The work done was incredible. Repaired - problems that weren't even noticed in the quote. Turned our almost destroyed hardwood floors and made them look brand new. Work began less than a week after the quote and finished in 2 weeks. Very meticulous worker and very kind.

Very well. We heard from Jerry the same day we called and he even came to our home that same day for a quote. He started the job the day we agreed on and was completed within the time frame we anticipated. We really liked the fact that he did the work himself. He clearly takes pride in his work and we love the results. We highly recommend him

They did a great job and I liked everything. The workmanship was perfect. The workers were great and I had no problems. I would recommend them.

"Thank you. Glad to hear my Floorwright workmanship and ShadeMaker products are holding up. Now that they look "perfect," let's put off that next sanding forever with a clean and (almost) painless maintenance schedule."

The floors are gorgeous. Jerry is meticulous and takes great pride in his work. The materials he uses are not noxious. We were quite impressed that there was basically no dust anywhere after the sanding and very little odor after the sealing and finishing. And we were able to live in the house each night during the process, although our dog had to be boarded the last few days. We have already recommended Shademaker to two of our friends and would not hesitate to recommend him to anyone.

From the time of the estimate we were clearly informed of options and what to expect. We were not pressured in any way, but were given expert advice when we asked for it. The work was completed just as scheduled, and he was very easy to work with throughout -- experienced, realistic, and with a good sense of humor. He obviously takes pride in his work and enjoys doing a good job -- which he did. The floor is beautiful! Beyond our expectations -- though at the same time exactly as we hoped or imagined. Fine details were attended to, and no damage was done to adjacent woodwork or other parts of the house. Besides that, there was no more dust in the house than would be expected after a week or two away. This too was amazing to us! We have no complaints at all, and great confidence both in the service and integrity offered by this company, and in recommending it to others. We are glad we went ahead with this project (and this company) -- clearly much value has been added to the beauty and durability of our home.

Once installed(2/17), the floors looked very nice. The finish application was almost flawless. The only concern was that the wood appears as a 2nd grade or lower, rather than select or better, as was quoted and invoiced. The wood is also suspicious for being softer than “hard maple” since it is scratching MUCH easier than the original Maple in the kitchen. Jerry never offered us the original invoice from Northwoods Mill. Something went terribly wrong with the additional coat put on by Jerry. It has bubbles, bumps, drips, ridges, all over the entire project. This additional layer is incredibly slippery, which is a quality I specifically wanted to avoid since our dog has hip dysplasia which is made worse on poor footing. Also, animals don’t walk on their nails unless they feel like they need more traction (ie a slippery surface), so the risk of more scratches is much greater. The desire for a non-slip surface was communicated to Jerry a couple of times, particularly after we inspected a job he did at Bethlehem Church in MPLS. I commented that I liked the surface there and why. Jeff also reminded Jerry of our desire to sacrifice shiny floors in order to have a non-slip surface. We have had to cover the floors with rugs and carpet tiles because it is so slippery. Jerry ruined the project by putting this layer on. He either applied it very poorly, or he used a damaged/altered product, or it is intended to be applied by more than one person, since it dries so fast. When confronted with this problem, Jerry tried to point the blame on the neighbor. His solution was to quote me for $1500 more, higher quote if he had to do any prep work. This quote is to reapply the ceramic layer and finish layer, the only way to regain a non-slip surface. He said he would correct the flaws in application, but only where it would not be covered by rugs, and that there would be noticeable difference in appearance where these flaws would be fixed, but that difference will decrease with foot traffic over time. Jerry has had another chance. The owner of the company that makes WearMax has offered to supply the finishing materials at no charge. This offer came after the owner inspected our floors and agreed that the additional layer was poorly applied, and so thick that he questioned if it was his product. Jerry has amended his estimate to $1336. Jerry proved difficult, in a passive aggressive, quiet, metered manner. This difficulty was felt by not only myself, but my husband, Jeff, and Excel flooring. Jerry did not communicate to me what to expect, what the risks were, and why the extra layer would be potentially helpful, even after repeated, clear, concise inquiries on my part. Jerry has denied being informed of our desire for a non-slip finish. He seems to NOT be able to keep track of which clients communicated what to him. Before the install, he was certain that he talked to me about whether or not I wanted a stain or not put on prior to the ceramic layer.

"If this member continues to invite the neighbor dog in to play with hers on the Maple floor, then WearMax is what she needs. Taber abrasion testing, which the flooring industry uses to measure and compare scuff resistance from finish to finish, suggests there isn't a tougher finish than WearMax for wearability.   Everyone, please note that prior to the neighbor dog's visit, this member considered the WearMax floor coating to be "almost flawless."  I guess I can live with that, but won't settle for anything less, either.  That's why I offered to repair the appearance of my courtesy coat free of charge within two days of the complaint.   I received no direction on my original offer for over 30 days and expect Angie's List to duly note this. After the dog claw dents have been removed from the Maple, and after I have received full payment for flooring and finish supplied prior to the dog damage, I will again offer to repair the floor in appearance and slip-resistance, as a courtesy.   Maple specifications were on the delivery documentation, but I have supplied another copy to the member, as requested. WearMax pricing has also been verfied, as requested. The total cost of all WearMax applied prior to the dog damage is $700.76, plus sales tax. I expect the member to pay this if her flooring company will not. I also look forward to recantation of all character judgements conferred upon me. "Passive aggressive"? Really? This member also referred to her general contractor's style of communication as "passive aggressive", just not to his face and, of course, not on Angie's List for all to read. If this member can refrain from such inflammatory language, then I look forward to an amenable mediation with the Better Business Bureau and your member."

