My furnace died during the first round of cold in October. Salesman Dave Tyree likes to chat, but he also does seem to know his stuff. Unlike other bidders I talked to, he didn't oversize the furnace he recommended for my house. This new furnace keeps me warm without wasting energy. He also made asbestos removal part of the bid. Given the peculiarities of my old house, I couldn't install the most energy efficient furnace unit, and therefore couldn't qualify for the energy tax credit. Dave explained all the options and we decided on an 80% efficient furnace. It's much better than my old unit. One of the reasons I hired Standard was that they have a large enough workforce that they could get to my job much sooner than other companies I contacted. The asbestos abatement person, the furnace installation crew, and the electrician were all on time, and on the date arranged to get the work done. The chimney replacement was an extra $710 of the $5800 I spent. I thought that since it took the crew less than 2 hours to do this extra work, since they were already on site for the furnace installation, and since chimney parts were probably less than $150, this extra charge was excessive. I had to arrange the inspections for the furnace, but since I had to be at home for the inspectors, I guess that it made sense for me to make the series of calls to arrange the appointment time.
Description of Work: The company removed an antique forced air furnace and installed a new Bryant. There was an additional supply register they needed to install so that the air flow in the system was 'balanced'. Asbestos was removed from a water heater flue and at the base of my chimney where both the furnace and water heater flues entered. The crew discovered that there was a gap in my existing metal chimney (pipes had disconnected over time) and so the old metal flue was removed. Accumulated leaf trash packed in the chimney was removed, and a new double wall flue installed.

The team installing our furnace had multiple challenges as a high energy efficient furnace vents differently than our old furnace and doesn't go up the chimney or follow the existing venting. The reason we went with this company was because the technician Rick, made a special trip to our home, listened to our questions and concerns and helped us understand how it could be installed. I was happy to see that Rick came to do the installing along with his assistant Darren; this basically required going the length of the laundry room , through a wall and above a ceiling, requiring two holes in the ceiling which were adroitly concealed with two false ceiling registers and out the back of our home. The team that did the removal arrived at the appointed time. They lay down floor protection and cleaned and hauled away debris. Everyone was very professional and polite, checking with me as needed. I was extremely impressed with the installation of our furnace. (We went with this company because of the technician not because of the salesman)

I think that they have the same person who comes out to my home for the services. He comes out a couple of times a year. He is very nice and he seems very knowledgeable. He not only did the inspection, but he cleaned some parts which I appreciated. I do not know about the price, because I pay for the services annually and I have not shopped around.

They send you a letter letting you know that your furnace needs to be checked out every years. Sometimes I wonder if it really does, or they say that due to the economy. I assume they did the right thing. They had a lot of appointments so it took a while for them to come out. If you had a real problem, I think they would come out fast. There was a time that I had a leaking hose and they came out right away. They are a good company. I purchased my furnace from them, and I will continue to use them.

We were told the furnace had a cracked burner and replacement parts are not available on our 20 year-old furnace. The technician said we needed to get a new furnace immediately, although he did not detect CO at that time. We also received a follow-up letter stating our furnace needed to be replaced as it was dangerously disfunctional. We scheduled an appointment with a sales rep, Arla, who was very nice to work with. She was also very thorough and the consultation took several hours. Before going through with the purchase, we got a second inspection and the technician said there were no cracks and no CO leaks. He also said replacement parts would be available, if needed. I realize that the furnace is nearing the end of its life expectancy, and will be ready to purchase a new one if needed, but I probably won't contact Standard as I felt I was being pushed into a speedy and unnecessary purchase.

This review was posted on 11/6/09, for a service call performed on 1/2/09. The member got a second opinion from a competitor of ours which differed from our diagnosis. We believe that we are correct in our diagnosis and have a genuine concern for this member's situation. If the member would return any of the voice mail messages that I have left, I would offer to have our Technician come out at no additional cost to show her where the failure in the heat exchanger actually is.

They gave me an estimate quick and could install within 5 days. Their workers were very clean. Carpets and booties to keep the house clean from their shoes. Furnace installed quickly and with no repeat visits needed. All work explained clearly and new thermostat installed and set up with instructions given. Only bad part so far is the electrician didn't come on install day. Furnace was working when they left though so no problems.

