Just as advertised - wonderful. The entire process took < than a hour and the results were written up. He did suggest signing up for the yearly maintenance/support agreement which we're considrering. Although the cost for the yearly agreement seemed a bit high if this first visit is an indication of their quality it may be worth it.
Description of Work: 72 Degrees was running a special on a HVAC check up and with the summer heat upon us it was perfect timing. They performed a check up on on larger unit and it came back with 2 thumbs up. The technician was very professional, timely and efficient.

Refused to do business with me just because I mentioned that I am a renter, wouldn't transfer me to someone who could "Explain" why. Really insulting. When the company see's this and writes their canned response, just remember that I called to get my AC inspected to see what is going on with written approval from my landlord. To reject a customer (which is their right to do so) just plain stinks when they wont even explain why. Bad experience for me, makes me feel like my money is not good enough for them. ph

Dear Member; We would have relished an opportunity to provide you with an inspection and service with verbal and written approval from your landlord. Very few HVAC companies will service renters without this much needed approval, and while we tried to explain this to you upon the initial call, we were not iven a full opportunity to do so. If you still have a need for service, please feel free to call and ask for me personally, and I will quickly obtain the necessary approval to work in your home. Thank You, Eddie Blanchard Owner and GM of 72 Degrees

Explained earlier, but here it is again: This was a heating/air conditioning checkup I signed up for. The technician arrived early (which was good) and I was called first to make sure I was home. He examined the unit, did whatever technicians do, and then went beyond the usual routine by looking at the house air filters. Turns out I had too many effective filters and could have damaged the air conditioning unit. I had a rather inept service company for years before hiring 72 Degrees and this was the first I had heard of such a possibility. The technician showed me where the "pre-filters" were in my crawl space and we determined that it was best to remove them. Moreover, unlike my previous inept company, he didn't try to sell me anything or predict dire consequences if I didn't buy this or that "extra service." What a relief to finally have service I felt I could trust!!

No problems at all. Service techs are punctual. They office calls ahead, day before as a reminder. They also call the day prior to the appointment to let you know the tech is on his way. They are neat in appearance, courteous. Keep boots covered when in the home. They button things up when they are done and do a fantastic job. A great company. Good value. Reliable service. I value the service they provide and that's why I have been with them for four years.
Description of Work: First time I found about 72 Degree service in Cary, NC was from a service van in my neighbors drive way. I asked the technician to stop by after his job and he did. The man, like me was a veteran and greeted me with a firm hand shake and a smile. That was the beginning of my experience with 72 degrees and that was more than 4 years ago. The service is affordable, I have the annual maintenance so it is a repeat charge every month spread out over the year and I get two service calls plus a discount on any necessary repairs. As with any business you meet some employees that are better than others. Those that don't make the grade dont stick around like the ones I have come to know. Dan is my friend and expert technician. I rely on his expertise, recommendations and advice. The company has never failed to respond to a reasonable request. My only complaint is it takes weeks to schedule an appointment in the busy parts of the season so you know their is a demand for the service they provide. I am a pleased customer. Everything was great! I even ended up buying a maintenance agreement. There was a small mix up regarding after-hours answering service. They left a message asking me to confirm my appointment. The message service didn't pass my return message to the company. That was a minor mix up with the answering service though. The actual work performed was great. They were on time. The guy was training another person, but he had such a good personality & was knowledgeable & educational! He told me that there was a part that didn't have to be replaced right away but that I should replace soon. He saved me money in the long run by offering the service agreement & the repair at the same time. He also said I could ask for him to be my technician anytime; he gave me his business card so could ask for him easily. I was so happy with him - He was very good & so nice! I was impressed with level of detail, expertise, & education provided.