We met with Jerry and determined that he had an attention to detail that we wanted and that he used low voc finishes. We also noted at that time that I had challenges communicating with him. Expecting him to have his assistant present for the job and expecting him to do a good job, we hired him. His assistant was not present for any of the work. The work is beautiful. The communication challenges continued from expectations of what work would done on a particular day to what the "complete job" consisted of. Given the disagreement of what the "complete job" is, the installation of new trim around a doorway will be completed by another vendor. This work was not in writing specifically, but I believed to be covered by the time and materials clause in the contract, especially as it was mentioned multiple times prior to starting the work.
Response from Adamsson Hardwood Floors Forever
"I am happy to provide a copy of the contract to any interested party, as well as a daily schedule of the proposed work, which was completed, (with a complimentary additional coat,) AHEAD OF SCHEDULE. The $1850.00 for this 180 square foot dining room floor included tear out, disposal, delivery, removal and replacement of base boards, according to the homeowner's wishes, a complimentary reducer/threshold to 3 season porch, and again, a complimentary additional coat. I have photos of the installation of two custom red oak flush mount vents, centered exactly with duct work for maximum airflow using a plunge router and template. This homeowner expected work to commence on Monday without a down payment according to terms, and threatened to withold $200 from the proposed and complimentary work completed on Friday. I was then given a time frame of "sometime in the next month," to source and install a custom birch door trim, but was fired two working days later because I had yet to find the trim at what I would consider a fair price, even for hard-to-find material. The homeowner told me she had a history of bad experiences with contractors. Just add this back-to-back Super Service Award winner to the list, I guess."

I was originally shopping around for strand woven bamboo flooring for my new home. Jerry gave me a good estimate per sq foot over the phone so I had him come to the house to give me a more detailed estimate and to see a sample of his products. His bamboo samples were good quality, but as we talked more about being ‘green’ he told me more about local wood options. He never pushed me to change my mind from bamboo, but had so much knowledge about all the materials, that I changed my mind and was confident with my new choice. I went with a white oak that came from a mill he knew in Wisconsin. They have a Twin Cities warehouse too, so there was no waiting for materials to be shipped (bamboo would have taken at least 2 weeks to ship around the world). I scheduled delivery of the wood floors soon after, they were delivered a day or two later, and acclimated the climate in the house over the weekend. Jerry was then ready to install the next Tuesday, and the floors were installed by the weekend so we could move in (around the floors anyways). We got to work with Jerry to pick the perfect stain color to match the wood work that was already in the house (It did come out a little darker than we decided on with him – but it looks to good we don’t care). The sanding and finishing were done the following week and were dry and ready to move furniture onto by the next weekend. The sealer he used was no VOC and scratch resistant – important features to me. We love our new floor and so do our visitors. I would recommend working with Jerry. He knows what he is doing, features green products and finishes, and works like an artist.

We asked Jerry to come in while we were away to do the kitchen floor and so we didn't have to worry about dog and us not being able to go into the kitchen for the time it was drying. Jerry came over a few days before we left for the week, and did a patch on the floor so we could on agree on stain color and finish gloss. We left our door code with him for entry, and left. Not only did we have a beautiful floor when we came home, but there was almost no dust or mess left. As an Angie's List member, he also gave us a break on the cost of the top of the line finish product.

I was very tentative about doing anything as my husband and I don't always agree on remodeling projects. So actually we were slow in making our decisions on what we wanted and the contractor was patient with our schedule and the high traffic of dogs and children in our house.

Our overall experience was great, considering it involved the major thoroughfare of our house. Jerry and York were very considerate of us and our old cat when doing the work, and got the job done in the least amount of time possible so as to keep the disruption to a minimum. We are very happy with the end result (with our new runners it looks amazing), and it's hard to tell where the stain from the floor in the front hall ends and the floor in the den and the kitchen start. When talking to Jerry you can tell he really loves wood floors. He was the same in 2000 when he installed our new kitchen floor as part of our kitchen remodel. I would definitely recommend Jerry Adamsson to anyone for any kind of floor work.

Having flooring work done, especially in a front hall, and a major thoroughfare, is disruptive, but Jerry and York did an amazing job of keeping that disruption to a minimum. York especially was very nice to our old cat and made sure that the cat had a way to get to his food and box. Jerry has an amazing knowledge and love for flooring, especially wood floors. In 2000 he installed our kitchen floor during our kitchen remodel, and the floor still looks fantastic for all the traffic and use it gets. Also, it's a challenge to match floor stain color after so many years of being exposed to light, and you would be hard pressed to tell where one floor stain ends and the new begins for both the den and the kitchen. We will be calling Jerry every time we need floor work done.

