They were the highest recommended in Angie's List and they certainly lived up to their recommendation. Excellent experience, very nice, very professional. The Estimator even came on the day of the install with donuts for my mother. They sat and had coffee. How could we not? Outstanding punctuality. They were right there when they said they would be there. They were just so on-the-ball, it was really something.

I asked Standard to do three bids for me: geothermal, heat pump and conventional. They were very thorough in the evaluation and estimation process. I expected that the geothermal would be too expensive for me and it was. There is a great tax credit for geothermal, but it would still be a lot of money to spend at one time (approx $30,000). I asked MANY questions of my sales rep (Kellie) and she was great about answering them all. I opted for a heat pump with a gas furnace backup. This gives me full house AC as well as being more energy efficient for heating. The installation took less than a day and was very nicely done. They even patched a hole in my ductwork that had been made by a duct cleaing company. All of the people that I dealt with at Standard were great. Even though their price was higher than the other companies who bid, I like the fact that they have been in business so long and stand behind their work. I know if I have a problem in the middle of a cold January night, Standard will be there to help me. One tip that I got from a different vendor was to spend money on additional insulation rather than geothermal. That was a great suggestion, and I ended up doing that too.
Description of Work: It was time to replace my 28 year old gas furnace. I have forced air heat and used a room air conditioner in my bedroom. My house was built in 1917. It was originally heated with coal, then oil, then gas.

The Angies ad said a furnace cleaning and tune up for $74. At times the flame on our furnace would not start. The first person that came out cleaned the system and checked it out saying that since I was having some previous problems and now it had been corrected, there would be an additional $105 charge for repairs even though no parts were replaced. After he left the same problem came back so a second person came out. He found that the first guy had not cleaned some little port that was plugged up. He cleaned it out with a vacuum cleaner and everything has been fine since - no charge for the second visit. So a $74 service turned into a $170 service with no parts replaced. Not what I thought the Angies special promotion advertised.

I pay $15.70/month which covers 2 furnace check-ups and 1 A/C checkup each year. averages about $60/visitJason is the tech that usually comes to the house. It's nice seeing the same face. Standard sends out postcards to remind me when the service is due. If I don't make an appt, they give me a call.Jason arrived on schedule and checked out both the A/C and the furnace. He did a 14 point tune-up on both. He also checked the water heater to make sure the CO was venting properly. He makes sure all my questions are answered.I've been using Standard heating for over 25 years and have had no issues with them.

It went pretty smoothly. The salesman was very chatty, so the initial visit took 90 minutes. The price was $800 cheaper than both of the other quotes we received and had better-rated stuff, so we went with them. We were able to schedule it for whenever we liked, which was convenient, though we didn't get a follow-up call confirming the date and time, which had us a little concerned that the date wasn't firm. They did show up when the salesman originally told us they would, and they were done in just a few hours! They also installed our new thermostat for us. They left the utility room pretty clean. Overall, I'm pretty happy with how it turned out.

We had been warned by the gas company (Home Service Plus) that the next time we called them to repair our 50-yr-old furnace, they might not be able to do so, as the parts weren't even made anymore. Also, it was only about 50% efficient, meaning half the heat produced was going up the chimney! I contacted 4 companies to get quotes for a new furnace. Mike from Standard Heating was the most informative, laid out the choices most clearly, and was quick to respond to every email. All of the companies had prices, discounts, and rebates that were similar, but Standard Heating was a little cheaper, and because of the extra information and wide range of choices that they offered, I was able to use my limited funds to purchase not only a furnace but also the ultimate luxury- Air conditioning! On the day of installation, I had one guy, Dave, as a point of contact from start to finish - He was the first one there in the morning and the last to leave at the end. He explained exactly the work that was being done, and he looked over everything with me before leaving. When I contacted them afterward with a complaint about the furnace being too noisy, their expert, Jeff, came over right away, diagnosed the problem, and within two weeks had fixed it by adding another air return in a different spot. Yesterday the City of Mpls inspector came and signed off on the inspection, telling me that he thinks very highly of their work. I do too!
Description of Work: Replaced old furnace with a brand-new one. Installed a chimney cap. Installed new central air conditioner. 1 month later, responded to my complaint of noise, diagnosed the problem and Installed new air return.

The Technician reported that the motherboard had failed and it could be replaced or a new furnace would have to be installed. The Tech gave us a quote for the parts and labor. The Service Technician then followed up with Standard Heating's main office and gave us a Sales Representatives contact number. The Sales Representative met with us today, Sunday 4/22/12. We decided to purchase a new furnace because ours was 16 years old and newer technology was available. The installation is scheduled for Tuesday, April 24th, 2012. More to come regarding the installation.
Description of Work: The reason that I did not have a cost for the service call is because we have a monthly service plan with Standard Heating. I have purchased 2 furnaces from Standard. One in a home we previously owned and the furnace i am reporting about now, which is 16 years old. The furnace stopped working on a Thursday night. I called Standard Friday morning. They returned my call and were able to have a Service Technician to my house at 3 pm Friday afternoon to diagnose and evaluate the problem.

It’s a super company. They come out three times a year, and they get my air conditioning ready, they get my furnace ready, and then the third time, they get my entire heating system ready. If I need a good company, then I got to spend a few bucks. They are expensive, but they are the greatest. It’s seldom one can find a company like that. In terms of price, some people look for the lowest price, and I am seventy five years old, and I have learned over the years that’s probably a mistake. I think they have been in business since 1935 or 1936. I would definitely use them again in the future.