Hello! The reason we did not come for the second appointment was because your husband called to let us know the leak seemed to be fixed and cancelled our follow-up service call. Perhaps you all thought the temporary fix would work, but we knew a follow up appointment was necessary to fix the leak permanently. While we're glad you were satisfied with the work we did complete, I'm interested to know if the leak continued to grow worse after our visit. Please give us a call if you would like to extend another opportunity to 72 Degrees to service your system as originally planned and ask for me personally. Thank You! I have a contract with them and they come twice a year. Their prices were too high for the service that I got from them. I bought a whole new system from them and it almost burned my whole house down because they had wired it wrong. The wires were all glued together and when they replaced it they never replaced the compressor. Now, I have to buy a new compressor because it is not good. They don’t have good people working for them. They gave me a time limit between 8am to 12pm for coming home and were always within the time limit; they were pretty good at being punctual. As far as presenting themselves the workers that came here are very professional. When my contract’s tenures up I am going to save up and buy a new system. I am definitely not going to continue with them.

The technician showed up right on time, which was nice. I did not like his manner in terms of sort of barging into the house; he asked where the thermostat was and then just sort of opened up the door and came in. I was standing in front of the door, and I just felt like I was pushed out of the way. I would have ignored that, and just assumed I was being a little sensitive, but at several other points during our meeting, the same thing happened - at one point I heard a knock on the screen door and came from the back of the house to find him already standing inside, which felt intrusive. The other part of this inspection that I did not like was that at every turn, the exchange we were having felt like some kind of sales pitch. I was encouraged, on numerous occasions, to sign up for their $179.00 regular service program and then told that if I did, I would save money on parts. And after being told that I would save money on parts, I was told that I needed one, of course. From what I gleaned from our meeting, one of the parts mentioned was something that seemed like it needed to be replaced; the part was supposed to be operating at a certain electrical level, and he showed me that it was not. I eventually opted to replace that part. But then I was told that I needed about $1200.00 worth of other parts, which in my opinion, were not needed. I'd just had work done on my furnace - about $1200.00 worth of work, and I trust the company that did the work, and they never indicated that the motor to the blower/heat exchanger needed to be replaced, at a cost of $985. I understand that the technician felt he was doing his job in giving me this information, but I just didn't feel like his explanation was completely accurate - he's the professional, but by that point he'd tried to sell me about $1500.00 worth of products/services, so I just didn't feel like I could trust him. Also, I should say that even before I knew what was happening - in other words, he'd not explained a single thing about the inspection - he pulled out this full color book of parts and said "is there somewhere I can put this so we can go over what you need," all the while sort of prompting me to back up because he was clearly sort of pushing his way in. You know how some doctors don't have a good bedside manner... well, this gentleman simply didn't have any manners in terms of how one should behave in the home of a stranger/customer. Honestly, if it would not have cost me another service call to call out the company I often use, I'd not have purchased anything more from 72 Degrees. As it stands, I did end up purchasing the part he told me that I needed, and only because I could actually see that it was not working as it should. The entire experience, from start to finish, felt like dealing with a untrustworthy, pushy used car salesman. Lastly, after asking him to be sure to write down everything he discovered so I could check it out at a later date, I received my carbon copy receipt only to realize that his handwriting was near illegible; I can barely make out any of what he wrote, so not only am I not 100% sure of the name of the part I purchased, I couldn't read his other recommendations.
Description of Work: I purchased an Angie's List deal for $49.99 for an pre-summer A/C inspection. It was a service that I knew we needed, and though we use another company pretty regularly, I thought $49.99 was a good deal for the services offered.

Dear Member: We're sorry to hear about your disappointing tune-up service! We never want a customer to feel that our technicians are pushy when suggesting needed repairs, and are certainly surprised to hear the employee that came to service your home was uncomfortably assertive. I spoke with that employee, and he did not intend to come across as pushy or "salesy" that day. He unintentionally hurried through his communications with you as his work schedule was full, and for that we apologize. This issue is a first for us, and has certainly been addressed. I'm sure it was difficult to hear that the motor on your heat exchanger is worn and soon needs to be replaced as it could stop your system from working. We're surprised the HVAC company that recently came to do repairs on your system didn't address this - especially since those repairs were also costly. At 72 Degrees, we train our service techicians to educate customers about their systems when called to someone's home, and that education should allow you to make informed decisions on when and why repairs are needed. As we never want our customers to be dissatisfied, I'd like to offer you a free tune-up service this fall, and would also like to talk with you about any questions you have regarding needed repairs. Please give us a call at 919-777-2777 to schedule a conference call with me at your convenience, as well as a complimentary tune-up service. Thank You, Eddie Blanchard Owner & GM of 72 Degrees

The men from 72 Degrees were prompt, pleasant, and tidy. They did not do a hard sell to persuade me I had to replace my fairly old system. (I stopped using my last AC maintenance company four years ago because its serviceman was so pushy -- and the system has been fine in the interim, despite his dire warnings.) I was so impressed with the professionalism of the men from 72 Degrees that I signed up for a new maintenance contract with the company.

