Functional Floors

The work with Functional Floors and Finishing did go well for the most part. I had a complaint about the fact they didn't cover up the cracks in the hardwood, there was another hardwood floor and they came back out and re-did it. I was just annoyed by that they kept telling, it is going to come out and everybody else kept telling me how come you didn't fix the cracks of the floor. They were very polite. They came out when they said they were going to. They did what they said they were going to do, this is the first time I had ever had it done, so I didn't understand about these spaces between some of the boards, so I didn't understand that, so my daughter came in and said they didn't fill in the cracks. I called them back up and they came back out. They were about average, I guess, in pricing. We had one other guy come out that he couldn't do it until the end of May and this guy could do it really quickly, so I picked this guy. The quality looks good. The one thing that I think they should have done is they should have educated me more about process because I didn't know what they were doing. When they took the carpet off, there was just a lid of marble going into the bathroom, I didn't want to knock my toes on it, so I have them put a piece of wood across, so I wouldn't stubbed my toes, but I think that way they are just saying to educate your customer, make sure they understand what you are going to do, what you are not going to do. This is the first time we have ever had it done and I haven't had hardwood floors since I bought the house, but I have carpet. I might use this provider again in the future.

Everything went extremely well. Chris Franklin, the owner/sales rep, was extremely professional, knowledgeable, helpful and flexible. I purchased a "Big Deal" covering 700 sq feet for $349 and used it towards my living room, dining room and an office. Functional Floors then extended me a discounted price to also polish and apply a top coat to the hardwood floors in two bedrooms. They were timely and courteous with regard to both the sales appointment and the work that was performed, and also called afterward to make sure I was pleased with the results. I believe I received great service at a great price and have already recommended Functional Floors to my friends. I highly recommend them to the Angie's List community, as well.

It went very well, as usual. This is the third time I have used this company, and I like them so much that I don't bother to check out other companies. I bought a coupon for 200 sq.ft. sand, stain, & finish through Angies List. Chris called and emailed within the hour. We set up an estimate appt. at mutual convenience, because I wanted additional work done. Steve, the estimator, arrived on time, and he was very nice and knowledgeable. The work was scheduled at the time I wanted to start, and that was about it. Chris emailed me a confirmation for my calendar. He called the day before to remind me. His two men showed up on time, and went right to work. Nice guys. John showed and explained that some areas of the floor were too deeply scratched or stained that he couldn't sand that deep without causing damage and low spots. I had no problem with it. They got it all sanded and the first coat of poly on by noonish. The next day the second coat went on, along with the base shoe, and it was done, and it looks fabulous. This company and its employees are very nice and friendly people, and they work efficiently. That is very convenient for me.

Josh did an excellent job. Very prompt, worked hard the entire time and generated a minimal amount of dust. The floor looks great!

All floors sanded in one day, stain another day and ploy the following day. Workmen were very professional and friendly, were able to answer all questions and concerns.

The end result was good. Actually I used Angie's List to find them. I looked at four different companies and used them. I think they did a really good job. I chose them because they were the second most expensive, but they inlaid the vents so in reality considering they were the second most expensive but they did that so that made them a better choice with more safe features. I was not happy with one of the people that came out and then one of the supervisors came out and took care of any issues that I had. Their timeframe and the thing that stood out with them was that they actually inlaid my vents, which no body else really offered and the one company that did offer it was a lot more than them. In my view it was a better product overall for the amount of money.

Overall work completed was well done and floors looked great. The workers moved some items around that should have been put back, but not too big of a deal. We also weren't notified when sanding was finished to evaluate if a few boards should have been replaced despite workers stating they would notify us, but did not, and finish had already been put on wood. The boards looked okay, but regardless this should have been done. Don't know if they forgot or did not want to do the extra work to replace boards. Additionally, we did have a bit of difficulty with scheduling our second day to have the job finished as the weather was bad during scheduled dates. We had to call the office multiple times to find out if workers were still going to show up after no one arrived within a few hours of our scheduled time. We were informed that they would not be coming out that day. You would expect a company to notify you of a cancellation or rescheduling. Not sure if this communication issue is between workers/office or just something with the owner.

Arrived promptly on time. Instructed me on everything they were going to do. I had decided on a darker stain and before they got ready to do the staining they wanted to show me some samples to make sure that's what I wanted and I was very glad of that because I decided to go with another. Floors turned out great!

They just finished the work. They sent a 2-man crew, and they were very professional. They didn't stay quite as long as I thought they would one of the days they came because they had another job to finish up. I was okay with that. They were very knowledgeable and prompt, and my floors look great. They were very thorough in explaining everything, down to helping me pick out my stain. They worked hard and long, even working through their lunch break. They definitely exceeded my expectations.

