Family owned business They tell me how responsive, and honest they are,and I would agree except one issue Im having I was all on board, until...They dug the hold last May,2012 and it was all good until they had to come back and take care of the huge pile of dirt from digging the basement. Lee Klingberg, the owner, said, "in the spring we will come back and take care of that dirt" Well, they came back and took care of the dirt alright and did a ok job except there is a grade issue by rear foundation that retains water Heres the issue I got billed $800 after the fact ! I dont agree at all. When there is additional cost involved, tell the client, there is additioal cost ! The dirt has to get graded out,and in original contract it dident say it was extra, and by the statemments by Lee, I was led to believe it would be taken care of. If there was an additional cost I certainly would of liked the opportunity to know this and approve it or not. I could of had my landscape contractor grade it as part of the landscape planning. This company never told me that there was any additional cost involved. What company would leave a pile a dirt there, then charge you later because they figure they got you by the cuhone's,especially after they said they would "come back in spring" and take care of it ? That means to me that they will take care of it... They dident say we will take care of it if you pay us additionally. There is no homeowner after building a home, is going to have a company just come out and run free and get billed later and not know the cost. The office lady is confrontational, and I feel bad because of the whole thing. They seem to be decent hard working family running a business. But dumbfounded regarding "the communication" especially when it comes to honoring their word, and when it comes to a customer being billed for "an extra" really??? There was no communcation about any additional cost regardless of what this company says. Seems the owner did not communicate there was additional cost, and the office is back peddeling. I was not told, now they are trying to come at me from after the fact and I'm trying to resolve it,but I just dont do business this way and I feel bad because while I am a man of principle, and I pay my bills. I feel the office person, the reletve,or wife, is caught between me and her husband and I know she will obviously support "the business" , her husband, before a customer such as myself. I have emailed and called and talked to my builder, but issue is on going The next step is this review, then BBB, then my attorney. Shame, alway communicate with your customers and dont just go out and do work and send a bill later. They are really not a repeat business so I guess they dont care if you get upset because they got all the money for "the dig" then they come back later and charge you to grade it and dont tell you and thats another way to generate revenue I guess...may have to consult the Department commerce next.

Response from KLINGBERG EXCAVATING INC
We are very surprised at this complaint as well as upset at his strong accusations. This is a prime example of “the squeaky wheel getting the most grease.” We appreciate the chance to give the facts that (deleted member name) omits before slandering our good name all over the Twin Cities. First off, the original bid nor the final bill address a “final grade.” As (deleted member name) stated, the proposal didn’t say final grade was extra, so when he ordered the work done, wasn’t the miscommunication on his part for not asking the price? He was told on 4/29/13 that it was an extra cost. Secondly, the cement man quit after the basement was dug. The hole sat in two weeks of heavy rain, creating the need to have to sub cut the basement and footings. This is some of the dirt that is the piles that we’re talking about. Although we were hired by the builder, (deleted member name) made requests for work to be done. To be more specific, we were told to come to the site to move the piles of the dirt. In the fall when the dirt was dry enough to move, the builder told us to come and move the dirt piles. We went out with a 953 Traxcavator and a T300 Bobcat, loaded on a LoBoy and trailer, only to find out that there was so much stuff in the yard where the dirt needed to go that we couldn’t do anything. Had we been able to disperse of the dirt, there would have been a charge on the final bill for that work done – there is not! There was lumber, tools, decorative stones, paper, a temporary propane line and other items scattered all over the front and side yard. (deleted member name) was out there this day and was told that we’d have to come back another day when the yard was cleaned up. We didn’t hear from anyone until this spring, after the house was closed and our bill was paid to date. We did not bill for this move, as it would be part of a final grade (which was not quoted). We also did two other “favors” for (deleted member name) and the builder. One, was to turn on the water to the house from the main – which is not our job – the township’s people do that. Also, we turned on a valve at the force main for the septic, which is Orenco’s job (who couldn’t get it done due to the mud). (deleted member name) called us 4/27/13 and left a voice mail to come back to take care of the piles of dirt. On 4/29/13 at 9:35 AM, Jeff called (deleted member name) and told him that he could come back but this would be an extra cost. This was heard by Judie, who was 15 feet away. (deleted member name) claims he didn’t hear this!? The rains continued, but on 5/6/12, (deleted member name) called and spoke to Lee and said he was having boulders delivered at the end of the week and needed the dirt leveled off that week, not hauled away as was previously said. This work was done at a very reasonable cost – the bill should have run over $1,800.00 for this and all the extras we did. We, of course, want a happy customer. We are a fourth generation family operated company, in business since 1958, that takes prides in our honest reputation in our hometown. It is unfortunate that (deleted member name) doesn’t realize that when people come out to do work at his house that they expect to get paid. From our part of his home construction, we billed for each time we came back to do additional work, unless it was bid and this final grade was not. The bid states “dig and backfill basement.” –it does not say final grade! In an effort to problem solve, we would like to have an unbiased person review these facts and advise…is (deleted member name) claim fair? Or is he just trying to dodge another bill?
