The work was professional and carried out with a minimum of bother, I had mentioned that the shower stall floor was very difficult for me to clean. He and his partner spent extra time cleaning & it came out looking like new it (a tough job)?. as a bonus?! I would have no hesitation in using him again or recommending his services Steve April
Description of Work: Having had many Refit bathroom salesman come to the house and show their wares, with prices ranging from $4-6K and up for just the shower. I looked at my shower which really just needed a good recaulking. I called Jim at STL tile and he quickly came over and gave me an estimate for not only the shower but to recaulk the bathroom floor tiles. (they needed it) I thought the price was very fair. Jim ,I found was excessive about being on time when coming overt ( A Good Thing when comparing to other contractors) He said it would take about two days to complete (He finished in a day and a half) For all intents, I have a new shower stall!! Jim,I found is obsessive when it comes to being at

Jim and his assistant, Tony, did an outstanding job. They arrived on time and finished on time. Their work is top quality and they communicated with me on a regular basis about the work. No surprises. They are also nice, trustworthy guys you don't mind leaving in your house alone if you have to leave for a while. This is the third time I have used Jim. Over the years he has installed travertine floors for me in 5 bathrooms and ceramic tile in our laundry room. I always call Jim because I know he will bid fairly, finish on time, do a quality job, clean up at the end of every day, and keep the dust and mess to a minimum. I recommend him with no reservations and I will call him the next time I need tile installed.

Not only were these men on time and very professional, they also did a great job on the tile. The estimate was accurate and I really liked that it was broken down into parts so that anything we wanted to do ourselves we could do and he would just take it off the bill. The tile looks gorgeous.

Update: I've changed my overall rating from an A to an D for STL Tile Specialist. I'll leave the original review below as we were obviously very happy initially after the install...However, a month or two after install, one of the glass tiles cracked for no apparent reason. I called Jim to take a look. He said he'd call back when he had time. A few months after the initial tile cracked, a 2nd tile cracked. I waited 6 months with no call from Jim. I called him back. He said he'd come take a look. Within a week or two, he came and took a look and called me with the results of his review (i was not home at the time). He said the tiles that cracked were not his fault. He mentioned that walls move and intimated that was the reason or the tiles were bad...well, of course walls move in a home. This home is 15 years old...We had ceramic tile on the same "moving" walls before for 14 years with no issue. As far as the tile, during the selection process, I told him which brand/style of glass tile we planned to purchase online and use and he said he just had installed the same tile (different size) recently and did not suggest there was any issue with the tile brand. Although we never came to a definitive plan, I told him I felt he should replace the broken tiles. He said he'd call back to schedule when time allowed. After another 6 months of waiting with no word from Jim, I called him again. He reiterated, again, that the tile breaking was not his fault and that he was reluctant to replace the tiles for fear of damaging other tiles. Eventually, he said he'd be willing to fix one of the broken tiles (but not both) for good karma... I told him I wasn't interested in him only fixing one of the two broken tiles and thanked him for his time. It's a shame this happened. We paid a lot of money for a job which looked great at first, but now has two very obvious eyesores which take away from the entire kitchen. Jim seemed to be a nice person and knowledgeable. Just wish he would have stood behind his work like a number of other vendors we have worked with in the past have done... As to my original review, if you decide to call STL Tile Specialist, I would be sure to call other tile companies as well and ask each one about the scenario that happened to us...I will not use STL Tile Specialist again... Jim and his assistant, Tony, were fantastic. Jim's bid was not the cheapest, but I think you often get what you pay for and I think his price was more than fair for the quality of work. These guys showed up on time; explained everything being done; cleaned up at days end; and were very professional. I will not hesitate to call Jim at STL TileSpecialist for future tile work and I recommend you make him one of your calls for any tile work. My wife and I were very happy with the job...

Jim and his crew did an excellent job. High quality installation, attention to detail, punctual, friendly. He pointed out potential problem spots BEFORE he started the job and the suggested alternative actions to deal with the issues. The tile floor and backsplash look excellent. Jim was terrific. We had a small job, but he treated it as if were his most important. He was very detailed oriented during the estimate process. He pointed out areas that were going to challenges with our original design and suggested some very simple accommodations that made our finished project look outstanding. Scheduling was quick from our decision to proceed and all work was completed in one day. He even took extra time to explain the important details of installing electrical fixtures around glass tile, which I did myself after the project was done.

We got Jim's name from a local tile store and they recommended him to us as the guy who they use for the tile exhibits in the store. Jim is a perfectionist. His price to do the work was reasonable and the quality of the installation was outstanding. Our kitchen and back rooms of our house look amazing. We could not be more pleased with the results of this project. They were punctual, showed up when they promised, worked full days and kept us apprised of their progress. We would definitely use his services again and would highly recommend him to friends and family. Jim is a really nice guy and we were very comfortable with him in our house. To top it off, Jim loved our dogs and would play fetch with them at the end of the day.

