Overall, the experience was excellent. Everyone involved in the process was very nice and we felt comfortable with the level of service. The tech, salesperson, and installer all seemed honest and low pressure. They seemed truly interested in our needs and were not looking to add any costs or sell us something we didn't need. Standard seems like a great company with integrity. The AC is working great and I would highly recommend Standard. They also seem to be competive with pricing.
Description of Work: Needed a new AC. At first a technician came to repair the AC, but the compressor was shot. He recommended that a sales person come to give an estimate for a new AC. He also said the $99.00 service call would be applied to the cost of a new AC if we chose to use Standard. The salesperson arrived the next day and took us through new AC options. He did a preliminary inspection of our house and came up with the best options. He also told us about the energy tax credit and what applied and what did not. They had a form that gets sent to Xcel and we will get an energy rebate. We chose the AC he recommended (also the cheapest option) and the installer came out the next day to put in the new AC. He was also very good. He put cloth down in the house so he would not get the carpet dirty. He also informed us of all the work he needed to do and showed us what he did. They took the old AC away and cleaned up the work areas.

On Monday morning at 12:30AM I awoke to a noxious smell throughout the house...strongest coming out of heating vents. I went to the basement to look at the furnace...noticed odd flashing of status lights which indicated main power wires swapped. I also witnessed bright orange flashes through window intermittently which was not normal. I turned off blower which I have on all the time and water immediately flowed out from under the furnace. The blower also sounded like it had water in it. I took covers off, but did not see much since it was not well lit. Lots of wiring in front of the blower motor. The next day I called another company and they said they would check the schedule to see if anyone was free. I had to call them back after a couple of hours and we couldn't mesh schedules to come out for two days. I then called Standard Heating who immediately checked for availability of a tech and found one that could come out within the next two hours. He would call me when he was a half hour out. He called and was maybe 10 minutes from my house. I left work, met him at home where he had already diagnosed the problem...a burnt digital control board and associated wiring harness from a plugged drain hose from up above. Water had leaked down and was dripping on the circuit card shorting it out. He called the office with parts needed and told me he would get back to me that day with the estimate. I paid $99 for the service call which I had no problem paying since they came out immediately. David, the technician, got back to me the next morning apologizing for not getting back to me sooner, but had problems with Lennox getting back to them since they are not an authorized dealer. He told me the price would be $425 and it would take a couple of days to get the parts in. Jenny called me the next day to arrange a time for David to come back for the repair. Another phone call from Tim a few minutes later stated that they received the wrong wiring harness and had to reorder from Lennox. The new part was special to my furnace and was $200 more. He told me they would eat the $200 since they had already quoted me $425 if I would agree to pay for the three visit service package at $195. I was going to do that anyway so I agreed. They were really apologetic in the increase in price and the part difficulty. I was called on Wednesday afternoon, the part would be in and on David's truck the next day. I told him my husband would be home after 10 but I wasn't sure when and Tim decided early afternoon would work since they were not sure exactly when the part would be in that afternoon. I got a call from Jenny at a little after 10 on Thursday that David was there and no one was answering. I apologized and told her that my husband wasn't home yet and she said maybe David would wait. I called my husband's cell and he was just being picked up by Metro Mobility and would be home within a half hour probably. I did not call Standard back. My husband called me later...David had waited close to an hour. He was in and out in no time fixing the furnace and tuning up the A/C. I appreciated the calls, the by David, Tim and Jenny to keep me informed and to schedule the repair. AND they still gave me the $15 off from their Angies List coupon. What could have been an $825 service call was only $610. I was totally happy with the response, service and integrity of all involved.
Description of Work: Diagnosed reason for burning smell coming from furnace, ordered parts and repaired furnace. Did A/C tune up.

My central air unit stopped running and I didn't know what the problem was. I called in the morning and they were able to send someone out that afternoon. Nathan was the technician and he was excellent. I felt very confident in his work. He was professional, polite, informative, and thorough. Overall I could not be more pleased with my experience with this company.
Description of Work: Replaced the capacitor on my central air unit. Also cleaned and tested to ensure everything would function like it should going forward. Prior to cleaning the unit, it was drawing 11 amps and afterwards it was down to 8 amps.

The sales representative's presentation was detailed and informative. He explained what would take place on the day of installation. The installers arrived on time. They used covers to protect my carpet and cleaned up thoroughly when they were finished. They were friendly and pleasant and answered the few questions I had. The final cost was exactly the amount that was quoted. This was my second experience with this company. I would use them again if I needed to replace any HVAC equipment.