The man that came to do the inspection repeatedly came into the house to update me on what he was finding -- mostly he thought the carbon monoxide levels were sky high and acted as if I should immediately evacuate the house! I had to keep telling him to simply complete the entire evaluation and THEN give me the lowdown. Then he asked me if I understood how dangerous carbon monoxide was. I'm sure he was trying to come across as concerned but it came across as patronizing. After all was said and done, he said the heating unit was too old to service -- that it had rusted parts that he thought were too fragile to check. That pretty much was the last straw. I don't know what he did, really, to justify the cost. The carbon monoxide levels he was detecting were not significantly high and that was with him standing next to the furnace. The levels I got from my carbon monoxide monitor were even less significant when I put in what would have been considered a "hot zone" in the house, the kitchen. UPDATED ON 04/30/2012: Received a call from the owner, Eddie Blanchard, who was concerned about my dissatisfaction with the work. He volunteered to refund my money as he noted I wasn't satisfied with the service. I appreciated his follow through and for offering the best he could after the fact.

Hello Member: We appreciate your ammended response here on Angie's List, though are surprised to see such a low overall rating after your money was refunded upon request. I hope you will seriously consider getting a second opinion on your HVAC issues as the leakage of carbon monixide is dangerous for you and your family. It is often difficult to hear about costly repair needs from a serviceman who has come to your home for maintenance work of any kind (plumbing, electrical, roofing, etc) but the safety of your home is our upmost concern. I wish you the best in consulting others to repair or replace your system, and hope you will give us a call if faced with similar repair suggestions and prices in the near future. I feel like we paid them $80 to come try to sell us a new furnace. Yes our unit is getting older, but it still works just fine. The service man seemed a bit nervous, as though he wasn't being entirely truthful. They took pictures to show us a couple rusty parts... but from our conversations with several other people these parts are typically rusty and do not warrant a new unit unless a leak or other issue develops. We are glad that we know the condition of our unit so that we can keep an eye on it, but did not appreciate the sales pitch.

I'm sorry to hear you were disappointed with the suggestions our serviceman made upon inspection of your unit. When our technicians enter someone's home to perform a tune up and duct cleaning, they are required to do a thorough inspection of each unit to determine if there are any issues that need to be addressed. Many of our competitors do not do this when running similar tune up specials, but we strive to be honest and upfront with all customers so they can plan for future repair or replacement costs when needed. We have a long checklist of items to inspect on every service and maintenance call, and that list serves to protect you as a valued customer. You are correct in stating that it's normal for many HVAC parts to rust a bit with age, but we found larger issues as there were actual holes in your heat exchanger, refrigerant leaking and a very rusty, worn out evaporator coil. I would love to have an opportunity to come and talk with you and your husband personally about all the issues we discovered with your system, and create a convenient plan to repair or replace those parts when needed. I hope you will consider giving us another opportunity to prove why we are rated #1 in customer satisfaction among HVAC companies in this area. Most Sincerely, Eddie Blanchard Owner & GM of 72 Degrees
David I.