I initiated contact with Standard by emailing [email protected] with a description of the work I wanted done and detailed pictures of the installation and work required. Summer called promptly to inform me she had received the email and explained their process still required a visit by a technician to formalize a quote. This visit would cost $135 which would be applied to the cost of the repair if performed. I agreed to the visit. When the technician came to formalize a quote for repairing the radiator, it quickly became apparent he had never seen the information package provided with the email and also was totally unfamiliar with the style of base board radiator. (Burnham Baseray). Progress slowed considerably at this point. After about two weeks and a few calls to Summer, I received a quote for $2300.00. During this period, I also contacted another vendor who was familiar with the radiator who provided a quote of $750.00 for the same work. My observation with Standard was generally positive. They were always available, professional, and personable. Unfortunately, when the work deviates from the norm, they can be very expensive.
Description of Work: I needed a section of cast iron base board radiator replaced. The section was leaking at a seam. The radiator was originally installed in the late 70's.

We are sorry that we were unable to provide the solution for the member. I am sure that what was ultimately done here for $750 was not what we were quoting for. We compare prices with our competitors on a regular basis and are very competitive in the marketplace, which allows us to continue to grow in a down market.

The technician showed up when dispatch said he would. He wore blue booties. He performed checks on my air conditioner and even cleaned it. He also installed a new Aprilaire filter so I'd be ready for heating season. No mess left -- very clean.
Description of Work: I'm on Standard Heating's service plan. A great value for the price. Technicians are always courteous, prompt, and extremely knowledgeable ... and they wear the blue booties over their shoes! I used a different company to install a furnace and air conditioner, but now I use Standard Heating for all my HVAC service needs. I also recommended this company to others, including a family member who now needs a new furnace.

Very poor company that uses scare tactics to sell expensive repairs not needed. They are not trustworthy.
Description of Work: I brought them here to fix the air conditioner. He (Jason) immediately looked at my furnace. Then he turned around with a smirk and said that my furnace heat exchanger is cracked and that would carbon monoxide poison. He said that it would cost $806 to repair the furnace, turned off the gas to the furnace and recommended replacing the system. I paid the $99 service fee (he would not give the 10% discount I should get for using Angie's list). I did not believe him (because of the smirk). Next I contacted another vendor from Angie's list about my air conditioner. He immediately looked at the air conditioner. After looking at the air conditioner, I asked him to look at the furnace. He said the furnace looked fine and turned the gas back on. He recommended installing carbon monoxide detectors in the house. I installed high quality carbon monoxide detectors in the house and used the furnace. N sign of carbon monoxide was detected. Later I received scare letter from Standard Heating saying that I needed to replace the furnace (for more than $3000) or else get poison by carbon monoxide. The letter finished by saying that the furnace will have to be replaced at "some time." That is true but it did not have to be replaced then. They are using a marketing scare tactic to sell an expensive furnace.

I was originally surprised to read the member's posting, as he had not shared any of this information with us previously. I called and spoke with the member, and listened to his feedback. Another company had been called out for a second opinion, and they disagreed with our failed heat exchanger diagnosis. This isn't the first time that our work has been double-checked upon, and we have also been called out to offer a second opinion on another company's work. Our policy in these cases is to come out at no additional cost, ideally with the other company present, to show the failure in the heat exchanger to the customer. Historically in these situations, our diagnosis is correct every time. The member declined my offer. We stand by our diagnosis, and have a genuine concern for this customer's well-being.

Standard is likely very good at what they do, but I didn't like the sales process. First they sent an estimator who didn't have an A/C background. They took a lot of my time, but couldn't answer questions, so I had to set up a second appointment which included an A/C professional. The quote came in much higher than the price they advertised in the newspaper and much higher than other quotes I received. I used another contractor.

It is unfortunate that we were unable to serve the member at this time. Our goal is to try to satisfy the needs of all our customers. In this case the member requested that we give him an estimate on replacing his air conditioner and also relocating some existing duct work, plus adding some additional runs. Due to the extent of the modifications requested by the member our sales representative requested that we send out one of our experienced technicians at no cost to the customer to review the options. The option to simply purchase the advertised A/C unit alone is still an option to the member through the end of September 2009.

