OUR TECHNICIAN WAS VERY HONEST. TOLD US IT WOULD COST $600 TO REPAIR, BUT THAT NEW, MORE EFFICIENT UNITS STARTED AROUND $1400. EVEN ENCOURAGED US TO LOOK AROUND AND PRICE OTHERS THROUGHOUT THE WINTER SINCE IT WAS THE END OF THE SEASON. WAS VERY GLAD FOR HIS HONESTY. WE ARE TAKING HIS ADVICE AND GOING TO SEARCH DURING THE WINTER MONTHS TO FIND SOME BARGAINS.
Description of Work: OUR AIR CONDITIONING WENT OUT AT THE END OF THE SUMMER, BUT IT WAS STILL HUMID. I SUBMITTED A REQUEST ON THEIR WEBSITE FOR SERVICE (WHICH THEY OFFER), WAITED UNTIL 1PM THE NEXT DAY, AS I HAD NOT HEARD ANYTHING. I THEN CALLED, THEY SAID THEY HAD THE WEB ORDER, BUT JUST HADN'T GOTTEN TO IT YET. TOLD ME SOMEONE WOULD BE OUT THE NEXT DAY BETWEEN 1-4. THE NEXT DAY, DID NOT HEAR ANYTHING UNTIL 4. OFFICE PERSON TOLD ME THEY WERE RUNNING BEHIND, WOULD BE A COUPLE MORE HOURS. 5 HOURS LATER (8:50 P.M.) A SERVICE TECHNICIAN SHOWED UP. HE WAS VERY APOLOGETIC. HE FELT BAD AND DID NOT KNOW HE HAD OUR ORDER OR WHAT WE HAD BEEN TOLD UNTIL 8:30. HE SEEMED VERY UPSET THAT WE DID NOT GET SERVICE UNTIL LATE.

I HAVE USED STANDARD FOR OTHER WORK AT MY HOUSE INCLUDING INSTALLATION OF VENT FANS IN MY BATHROOM AND INSTALLATION OF AN AIR EXCHANGER. BOTH OF THESE PROJECTS WENT WELL SO I CONTACTED STANDARD FOR AN ESTIMATE FOR A FURNACE FOR MY GARAGE SHOP. WHEN I CONTACTED STANDARD IN AUGUST 2005, I WAS TOLD THEY CHARGE $79 FOR A PERSON TO MAKE A TRIP TO OUR HOUSE AND PROVIDE AN ESTIMATE. I WAS TOLD THIS IS A NEW POLICY; I WAS NOT CHARGED FOR VISITS TO OUR HOUSE FOR PREVIOUS WORK. I TOLD THEM I WOULD GO TO ANOTHER COMPANY SINCE I WAS NOT WILLING TO PAY FOR AN ESTIMATE. I BECAME EVEN MORE UPSET ABOUT THE CHARGE FOR AN ESTIMATE WHEN I NOTICED THAT THE STANDARD HEATING & AIR CONDITIONING ADVERTISEMENT IN THE SEPTEMBER 2005 ISSUE OF ANGIE'S LIST NEWSLETTER INDICATES "FREE ESTIMATES ON FURNACES AND AIR CONDITIONERS." OBVIOUSLY THEY NEED TO UPDATE THEIR ADVERTISEMENT TO CORRECT THIS FALSE ADVERTISEMENT.

AFTER REBATE FROM XCELL, THE SYSTEM CAME TO $2900.00. KEN CAME OUT AND INSTALLED THE NEXT DAY AND THE ELECTRICAL WORK WAS DONE ON MONDAY.

MY HOME INSPECTOR FOUND RUST ON MY ONE YEAR OLD FURNACE. THEY DID SEND SOMEONE TO INSPECT AND THEY CAME AND SCRAPED THE RUST OFF AS MUCH AS THEY COULD GET TO, THEY PAINTED OVER IT. THE TECHNICIAN THAT CAME WAS VERY NICE, BUT SOME OF THE PEOPLE I TALKED TO WERE RUDE TO ME. I WOULD HAVE LIKED A BRAND NEW FURNACE. I FELT OBLIGATED TO REPORT THIS UNFORTUNATE DEALING WITH THEM.