I picked this company mainly due to its high-tarted and award from Angie's List as well as the coupon for service. Unfortunately, I am not happy at all with the service call and would not recommend this company. I am not sure why other users rated this company so high. To me, from their office based customer service to the service technician in the field, they are all about up-selling the client with well over-priced goods and services. Use them with caution!
Description of Work: Our AC system needed its yearly tune-up - it was not blowing cold air. Saw the coupon for $49 tune-up on Angies list and bought two (we have 2 AC units). The reviews on Angies List are glowing so I thought it was a no-brainer to give this company a try. So, I Called the company to arrange a service call and they stated they could not get to us for 2 weeks. I thought this was inappropriate that they were offering coupons for service they could not fulfill in a timely manner - I requested a refund to my coupon and would schedule service with another company. I feel it is okay to wait days, but not weeks for a service call. They should not offer coupons for service they do not intend to fulfill in a timely manner - Strike 1. After much resistance on their part they finally conceded to give us an appointment on that Friday afternoon (2 days away) and we agreed. After taking off work to be there for the scheduled service call, they did not show up nor did they call with any explanation. On Monday we called to complain about the missed call and they actually accused us of making up the appointment (claimed it was not in their system). Not very good customer service to accuse your customer of lying! More likely explanation is that their scheduler simply TOLD me they scheduled the service for Friday to "get me out of their hair". - Strike 2 It was not until we told them this situation would lead to a poor rating on Angie's List did they suddenly were able to find an available appointment slot (the next day) at which a service technician actually showed up (the power of Angie's List!). At this appointment, I was further disappointed. As opposed to a service call - I received constant up-selling from the so-called service technician (aka Salesman). "You should buy a start assist for each system" , "You should consider simply replacing the systems - they are old", "Instead of replacing the coils, you should replace the whole system - it will likely be obsolete in a few years" - Strike 3 Next, when I compared their costs for parts (handily provided on the spot by the "service rep" to actual cost online, 72 degrees costs were consistently 2-3x higher than the average prices online. The service was all "up-selling". I do want the service rep to diagnose the system, but rather than simply repair the defects, the call was all about trying to up-sell me for parts, when I challenged them, would not add value for my "old units". - Strike 4

I want to personally apologize for the tune-up appointment we missed on Friday, April 20th. This should never happen to any customer, and is rare as it's only occurred one other time here at 72 Degrees. When the customer called to request an initial tune-up appointment she was told that due to the influx of calls from the coupon and service calls to existing customers we would come on May 1st. This wait is not unusual with any HVAC company when the seasons change and result in many systems breaking down. While we would love to be able to do maintenance calls within a day or two of one's request, that is sometimes not possible as fixing systems which aren't running should be our priority. After the customer called and said she would post a negative response here on Angie's List if we didn't accommodate you sooner, we decided to shift our technician's schedule around as it is always our goal to prevent customers from being disappointed. We decided to send our service manager Chris to your home on April 24th, and upon required inspection of your aging units he found a refrigerant leak. The money we charged was just to fix that leak and clean the systems as requested, and we were glad to get them running efficiently. I hope you will consider using 72 Degrees again if you encounter HVAC issues in the future as you told our office manager Susan you were completely satisfied on her follow-up call. If you have any futher concerns or questions please don't hesitate to call and ask for me so we can ensure a completely positive experience in the future. Thank You! I called 72 Degrees Heating and Air after signing up for the $49 Angies List special service. The person answering the phone was courteous and able to schedule me for the next day. I received calls confirming the visit and notice when the technician was on the way, The technician arrived on time and was professional and courteous. He took a number of readings and inspected the unit as well as checking out the filters and registers. He found a weak capacitor and recommended replacing it which I agreed to. He then thoroughly cleaned the unit vacuuming out debris and cleaning the fins with coil cleaner solution. He recorded various electrical readings and explained to me what they meant. He concluded with a discussion of the maintenance plan that they offered and options.I would use 72 Degree again and recomment them to friends.

We were fortunate to have a technician, Kenneth, perform our service today. Kenneth was extremely knowledgeable, efficient, courteous, and respectful of our property. Kenneth checked and cleaned lines and did a thorough inspection. He patiently answered questions we had about the AC system. I will admit I did not have high expectations due to the ridiculously low price, and I was more than pleased with the service. The service was truly top quality. I see the company's wisdom in offering these "too good to be true" promotions through Angie's List. I already went back online and purchased another coupon for a friend before Kenneth even finished the check-up. I will strongly recommend 72 Degrees Heating & Air Conditioning to friends and family, and they are now my first choice for heating and air conditioning services.
Description of Work: 34-Point A/C System Precision Tune-up & Cleaning + 1 lb of Refrigerant. (My system did not need refrigerant, but it was an attractive part of the Big Deal.)

