The technician was very prompt, friendly and professional. He explained exactly what was wrong and what he was going to do to fix it. He did some extra work like spraying out the A/C unit and looking at the furnace for any signs of corrosion from condensation. The reason I am giving this a "B" rather than "A" is solely the cost. I bought a deal for $74 for the service call, normally worth $99. I mistakenly assumed this included some period of repair time - CenterPoint Energy charges $115 for a service call which includes 30 minutes of repair time, which would've been enough to replace the capacitor. But the $74 didn't include any repair time. So in addition to the $74 I paid approximately $165 the replacement capacitor and labor. I don't have a problem paying extra for excellent work (which this was), but this was about double what I would've paid CenterPoint, which I feel is excessive.
Description of Work: Replaced A/C capacitor, sprayed out the A/C, checked out other connections.

I have used Standard Heating for decades. I used them when I lived in Highland at two different houses, then moved out of their area for a while but when I moved back to Eagan, they were the first ones/only ones I contacted. Jeff was a really nice guy. Sat down with me and told me all the details of what he did and why he did it. They now have a program where one pays monthly instead of a once a year payment as I used to do. Which means I get priority when I need service (handy in the winter if the heat goes off) and also 10% discounts on "stuff". Same as I have been doing for years only now monthly instead of yearly payment. Jeff also got a "nice guy" rating from my son as well and my son doesn't like too many people who come to do service in the house so Attaboy, Jeff ! I am an Angie's List member, btw.
Description of Work: Jeff changed filters on furnace and humidifier; cleaned the outside A/C unit; checked all connections, CO level, did a general look-over to spot potential trouble spots and gave me a full report

I had them come out about three times and it’s not until the third time they finally figured out what the problem maybe. My interactions with them were fine. The people are fine. They just don’t know what they are doing. The third time they came out, they didn’t actually finish it. They told me, probably, what was wrong. I just had to fix it some other way.

I contacted Standard Heating on Monday to have them come look at my 6 year old central air conditioning system that was no longer working properly. System would run continuously, but provide very little cooling. The technician, Paul, arrived as scheduled on Wednesday, calling about 15 minutes prior to his arrival. Upon arrival, he asked background questions to determine the symptoms I was experiencing with the system. He first checked the outside air conditioner unit, and determined that it was low on coolant. He offered three options to restore the system to proper function: 1) Simply recharge the system without fixing leak (a low price option since it appeared to be a slow leak since the system still had some coolant, 2) Recharge system using a leak seal material, which would seal up any small leaks, or 3) search system for leaks and repair/replace part(s) with individual leaks. After discussing pricing and the chances of correcting the problem with each option, I elected to go with option 2 and had him fix the issue using the leak seal material, which was most likely considerably cheaper than searching and repairing individual leak(s). Paul also checked the inside portion of the air conditioning system to ensure proper function. When doing this, he offered suggestions regarding use of air filters that will save me money and help the system to work more efficiently. Paul was extremely professional and courteous. By the same evening of his afternoon visit, my house was once again cool and comfortable. I will definitely contact Standard Heating and Air Conditioning next time I need work done on my furnace/air conditioning system.

They were very prompt. I had had all kinds of problems with one of these new thermostats. I had two other companies come out and they couldn't make it work. The last one said, "You better get a regular HVAC company out here." So I called them. They came out right away and put in an old style thermostat. It was new, but it was an older model. The other ones wouldn't work with my air conditioning. They couldn't talk to it. They picked this guy. He was very experienced. It took him no time at all to figure out the problem.

They were good. The office staff was extremely helpful, timely and courteous. The gentleman himself who actually came out to the house misquoted us as far as what needed to be handled so that was a poor experience but overall I would recommend them. He wanted to charge us for like a $1500 because he couldn't get a strip to screw out, my husband did that and it didn't cost us anything.