HE TOLD ME THERE WAS ABSOLUTELY NO NEED TO REPLACE THE BLACK PIPE AND HE COULD'T T UNDERSTAND WHILE THEY DIDN'T T HAVE IT ON HAND AND HAD TO ORDER IT AS IT IS VERY READILY AVAILABLE. HE WAS VERY UPSET AND THINKS THAT THEY WERE TRYING TO PULL ONE OVER ON ME AND THAT HE WOULD SEND SOMEONE OVER THE NEXT DAY TO HOOK IT UP. HIS COMPANY CHARGED ME $90 AN HOUR PLUS ABOUT $50 FOR PARTS. I ENDED UP PAYING LESS THAN HALF OF WHAT STANDARD GAVE ME AN ESTIMATE FOR. LUCKILY I KNEW SOMEONE IN THE BUSINESS, OTHERWISE I WOULD HAVE HAD TO CALL AROUND FOR OTHER ESTIMATES AND WOULD HAVE BEEN WITHOUT GAS FOR SEVERAL DAYS. ALSO, I DID CALL AND TALK TO SOMEONE AT STANDARD THE NEXT DAY AND TELL THEM HOW I WAS FEELING ABOUT HOW I WAS TREATED AND WAS TOLD THAT A MANAGER WOULD CALL ME. HOWEVER I NEVER HEARD BACK FROM THEM. VERY BAD EXPERIENCE!

I CALLED TO MAKE AN APPOINTMENT TO HAVE THEM COME OUT AND HOOK MY GAS, HOWEVER THEY DIDN'T DO ANYTHING AS THEY ONLY CAME OUT FOR AN ESTIMATE. I BELIEVE THERE WAS A MISCOMMUNICATION AS THEY WEREN'T THERE TO HOOK UP MY GAS BUT TO GIVE ME AN ESTIMATE ONLY. BECAUSE OF THIS I WAS GOING TO BE WITHOUT GAS FOR A FEW DAYS. I WAS TOLD THAT MY PIPE (1'' BLACK PIPE) WASN'T ON HAND AND THEY WOULD HAVE TO ORDER IT. THE GUY TRIED TO GET ME TO CHANGE TO COPPER. AT ONE POINT WE WERE STANDING TALKING AND HE MOVED CLOSER TO ME AND I BELIEVE TRIED TO INTIMIDATE ME. HE TOLD ME THE BLACK PIPE INSTALLATION WOULD TAKE A FEW DAYS BECAUSE THEY HAD TO ORDER AND IT WOULD COST $675. HE COULD DO A TEMPORARY HOOK UP FOR AN ADDITIONAL $300. I ENDED UP SAYING NO TO BOTH. I THINK HE THOUGHT BECAUSE I WAS A WOMAN HE COULDN'T TELL ME ANYTHING AND MAKE MONEY OFF ME, I COULD BE WRONG BUT THAT IS HOW I FELT.

THERE WAS A MISCOMMUNICATION WITH THIS CUSTOMER AND FOR THAT CORRECTIVE ACTION HAS BEEN TAKEN. OUR POLICY IS TO ALWAYS PROVIDE A QUOTE BEFORE PERFORMING THE WORK. THE TECHNICIAN DID OFFER TO PERFORM THE WORK IN BOTH BLACK PIPE OR COPPER BOTH OF WHICH ARE ACCEPTABLE METHODS FOR THIS APPLICATION. THE FACT OF THE MATTER IS THAT BLACK PIPE WOULD HAVE ADDED UNNECSSARY COSTS TO THE REPAIR. STEPHANIE REUTER, SERVICE MANAGER

PROMPT AND GENERALLY COURTEOUS. HOWEVER, IT TOOK 3 SERVICE CALLS TO MY HOME TO FIX THE PROBLEM AND ONE OF THE 2 REPAIRMEN WHO WAS HERE DIDN'T HAVE A CLUE WHAT HE WAS DOING. ON HIS LAST VISIT, HE WAS HERE 5 HOURS, TAKING PARTS IN AND OUT. AT ONE POINT, HE THOUGHT HE HAD IT FIXED AND AS WE WERE DISCUSSING THE CHARGES, THE FURNACE SHUT OFF BEFORE REACHING TEMP SETTING. AT ONE POINT DURING HIS MARATHON SERVICE CALL, HE SAID HIS COLLEAGUES WERE TELLING HIM TO TELL ME TO CALL SALES FOR A NEW FURNACE. HE FINALLY FIXED IT W/ A PAT THAT 5 HOURS EARLIER HE SAID "COULDN'T BE THE PROBLEM." WANTED TO CHARGE ME FOR THE EXTRA TIME & DEMANDED THAT I PAY OR HE'D GET IN TROUBLE." THE COMPANY SETTLED CHARGES FAIRLY.

