On a positive note, the workers who came did very good work, and came back to fix things when there were problems. So the quality of their work was good. Chad, in particular, was very nice and friendly. However, I would not recommend them or use them again because the communication with Mike Svenson was so bad. He did not answer his e-mails quickly, to say the least, and he took forever to return calls. THREE TIMES he cancelled on me to look at flooring/deck issues that I was considering hiring him for, but he claimed each time he was "sick." Really? I told him last fall that I wanted work done on my deck, and then he said, "Great, let's do it in the spring." A couple weeks ago, Mike tells me they are "totally booked" and he's not able to get my project done. I am VERY, VERY frustrated with this company and do not recommend them TO ANYONE.
Description of Work: I hired the provider for some basic handyman chores: repair on basement steps, installing ceiling fans, new lighting in master bathroom, and checking out our heat vents. I wanted to hire them for more, but the communication was terrible: Mike took forever to return calls and answer e-mails.

I find your review to be unfair and your description of events to be inaccurate. Regarding the staining of the deck. This is an exterior wood structure that was never dry enough to stain last fall or this spring. When you asked to be out on the schedule I told you that we could not schedule until the deck has a chance to dry out. It may be ready in late April, May, it might even be June before that deck could be done. It is often very rainy in the spring and no one knows when this project can be scheduled. It snowed yesterday. You hired us last fall for a four hour work order. We completed several things for you. You requested us to return to touch up painting around the light fixture that we installed. We were asked to install a light fixture... Not to paint. We did it anyway at no charge (I did it myself). This spring you called on a Monday for a problem with the ceiling fan that we installed for you. You said that there was a problem with a wire. I called back the same day and one of our crew was out the next day. You made it sound like a warranty issue... It turned out that you just pulled the chain too hard and destroyed the switch. Calling us on Monday resulted in a repair the next day.. Maybe an F in responsiveness is undeserved. If we are so terrible to work with why do you keep trying to hire us? We are an Angie's list service award winner (top 5%) so I guess we are doing something right.

I got a call from the general manager indicating the guys were on their way. They arrived at about 9:30ish, which was a half hour later than the manager said they would be. I was somewhat confused, because they were only here until 11:30. I had two additional projects I had requested they do (hang a canvas over the sofa and additional floating shelving in the spare bedroom). They completed neither task. Initially I thought I had made a mistake and only booked them for two hours. However, looking now at my order, I was supposed to get 4 hours for $175. They were coming from North St. Paul, which would only account for a max of 15-20 minutes travel time. The quality and workmanship was great, but I won't hire again or recommend them given that there was either a miscommunication about my order or expectations. Does two men only mean half the time? I only requested one, and these were jobs that only required one. Hence, the work was not completed.
Description of Work: I hired Spartan to do some odd jobs around the house, which included hanging shelves, pictures, blinds, coat rack, and a range hood install.

I am sorry that you are disappointed wit our efforts on your projects. You purchased four labor hours and I sent 2 guys because a couple of items on your list typically require 2 people. We were 1/2 hour late. Sometimes the project that is scheduled before will take a little longer to complete. I think this is common for other service providers as well. I think that an F for punctuality is undeserved. In four labor hours we Installed a range hood, blinds, coat rack hook, shelving, and a large picture. I think that we completed a fair amount of work for a 4 hour work order. Thank you. Mike

Repairing the hole in the ceiling was complicated by the non standard construction done by the home builder. It took a fair amount of effort and skill to install the drywall patch. It turned out perfect. You would never know where the patch was made. The door and window trim was done professionally and looks great. I am delighted.

Our laundry room has been very dysfunctional since the house was built. Our goal was to make it nicer and increase its functionality. We had a designer draw up an improved design that included removing an existing wall cabinet, a sink and a countertop. The design included the stacking of our front-loading washer and dryer, removal of existing cabinetry and countertop and installing a new sink base, countertop, sink and faucet. It also included the installation of a 90 inch high 36 inch wide cabinet and a countertop for folding clothes. In the process we were able to re-purpose the old countertop and wire shelving that includes clothes hanging capabilities. Initially, I had not made the determination as to the nature of the new countertop materials (certainly did not want to use the existing countertop material). I decided to use tile that was left over from the backsplash in our kitchen as the new countertop material. The result was great! Functional and greatly enhanced look.