I would rate the interactions that I had with the sales/office with an F grade, but the actual installation of the furnace as an A. I had quite a bit of trouble with the salesperson. She was not aware of different venting options. They measured the basement incorrectly and that resulted in my having to have a different vent when the installer came. I had trouble getting information with warranty registration. As far as the office goes, I had a lot of trouble getting the rebate. In regards to the installation of the furnace, everything went very well. They did a very good job.

We apologize that we did not live up to your expectations on your recent installation and have reviewed your concerns in an attempt to bring you some satisfaction. Regrettably our sales representative was not familiar with the specific installation requirements you requested to prevent insects, namely bees, from entering the venting system. We have since trained her along with retraining the rest of our staff on this unique venting option. Regarding the rebates for installing energy efficient equipment, the utility companies normally take 6-8 weeks to turn them around. In this case we have requested the utility company put a rush on processing them for you. Please feel free to contact us if you have any other concerns.

We really liked our salesman. They were able to quickly replace our furnace when it started making a horrible grinding noise. They cleaned everything up wonderfully! When we were having trouble with the balance of heat between our two levels, they did a free service call to help us adjust the vents and dampers.

We moved into our home a few months back and discovered only recently that the AC was not cooling properly. The techician came out and diagnosed the problem and gave an estimate. It did cost $174 for this as he had to cut into ductwork to find the valve that was causing the problem. He gave us the alternative of proceeding or calling Home Service Plus (Centerpoint Energy) who we had a contract with for home repairs. He said it was worth asking them first before proceeding. When I discovered it was not covered I called back (tech gave me his cell phone) and had him order the part. They called back in one day and were able to install it the same afternoon! From the initial visit to the follow up call, both the office and the tech were 100% professional. He even said to call him if in the future the fix he made didn't keep the house cool enough and he would credit the repair he made toward a new compressor if it was needed. This was great and give me confidence that this company is not cheating us, but really looking out for our best interest as well. We've used them before and will again!

On 3/16/2010 I called Standard regarding a problem with my 30 + year old furnace; a burning smell and other issues. A technician named Seth came to my house the following day. He discovered the furnace was emitting high levels of carbon monoxide and immediately shut off power to the unit. Due to the age of the furnace we determined it was time to install a new unit. Seth explained everything to my satisfaction and arranged to have a sales person come to my house that afternoon. The sales person, Arla, evaluated my requirements and proposed options for me to review. I selected a new unit and it was installed on 3/19/2010. Thomas arrived right on time, removed the old furnace and installed the new unit. Thomas had to contact an electrician to install the thermostat and that was also done the same day. Everyone I encountered at Standard was professional, prompt and very courteous. A special thank you to the technician, Seth. I foolishly did not have my carbon monoxide detector active, the outcome could have been deadly. I highly recommend this company.

We had a technician come out and do an evaluation of the old furnace which was dripping water and making clicking noises. He explained the problem and did a temporary fix, but it had already gone several years past its life expectancy, and he arranged to have a sales representative come over the same day. He measured the house, counted heat runs and cold air returns and recommended that we replace the furnace and the airconditioner and humidifier. ( they were all well beyond the general life expectancy.) He did a detailed repiort of costs, rebates, and energy costs for a few models and explained payment options. We decided to go with particular models and he called the office and set it up for the next business day. We also got a credit for the service call that started the whole process. The installers were there exactly when they said they would be and finished exactly as it was estimated. They were thorough, polite, knowledgable, competent and respectful. The entire process was handled with great care and professionalism and we had a great experience.

When I called for the repair at 7am, they were able to get to the house within about an hour or so and repaired the furnace within 45 minutes. It was a VERY cold day, so this was important, and they did not charge emergency service for this. Once the furnace was working, we knew we had to do a replacement (due to the furnace being about 20 years old). So they met with me later that day so that I could choose a replacement. They offered three very good options at different price points. Once I selected the furnace I wanted, they were able to set up installation for the next day! They were ontime for the installation and they worked fast and efficiently. They also did a great job of cleaning up and taking all the old furnace parts with them. They did a great, and fast job. After installation, the city found a few things that needed to be changed. They were very quick to call to set up an appointment to remedy those things. I recommend this company!

We use Standard Heating for our annual checkup as our furnace was 12 years old. They have always been very professional and prompt. I am nosy and they never mind me asking lots of questions. When they came to do the inspection ( later this year because i kept forgetting to call) they discovered that the furnace was leaking CO. On further inspection, they discovered that the primary and secondary exchanger were cracked. The repair bill would have been over $1000. We decided to go ahead and replace the furnace. They were available to come that afternoon and probably could have replaced the furnace that day had I not insisted on getting a second bid. John came to the house and was VERY thorough. He explained everything in great detail (discovered that our current furnace was too big), explained all the advantages of getting a newer, higher efficiency furnace (tax rebates!!) and spelled out exactly what I would be purchasing including a new air cleaner and new thermostat. I decided to go with Standard even though their bid was $150 higher than the other bid because of my previous relationship with them and because of John's detailed proposal. There was a small misunderstanding about the amount of time it would take to install the furnace mostly due to my lack of sleep and trying to figure out what to do with an infant and no heat . They were very prompt the following morning and the furnace was working by 3:30-4pm that day. They sent the inspection information along and everything passed with flying colors.