I purchased tile from an Internet website for Jim to install as a tile backsplash in my kitchen. He gave me an estimate over the phone. He arrived at my home on time and with an assistant. He removed the old material and prepped the surface for the backsplash. He installed the tiles meticulously and got them perfectly aligned, which I really appreciated. He returned the next day to grout the tile. He did an excellent job - it looks awesome. I had considered doing this work myself, but I am so glad I hired Jim - there's no way I could have gotten it to look this good! Jim is friendly, professional, and dependable. I would definitely hire him in the future.

We received Jim's name from the store where we picked out our backsplash tile. Because we were using a glass/stone tile, we wanted to make sure we got someone who was not only familiar with this type of tile but also the special grout we chose. Jim called us back right away and based on our measurements was able to give us a quote over the phone. He even offered to pick up the tile from the store once it arrived. From the time we ordered the tile until the time it came in Jim proactively called us twice to check in on the status of the tile as well as working with us to schedule the install date. It was pretty awesome to actually have a contractor proactively contact us versus trying to track them down to complete the work. Jim showed up at the day & time we agreed to and did an amazing job. He made several recommendations during the project which really added to the overall appearance...it was nice to have his input based on his experience. The backsplash came out fantastic, looks great. We would definitely have Jim back to tackle other projects for us in the future. Overall we couldn't be happier. Jim was what every contractor should be...courteous, proactive & punctual. His attention to detail and quality of work really shows in the finished product.

The surface of our entire new granite hallway was uneven on inspection, so uneven that we were uncomfortable inviting guests to our home. It is impossible to enter our home without walking down this long hallway, so we didn't feel that there was a chance that our guests wouldn't notice the problem. One region of our hall was now a fall hazard, the new granite tiles were so uneven. in that area. We felt the only good solution to resolve the problem adequately was to have our new granite hallway pulled up and replacement granite laid, by a different contractor. We felt uncomfortable asking for this, so instead I called him and asked that he pull up and relay only the four most seriously uneven tiles. He said that he would call me back. We have not heard from him and it has been at least five month since he installed our granite.
Description of Work: We purchased granite to replace the marble floor in our entry hall, requiring a 36 inch x 40 foot installation. This tile installer kept stating as he laid our new granite that our hall floor was very uneven. I thought it odd that he kept making this comment, since the original marble floor was perfectly even. I also thought it very odd that he never went back over the floor with a large heavy roller after the granite was laid, to smooth the surface of the granite. He pushed the granite tiles into place with his hands and adjusted the surface with his hands. The surface of our entire new granite hallway was uneven on inspection, so uneven that we were uncomfortable inviting guests to our home. It is impossible to enter our home without walking down this long hallway, so we didn't feel that there was a chance that our guests wouldn't notice the problem. Jim Kelly was really good. He came out and he did a great job. I was really impressed. He made everything look good. I had had a granite hearth built downstairs and the tile was perfectly symmetrical about the shape of the hearth that I had designed up. The hearth had some angles to it and the tile seams were perfectly symmetrical from the left side to the right side and also towards the exterior walls. I was very impressed with the way he did the work. He had an assistant with him to help move heavy objects. He did the project quicker than what he anticipated. It looks great. I am going use him when I do my kitchen floor. He was very enthusiast and outgoing and his work reflected his passion for his work.

Great! Jim gave me an estimate over the phone (because my job was small) and it was exactly what he told me! The job went very well. We had requested other estimates from tile contractors but once they saw the job, they were hesitant about committing to the job. Jim Kelly was honest with us from the beginning indicating that some of the tiles may be damaged in the process but he would do his best to ensure that wouldn t happen. Just to make sure he could accomplish the task without too much damage to the surrounding tile he actually removed one of the 2x2 tiles during the bid process. To make a long story short, he successfully removed all of the 2x2 tiles and replaced them with the new 2x2 tiles without any damage to the surrounding tiles! He was even able to smooth out the back of the new 2x2 tiles so that they would lay flush with the surrounding tiles. He arrived on-time and worked diligently and continuously without a break. He and his assistant cleaned up afterward and were very courteous and considerate and they were extremely tolerant of a very inquisitive dog.
Description of Work: We needed to replace existing 2x2 tile inserts in a kitchen with new 2x2 tile inserts without damaging the surrounding 4x4 tiles. Replacing the 2x2 tile insert consisted of drilling out the old tile and replacing them with the new inserts. We also needed to have some of the 4x4 tiles replaced as they were damaged when a new kitchen countertop was installed. We had a limited number of replacement tiles as those tiles are no longer manufactured....so accuracy and precision were very important.

I couldn't be happier. We had some travertine tiles left over from a remodel a year ago. I asked Jim to take a look at the various sized pieces and tell me if we could stretch it to cover 2 other bathrooms. He was able to come up with 2 different patterns to make it work and the result is beautiful. It took 5 days from start to finish. He reinstalled all the fixtures without a glitch and the floor is perfect.

We got 3 bids on this project (all referred from Angie's List). Jim's price was the middle. He returned our phone calls. The area around the fireplace was uneven in spots and had to be built up (all three bidders told us this) so that is why he had to charge more. Otherwise, it would have been a simple, one day job. Jim was prompt, arriving when he said he would, cleaned up his work area at the end of the day. I would use him for future projects.