We went with Functional Flooring (FF) primarily based on the very positive Angies List reviews. We should have done more homework. Basically we had two issues with FF: 1) FF does not use "dustless" equipment. This was our fault, we should have figured this out before we hired them. The dust was tremendous. 2) We stained the floor a darker color then it was previously. When FF stained the floor the color was very uneven in spots, with very pronounced lines of light and dark stain. This was not noticed until the full 3 coats of polyurethane were completed. To fix it FF had to re-sand back down to the hardwood, taking life off the floor. There were issues the second time around as well, with uneven polyurethane application. We had to call them back in again to fix that, however it was a quick fix without re-sanding the whole floor. The manager Matt knew what he was doing, and when he was here the quality of the work was fine. When he left the work to the young workers, we had issues. To their credit, Functional Flooring kept at it until we were satisfied. However it took twice as long as it should and the second sanding took life off the floor.

It turned out excellent. They were on time and explained his services. He did what he said he would do. I think that the price was fair. They got in and got out. They were efficient and I would use them again.

We are so pleased with the quality of work! Fred worked for over 8 hours and his work was perfect. It was a challenging job, with many angled cuts; working in and around two closets. We initially thought the price was high (cost as much to fix 80 sf as it cost for the original 300 sf install), but it was well worth it. Fred's workmanship was far superior to the original installer. He was professional in every way. We wouldn't hesistate to hire Functional Floors again, and based on our experience we highly recommend them!

It worked out well. They came within a couple of weeks after I purchased it. The floors looked very nice, much better after they finished. It took two days because they had to let the stain dry and come back and put the sealant down.

We had an estimate by Chris, the owner. He was extremely professional and very up front and honest about what was needed and how we should expect the floors to come out. The home was very disgusting when we got it and we were unsure if some of the stains in the floor would come out with sanding. He thoroughly explained our options and pricing and told me he would get back to me with a quote. We received the quote within a day and we were very pleased with the price. We scheduled the work for the first week in November 2013. When the crew arrived on day one, they were very nice and well presented. I was comfortable enough to leave them to their work while I went to work for the day. We stopped by that night and were amazed at the difference one day made! The next day was the same, the work looked great. We had opted to leave the little bit of staining that could not come out rather than replace boards or use a dark stain. After day three, the floors were done, but we were not satisfied with the landing at the front door. The supervisor came out and took a look at it and agreed that it needed to be fixed and did the work himself. We were much happier with the result and love how the floors came out in the end. We are still in the remodeling phase, but we are so happy with the work that FF did for us. Thanks to Chris and his awesome staff for a job well done!

I remember them doing a great job for me. There was a little piece of molding that needed to be nail down. The guy said that he had a guy that will come out tomorrow to take care it for me. They called me back to make sure everything was okay. I would use them again and recommend them to somebody.

They came and gave us an estimate. They were prompt and informed us what was best for the floor.

Superb work. Perfectly matched the stain colors I was seeking. Very neat, clean. Told me exactly what to expect. Returned for quality inspection. Very careful and precise.

The estimate appointment seemed to go ok. I have an older home with stains on the floor. I choose natural color, saw no reason to go trendy on old oak flooring. They should have told me a darker stain would help hide the stains in my floor. Seems obvious now, but I didn't think of it. I asked how long it would take, he said it could be done in one day, and I could walk on it by 11:00 in the evening. So, OK, I don't have to sleep elsewhere, or so I thought. The workers were clowns. Arrived a few minutes late. Worked for 45 minutes and took a 45 minute break. Worked a little longer then took an early one hour and fifteen minute lunch. When they left for lunch, they backed the van out of my driveway, forgetting to close the back doors, dropping some equipment on the street. I could see they would NOT finish in one day. Mention it to head guy, he says they never finish in one day and I wouldn't have been promised that. I make arrangements to stay with a friend overnight. I stayed around and watched through the doors and windows. One worker was nowhere to be seen. I finally figured out he was in the bathroom, for a looong time. I complained and asked for someone else to finish the job the next day. I did not want those guys back in my house. Floor job is ok except for a couple of small spots, only noticeable to me.

They were very professional and performed the work excellent. Would definitely call on them again.

This job was done at one of my rental properties. Chris arrived on time for the estimate. He is very professional, yet friendly. Also organized. He explained the entire process, and advised that, in this case, three layers of top coat would be best. The extra coat didn't add much to the cost. The cost of the entire project was fair and reasonable. His men showed up on time, in clean work clothes. They were nice guys. They didn't goof around, just got right to work, and they were done with the job at their extimated time. The oak flooring was about 50 years old, and now it looks brand new. I can't find even a tiny mistake. I would, and will, recommend Functional Floors to everyone I meet. And, I have used them again.