Standard Heating concluded that the problem we were having (of not being able to keep the pilot light lit) was due to a weak thermocouple or a bad gas valve, and suggested that we try replacing the thermocouple first. We had previously replaced the thermocouple in December 2007 through another company, and also had Standard Heating come out for a service call in November 2009. In November, Standard Heating's technician could not determine a cause for the draft switch that had been tripped (which caused the heat to go out). The total price to replace the thermocouple was $300 ($139 for the trip charge, and the rest for parts and labor). The price seems excessive, considering the thermocouple itself doesn't cost much, and the total labor was less than 15 minutes. Unfortunately, I felt pressured because I wanted heat back in the house. I also wonder if the technician should have tested and replaced the thermocouple back in November, saving me another trip charge.

We are sorry to hear that the member was less than enthusiastic about the service provided to him by our company. I would like to clarify a couple of the member’s points. Our technician was on site for 37 minutes, not 15, he fixed the problem, and the total cost to the member was $284, $139 of which was our standard boiler service charge. All prices were shared with this customer before any action was taken, which is in line with our “Up Front” pricing policy. We here at Standard Heating and Air Conditioning strive to be competitively priced in this market and we have done so by regularly comparing our competition’s pricing for 80 years now. We also guarantee parts and labor for one year for all of our repairs. We look forward to another 80 years of conducting business in a fair and professional manner in the Minneapolis/St. Paul market.

We called them 3pm Monday to request an estimate. Their sales rep, Arla, was available for a 5:30 appt. She was excellent at educating us about our heating needs, what parts needed to be changed to bring up to code, etc. It was very clear to us what needed to be done, why, and how much it would all cost. We collected two other estimates (reviewed under their companies), and elected to have Standard do the job for two reasons: lowest cost, and our confidence that they will not only stand behind their work, but also do the job right; not cut corners. The team arrived on Wednesday morning, on time, and started to work right away. They were very nice, professional, and explained everything. They were able to complete the job much faster than we expected, and to a VERY high caliber. -- would recommend Standard's work to anybody in need -- would use again.

We called Standard Heating because our heat did not turn off when it reached the temperature on the thermostat. We had used them before and were very pleased with the company then. Today, the technician called and said he was running early and if I minded if he came earlier than was quoted when I made appointment. The technician tried to get the system to replicate the problem we had for the past two days. Unfortunately, everything was operating perfectly. He checked the boiler and the thermostat. He stated that it could be the thermostat or something in the furnace. He discussed that the cheapest and easiest thing to do would be to replace our very old thermostat. He quoted the price of the thermostat and mentioned the "call out" fee of $99. He also stated that if the thermostat was not the problem, they would come back and get the problem fixed and I would not have to pay the "call out" fee. He replaced the thermostat, asked if I wanted a wall plate to hide the wall area the old thermostat was--Isaid yes but when the plate did not cover the area--he took it off, peeled away the wall paper that was behind the old thermostat and cleaned up any mess made. He asked if we wanted to keep the old thermostat (pointing out it had mercury in it) and then took it to properly dispose of it. He then showed me how to use the new thermostat. He was very polite and professional. When I mentioned we had found the company on Angie's List, he mentioned that there might be a coupon to be used for today's service. I appreciate that!

Standard did a fantastic job. It began with the estimate. I had to replace my old furnace because an internal coil was cracked. There was some sense of urgency because the really cold weather was arriving in a couple days. I was told by some companies that I'd have to wait over a week for an estimate! Standard came out the next day. John Ruddy was their sales person. I was so impressed with him, that I made the decision to use Standard on the spot. Their pricing was great. In one case, their price was $1,500 less that one of their competitors. They scheduled the job immediately and in 4 days, I had a new system. Their people were courteous. They did a great job protecting the house from damage and did a fantastic cleanup job. They delivered what they promised when they promised it. I would highly recommend Standard!!

Repair tech was on time, careful about tracking, neat, respectful of home. Repair was completed quickly -- less than 30 minutes. Recommended annual maintenance to prevent future problem. Nothing particularly wrong with service, but I would have liked more thorough information and results regarding everything else the tech checked on the furnace to discover the problem. $174.00 is small in comparison to frozen pipes, but $174.00 is quite a bit for 30 minutes.
