Description of Work: They first did a heat survey to determine where heat loss was occurring in the house. This showed most heat loss was through the attic. They surveyed the area and came up with a bid to up the insulation to current recommended levels. They did give a $250 discount to Angie's List customers. They first caulked all the various lines and holes in the attic. They then added insulation to bring the R factor up to current standards. In addition they caulked and insulated around a bay window from below.

He took thermal pictures, checked all doors and windows, and pointed out areas of typical heat loss in the house. He was very informative and thorough. Later that week, I received an email with detailed energy loss information, recommendations for fixing problems, and information about a whole-house seal and filter system. I did not choose the whole-house seal and filter system, but I have used most of the suggestions to lessen heat loss in the house.

+ -1 moreWe had them come out and do a full home energy audit Scheduling went well and was conducted over email (very convienient) The technician showed up promptly and went through the following 1) He inspected the attic insulation and venting 2) He attached a blower system to the front door and sucked the air out of the house to identify any air leaks 3) He used a thermal camera to identify cold air leaks and locations of poor insulation 4) He evaluated our gas lines for leaks Once complete he reviewed the results of his findings, identified several trouble spots and provided a printed assesment with areas of opportunitty, some of the items brought up Lack of insulation in some of our attic areas and not enough venting - The estimate to handle the insulation and venting was in line with past quotes we have recieved. (We elected to not pursue at that time). He identified some very leaky basement windows which we corrected on our own as well as some items to correct like poor insulation around our water heater. (also we corrected on our own). Also found a slight gas leak which due to its location would be fairly costly to address. While we decided not to address any of the more expensive recomendations, we felt the energy audit was money well spent.
Description of Work: Home Energy Audit (One of the services offered through an Angies List special). This consists of air leakage testing, thermal camera evaluation and insulation review.

+ 0 more.Overall things went very well. SmartHouse was quick to come to our house to perform the audit, emailed us the audit report within 3 days, and was able to start the work within a week. I'm not sure how competitive their prices were compared to others as we didn't compare. The $99.00 Angies List Audit was a great value, but I understand that that was so they could then get to offer us the recommendations and hopefully get the work to do. Overall I was very satisfied with their work and would recommend them. If cost/value is a big issue you might want to do some comparision shopping.
Description of Work: SmartHouse came in and performed an energy audit on out mid 1970's vintage home which had not been updated to improve energy conservation. We moved in a year ago and after living in it thru the hot summer and cold winter decided that we needed to upgrade. The audit included climbing and inspecting in the attic and in a crawl space. They also used infrared sensor for heat loss and a fan in the front door to detect air leakage. They then sent me a detailed report with a list of recommendations and the cost of each of those recommendations. I then said I thought the cost was a bit high and if I did most of the recommendations at one time could they lower the price. They lowered the price about 5-7%. Over 3 days they added insulation in the attice, sealed under a crawl space, sealed up a whole house fan, sealed the attic, sealed ductwork in the attic, ducted 4 bathroom exhausts to the outside instead of just into the attic, and sealed up some large foundation air leaks. They were neat and clean and professional. I did not go out for competing bids on the work. Perhaps if I had I could have had the work done for less. They were able to do the work the week following the audit. So it was convenient and with winter coming on I wanted to get the work completed quickly. It been 1 week since they completed their work and we can tell the difference. The furnace is running less and the house feels warmer and less drafty. So I am happy with the results.

+ 0 moreOur experience with Smarthouse was very positive. We had good communication with Joe Page and the office throughout the process. A questionnaire sent to us before the inspection helped us to convey our particular needs and concerns ahead of time to Mr. Page. He did a thorough survey of the house to determine where there was air leakage and a report was given to us immediately which prioritized suggested remedies and included prices for services that were available directly from Smarthouse. We chose to do the top three items which included attic sealing and blown in insulation. The workmen were on time and completed the work in a day. The work was done efficiently with little disturbance to us and the clean up was well done. After the work was completed, the staff tested the house again to insure safety, particularly that the more tightly sealed house still had good ventilation for the furnace and gas heater. Throughout the process, explanations about the tests, results and recommendations were clear. Our questions were answered completely and we never felt rushed.
Description of Work: Energy audit of the house: After we purchased the audit service through Angie's List, we were sent a questionnaire by e-mail to establish what our main concerns were for the house. The representative from SmartHouse came and tested the house for air leakage, heat loss, and proper ventilation for the furnace and water heater (finding a small gas leak in the process). He then made a prioritized list of suggested remedies, including prices for services they provide directly. Attic sealing to stop air loss: The first step was to have all of the cracks that allowed air infiltration from the living space into the attic sealed to prevent the loss of warm air in winter, and cold air in summer. This was done using an expanding foam sealant and in some areas a flexible backer was used for larger gaps. Replacement of ventilation fan in bathroom: The second step was to replace a failing bathroom exhaust fan with a new model, including new ventilation duct work and replacement of the thin flexible plastic tube with rigid, insulated tubing cut to fit. Blown in attic insulation: After putting baffles against the underside of the roof at the edges of the attic, insulation was blown in to raise the R-value of the attic from about R-6 to R-49.

