I called to schedule an in home estimate for new thermostat install. I have a 1940s home and I'm pretty sure the thermostat is original, if not, very "vintage" Honeywell. It has not been reading the temperature right lately and is finicky in adjustments and I'd like some 21st century features so time for a new one! The scheduler told me that it would cost $99 for the "service call" and then they would give me an estimate on how much the new thermostat and install would cost. I was a little floored by this. I'm used to free in home estimates for new installations. I have an old house, I've never worked with this company before, and I would like to know what the overall cost would be to install a new thermostat and if my current system is compatible or if I'd need to hire an electrician to update it prior to installation. The problem with this is, if they had come out, told me I needed a lot of electrical work done and/or quoted me an astronomical number for the install/new thermostat I would have said "have a nice day" and paid them $99 for doing essentially nothing. Why would I pay $99 to potentially have nothing done? The free in home estimate if a chance for them to show me they know what they're doing and they have good prices and can help me. If these conditions are met, I agree to pay for services. If I were going to spend THOUSANDS on a new air conditioner or furnace, I could see this being a justified expense, but I'm only going to be spending a few hundred dollars max, so the $99 becomes quite large in proportion to the likely cost of the work. I understand free in home estimates could involve paying a technician to go all over the place and get little money in return if the customer does not choose to have services performed, but this seems like the "price of doing business" to me. But I'm not a businessman so maybe I'm way off. I'm going to call in a smaller company that I have worked with before, hopefully they work out better.

We appreciate all feedback from potential customers. We offer free in-home estimates for system replacement (furnaces, boilers, central air conditioners). Like most heating and air conditioning companies, we charge a flat-rate diagnostic fee ($99) for all service/repair requests. I originally contacted this provider after noticing water on the floor beneath my furnace. They responded quickly and set up a date to come out and evaluate the problem. Seth arrived promptly and was very nice. However, he only spent about 10 seconds, if that looking at and around the furnace area where the leak was located. I explained to him all that I'd noticed and all that I'd done. Seth felt that the leak was probably caused by coils in my A/C freezing up due to low refrigerant. He asked if my A/C seemed to cool and I told him yes I hadn't had any problems with that since I had refrigerant added a few years ago. After checking my A/C Seth determined it was low on refrigerant and most likely had a leak which caused coils to freeze up and as they melted left water on the floor. When I asked him why this would continue to leak after the A/C had not been running for days he had no answer. My options were to add refrigerant at a cost of $250. plus service fee, or he could run some more tests to determine where the leak of refrigerant was happening which would cost more, over $1000. or replace my A/C for $3000.-$5000. I opted for the least costly of the options, Seth added refrigerant, told me to monitor and call if I had more problems. There was no change in the leaking/puddling of water the A/C was working fine but it was working fine before also. I messaged Standard heating and Air through Angies list telling them I wasn't sure what I should even do, there was absolutely no change in my problem and now I was out $350. The company responded, telling me that they saw that Seth had come to my home and diagnosed a rusted out drain pain. I asked them how exactly did he diagnose this when he only spent approximately10 seconds by my furnace and never opened or looked at anything, I was standing beside him. The company then told me they would be happy to come back and diagnose the problem. when I told them I didn't really care to spend another $100. for them to come do what I already paid them to do they assured me this time there would be no charge. I decided to pay another company a service call to come out and give me a 2nd opinion on the situation. The new company spent over half an hour checking my entire system out, for half the cost AND they managed to diagnose that the leak was actually coming from my hot water heater, And it was just the grade in my floor causing the leak to drain towards the furnace and given the age of my A/C they too had the initial thought of coils freezing up and low refrigerant, however by taking the extra time and ruling things out they came were able to help me. Although my refrigerant may have been low the things I told Seth should have had him investigate further, the fact that the A/C hadn't been on for over a week, and that I hadn't had any problems with my house cooling when the A/C was running. The company telling me my drain pan was rusted out when nobody had actually looked at a drain pan was what made me not want this company back. The only reason I am not giving them a complete F on all marks is because Seth was very nice, just not very thorough, and they do respond and come out as asked but they charge twice what others charge for a service call and the service call only includes them arriving at your door, it doesn't include any time diagnosing a problem.
Description of Work: Added refrigerant to A/C unit. Total time spent at home 15 minutes.

