Furnace Cleaning/Check Up
Description of Work: Shout out to HVAC Tech Justin. Give him a raise. Found cracks in the heat exchanger and needed a supervisor to come and verify the problem. Laid out the the work needed to repair the furnace and the cost of a replacement. No pressure or hard sell. I’m obviously going to get a few more quotes, but if they’re anywhere close, I’ll go with Harriman based on their visit today

Description of Work: The serviceman come to my home on a cold Saturday night, looked at my furnace and advised I needed to replace it as soon as possible because it was too old. He said they no longer make this brand. The serviceman requested I pay $25.00 or $29.99 for his service evaluation. I did. After his assessment, he explained his company could install a new unit within 5 to 8 hours providing I were approved their finance company. The cost was in around $5500.00. I refused to give my financial information in an application over the phone on a Saturday night. The serviceman left. The next day I called a heating and cooling company. They replaced the thermo-coupler for $7.99 and charged me a $65.00 service visit. A representative from Herriman's called me on Monday or Tuesday to take my financial information to complete my application for financing. I declined. |I would not refer this company to anyone.

Dear valued customer, I see we completed your call in November of 2015. You took advantage of our diagnostic big deal for $29 which was a savings of $60 from our office diagnostic price. When the technician came out to your home, not only did he recommend the replacement due to the age of the unit, but he also found cracks in the heat exchanger which is unsafe because it leaks carbon monoxide into your home. Our technician turned your unit off for safety reasons. At that time, we had a policy that if you choose to get a second opinion and that company does not see a crack, we will come out with that company and show them our findings. If our findings come out to be false, Harriman would supply you with a brand new furnace at no cost, but no one contacted our office to tell us of these concerns. We also have a financing application on our website for you to personally fill out if you were uncomfortable with our accountant doing it for you. Description of Work: technician came out and advised due to age of my furnace that they recommend I buy a new furnace, did not perform cleaning (even though I already paid). I received multiple follow up calls regarding installing new furnace. I was not interested in that type of investment since I was selling the house. I did sell home and it passed FHA appraisal and inspection (no warnings about furnace).

The cleaning was performed as purchased on 9/24/15, during the inspection our technician noticed signs of ware on the heat exchanger. The furnace will still operate which is why it passed the appraisal. However, it was a recommendation from the technician to replace the unit instead of repairing it due to the cost of repairs exceeding the age of the unit if you chose to do so. You agreed upon having a free estimate which involved the follow up call pending your decision if you chose to move forward with any action. I am not sure how well they did on cleaning, but believe they did it ok.They told us that that furnace blower was about to die about two years ago, and gave me estimate of repair for $500. But the blower is working fine past two years since then. I recently asked a guy from different company about the well-being of the furnace blower, and he said it is totally fine. I now suspect they guy from Harriman was trying to sell something that wasn't really necessary.

Upon the cleaning of the furnace we go through it like a good doctor. I can’t tell exactly when a part will fail however we can recommend replacement before to make sure you are not with out heat. Also if there is a bad bearing in the motor it can run for quite some time its just noisy and cost more on the electric bill. Which in my book is worth replacing.

The 15 point tune up appeared to take a back seat to up selling me for new equipment. Never saw the burners being washed or the motors being oiled or the filters being inspected much less cleaned or commented upon. I had to ask as he was ready to leave for the free washable filter, which when presented and commented on it was agreed that it really was an inferior quality that would not do much filtering. And when he left the humidifier was overflowing and water the next morning was everywhere. All that was done was turning on the water without checking the drum or water flow. This was just an attempt to upsell without doing what was paid for.

Were not quite sure why the home owner is upset upon the Furnace cleaning, there was a carbon monoxide reading of (danger ) which by Michigan State Law we can not operate the furnace to perform the cleaning , this was talked about at the time of service and agreed upon that it was dangerous to operate and the total system should have been left off there for there would be no water leak form the humidifier.