They did look around, however, to see if there as anything else they could do for me and I pointed out two things that needed done. They said they would send me a bid for the items I pointed out. I am waiting to get the bid and a few others before I make my final decision, but they did leave me with a good impression. They were very respectful of me and my property, and they were very knowledgable and very nice.

In my experience this is a rare, though refreshing view. He provided information/ education void of sales pressure or judegement. Overall a much better experience than expected.

He then provided us with a detailed written report of his findings and estimates to make any repairs that would increase the energy efficiency of our home. I found that the price of the audit was very reasonable, but the prices for the proposed repairs seemed high. We did not have them perform any of the suggested repairs.

I eventually did call them back to have them install the installation - they were very efficient, though did leave dirty hand smudges when replacing the attic door that they did not clean after themselves.

+ -1 moreWe purchased a Big Deal from Angie's List for a Home Energy Audit. We knew we had a few trouble spots, but wanted to get an overall picture to identify any unknowns. The woman scheduling the appointments was very prompt and flexible in finding a working time. The gentleman who did our Home Energy Audit was prompt, very knowledgeable, explained everything he did as he was doing it. The audit took 3-4 hours, and was very thorough. He provided a great summary upon completion of the audit, and reviewed each individual issue and cost to resolve. Some resolutions had options - base fix (lower cost) to better fix (higher cost) - he explained the benefits of each to allow us to make better decisions. He also helped us identify number of years needed to get a return on our investment - some items were very short, others many years. Ultimately, we decided not to have any work done at this time, but when we do, I would definitely contact them in the future for service.
Description of Work: The gentleman from Home Energy Audit performed a leak test, where they put a fan in an exterior doorway with the remainder of the home closed and check for leaks (you want a certain percent, but more is energy loss). He inspected both our attic and crawl space for insulation, venting, etc. and provided recommendations to better insulate and vent our house for heating/cooling cost savings, and more even air temperature inside. He inspected our basement for drafts along the foundation. Each recommendation was called out separately, and options to fix were priced separately, so you could choose any combination. He also gave recommendations on what to do if we planned on staying long term, if we planned on staying short term, and if we planned on doing any additions to our house. Overall a great experience and very informative.

I have purchased several deals from Angie's list and this is the first time that a company was actually proactive in offering to schedule the work to be performed. I did not have to call to schedule and the entire service appointment process was handled via email. The installer arrived on time and was professional and capable. I ended up purchasing additional services. I highly recommend these folks.

+ -1 moreThe energy audit went fine. I only paid $49 for the audit, thermal scan and a $250 credit toward future work completed. I did not go with this company to complete the insulation on my home but went with another company instead. The reasons for this were: They were more expensive on their bid. Enough that the $250 credit would not have made a difference. The auditor/salesman they sent to my home did not ask enough of the right questions, or explain enough in depth to a laymen such as myself and did not appear as knowledgeable as other contractors that came out to my home and submitted bids. Although they appeared familiar with Ameren Illinois incentives, they were not familiar enough to share with me that the incentives would be cut in half on 15 December. Furthermore, if they were really familiar with their product, customer location and incentives, they might have told me that since I am residing in Illinois and an Ameren Illinois customer that Ameren Illinois would provide a home energy audit for free. I had to find that out on my own after the audit through the Ameren Illinois website. But if they would have shared that with me than they would have lost out on making money through the home energy audit with a possibility of more work after the audit. Once again it comes back to always doing the right thing because karma is always at work. Do the right thing by the customer and the money and business will come.
Description of Work: Home Energy Audit with Thermal Scan inside the home. Set up the door fan and tested the cfm's in my home and walked around with a thermal scanner to see where the cold air leaks were.

Then walked through the house to detect cold spots using thermal imaging and set up his fan in the front door to do testing. Whole thing took about an hour and later that afternoon Joe emailed me a prioritized list of things that could be done to seal the house better. Got exactly the info I wanted. Have yet to have services performed due to other circumstances.