THIS CUSTOMER HAD AN INTERMITTENT PROBLEM THAT TOOK MORE TIME TO DIAGNOSE THAN A SYSTEM THAT HAS FAILED. WE DID INVEST THE EXTRA TIME TO MAKE SURE THAT THE PROBLEM WAS RESOLVED. SINCE WE CHARGE A FLAT RATE FOR REPAIRS RATHER THAN BY THE HOUR THE CUSTOMER WAS NOT PENALIZED FOR THE EXTRA TIME IT TOOK TO DIAGNOSE AND PERFORM THE REPAIR. STEPHANIE REUTER, SERVICE MANAGER

OF THE FOUR COMPANIES WHO GAVE ME ESTIMATES FOR REPLACING MY CENTRAL A/C, I FELT LIKE STANDARD WAS THE LEAST PROFESSIONAL. THE QUOTE WAS REASONABLE AND THE SALESPERSON WAS TECHNICALLY COMPETENT, BUT I DIDN'T LIKE HOW HE DISPARAGED THE COMPETITION AND THEIR PRODUCTS, AMONG OTHER (PETTY) THINGS. FOR EXAMPLE, HE INSISTED THAT I WOULD HAVE TO BUY A NEW THERMOSTAT TO VALIDATE THE WARRANTY ON THE NEW A/C (NO OTHER COMPANY REQUIRED THIS), HE SPENT A LOT OF TIME GOING THROUGH BROCHURES TRUMPING UP SILLY MARKETING POINTS AND HE WAS PARTICULARLY PUSHING THE PURON SYSTEM AT ADDITIONAL COST (I LATER FOUND OUT THAT THE COST TO THEM FOR PURON VS FREON SYSTEMS IS EXACTLY THE SAME). OVERALL, MY IMPRESSION OF STANDARD WAS THAT THEY WERE NOT QUITE TRUSTWORTHY.

WE PROVIDE WARRANTIES ON PRODUCTS THAT WE INSTALL. IN OTHER WORDS, A CUSTOMER DOES NOT HAVE TO BUY OUR THERMOSTAT IN ORDER TO "VALIDATE THE WARRANTY ON THE NEW A/C." THAT BEING SAID, WE DON''T WARRANTY PRODUCTS THAT WE DO NOT INSTALL SUCH AS EXISTING THERMOSTATS. ALSO, PURON AND FREON SYSTEMS ARE NOT THE SAME COST. AND FINALLY, OUR COMPANY POLICY IS TO NEVER BERATE THE COMPETITION OR THE COMPETITIONS'' PRODUCTS.

HAVE USED BEFORE, EXCELLENT WORK. EVEN DID INSTALLATION ON A SATURDAY WHEN TEMPERATURE SOARED, SO DID NOT HAVE TO LIVE THROUGH WEEKEND WITHOUT AIR. HAD TO CALL TO GET ALL ADVERTISED DISCOUNTS APPLIED,BUT TOOK CARE OF RIGHT AWAY.

THE FIFTH MAN CAME OUT AND LISTENED CAREFULLY AND DETERMINED THAT THE PROBLEM WAS IN THE " BREAKER BOX," WHICH CAUSED THE COMPRESSOR TO STOP WORKING. HE CALLED IN SPARK ELECTRIC AND THEY FIXED THE ELECTRIC BREAKERS WHILE SETH WORKED ON THE COMPRESSOR. NOW THE AIR CONDITIONER WORKS BETTER THAN IT HAS IN THE PAST 3 YEARS. GIVE STANDARD A/C AN A!
Description of Work: OUR AIR CONDITIONER DIDN'T WORK FOR THE LAST SUMMER MONTHS IN 2004 AND NOT IN SUMMER OF 2005. THEY SENT 4 MEN OUT AND 1 WOMAN WHO ACCOMPLISHED NOTHING AND CHARGED A LOT OF MONEY.