Based on the rating they got on Angie's List, I decided to go with their firm for our annual service contract. We like to get our systems checked every spring and fall, mostly after we discovered only upon it's sale, that a previous house's systems had a leaky heat exchanger which could have asphyxiated us. Now we get 'em checked twice a year. Anyhow, so we bought the service over the phone and also scheduled the spring checkup. The service person came and throughly checked both systems and also helped me understand better how the humidification system on it worked and also readily answered some questions I had about the power requirements (for possible use of a alternative battery/inverter setup for emergencies). He made some general recommendations and suggested we change out the thermostats from mechanical to digital for better energy maintenance, which I am in the process of doing. (they would do it for me, but he didn't push that, he allowed me to decide if I could do it or not). They also have a catalog of sorts that discusses their auxiliary products and services which he shared with me but only because I had asked him about something specific. I was able to just read it myself, that is...no sales pitch, and decide if I thought any of the services were desired. So, no pressure and yet I could read about things for the units that I might like. He found one unit a bit low on refrigerant, so he recommended we top it off and watch it. He didn't try and sell me a new condenser coil or anything. Very professional and respectful of the customer.
Description of Work: They did a spring check-up of both our HVAC systems in conjunction with a service contract we purchased.

Their serviceman, Chris, came to our house. He did a thorough job in checking the unit out. We knew the furnace was living on borrowed time, as it was 25 years old. Chris stayed a long time and patiently answered my questions after servicing the unit. He also came back to the house, at no charge, to recheck something that I had a concern about. He continued to return my calls and answer any questions about the best unit to install in my home. You could tell that he really cared about doing a good job and customer satisfaction.
Description of Work: We had our furnace given the once over before the winter months.

Eddie and his team are extremely responsive, professional and courteous. After an initial positive experience with 72 Degrees for routine preventative maintenance, we had one minor issue with a sales representative. Because of our prior positive experience, we called the office to discuss it. The response was impressive, with owner Eddie Blanchard calling us and remaining involved throughout the entire process. The installation crew was terrific and the work they did was very high quality. This is a great company with dedicated employees who do excellent work.
Description of Work: Installed new package unit and ERV. Installation included UV bulb, polarization air filter and new thermostat to include both ERV and furnace. Ran new run of duct and installed larger floor grate for increased airflow in one room.

I use 72 degrees on a service contract. During my fall service the technician found an issue. The service technician identified a CO leak was would have been able to replace the required part and did not recommend a new system, but as I had spent money on repairs last year, I suspected system was undersized and it was getting towards the end of its life I decided to investigate getting a new high-end system. The owner came out and performed some calculations for the size required and confirmed the existing unit was too small, and gave me some options for replacments. I went with a highly efficient variable speed model. The installation staff and equipment were both top rate.

