We got proposals from three companies, and felt confident that any of them would do a good job. Earl's Floor Sanding (run now by Todd Anthony) gave us a price between the other two. We chose them over the lowest bidder because of their ability to get the job done more quickly. Todd was very good to work with. We changed our minds several times about the scope of the project and Todd was happy to accommodate our changes as well as some unusual requests we made. He gave us helpful and realistic answers to our many questions, and even gave us advice about a wood kitchen floor we had decided to paint and finish ourselves. The job itself was completed on the schedule Todd had given us (4 1/2 days, start to finish), and the results are beautiful. They had to deal with some difficult issues: the floors had a few tough stains, and in some places were very warped and ripply. All of it was done well, and they did a good job of cleaning up after themselves. The newly finished floors are a little blonder than we thought they would be based on Todd's description, and the sanders left a few marks on the baseboards that we'll need to touch up, but those are minor complaints. Part of the job was replacing two wooden floor vents that were badly broken. They had another shop build the new vents, which ended up costing more than Todd had expected, but he charged us only the original price he had quoted even though it meant a small net loss for them on that part of the project. I would definitely hire Earl's Floor Sanding again.

Every part of our dealings with Earl's floor sanding were a pleasure: Todd (the owner of the business; Earl is his college nickname) returned my initial call promptly, arrived precisely on time for his scheduled appointment, and took an appropriate amount of time to understand my needs and then to do measurements, etc. to prepare an estimate. The work was performed while we were out of town; Todd was very conscientious in keeping in touch with us by phone to let us know about a couple of small discoveries about the condition of the floor underneath the old wall-to-wall carpeting. We arrived home to beautiful "new" 82-year old floors and cannot believe that anyone would ever have covered up these lovely floors! We had one tiny issue that was resolved to my complete satisfaction. Todd overlooked a small service that should have been included in his original bid for a cost of $100. I was surprised when this item was added onto our final bill. In a quick, non-confrontational phone consultation, Todd agreed to split the difference, which I thought was very fair. As soon as we can afford it, we will have Todd and his crew back to uncover and refinish the floor in a second bedroom upstairs. I would recommend Earl's Floor Sanding to anyone who needs hardwood floor sanding, repair or installation.
Description of Work: Earl's Floor Sanding removed old wall-to-wall carpeting in my 82-year-old home from the stairway to the second floor, central hallway upstairs, and one bedroom. They then sanded, stained and refinished the original oak hardwood floors underneath. They also did repaired the floor in two spots. In the more visible area that was repaired, the new flooring matches the old so precisely that one would never be able to tell that a repair had been performed.

Todd came out and gave us a detailed estimate and discussed options with us. On the days work was scheduled, the crew was punctual. Once they pulled up the carpeting, some problem areas were more visible, like the need to replace some damaged stair treads and flooring. Todd was a great problem solver and even took an extra day to complete the job (three days instead of two) to make sure the work was done right. The floors look like new. They also made sure the spread of dust was kept to a minimum and they did a good job cleaning up after themselves once the project was complete. I'd recommend them to anyone.
Description of Work: Remove and haul away carpeting from two bedrooms, staircase and hallway. Strip and refinish two bedroom floors. Small amount of repair and refinish of hallway. Replace all stair treads and refinish stairs.

These guys are fabulous! Todd and the crew are honest, hard working, conscientious, and as an added bonus they're really nice! We have used them on two separate occasions over the past few months. Initially, we had pulled up some carpeting that was in an upstairs bedroom, went down the stairs, and went into the front hallway and front entry way. The flooring on the 2nd floor is the original birch. The treads and flooring on the stairs and first floor is oak. The stairs and the 2nd floor was pretty straight forward. Todd and his crew did a great job - they came when they said they were going to come, the job took as long as they said it would, they did a nice job containing dust (although these jobs are always dusty), and they cleaned up after themselves. Todd did a great job matching the existing 2nd floor finishes and the floors look fantastic. The front hallway/entry was more challenging as there were linoleum tiles underneath the carpet. Todd and his team removed them and also had to rebuild the floor in several spots in the front entryway. The repairs are flawless and you simply cannot tell the difference between one section that is 100 years old and one that is 4 months old. He also nicely matched the finish between these areas the living room which is immediately adjacent to the front hall. They did such good work on the 1st job that we hired them to come back do to the 2nd, which was a complete tearout of an existing linoleum floor in a kitchen (approximately 260 square feet) and removal of carpet from a family room (approximately 260 square feet) and installation of 1.5" oak strip flooring with an oil-based finish to match the flooring in the rest of the house. Once again, I was glad that we had chosen Todd and his crew. This job was a real mess. It turns out that the house had been remodeled several times over the last 40 years (it is over 100 years old) so the sub-floor in the kitchen was several different heights. Oh, and in some places there was no sub-floor, just plywood. It is amazing that no one fell through the floor! Todd cleaned up the entire floor, made sure that everything was level (or as level as things can possibly be) and did a fabulous installation. The new floors contact the old floors in three separate places and they are exactly level. They look great. The oil finish blends flawlessly with the finish throughout the rest of the house. The only challenge that remains for us is to drop the base-shoe down about 1" because the floors are now a little lower than they once were so none of the trim fits! I would (and already have) recommend Earls to anyone that is interested in having their floors refinished or in having new floors installed. They do great work, are reasonably priced, offer tremendous value and Todd's and everyone on the crew are all really decent guys. I would use them again in an instant - they've gained a customer for life.
Description of Work: The first job involved sanding and refinishing birch strip flooring on the 2nd floor, sanding and refinishing oak treads on the stairway, and sanding, refinishing, and installing some new oak flooring in the front hallway and front entryway.

