We got several estimates from different companies. Mr. Mirelli seemed to be the most honest. While one other tuckpointing company tried to scare us into tuckpointing our entire house, Mr. Mirelli suggested just starting with the front porch. He said we could eventually do one side of the house at a time and that the other sides of the house could hold off for some time. The front porch was the worst so that is what we had him fix. We had to wait a few weeks before the work could be done because they were busy but that was okay. They arrived within the scheduled time frame. The workers were polite and friendly. The work seemed well done. The mortar match was good. We did have to call Mr. Mirelli a few days later for a few missed spots and an issue with the seal on the steps. He was very responsive and took care of our concerns.
Description of Work: Spotpointed the front porch walls and stone ledges. Sealed the porch steps with limestone color caulking. Spotpointed the front wall block around the downspouts and a few spots in the middle of the wall.

They are redoing the mortar on the chimney to prevent leaks. I was pleased to find them on Angie's List. They are going to grind down bricks and tuckpoint the roofline. They are replacing 8 bricks. Compared to the other people, the price was fair.

John came to my home, and did a very thorough investigation of what the job may entail. He came back to speak with me personally, and signed a contract with me that day. The work performed was timely, and excellent. It exceeded my expectations, and I made extra effort to keep his Trademark sign displayed on my front lawn.

I emailed for an estimate-didn't hear anything for some time. I called. Mr. Mirelli didn't recall getting the email. He took my info over the phone & told me he would get out & do an estimate by the end of the week. There was an estimate in my mailbox the very next day. I don't know anything about tuckpointing so I had no idea what to expect. I was glad that they were able to replace the sealer on the driveway and I hadn't even noticed the cracks that they found until I saw they were in the estimate. I signed the estimate & returned it a couple of weeks later. The office called very soon after I returned the estimate & scheduled me for 8 am the very next morning. I would have liked Mr. Mirelli (or someone who appeared to be in charge of something) to have shown up with the crew. I think they could have been neater with the morter (me being picky?), they were clean and quick. I called Mr. Mirelli to inspect the work, he called me back & said they did everything he wanted them to do.
Description of Work: I called for an estimate on tuckpointing. Estimate included replacing the sealer on the driveway, where it meets the house, plus repairing a few cracks in the foundation wall (outside). All work completed. A LOT more tuckpointing was done than I had expected. The disclaimer on this is that I know nothing about tuckpointing.

I turned to Angie's List after getting very high bids to re-grout/tuck point my front walk made of bluestone. I called the BBB to inquire about one company and learned they had 36 complaints against them. I used Mirelli because your ratings were top notch, and they are well deserved. Their bid was fair, delivered in a timely way. They did the work beautifully, on time, and were very honorable. They didn't flinch when I produced their 5% off coupon from your advertisements, and honored it immediately. They are a company that shows up when they say they will, does what they say they'll do, and follows through with all parts of a job before collecting. I am now devoted to Mirelli Tuckpointing and to Angie's List. Thank you for steering me the right way.
Description of Work: Mirelli removed the blue stone from my front walk, entirely preserving it, and re-cemented it, creating smooth grout lines.

I thought the prices seemed astronomically high, so I checked 4 more companies. Two did not call me back as promised, the other two quotes were for $4000 and $6000 to tuckpoint one entire building (vs. $30,000!!!). Yikes, it's hard to believe anyone would pay 500-750% more for the same job, regardless of quality level differences! I ended up having both buildings spot-tuckpointed for $350 and plan to hire the $4000 contractor (whom has done good work for me in the past) to tuckpoint the entire building next Spring.
Description of Work: I called & told them I needed some spot-tuckpointing done at 2 buildings. They looked at the buildings and quoted $30,000 to completely tuckpoint a brick, 4-family in South City and $2000 to spot-tuckpoint the front of another 4-family across the street.

IT IS VERY HARD TO BELIEVE THAT ANY COMPANY COULD SPOTPOINT TWO, FOUR FAMILY FLATS FOR $350.00, UNLESS THEY DO NOT HAVE INSURANCE, WORKERS COMP, UNEMPLOYMENT INSURANCE, OR PAY THEIR TAXES. IT'S ALSO HARD TO BELIEVE THAT ANY REPUTABLE COMPANY COULD TUCKPOINT A BUILDING THAT LARGE AND SOLID FOR $4,000.00. IF THEY ARE PAYING TAXES, INSURANCE, ETC., THEY WOULD HAVE TO PAY YOU TO DO YOUR JOB. WHEN IT COMES TO THE TUCKPOINTING ON YOUR HOME, QUALITY LEVEL DOES MAKE A BIG DIFFERENCE.

It went VERY well. John Mirelli was on top of the job at all times. He called to let me know that when they were going to tuck point the stone foundation that the grout in that section of the house was really solid and that they recommended not to re-tuck point it but to just spot tuck point (he gave me a price decrease for this from the contract). He was also able to match the ribbon style grout that was original to the house. There was only one section of the house that they forgot to do the special finish on and John had his crew out there to fix it the next morning at 8 am. By the way, the crew was very prompt and showed up every morning at 8 am on the money. They did a great job of clean up every night. This by nature is a very dusty messy process. I was surprised as to how much dust came into the house. Not any fault to Mirelli but just as a heads up to future homeowners receiving this service. As well as a lot of foliage in the garden was coated with dust.
Description of Work: My two story all brick house with stone foundation was tuck pointed on all sides. This included the chimney and a front porch.