I contacted Mike about coming over for an estimate. He came over within the next couple of days and walked around with me, pointing out the different options. I decided to go with Mike and his crew. They were wonderful to work with. Paul came over and started taking care of everything. Because of the holidays, they were really busy, so getting into the schedule took some time, but once I was added to their calendar, no problems. Paul was wonderful to have in the house. He was great to have in my house and was great with my inquisitive children. I would most definately hire them again!
Description of Work: Handyman services: installing new vanity, mirror and light fixture in one bathroom, light fixture and mirror in 2nd bathroom, fixing misc. drawers, fixed leaky facet in kitchen, fixed closet doors, replaced banisters (2) on deck, replaced interior door which required cutting and staining.

Mike the general contractor was very responsive and professional. Took time on the phone to discuss his business and their process despite it being a small project. Chad was the rep on the job and was outstanding. Again it was a small job, and was about 15 degrees out, but he seemed happy to do the work and took time to explain what he did and why it came off in the first place. He made the cracked siding look as good as new. Will contact again in the future for more projects. Highly recommend. Thanks guys!

It went better than I could've hoped. Mike (owner, not the painter) admits that he had an autumn season which was very very busy and he would benefit from more office-support re details of setting appointments. A few glitches there did not take away from the value we got.

I changed plans for the work scheduled at the last minute due to the weather primarily. Provider had no issues with the tasks requested and had no problem tackling and completing the requested task. I believe the task took less then the alloted four hours paid for but due to circumstances that were unavoidable, and the fact that I forgot to mention another small task after the primary task was completed, I released the provider when he finished the primary task, which I believe was approximately two hours into the FOUR hours time alloted and paid for of the provider. The provider was competent and I would consider hiring this provider in the future. To Date: Requested provider to return to complete alloted paid for but wasn't completed due to unforseeable circumstances but received no response. Assumption is that the answer to my request is -NO. I will have to look up past handymen that have offered to go above and beyond similar circumstances occurred and when asked and needed in future.
Description of Work: Provider arrived and assessed job requested. Promptly began work with little direction until completion.

I signed up for 8 hours of painting for $199. The guy came on time and I let him know what I wanted painted. The priority was the back of the garage (1.5 car, 1 story), which I couldn't do myself. It was the top half and the trim that I could reach. I said if he had time to move on to paint the trim on other parts of the garage and house. He finished up with the back of the garage well before the 8 hours (I think it was 6-6.5 hours) and called it a day. The paint job was good, but I wished he had worked on the other stuff I pointed out too. I'm pretty sure he had time. I ended up doing the rest myself.

Paul and Chad showed up on time. They inspected the bump-out and said that they thought it was tight and not a place where rodents could enter the basement. They then took time to inspect other areas for possible entry points and didn't find any. The moulding was installed in a basement closet and instead of trying to fix the entry door they decided that the best way to handle it was to replace the door. They did a great job of moulding installation and installing the service door. The service door fits better and is more sturdy than the day we moved into the house 27 years ago. Everything was cleaned up nicely. Paul and Chad were really efficient in their work and were really nice guys who did their job very professionally. I will not hesitate to call Spartan the next time I have a repair job.
Description of Work: original quote was to open up and check a bump-out for possible places where rodents could enter, fix a garage service door, and install some moulding.
My 1st floor 1/2 bath hadn't been updated in at least 20 years and the fixtures were well over 30 years old. The toilet had started to leak and all of a sudden it was an eek moment? this room was nasty. On day one, the installer Mark removed the old fixtures and carted them away. He pulled up the old vinyl flooring and removed the patch of plywood that had been installed 20+ years ago when the vinyl was installed. We put a fan on it overnight so the subfloor could dry out which also gave me a chance to prime the wall before the fixtures were reinstalled. Day two saw the install of a new plywood patch on the floor, a plywood underlayment and the install of the new vinyl tiles. The tiles I picked are thick, heavy snap together tiles so they went in relatively quickly. Because the water connections for the bathroom were so old, new valves needed to be installed, etc. The plumber was called in on day one and he finished up the connections on day two, (this was a separate job from the work Spartan did). The bath isn't tiny but both the fixtures are on the same wall so Mark did a dry fit of the new fixtures to be sure everything fit. Before day three of the project, I took the opportunity to paint the room. Day three saw the install of the fixtures, and the addition of additional molding to complete the room. Everything looks wonderful and I am very happy with the professionalism of Mike's installer Mark. I am a happy camper!