Quite well. They did the kitchen and dining room while we were out of town, then helped us move furniture from the living room to the dining room and did the living room while we were there for three days. The owner gave good advice about the quality and layers of covering available. We opted for a commercial grade covering in the kitchen because of the high traffic level.

Todd kept me posted on the progress daily. The floors look brand new!!! We were very impressed with how professional the crew was. I would STRONGLY recommend Earl's Floor Sanding.

The service experience with Earl's Floor Sanding was outstanding! The owner responded to my call within one day with a quote. It wasn't the lowest quote we received but the quick-turnaround and detailed presentation made selecting Earl's easy for us. We scheduled the work for Fall 2007. When the Earl's team arrived to sand the floors, we discovered the back hallway area had severe water damage and was a different type of wood from the rest of the home (previously covered with carpet). Earl's team quickly quoted us a reasonable cost to replace the hardwood and matched it to our existing hardwood. The whole process lasted about 2 weeks from start to finish. They refinished the existing floors in about 3 days and returned a week later to install the new section over another 3 days. At the end of the job, the team educated us on the proper care for the floor. We are very happy with our new and newly finished hardwood floors.

A little disappointed, overall. Were going to do it ourselves but hoped to have better outcome with professionals, or not. We had some scheduling issues because of an unexpected long stretch of rain and fitting the job in. They finally came out but didn't review the original estimate and forgot to bring the correct tools/materials to repair the floor. Also neglected to tell me during the estimate that the repair wouldn't match original floor (different species and several pieces instead of one board). But I still gave okay to go ahead with project and sand the porch. Came back in a few days to do the repair but didn't have enough materials, then had to rip down boards and re-sand to get the repaired areas flush with the floor. Didn't realize it until we painted the repaired areas, but the sanding left big trough-like gouges in the porch that are very noticeable with the glossy floor paint, even with the sand added (for traction). Ugh.
Description of Work: Prepped an open porch with hardwood floor so we could paint it, and repaired a few broken floor boards. Had some scheduling issues because of rain and it being an outdoor porch, but Tom was always very proactive in keeping me updated about what was going on. If only the project execution was on par with the pre-project communication. The estimate didn't provide me with as many details as I would have liked, if I had known they repair would have used multiple pieces that needed to be ripped down then sanded, I would have just left the original cracked boards and filled them prior to painting. We ended up with big gouges in our porch floor that weren't that noticeable on bare wood but are pretty obvious now that the porch is painted. The rest of the porch looks great though, and that part went fine. The repair portion of the job is like a big fat fly in a bowl of delicious soup, so it's hard to look past it even if the rest looks great.

RAINY WEATHER AND MISCOMMUNICATION WERE UNFORTUNATELY THE ISSUE HERE. WE TYPICALLY DON'T COMPLETE EXTERIOR PROJECTS. WE MAY AGAIN, BUT IT BECOMES VERY DIFFICULT TO SCHEDULE AND RESCHEDULE NUMEROUS TIMES WE HAD MISCOMMUNICATIONS DUE TO A LANGUAGE BARRIER. ALL ISSUES WERE BROUGHT UP TO OTHER OWNER OF HOUSE, WHICH WEREN'T BROUGHT UP TO HOMEOWNER (A'S LIST MEMBER) WHO GAVE REVIEW. ENTIRE PORCH NEEDED TO BE SANDED TO MAKE IT PERFECT. HOMEOWNER HAD AN OPTION TO DO THIS AND DECIDED TO HAVE US JUST ABRADE OR BUFF IT (IN PREPARATION FOR PAINT) TO SAVE MONEY. DIDN'T RECEIVE ANY FOLLOW UP COMMUNICATION TO MAKE US AWARE OF ANY ISSUES THAT WE COULD HAVE RESOLVED.

We had an excellent experience with Todd and his company. I received immediate attention via a quick scheduling of an estimate and flexibility in meeting my time line for completing the job. Todd was very thorough in his assessment and honest in what a buffing and resurface would offer for a final look vs a complete sanding and refinishing of the floors. I appreciated knowing what level of scratches and marks would be removed or not; appropriate expectations were established. The outcome was excellent, the floor looked great and very clean. In addition to the good work, the clean up was unmatched. There was no dust or residue left from the job. You could not tell someone had been in the home doing extensive work except for the nice looking shine on the floors.

It went OK. There was a lot of old staining on the upper hall and stair treads and a few spots elsewhere. Todd said they could not get them out any better after the first sanding day. Since then I have heard from other people that most likely with a bit more perseverance the stains could have been removed. I don't know for sure but I am left wondering if I should have been "tougher". I'm left a bit disappointed.

Todd was able to come and look at the house on very short notice. His bid was slightly lower than the others I got, but not hugely. He was also able to do the work within my tight schedule constraints. The job did take one day longer than we expected, and I wasn't too clear on why. It was just a slight miscommunication, but overall the floors look great, they didn't leave a mess, and price was exactly what was on the bid.

Todd was informative as to how they would do the job and what the process would be. The work was finished in 2 days, Todd came and rebuffed and added another coat of poly to smooth out the floor and fix a couple of uneven parts. The floors are beautiful. The color flows evenly throughout. I was told by one company that one of the rooms would not be able to have the same coloring because the floor was darker, it hadn't been sanded like the rest of the floors. You can't tell any difference in coloring with the work Earl's flooring did. Todd was very accommodating. The day he came to rebuff the floors, the ducts were being cleaned so he did what he could then came back when they were finished. I would recommend this company to anyone. I had a concern regarding clean up since it is a messy job, but they did a good job on that also.