I had a faulty HVAC unit in November and chose 72 degrees based on reviews on Angies List. The reviews did mention they were not cheap and i did ask for quotes with other companies but eventually put my faith in the Angies List rating system and chose 72 degrees. I thoroughly documented the exact conditions under which i failed to get heat as the unit did work on some days and not on others. All this information was passed on to 72 degrees so that they knew what to troubleshoot. A technician was sent out and after showing him and actually demonstrating how the unit failed to work (i specifically arranged the tech to come out on a cold day) he determined that the control board was faulty. The quote for the repair was $636.00 and part payment was requested up front. By the way the back of their service paper work states that you do not pay a dime unless you are 100% satisfied with work carried out so this advance request for payment was puzzling to say the least. The repair once the parts were recd was scheduled for Thanksgiving weekend. I give them credit for this as it meant less time to take off from work. The tech turned up punctually (in fact was early which I did not mind) and proceeded to replace the control board and associated ignitor. After working on the unit for over 2 hours and witnessing numerous failed attempts by the tech to get the HVAC working properly i got a bit concerned that things were not going well and i decided to call up the 72 degrees service center to notify them of my concerns. They reassured me he would not leave the house without making sure it would work. About 2.5 hours after first starting to work on the unit, he reported that unit was working and took full payment and left. By this time the temp had gone up significantly enough to make the unit work even if it was not repaired. But knowing the temperature was going to drop to sub zero that night, i knew the real test would be that evening. True enough once the temperatures dropped the unit failed to work and i immediately reported this to 72 degrees. They promised to send the tech out the next day to look at the issue. The same tech came out the following day to look at the issue and this time determined it was a faulty gas valve and the cost for replacing it $636! This left me flabbergasted. There was no way the unit had been repaired, they had already charged me 636 for the first repair AND taken the payment and now for their failed diagnosis i was expected to pay another $636.00. This was simply unacceptable and informed 72 degrees by email (one curious thing about this company, at least i my experience, is they do not seem to like corresponding by email - they only call you) of the turn of events and how disappointed I was by the whole experience. That same evening that i wrote the email, the owner, Eddie Blanchard tried to reach me by telephone to see how he could fix the issue. He left me his phone number to call him back. (This start at an attempt to put things right, together with the actions of his second tech upped my rating of their professionalism from lousy to fair.) Anyway I returned Eddie's call the following day and he promised to send out a new tech to reassess the whole job. One thing he did not address is how they come to this exact same figure of 636 for whatever the type of repair being quoted and whether they were going to insist on charging me for this or not. Given they were making an attempt to right whatever had gone wrong, i accepted the offer and duly took the time off to wait for the new tech on the following day. The new tech came an spent a significant amount of time including simulating a hot day by using a hair dryer to warm up the unit (finally someone who understood exactly what i was reporting). He discovered the unit behaved exactly as i reported and that the control board replacement had not fixed the issue. He also discovered that the faulty part was indeed the gas valve and not the control board. And to finally prove it he put the old control board back and got the furnace working as designed by simulating the warm day. He said he would recommend to Eddie that all the remedial work be carried out without any further charges. He proceeded to replace the gas valve and also replaced the old control baord but unfortunately left the new ignitor in place. So although the unit was working when he left it promptly stopped working as soon as the temperature dropped, though with slightly different symptoms this time. When i called 72 degrees to describe this new behaviour and he immediately realised what he had forgotten to do and turned up that evening to reconnect the old ignitor (which was now with spliced wires due to all the testing they carried out). He did promise thy would replace this ignitor with a new one of equivalent rating but have never heard back from them on this. For now the old one is still working so am not too concerned but do wish they held up their end of promise to replace this part. So maybe i was just unlucky in the service i received as I have seen plenty of good reviews for this company but what really left a sour taste was the attempt by the first tech to get an additional payment for work poorly done in the first place and also whether the amount charged is fair reflection of cost of parts and labour. The owner Eddie though was mostly fair IMO in trying to fix the situation and the second tech really knew his stuff. However my review has to reflect my experience and how much inconvenience it put me through. Many companies when things go wrong not only make attempts to make things right but go one step further to either give you a rebate or some form of discount or a free service or something to make up for their mistakes. I simply never heard back from 72 degrees after this work. What is also a little bit surprising is how their sales and marketing team call you for a review of how satisfied you are with them 1 day after the job is completed. This is not enough time to really test everything so no way you can give a fair review.
Description of Work: I had a fault in my HVAC unit where i would not get heat on cold days but there would be heat on warm days. After one misdiagnosis by a tech on what was faulty another tech from 72 degrees identifies the gas valve as the faulty part and replaced it. Total no of visits including the initial service call was 5.

First, let me apologize again for the multiple trips we made to your home as the problem with your HVAC system was difficult to diagnose. The fact that our skilled technicians rarely misdiagnose system issues doesn't make up for the valuable time it took to find a permanent solution for you! I am happy to hear you were satisfied with our prompt service each time the system broke down, and relayed to our operations manager Susan that the final appointment resolved your issues. Of course we would never collect money from a customer if their HVAC problems weren't fixed properly (not without a refund), and that mistake was quickly corrected. Both the control board and the gas valve are comprable in price, hence the similar quote both times. We were happy to extend a year of free maintenance to you for the inconvenience this caused, and look forward to providing you with professional, top-notch service in the near future. Most Sincerely, Eddie Blanchard Owner & GM of 72 Degrees