They did an outstanding job. This was a very difficult project. They were willing to work with us to get the stain color and darkness we wanted. Very professional, honest, and completed the work on time even though we had more challenges than anticipated at the outset. This is a company that will work with you to achieve the reults you want. Very knowledgeable about wood, stain, finishes, and professional workmanship. We highly recommend!

The job went well. We were able to use the floor in the kitchen the next morning, but didn't move our furniture back for a week. There were 2 spots that looked like dried puddles of varnish. The guy came back and fixed them with no problem. We had a few email problems, don't know if it was their system or mine. But everything turned out fine.

Jerry worked with me to select an appropriate wood that would stand up to a dog and a busy family. I'd had a previous floor installed by a different company (at a different house) and the dog had damaged it severely within a year. Jerry analyzed it and determined that the wood I had chosen was too soft, so he put his vast knowledge to work and helped me select a wood for our new house that is hard enough to stand up to wear and tear. And it looks beautiful! The installation took a little longer than I expected, but it was due to the nature of the wood, and the finish is flawless. It really looks amazing, and it's getting lots of rave reviews from everyone.

The entire process went very well. The communication, before and during was clear, there were no surprises during the installation or costs. The final cost was exactly what the estimate stated. The workmanship was excellent and the workers worked very hard! And they cleaned up every day and left the house in good shape. I liked the use of the internet to get estimates and make payments.

I called and had an estimate appointment for two days later. I received an estimate by email within an hour of the appointment. After accepting the estimate, I chose a date I would like to start the work and was put on the schedule for the following week. I received several emails and phone calls keeping me up to date with the progress and it was finished within the week. It looks great!

We were going to have it sanded and refinished, but he talked us out of it because of the type of hardwood floor it is. He said he'd be willing to do it, but he advised against it because it's not a three quarter inch solid hardwood floor, it is a pre-manufactured floor. By sanding it, it would have become too thin and end up curling around the edges. I appreciated that he talked us out of it.

His name was York and he actually hand mixed eight different stains for us to choose from. He found such a beautiful brown stain with a cherry look to it. It is so gorgeous you can't believe. They were very professional. He was very careful with everything. He was a perfectionist. Everything that he did he did with great care, and with real love of his work. He was also very honest and he was so trusting that we even gave him the key to our house. He is a fine person. I would highly recommend this company to anyone. He also did very good clean up. The owner, Jerry, came out and gave a very detailed estimate of the work and it was exactly what the bill was. Nothing was added to it.

I am very impressed with this company in every way. The owner came out at least four times during the process to assess all details and make sure everything was done perfectly. His workmen were punctual, polite, accommodating to our family of four children, and scheduled their work hours according to our family's needs. When we had several holes in our bedroom floor from moving walls, I thought I would just have to live with an ugly floor. Wow! The skilled man who was sent did a magnificent job. The wood was matched exactly in type, color and arrangement. I was so very pleased. Next a different man came over to sand, seal and finish all the wood flooring. He kept exactly to the schedule promised ahead of time. The result exceeds even my hopes. We are still walking around our home marveling at how lovely it turned out. I would give this company an unqualified recommendation to anyone who has a need for skilled flooring work. And finally, the cost was even less than I thought it would be.

When we removed the carpet from our new house we were shocked at how terrible the floors looked. There were black stains, different colors of finish, numerous staple holes and even places where small chunks of wood had been damaged. At this point, I knew there was no other alternative than to refinish the floors. I didn't care about the floors looking perfect, but what I had was not reasonable. I read a great deal on floor refinishing and had myself convinced that I would be able to do this job myself. Some of my in-laws from out of town are carpenters, make a living doing interior work, and have a general knowledge of many things related. They are the type of people that will often say that if you study up on particular subjects, it is very possible to do much work yourself without having to hire someone. In spite of their usual enthusiasm, they were very quick to tell me that they would not dare attempt to refinish a floor. In their opinion, such a task is very easy to mess up and should be left to professionals. Further, even if one felt like they had the knowledge and experience to take on such a task themselves, many people do not understand that the equipment one would rent for such a task is far inferior to the higher quality and professional tools that anyone who does this for a living would have. Taking my in-laws' advise I hired someone. After watching these guys from Shademaker work, I am so glad I did not attempt this myself. These guys are very good at what they do. Not only did my floors improve, they look perfect. It looks like brand new wood. I never expected this; I just wanted them to look better. They were very passionate about their work and great guys to get to know. Further, they took a great deal of time with us examining all possibilities of work and were willing to do as little or as much work that we didn't feel we could do. They were very clear about time lines, what needed to be done, little things we could do to help, etc. We have more work to be done and will get to it as soon as we can. These are the guys that I will call. This just isn't about floors. It is guys like this that make the world a better place to live. I'm serious. Don't screw up and try this yourself. Call these guys.
