside unit that was restricting airflow. They fixed it and the system has been working exceptionally well.
Description of Work: The service provider came out to my home to diagnose an ongoing issue that I had with the system leaking freon.

Technician found the issue quickly and replaced the component. He also checked the other aspects of my system.

The technician showed up about 8:00 pm on Friday evening. He was friendly even though the temperatures were near 100 that day and I am sure that it had been a long day. By the time he arrived, the problem with my unit had disappeared and the unit seemed to be working correctly. Jason, checked out outdoor unit to determine if he could find what would have caused problem. He climbed under the house (tight crawlspace) and checked the air handler. Could not find what had caused the outdoor unit to cycle on and off most of the previous day. We could not get the problem to repeat. He tightened the connections and performed a good checkout. He said that the freon was a little low but it was still cooling per specifications so he did not recommend adding freon. Overall, technician was very friendly and did not try to sell unnecessary services. I felt like I could trust him to tell me what I need and not try to sell me services or equipment that I did not need whoch is important to me. He also said that if I called with the problem again within 30 days that they would not charge another diagnosis fee. I will be using them again. The only complaint I have was that I did not feel like I was given good information from the scheduling folks at the office. I know that it was very hot and the technicians were booked solid which is understandable and that it would probably take a while to get someone to the house. I had called early the previous day when the problem was occurring with my unit and they said that someone would definitely be coming out that day. The office person told me that I would have to completely shut my system down so that it would not be frozen when a tech arrived. We shut the system down and my wife stayed at home all afternoon waiting with the a/c off but no one ever showed up the first day. As busy as they were due to the high temperatures I can understand not being able to make it the first day. My only complaint was that I was told that they would show up and they did not. I am giving a 'B' for responsiveness because of this. Overall however the tech was good, honest, and friendly and I will use them again.
Description of Work: Perform heat pump evaluation / diagnosis due to unit intermittently cutting off even though temperature in house was several degrees higher than the setpoint on the thermostat. Outside temperature was around 100 degrees.

Jon and everyone with Horne Heating and Air Conditioning were professional, helpful, knowledgeable, and friendly. My builder grade HVAC system was on its last leg after 12 years and after a thorough inspection and a meeting about my wants and needs, Jon developed four estimates depending on the extent of work I wanted to complete. After carefully weighing my options and checking around, I chose Horne H&AC to completely replace my system including reworking the ductwork in the attic to make it more efficient. They were finished in 3 1/2 days, cleaned up all of the mess, and made sure I was satisfied with the quality of work. My house is more comfortable than ever before and with the recent hot temperatures, I'm very happy to report that my electric bill is less than half of what it was for the same month last year!

The reason I like using Horne Heating and Air is the professionalism and knowledge their people have. From the time I called them to the time they visited, it went like clockwork. First, a phonecall to the service center where someone works a schedule that FITS me not the other way around. Next, we discussed any outstanding issues so the technician addressed them when he arrived. Everything was completed in short order, culminating in a detailed report giving me all the work that was done, readings on all the vents, and new filters installed. In this world where quality services is not a given, it is good to know that this company is a slam-dunk.
Description of Work: Horne Heating and Air conducted a summer tune-up and replaced the filters.

This company requires all of your credit card info before they will put you on the calendar. This is alittle concerning. I've never given payment info before the work was started much less scheduled. I have 2 homes and use many services to maintain them.

I called Horne as a new customer on The morning of Friday May 22. Jason,their service tech, was at my house the same afternoon troubleshooting our unit. He was very friendly and extremely professional and knowledgable. He checked the unit,which is 12 years old and found nothing wrong. He then checked our breaker box and found the breaker to that unit was flipped. He changed out the breaker and we were up and running again. What is most amazing about Jason is that it was necessary to move my riding lawnmower in orde to gain access to our breaker box. Jason noticed that the belt was off of my mower. I told him that I noticed the belt was off the day before as my husband was out of town and I wanted to surprise him by cutting the grass but was unable to do so because the belt was off. I went into the house after moving the mower and a few minutes later, Jason popped his head in to let me know he had put the belt back on my mower!! How amazing is that!!! Is there another ac tech in the world that would have done that??? Jason definitely went above and beyond with his excellent customer service. He was very honest and did not try to upsell me. I am now a very satisfied life long customer.

I had an issue with my air conditioner not coming on, they came out found out what the problem was and because I had a maintenance contract with them it didn't cost me anything. It took them about an hour to repair the unit. There were no unexpected issues, the unit wasn't working, they found the wire that was bad and they reattached it.

I wanted to take a moment to recommend Horne?s Heating & Air to anyone who is looking to replace their current system or just needs a tune-up. My husband & I were dreading the replacement of our current AC System and after reviewing and meeting with other local A/C companies we chose Horne and I?m so glad we did. George and his crew were awesome from beginning to end. They arrived at our home on-time with all the needed man power and equipment to begin our new A/C replacement. The A/C was replaced in one day?s time and all the guys were extremely professional and courteous. They even got along with our 4 Fur Friends throughout the install. George answered all our questions throughout the day and continuously let us know where they were in the process. We couldn?t have asked for a better experience. We used them for the diagnostic but not the repair. They were easily accessible and responsive. They knew what they were talking about.

Jason came out next day on a Saturday to assess. Turned out to be more complex issue than originally thought but he walked us through everything and it completely made sense. He showed us the parts and cleaned the outside unit. Had to order a board - ordered it Monday morning, installed Monday afternoon. Faulty thermostat continued to be an issue. Addressed that as well. Pleased with our joint effort to 'bandaid' the unit - I feel confident it will last a good few years as we save to replace. Really liked Jason and his upfront demeanor. Pleasure to work with. Highly recommend.

I told him we were done here, paid him $90.00 to leave the premises, I brought out a couple different HVAC companies to assess the situation, both confirmed Freon level was good , faulty wire was cause. Unfortunately for Horne, they didn't know I was fishing for which company I was going to use to replace my complete system as it is time, $10,000+ loss for Horne~ I can now assume that Horne writes it's own reviews on Angie's list, only thing that can explain their good rating?
Description of Work: Service tech showed up, I told him HVAC system wasn't functioning, he went outside to condensing unit. After some time passed I walked around to see what was going on and found the guy smoking a cigarette and heard a hissing sound which turned out to be from him letting my Freon out of the system. He then explained that we "were low on Freon" and it would be "$300.00 to replace it".

I have always been happy with Horne HVAC. They installed a new HVAC and Water Heater in a condo I own in 2011, did a water heater in a different condo last year, currently do all the tune-ups on our systems, and are the first people we call to get anything done related to the HVAC systems.
Description of Work: Our furnace stopped heating. They came out late on a weeknight to get it running for the evening and recommended purchasing a new switch. They ordered it for us and installed within a week, and the furnace kept running in the meantime.