The staff at Standard Heating and Air have been professional and were willing to work around my work schedule. They gave a cost up front and stuck to it.
Description of Work: My gas furnace was working intermittently. Standard heating and air sent out a technician first thing the next day and found the flame sensor was dirty so the technician cleaned it. I also had them perform a tune-up at this point. The furnace worked for a couple weeks and then began working intermittently again. Standard heating and air sent out a technician (for free) to take another look. This time the technician replaced the hot surface igniter. The furnace has worked fine since.

We had Standard come out and do routine service on our furnace and central air. I've had other companies do the same, but Standard did the most through and professional job I can recall. And they didn't try to sell me any new equipment even though our existing equipment is getting on in years! Nathan, the service tech, even pointed out how I can replace the igniter myself, since the existing one is nearing the end of it's service life.

I returned home from work, and the furnace had not been started by the set-back thermostat. After checking a few things, I consulted Angie's List, and contacted Standard Heating. I was informed of the emergency fee upfront, and decided to have them come out that evening. I talked to Tom, and he had me check a couple of things to make sure he needed to make the service call. When it was determined that he would need to, he gave me an eta of an hour. He arrived on time, and went to work. After looking my furnace over, he advised me on the benefit of purchasing a maintenance contract rather than the hourly rate. It seemed a logical plan,as I had purchased the house only a couple of years earlier, so I told him I would take the contract. I left him to his work, and about an hour later, he had the furnace running. He said he had checked it over, and everthing was in good order. He stayed long enough for the furnace to cycle a couple of times, I paid the bill, and he left. The furnace has not missed a beat since. I was completely satisfied, Tom was very professional in manner and performance. I would use them again, and recommend them highly.

Description of Work: We called Standard to get a quote on a new air exchanger motor for our heating/cooling system within the house, the technician that arrived was right on time (x2), put on booties to not track in our house, was independent in evaluating what we needed, came to use quickly with a quote that beat everyone else and they ordered the part and it was installed within a matter of days. Excellent service and they will be providing our service in the future.

The tech examined the furnace and found no noise and no potential source for the noise, suggesting that it my have been due to a dirty filter that I had changed the day before. He completed a thorough furnace check and cleaned the burners, explaining what he was doing and why, explaining how the furnace, sensors, and safety systems worked. He used a scope to examine the inside of the heat exchanger and found hairline cracks. He said that the furnace should be OK for this season but recommended either replacing the heat exchanger or getting a new furmace before the next heating season, and provided an estimate for the heat exchanger and a general price range for new furnaces. He was very professional, punctual, and informative and provided options and approximate costs. If I choose to replace the furnace, a rep will come out at no cost to explain options and pricing.

The good news is they fixed the radiator problem by fixing a leaky valve and the techniciam was here just over one hour. For that effort, we were charged over $600. There was no estimate provided by the technician once he identified the problem, and he clearly had us on the hook once he fixed it. I called their customer service to inquire about why this fee was so high, and have never gotten a straight answer....except to say that they have fixed fees for certain problem areas and maybe this technician was really fast and therefore completed the job quickly. I was promised a $100 refund by the customer service agent -- and a free furnace tune-up -- and have received nothing. So not only are their prices mysterious, but they don't follow through on their commitments. I am not sure what other company can charge $600 an hour for its services. I will be looking for a different furnace maintenance provider.
Description of Work: We hired Standard because we were not getting heat out of our upstairs radiators. During the service call, we also asked them to do a furnace tune-up. This is the company we had hired to update our air conditioning system and their work for that job was competitively priced. We have boiler/radiator heat so the air conditioning system is a little complex.

Description of Work: Furnace stopped working in the middle of the night and we had no heat. Called Standard Heating in the morning and was able to get an appt for that afternoon. Nathan was very nice and professional. He determined that it was our thermostat and loose wiring. Reconnected the thermostat wire correctly, as well as tested the furnace for carbon monoxide and cleaned the flame sensor. Such a relief that the furnace was working and did not need to be replaced. And a really great feeling knowing Nathan checked everything over and the furnace is functional and functioning safely.

Very professional and polite. Wouldn't hesitate to call again.
Description of Work: After reading the Angie's List reviews, I called Standard Heating to repair my furnace. I called around 10:00 in the morning and was able to get an appointment for that afternoon. The appointment was set for between 2:00 and 6:00. The technician (Nathan) arrived at 3:30 and got right to work after I gave him the error code from the furnance. He answered my questions and explained to me what he was doing while he was servicing the furnance. Nathan wore booties over his shoes while he worked (which I totally appreciated) and even brought in the newspaper from outside. When he noticed 2 screws missing from the furnace, he found some in his tool kit and replaced them. How's that for service!? Cost breakdown: $99 flat rate for service call 25 for work (minimum charge)

Avoid this company at all costs. In May, 2011, while installing a new furnace in my home, they damaged my air conditioner so badly it had to be replaced. They wired the new a/c improperly, causing $1,000 of damage to my home and my wife barely escaped injury when their wiring short-circuited. Two electricians from separate companies both identified Standard Heating as the cause of the problems and testified to this in court. They are a very disreputable company and you are at risk if you use them.

We found them to be an ecomonical service, got an Angies List discount too. Their reputation as reliable and honest company was well worth any cost. I was nice knowing they wanted to provide use with a value based service and not just try to get us to buy a new furnance. Definitely a KEEPER.
Description of Work: Gas furnace burners failed to start / burn (intermittent problem too). The furnace is 16 years old and we feared the furnance would need to be replaced, something we thought any company providing the service would recommmend, The pecific cause of the problem was quickly diagnosed by the service technician, as he'd seen this same problem on other units from the same manufacturer. The technician provided a couple options for resolution and some rough cost estimates for each, neither of which included replacing the furnace. After reviewing the options with the technician, he quickly implemented the preferred fix and restored the furnace to a fully operational state.