Setting up the service was very easy. I contacted the owner of the company. He came out to the house at the date and time we agreed to. He was right on time, very punctual. He described the process of refinishing the floors, measured the rooms, and then said he would send me the estimate in an email with exact pricing. All went as he described. I scheduled the service for a couple weeks later. Mind you that I went with this company because of the Angies List rating. The week/day that the company was scheduled to arrive, they arrived on a Monday morning at the time they communicated (again very punctual), and began the process of taping and putting plastic on the kitchen cupboards, the register ducts, and return air ducts. This process took most of the first (Monday) morning. They then began sanding the floors. At the end of the first day, they wanted to know what color of stain we had picked out (the company has several posted on their site, of which you can choose 3 that they will place on the floor for us to evaluate). Of the three colors that we wanted to review, the lead crew member only had one on his truck. Therefore he suggested that a mix of a couple of the colors would get us close to the color we were looking for. He did indicate that he was not supposed to mix colors, but he ended up mixing two of the colors that we ended up liking. On Tuesday, he continued to sand and at the end of the day he applied the stain and the first coat of urethane. The rooms that were being refinished were on the first floor and the back side of our home. A Kitchen, Family Rm, and hallway from the garage. The doorways to the rooms to the front of the house were sectioned off with plastic which made it difficult to see the flooring up close (we basically had to go outside and walk to the back of the house to look thru our windows to view the flooring. The next morning (wednesday) we viewed the flooring from the outside again, and noticed some small chunks of stuff sticking up out of the urethane. We mentioned this to the lead crew member and he indicated not to worry that they buff the floor between coats. On wednesday, they applied the 2nd coat of urethane. Again, Thursday morning we looked from outside the window and could see stuff in the urethane. We again mentioned this to one of the crew members (by the way, the owner had sent a 3 man team to complete all of this work). On the third day, Thursday, only the youngest crew member showed up. When we pointed out the debris in the urethane, the crew member again assured us that they would take care of it. We couldnt walk on the floor for 24 hours after this final coat. On Friday night we finally went thru the door to the family room for the first time and were amazed at the beauty of the color of the floor but were sickened at the awefulness of the urethane and some of the staining detail. Early on Saturday morning, we contacted the owner and requested someone come walk thru the rooms with us because there was so much wrong. The owner sent his supervisor out on Monday morning. The supervisor, Matt, walked into the family room and within a few seconds told me that I didnt have to say anymore, he could see everything they had done wrong. I told Matt that the Owner had sent me his B TEAM and I needed his A TEAM. Matt indicated that he could fix everything that was wrong, and there was a lot wrong! He was a man of his word. It took an entire second week to get it all corrected. For instance, the B TEAM must have assumed that the space where the refrigerator sits did not require attention to detail and didnt remove all of the old stain in spots and then slopped on some of the new stain and didnt blend it into the wood. They also forgot to blend some of the stain along some of the moldings and had applied the stain across the wood grain. This was done in a high traffic area. They also added wood register vents to match the wood, however they left the plastic in the ducting, put the vents in, stained them and polyurethaned them into place! Add the urethane job that had so much debris or bubbling in it that you couldnt walk a foot in any direction without seeing a defect. Needless to say, this was a perfect example of a job that was really messed up. But Matt, the Supervisor, was very concerned with my happiness with the floor. He did an awesome job fixing everything that was messed up. I had requested another walk thru with the Owner on Friday. He seemed a little reluctant to meet but agreed anyway and provided me a time slot that was good for him but was a bit problematic for me, but I took it anyway. He indicated that on Thursday night when we get back in to view the floors, if we didnt need to walk thru, then to call and cancel. When we finally got in to see the floors Thursday night, at first glance it appeared that Matt had fixed everything, so I called Chris, the owner and cancelled the Friday morning appointment. However, on Friday morning, when I took the plastic off the door openings to the laundry room, I saw debris in the urethane. I was torn about whether to call them yet again, since this nightmare had been going on now two weeks, I really didnt want to have to go into a third week and juggle my work schedule with the contractor schedule as well as the fact that we have a big dog and a cat that have been enduring the smell during this entire time (of course we had many of the windows open to vent). Anyway, as luck would have it, Matt actually called me early Friday morning. I explained what I saw that morning and he came back later that morning to fix the issue. Matt, whatever you are getting paid, you need to get a bonus for last week. Its one thing to have to fix your own shoddy work, but to fix another teams shoddy work, that is painful. I think Chris, the owner, has so much confidence in Matt's abilities, he didnt really believe that he needed to come back to walk thru. Anyone looking to use this company, make sure you ask for their more experienced team. But we are a perfect example how this company stood by their work and reputation. It has been a painful couple weeks, but because of Matt, we now have BEAUTIFUL floors! Thank you Matt!

It was a great experience, Chris came out to the home and gave an estimate, Chris was on-time, very professional and polite, I was happy with the quote so after about a week I called and scheduled the work with Chris. Fred came out and did all the work himself, Fred was always on-time, worked hard, cleaned-up and was very friendly. The floors turned out great. I was very happy with the work. It was a great experience. I will use them again in the future, I could not be happier..........

Was very happy with the workmanship, our floors look beautiful. There were some mistakes that the owner handled very professional. Tardiness and lack of communication was something that bothered us. I felt since we were a small job, we were not high on the priority list. Overall, happy with the quality of work and price.