We contacted three HVAC companies and one utility company for bids to replace our furnace and air conditioner. We chose Standard because of its competitive price, warranties, and the knowledge and professionalism of the sales consultant. We were able to choose the date of installation. We talked with installation crew members and found that each one had a particular area of expertise in the process. The crew was efficient and cleaned up outside and inside when finished. We have used the air so far and found that it does what we wanted: it keeps the temperature very even between the two floors of our split-entry home, whereas before the lower level was much cooler than the upstairs when the air was on. We recommend Standard Heating and Air Conditioning.

This is a rebuttal to the below company response. Their response is patently false. First off, I'm not sure what the discussion about the rebate has to do with the problem of the air-conditioner. Secondly, Standard Heating has not been out to our home one time this summer but THREE TIMES and have not fixed the problem! As far as finding filters in supply vents, that is but a smoke screen re: the issue. Those filters were in vents on BOTH the first floor and the second floor. If that was the problem, then BOTH the first and second floor would not be cooling. That was never the case- the first floor has always been fine- it is the second floor that is not cooling. And what about the other 2 times they came out? The upstairs still does not cool. I have had 2 separate heating and cooling companies come out and tell me Standard Heating put an insufficient sized central air conditioner in for the size of my home. Their contract I signed with them on 6/27/08 specifically states "a 2 year 100% satisfaction guarantee." If you don't believe it I am happy to fax you a copy of that contract. In the meantime my family has gone a full summer of being uncomfortable and not getting any sleep on warm nights because the a/c doesn't function properly. After 3 times, I'm not going to waste my time some more having them come out again blindly hoping to luck into an answer. I'm not sure I understand the issue- the contract I signed with them guaranteed my satisfaction- I'm not satisfied! End of story- unless they aren't going to live up to the contract, which is fraud. One thing I do know is that I will have a functioning air conditioner in this home before the next hot weather comes. It is my understanding that the rebates from the government for purchasing a new a/c ends soon. Without my refund from Standard Heating I cannot afford to buy another air conditioner. If they continue to jack me around and not live up to their written contract, I can promise them I will sue them not only for the cost of the air- but also the cost of the lost rebate. With the contract I have with them, they cannot possibly not lose in such litigation. Moreover, I would think they would want to fulfill the terms of this contract so they don't burn up their rating with Angie's List and be in the penalty box, which I'm sure would greatly harm them for future business. For an honest company, this should be a no-brainer decision.
Description of Work: They put in a new air conditioner last year. The contract says customer satisfaction guaranteed 2 years. I am not satisfied. The air conditioner does not work properly and does not cool the upstairs of my 2 story house. they have been out several times and have been yanking my chain. they have suggested several options none of which have worked. I have had 2 other companies come out and tell me the unit is undersized. I told them that I was not satisfied and that I wanted them to come out take the air conditioner back and return my money so I can have another company install a new air conditioner and they won't.

We installed a new air conditioner at the member’s home on July 8, 2008. On June 22, 2009, the member called to request a utility rebate that he had not received. The call was turned over to the Sales Manager to respond to his request. After reviewing the original bid and contract, it was determined that the member purchased an air conditioner model that did not qualify for the utility rebate; and, therefore, did not have one owed to him. The sales manager informed the member of the facts and offered to send the original copies for review. On June 25, 2009, the member called to tell us that the air conditioner was not cooling properly and that he was not satisfied, as a result. In response to this call, the Sales Manager and our most experienced technician met the member at his home on July 6, 2009 to examine the situation. It was discovered, at that time, that individual filters had been placed in the supply vents, which restricted the air flow throughout the home. We asked for and received permission to remove the filters resulting in immediate airflow improvement. Since this particular day was a cooler summer day, we offered to come back on a hotter day to reassess the cooling of the home once more. We have made efforts to contact the member to arrange for this visit, but he has not responded. We have been, and will continue to be of service to the member. - Scott Pearson, Sales Manager

I contact Standarad Heating & Cooling to get a quote on a new furnace. The appointment comes and Dennis never showed. I called the office and spoke with Tim (I believe that was his name) and he told me that Dennis had "retired unexpectedly" and that he left me a message. Not only did Dennis not leave a message, but neither he, nor the company called to try to reschedule. And while talking with Tim yesterday, he offered an apology but made no effort to try to reschedule in a timely fashion. It was only after I pushed a bit that I could get an appointment this week. I ended up canceling the appointment, because I really couldn't see myself wasting the time or money with a company that isn't go to give prompt service or make an effort to mix their mistake.