The problem started with our changing the thermostat that controls the A/C and heating system in the house. The old thermostats were wired oddly for reasons we had not understood properly. The Honeywell help line told us to follow a particular wiring based on our earlier understanding. However, this caused problems with one of the thermostats. The Standard Heating and A/C technician "fixed" one problem in January this year but without really understanding the deeper issues. However, this fix caused the thermostat to turn on cooling all the time in summer. This was the problem the present service call was intended to fix. The technician who worked with us to take care of this problem arrived punctually and took a look at the controller. The wiring diagram for the controller was missing that confounded matters. He tried a few things but eventually decided that the best he could do at this point was to deactivate the errant thermostat. As an overall, most cost-effective fix, he recommended replacing the entire zone controller system on the basis that (a) the old one was outdated and (b) by replacing it with a new system, we would know off the bat how it was wired. The price quoted for the replacement was in excess of $1000. I was sufficiently concerned about having to pay $1000 to fix a problem that arose from simply changing a thermostat that I decided to try some alternatives with regard to the wiring of that thermostat. In the process, I used the understanding of the system that I had got from the Standard Heating and A/C tech and tips I got from the web. Fortunately, the most obvious solution/guess about the wiring worked at least for the summer: the thermostat is now calling for cooling at the right times. I am still unsure if the problem has also been fixed with regard to heating, I have to wait till the winter to check this out. I should quantify my experience with Standard Heating and A/C at the end of the two interactions with them that I have summarized above. Both technicians that I worked with were professional and generally helpful. I got enough information from them about the system so that I could eventually try to fix the system myself. I do wish they had tried the "experiment" with thermostat wiring that I eventually tried (and that seems to have worked): in hindsight it appears to have been an obvious one to check out, even with my extremely limited knowledge of how zone controllers work. In light of this, I would say that it is a good idea to pay attention to the details of what the technician tells you and to think a little about possible fixes from there that they may not have considered. In this case, it at least saved me an immediate expense of $1000; of course, I would have got a new and modern zone controller if I went this route, but I am still to decide if this is necessarily a Good Thing if the old and antiquated one serves the basic function needed.
Description of Work: We had a problem with the zone controller that the provider was to look into.

They replaced the condenser in the air conditioner, but left with the air conditioner still not working. It wasn't his fault, he isn't and electrician and could not do the service disconnect box. He gave us instructions on what needed to be done and told us to either have an electrician come out or to fix the problem ourselves. With the instructions he gave us, we were able to replace the service disconnect box our selves. (We did this about 20 years ago, so we knew what we were doing.) We paid $374.00 plus got credit for $75.00 for the service call though Angie's List. Total of this bill was $449.00. We replaced the service disconnect box and were back in the cool again! While the service technician was there we discussed the repairs for the furnace. We then realized that we were going to end up with about $1200.00 in repairs on our ancient appliances. He recommended that we talk with a sales person about replacing the furnace and AC. Because at the time, we were considered to be in a "No cool" situation, we were bumped up to just under an emergency status and the salesman came out the next morning. After talking with him, we realized that we were going to be investing about 20% of the cost of new appliances, and decided to go ahead and replace them. They scheduled the install for 7/3/15 at 7:30-8:00 am. The service tech showed up before 8 am and had it all done before 3 pm. The team that they had out to our home did a wonderful job. They did everything, including a different service disconnect box, new pad for under the AC unit and thermostat. They took away the old furnace and AC, cleaned up and even swept behind the furnace when they removed the old one. (I can't get back there because it is to close to the wall.) They gave us the instructions for usage, filters, settings on the thermostat and cleaned up after themselves. Their electrician check out our electrical service to make sure everything was correct, and that we had everything set to go. The electrician even figured out what was wrong with our door bell that hasn't worked in three years! I only have one issue. The service call that I purchased on Angie's list said it had a value of $100.00, but the purchase price was $75.00, so I only got credit for what I paid and not the value of it. They gave us credit for the $374.00 service from 6/22/15, the $75.00 from the Angie's list service call, they filed for all of the rebates from the utilities and gave us credit for those and made us feel comfortable when we paid the $6100.00 bill.
Description of Work: On 6/20/15 I purchased a service call for $75.00, valued at $100.00 from Angie's list. I scheduled the service call through Angie's List for 6/21/15 or 6/22/15. On 6/22/15 We had them out because our central air conditioner quit working. (It's 27 years old). They found 2 problems with it. One a condenser was burned out and the second was a burned out service disconnect box. Then he took a look at our furnace. When he inspected our furnace (28 years old-and the house is only 26 years old), they found that our electronic ignition system was buzzing and was going to need to be replaced before winter.

Technician called in advance to say he was on his way. He arrived within half an hour of the beginning of the designated appointment window. He was professional and friendly and explained to me what he would do. He showed me points of concern with a camera that he inserted into the unit. He recommended a new furnace, based on age (26 years) and some cracking in the heating element. He scheduled an appointment for an estimate while he was here. He took his time to ask if I had questions and to explain everything clearly. He also made sure to let me know that if I bought a new furnace, I could have the cost of the tune-up deducted from the price.