One of the workmen made a racial slur at me. I called John Mirelli, the owner, and he bullied me on the telephone. I asked him to come out and look at the quality of his work. He agreed that it was a poor job, apologized for his worker's racial slur, and told me he was already fired. He agreed and offered to repair the chimney mess for an additional $1300. I told him that I would have to check that out. I called Angie's List and got the name of three other chimney repairmen. They were too busy to come out. I called John again. When I told him I called Angie's List and the BBB, he blew up. I told him that I did not recognize the John Mirelli whom I had done business with before. He explained he would be receiving the BBB award the next day and didn't want me to call them. After much more bullying, he offered to send his best chimney repairman to come out and fix the chimney at no additional cost. I will never recommend him again.
Description of Work: They did tuckpointing around the brick of my house and the chimney. I had such a good experience with them years ago that I only got their estimate. He sent a crew which had 2 brand new people. The owner did not show up. The bricks on the chimney were totally out of line and the chimney looked awful.

I APOLOGIZE FOR THE NEW EMPLOYEES BEHAVIOR. YOU SAID HE MADE A COMMENT ABOUT THE NEIGHBORHOOD. I TOOK THE SITUATION VERY SERIOUSLY AND FIRED HIM THAT DAY. HE DEFINITELY DID NOT FIT OUR COMPANY. I ALSO GAVE YOU AN ADDITIONAL 10% OFF BECAUSE OF THE SITUATION. I AM VERY SORRY IF YOU FELT THAT I BULLIED YOU OVER THE PHONE. SURELY THAT WAS NOT MY INTENTION, AND I'M SORRY IF YOU FELT I CAME ACROSS THAT WAY. WHEN I CAME TO GIVE YOU AN ESTIMATE ON THE CHIMNEY, I TOLD YOU THAT I FELT IT NEEDED TO BE REBUILT AND IT WOULD COST $1,300.00. YOU SAID YOU WERE ON A FIXED INCOME AND JUST WANTED TO TUCKPOINT IT. I PRICED IT BOTH WAYS, AND YOU CHOSE TO JUST TUCKPOINT IT. THATS WHY YOU WERE UNHAPPY WITH THE RESULT AND IT WAS UNEVEN. WE REBUILT THE CHIMNEY TO KEEP YOU HAPPY AT OUR OWN EXPENSE. SINCERLY, JOHN MIRELLI

My recommendation is that John Mirelli is a great, honest, professional and forth right guy. Does an excellent job for the price is reasonable. I will hire and recommend his company to my friends & family. John's four workers were excellent, office stage, very polite, & very professional. Keep up the good work.

Mirelli was great! We called, and he came by the next day while we were at work and left an estimate at our doorstep that came out well below what we were expecting. John Mirelli showed up for all appointments on time and prepared. He gave me an honest assessment of the job--he even told me the basement was in good enough shape that it didn't have to be tuckpointed (it was structurally sound and wasn't falling down). However, I was planning on painting the brick walls and I wanted everything to be prepped properly. He assigned an appropriate number of workers for the size of the job. All of his employees were hard working, polite, and very experienced. They used the appropriate cement mix (for a >100 year old house) and the color matched well with the original cement. His foreman (20 years experience tuckpointing) was present and supervised the entire job. I asked them to fill a few small holes in the floor with any extra cement which they did without hesitation. The crew cleaned up at the end of every day. He remained true to his original bid. Overall this was a fantastic experience! Mirelli tuckpointing deserved the Page of Happiness!

I was told that they would put down plywood to protect the roof. When I inspected the work, they only had tarps down. This was a 50' chimney so when they dropped the bricks, the tarps did nothing to stop the brick from damaging the roof. They really tore up the roof and metal cap around the edge.

WHEN WE DID THE BID FOR TAKING DOWN THIS 50' CHIMNEY, WE HAD NO WAY TO SEE INSIDE TO TELL WE WOULD BE DEALING WITH 3 LAYERS, ONE OF WHICH WAS HEAVY CINDER BLOCK. WHEN WE STARTED TO TAKE IT DOWN AND FOUND THIS OUT, WE DECIDED SINCE YOU ARE A REPEAT CUSTOMER THAT WE WOULD NOT RAISE THE COST AND HONOR OUR PROPOSAL FOR YOU. WE SHOULD HAVE, HOWEVER, WRITTEN A CLAUSE INTO THE PROPOSAL THAT SAID WE COULD NOT BE RESPONSIBLE FOR ANY UNFORESEEN DAMAGES THAT COULD OCCUR WHEN REMOVING AN INDUSTRIAL SIZE CHIMNEY WITH 3 LAYERS. WE DID HAVE PLYWOOD UNDER THE TARPS AROUND THE CHIMNEY, BUT NOT ALL THE WAY TO THE EDGE OF THE ROOF. IT WAS UNAVOIDABLE THAT A COUPLE CINDER BLOCKS FELL AS WE TOOK APART THE LAYERS. I ALSO THINK IT IS FAIR TO MENTION THAT WE PAID $1,000.00 TO COVER THE COST OF REPAIRING THE ROOF AND THE METAL EDGE.
