It went fine. They just check to make sure it was running appropriately and gave some minor recommendations. I'm using the thermostat in conjunction with this V-unit.

The tech showed up on time and even called to confirm the appointment when he was on his way. We had just bought a house and knew the furnace and A/C would soon need to be replaced as they were both near 20 years old (which is the end of the expected life for those products). The service tech examined the furnace and found cracks in the combustion chamber which could lead to CO leaks or even a fire. The tech advised us not to spend any additional money on the furnace and just to replace it. The tech finished his checkup on the AC and left.

It went well. We were able to call and get an appointment within a couple of days and have it early before I had to go to work. Mike showed up promptly at the scheduled time and was very friendly. He was able to determine the furnace wasn't coming on because the drain tube was clogged and clearing it was part of the service cost. I believe the whole cleaning, testing and the appointment overall was approximately 25 minutes. We asked about AC service off season and Mike said it was available at our choosing and he'd be happy to do it but there were benefits to performing it in the Spring if in fact the system needed a charge. It was nice to have Mike answer all the questions we had and let us decide. I will be calling them again.

Technician Brad showed up on time, greeted me, and went right to work. He did some checks on the inside workings then went outside to check and clean that unit. Brad informed me I would need about a pound of refrigerant to balance my system. The refrigerant was added, everything was buttoned up and then he explained how to get the most comfort and efficiency out of my heating and cooling units. Brad noticed my humidifier core was in need of replacing and he was able to take care of that. Great experience over-all. The technician is knowledgeable, skilled, motivated, and personable. Can't ask for much more. I feel this was a very good price for the service I received. Thank you DuctWorks Heating & Air Conditioning.

Purchased the big deal here for a whole home humidifier. Mike (the service rep) showed up on time and noticed that we already had a newer humidifier. He did a service and ensured that all was operating correctly and replaced the filter. it was great and a nice savings vs replacing and existing working unit. We will call DuctWorks in the future for any of our service needs.

I'd never had an A/C tuned-up since I lived in the house (6 years), and the system probably dates to the 90s. I thought it was a good time to get everything checked out for summer. The service was excellent, very professional and on-time. I also needed around 1 pound of refrigerant added, which was part of the package. Overall, very happy with the service. The A/C worked better this summer than last.

I was given a time slot of between 10:00 and 10:30am. They were even apologetic that they couldn't give me an accurate time of arrival, but I thought a half hour window was plenty accurate. Mike arrived at about 10:15am, immediately gave me his business card and was extremely friendly and professional. He wasted no time getting to work and explained everything that he was doing in detail. Whenever there was an option of where something could be installed, he asked my opinion to make sure the unit was installed to my satisfaction. When he completed his work, he went over the functionality of everything and explained how the unit should be correctly maintained. Before Mike left, he made sure everything was cleaned up and that the area where he was working was exactly as he had found it. As an added bonus, I had two large dogs at my house that day, and Mike assured me that he was a dog lover. He even tried to calm one of the dogs down that was startled by noise that was created as he was working. I was thoroughly impressed by Mike's professionalism, attention to detail and quality of work. I know that if I ever need furnace or a/c repair, etc., I will definitely be contacting DuctWorks.

The technician told me that the hairline cracks he found using the camera automatically rendered the furnace unusable. I was a bit uncomfortable that he did not conduct any other test to confirm this finding. At the end, all I received was an invoice with a brief statement saying that there were cracks in the heat exchanger and the furnace must be replaced. I was hoping for some sort of a test report with data or photos to substantiate the results. I later called/emailed Ductworks and talked to Jennifer (I think), asking for the report and explained that the service kinda terminate after the heat exchanger was looked at, I really didn't get my money's worth for the tuneup which I had originally paid through Angie's list. She said for that portion she would refund my money. After the call, I received a copy of a 1-page report addressed to the city's inspection department with basically a summary of the finding but no data or photo attached. This report was also signed by someone else, not by the service technician who did the work. I was actually expecting a technical report sent to me as the sole recipient and a refund to my furnace tuneup; both of which did not happen. As a matter of principle, I ordered a second furnace certification by a different licensed HVAC contractor. WIth this company, their service tech conducted several tests and checked the heat exchanger for cracks (also using a fiber optic camera). He said my furnace ran fine and he could not find any crack in the heat exchanger; and most gratifyingly, before leaving, provided me with a technical report with data which I truly appreciated. I did not bother going back to Ductworks for any more follow up as I decided my time is much more valuable to spend on more meaningful things and they can keep the money. I've got what I needed to know and learned to avoid making the same mistake. Update (10/16/2013) - Ductworks did send the $77 refund check for the purchase of furnce tune-up, but unfortunately they made it out to the buyer of the house, so the money is no good to me. I would have preferred they refund it using the same credit card that was used to purchase the service through Angie's List. Perhaps that was not an option for them, which may be something Angie's List people can look at going forward. Looking back, I don't think they knew who they were providing service for during this whole process.
Description of Work: I had ordered a furnace tuneup using a $77 deal with Ductworks found on Angie's list. My house actually had been put up for sale which already passed the city time-of-sale inspection; however, the buyer after conducting the buyer's inspection, had concerns about the age of the furnace (~23 years old) and asked me to have the furnace certified. So I called Ductworks and asked if they could also do the certification when they come out to do the tuneup. They said that they could certify the furnace provided that I paid them something like $70 more. When I explained this to the buyer, the buyer was kind enough to pay the extra amount to have the certification done. On the day of the service, the service technician quickly dismantled the furnace casing and blower, visually checked the heat exchanger using a fiber optic camera and claimed that there were two hairline cracks. He then basically stopped checking for anything else on the furnace and spent most the remaining time discussing furnace replacement and generating quotes for a new furnace. He did also fix a loose duct in the crawl space which was not related to the furnce, something that I had also mentioned to Ductworks as part of the service appt.

Response from 4Front Energy
We did not perform the tune-up that was paid for because when our service tech started taking apart the furnace he found hairline cracks on the heat exchanger. He brought the homeowner down and showed him, on the camera, the cracks. Because the homeowner was there at the time to see the photos we did not save them. The money for the tune-up has been refunded. It took a little longer because the tune-up was paid through Angies List. We however, refunded the money without the additional step of the homeowner requesting a refund through Angies List. We supplied a City certification form which the owner filled out with the information provided from the tech in our system which is why it came from a different person. The certification could not be sent in because it failed. We firmly stand behind what our technician saw on the furnace. We don't condemn old furnaces just for the sale of a new one. We believe in the safety of our customers and will take full responsibility if a misdiagnosis has been made.

Beginning with the phone call with Donna, our entire experience with all of the people at Ductworks was wonderful. Josh, Brad, and Mike were professional, knowledgeable, and considerate of the timely nature of the task at hand, as we were in the process of renewing the Minneapolis rental license of our 1900-built duplex, and needed to make sure our gravity furnace was going to pass the text. Not only did they provide prompt and friendly service, they were even kind enough to send the information to the City on our behalf. They also were very reasonably priced and ended up having to do less than originally thought, saving us roughly $1000. Thanks to everyone at Ductworks for getting the job done and for doing it with the utmost competence and kindness throughout. We will definitely be using your services again!