We have been using Standard Heating since 2008, and they have nearly always done perfect work for us. Once in a great while we have gotten a somewhat "green" tech who made some minor mistakes, but most of the time the guys are prompt, efficient, and super professional. In 2012 our old A/C unit failed and Standard Heating installed a new unit and re-balanced our system, including the addition of a new return in the basement and troubleshooting of airflow issues. This process involved half a dozen people on a couple visits and everything was handled great.

They broke my central air conditioner. Earlier this Spring, one of their service technicians came over to prepare our air conditioner for the summer, and remarked the 15-year-old unit should probably be replaced sometime soon. I agreed, but my understanding was it could last another year or two, not that it needed to be replaced immediately. Father's Day weekend, my 85-year-old Dad came over for barbecue and I turned the AC on. Absolutely no effect; the air coming from the vents was the same as outside, regardless of how we set the thermostat. To get their attention, had my credit card company cancel and reissue the card I was using to pay for the service contract. They noticed and called in about two weeks. I told them I wouldn't continue the contract if their service was this bad, and they offered to send a technician to examine the work done on the air conditioner. The tech reported there was no refrigerant in it, that it had entirely leaked out, "probably due to some defect in the unit". I don't know what to believe. Are their technicians so deskilled they don't know how to service this unit? Do they have such poor judgement they don't know when a unit is broken or how to handle it? Did they do this to pressure me to buy a new one? I view these all as equally likely explanations and I expect engaging with Standard would result in little more than a protracted debate, for which I have no patience. This is what I know: last year, my air conditioner worked and now it doesn't. The difference was Standard Heating and Air Conditioning's "service". My experience with them leads me to not trust them in the least. I believe if I hire them for further work, I would be complicit in an obvious conflict of interest. I regret having called them at all.

The entire experience was top notch from the initial meeting where I got an estimate through the scheduling and installation of my new equipment. Denise did a great job on the estimate and explaining the installation process. Installation went very smoothly and my installer walked me thru the new equipment - so I know how to change the filters & switch from heating to cooling. I'd been dreading this day for the last couple years and can safely say the whole experience exceeded my expectations because of how smoothly things went. Highly recommend this company.

My AC unit is heat pump, which is more complicated than regular AC. The AC is not starting this summer. I called another service company, which seems too intimidating for them. They even suggested I replace the heat pump by them. I then called standard heating, which I am so glad I did. They have technical support to fix complicated problems. The techinician is so nice, he even called the installer to check if it is still under warranty. Will definate use them again!

First I called Standard to diagnose a problem with my old gravity furnace not working. The technician (Seth) was very knowledgeable and explained in detail what was wrong. Unfortunately, he also explained in detail why it couldn't be fixed. For safety reasons, Saint Paul building codes are very strict about gravity furnaces, and it was not likely that ours could be repaired legally and safely. Seth gets an A+. We elected to buy a new furnace. That salesperson, Dave (now retired, unfortunately) was fantastic. He did not try to upsell us at all. I'm confident we got the furnace we need for our size house and nothing more. I had to ask him about the more expensive allergen-filtering filters. Dave also arranged financing for us, and despite letting the salesperson do this instead of working with our own bank, as far as I can tell we didn't get screwed. Dave gets an A+. Installation gets a B, just because of some minor issues: 1. Nobody suggested getting our ducts cleaned before having the new furnace installed. This would have saved us a huge amount of mess. With a gravity furnace, you never think about having your ducts cleaned, because there are no blowers - you don't see any dust coming out. As soon as they turned on the blowers on our new furnace, a giant disgusting dust cloud filled our first floor. There ended up being a layer of dust on everything in our house that we had to clean off. It is probably not obvious to most consumers that a company that services and installs furnaces and ductwork does not also clean ducts. I think this would be something worth mentioning to customers. 2. There were some screws and dust bunnies on the basement floor after the installers left. 3. The asbestos remediation company had to come twice. There ended up being no asbestos in the old furnace, but the installers later discovered some in the chimney. This might not have been foreseeable. For the AC install, everything went just as well. The installers missed one minor building code (Saint Paul only) item, so they had to come back out and fix it.
Description of Work: We used Standard last fall to install a furnace, and this spring to add central air.