Mike was very polite and professional, but he could do better with scheduling and communication, and write more specific contracts. Since I knew he was probably busy in the summer months, I tried to be patient and allow leeway in time, but I often had to call him for responses. From the first time I called until the day they started it was 7 weeks. I was in a hurry to get the work done, and if I had known that it would be 7 weeks, I would probably would have gone on to someone else, as we had 2 other contractors waiting for this to be done before they could do anything. When he came for the first time, he gave what I thought was an estimate. I called back to say that we wanted him to do the work, then he came out again, for the actual estimate. So we thought well ok, lets just get this done. A little more time went by, and when I called and said that we have 2 other contractors waiting, he said that he would make time in the schedule. Also, the estimate was fairly vague; even though when walking through, I specified a lot of details about what I wanted. With the details not in writing, it was impossible to say what was ?extra? after the fact, especially since a different person came out to do the actual work.
Description of Work: Replaced some cedar siding pieces (~200 feet), and some trim boards.
The people I worked with at Spartan Inc. did a great job. I am very happy with the quality of service I received and the amount of things that they got done while they were here. They worked on a variety of tasks including plumbing repairs. One of the things I asked them to fix was a leak in my bathtub's overflow drain. While they were working on that, they noticed that the main bathtub drain was corroded too, and that it would start to leak soon. They suggested that I replace that too while they were here to avoid a future repair. They included this as part of the work I had already paid for, and only charged me for the part. They also made sure that the new parts they installed were the same style as the rest of my bathroom's hardware, which I really appreciated. I plan to hire them again to work on several additional projects including installing recessed lighting in my living room and finishing off my basement. I look forward to working with them again in the future!
Description of Work: a) Fix / replace leaking overflow drain in bathtub b) Fix / replace outdoor hose faucet c) Nail down loose/raised hardwood floor panels in living room d) Fix loose floor trim separator between hallway and bedroom e) Adjust cabinet door in bedroom under sink so it shuts properly f) Look at guest bedroom window to see why it won?t shut easily. g) Make sure the ceiling fan in the bedroom won?t fall (wobbles)

Overall I had a great experience with them, their painter was very good at what he does and was able to quickly setup and paint our space. He also did an excellent job repairing a bad mudding and taping job above my bay window which had been an eye sore ever since we moved in. he came in under budget and completed faster than we expected. The only thing I couldn't give them full marks on was communication, emails and phone calls took a while to be returned and I was sometimes unsure if we were going to get the project started. I think perhaps they received a bigger response to thier first Angies List "big deal" than they expected and weren't ready for the number of new customers they had to deal with. But (in my mind) the biggest thing I'm taking away from my experience is the quality of the work done, and the price paid, and both were excellent, I'm very happy with the work done and it was for less than I expected.
Description of Work: Painted my split level entry way, repaired wall above bay window in living room (poor mudding and taping by previous owner) and painted living room and into dining room.

Paul that came out was da bomb! Nicest guy ever and knew how to do about everything. We needed some parts so we went over to Menards to get them. It was like hanging out with your buddy who came over to help you with stuff. Don't even hesitate to contact Mark to have him send someone out. It feels so good getting all of these things done at home!!!!
Description of Work: Hung hooks for bikes in garage, hung large wood wall hanging high above staircase, hung mirror, repaired interior door that constantly swung open on its own, retrieved something off a very high ledge that had been there bugging me for months.