The service technician was very personable and professional. He arrived a bit later in the evening than expected, but was within tolerance so not a big deal. Reason for service call: The fan for my HVAC system was not running with my A/C unit, resulting in non-cooling of the house. The tech correctly identified the problem, which was the circuit board that controls the fan was shorting out. He provided me a couple of solutions which included a) replacing the circuit board @ around $300 or b) a short-term workaround which enabled the fan until I replaced the entire unit (due to it being 18 years old and having a crack in the heat exchanger - which he identified also). These seemed reasonable options and I appreciated the tech giving me the choice and not only telling me I needed to spend $300. I chose the latter option as it made sense to put the $300 towards a new furnace, instead of investing it in one that will be replaced next season. That said, while he correctly diagnosed the problem, he did not identify the cause of the problem. I had my own theory before he arrived, but dismissed it due to his explanation. A week or so after his visit, I had cause to resurrect my theory as the original problem resurfaced...no cooling in the house. After doing my own investigation, I determined the A-coil drain was leaking, causing water to drip down into the furnace and onto the circuit board, causing it to short out and the fan not to run and distribute the cool air throughout the house. I corrected the leak and voila!......no more problems. Haven't had an issue since then (almost two months ago). So while the technician did a great job on identifying the problem, 'tuning' (a bit of a misnomer) the A/C, and cleaning the A/C, he didn't identify the cause of the problem, which resulted in it occurring again. Had I spent $300 on a new circuit board, I would have wasted my money. Thankfully I did not as I ended up resolving the problem myself. It is for that reason I give a grade of 'B'. Service was generally good, but diagnostic skills could be a bit keener. Maybe it was just a long day and it was catching up to him. But I'm paying money, so I expect accurate work. I would recommend their company, but as always - be a wise and vigilant consumer. It's your money.

I recently purchased my home and the outside condenser on the A/C wasn't working. Standard Heating and Air came out and found out that the power to the outside condenser wasn't hooked up to the electric box, due to a remodel that happened prior to me buying the house. The technician got me hooked back up with a working A/C in under an hour. He had to use a special tool to grab the power cable that was behind the wall/ceiling to pull it through and connect it to the electric box. He also checked out the blower unit and ensured it was working properly. Overall I was very happy with my service. The technician was on time and very professional. I would definitely contact Standard Heating and Air should I need them again in the future.

According to my husband, who was home when they sent someone to fix our air conditioning, the person was very professional, knowledgeable, and patient. He answered many questions from my husband and provided lots of information in terms of air conditioner maintenance. I was home when they sent someone to tune up the furnace. This person was also professional and knowledgeable. I had many questions too, and he also answered with great patience. He provided information about furnace maintenance as well. Their charge really isn't the lowest, but the service quality is superb.

Installed Bryant two stage furnace and wireless thermostat. Always impressed with the thorough estimate and service offered by Standard Heating. Steve previously gave me an estimate when I had my AC replaced two years ago. That time, I went with a lower estimate. This time around, Standard offered the best pricing. Only hiccup was the installation of the wireless thermostat. Took a couple of extra visits to get it working properly. I was still impressed they were able to find a solution even though my existing thermostat had fewer wires than typically needed for wireless. If considering AC or furnace replacement, definitely include Standard in your estimates. High level of service and expertise.

Simple repairs and maintenance for the main system were done OK, although on a pricey side. Tech gave an estimate for a major repair to a second HVAC system: 800$ to replace a circuit board and a blower. Some weeks later a handyman happened to be at my place doing something else and looked into it. He replaced a capacitor for 50$ parts and labor and the system has been working ever since.

Work provided was satisfactory but be aware that they charge a flat fee for refrigerant to the tune of $250 no matter if you need 1/2 or 5 lbs. If I would have known this ahead of time I would have taken my business elswhere as most of their competitors charge a (much more fair) per pound rate which is significantly cheaper especially if you only have a very small leak. At the end of the day, a simple AC recharge cost me twice as much as similiar (and equally high rated) shops on Angie's list. When I called in and brought this to their attention their response was "Let me sell you another $200 maitenance plan and Ill throw in some free sealant." If I would have gone with one of the other highly-rated competitors I would already have the sealant and recharge done for the very same $350.

This customer called after he had agreed to the service call and air conditioner refrigerant recharge service charges, wanting to know if we'd offer him a reduction in price prior to the publishing of his yet to be written Angie's List review. We choose to have an up-front/flat rate pricing model for a number of reasons. First and foremost, we believe that giving our customers an exact, up-front price on all repairs is the best practice. We have used this pricing model for many years, and our customers have demanded the same service from our competitors, and many have followed our lead. We constantly shop our competitors to ensure we offer competitive prices, and we strive to ensure lifetime customer loyalty by providing unmatched service and expertise. We believe our prices are both competitive and fair, and reflect the cost of doing business.
