Functional Floors

The work was to buff and apply one coat over hardwood floors. Initially, it took me a while to obtain a paper estimate but, the job was well done, and I am happy.

All parties with whom I had contact were "top flight." Starting with Director of Sales and Operations, Chris Franklin, to Steve who came out to provide the estimate and of course Howard and Tim who provided and completed the service. I had the pleasure of speaking with Chris as often as I felt necessary and I cannot say enough about the professionalism, courtesy and friendliness of all concerned. Howard and Tim, who performed the work on the floors, were punctual and to the extent possible cleaned up after themselves. There is bound to be dust as a result of the sanding. Howard and Tim took all precautions to try and minimize and then vacuum up the dust (one of the floors is in a two story foyer). All along the way Howard, Tim, and Chris ensured the caveats of when to place the furniture back on the floors including rugs, benches, etc. were conveyed to me. On jobs such as these, an area especially important to me is after work care and follow-up as needed. How a company or contractor performs in this regard is key (just like a Car Dealerships service area and work). I had to follow-up with the company after the work was done on a small issue. Calls were returned, emails replied to and follow-up handled very expeditiously. I would recommend this company in a heartbeat. I admit, I have no basis for comparison. This is/was the first time I had professional work applied to our hardwood floors. Once Steve, the "Estimator," showed us the portfolio of "before and after" photos from previous jobs, provided us with the written estimate, and my having researched the company previously, my wife and I felt we didn't need to look further. We are very pleased.

I was going to do the work myself as I was redoing the entire kitchen but decided it would be to much of a job for a novice. Chris laid cement board, tiled and grouted over three days. He was great to work with and did an excellent job. I'm glad I didn't attempt to do the job myself and would recommend his company to friends.

The floors look great. There was an issue with one of the original floors boards and the way it was initially repaired, however the company was very responsive to our concerns and fixed the floor to our satisfaction.

Very well. Beautiful job. Floors look great. This is a 1930's house and house and had original finish on oak floors. Tim and Howard did a great job.

The owner was great. In short noticed, he fitted us into his schedule. We had just purchased the house. And we took out the carpeting. The original flooring was in bad shape. They transformed it, into a flooring that looked new

This certainly wasn't a "get it done right the first time" project. I'm not going to get into specifics, but overall we definitely felt like the guy who refinished the floors and removed and replaced our baseboards cut corners throughout the project. We're very nice people and feel he took advantage of that. The floors look nice but I would not recommend them to a friend based on the service and runaround we received from the person who worked on the floors.

They did a great job. I would give them a B as far as the communication but the quality of the job was an A. I would use them again.

Left too much mess. Too many clumps of poly dribbled on the floor. Had to call them back to repair. Lost my kitchen for a week instead of just a few days. Overall finish a little bubbly and uneven. Concerned about how long it will last.

This is my third experience with Functional Floors and it's impossible to say all the positive things I want to in this review. Incredible service, competitive pricing and beautiful work. As of spring 2015, the company has refinished two bedrooms (on two separate occasions) and this living room/dining room/hallway project. Always communicative - something sadly lacking when dealing with most contractors - through the project, from pricing the bid to sending the final bill, it's been nothing but a pleasure dealing with Chris and his staff. Another rarity: these folks clean up after themselves! Even with multiple coats of finish, this project was finished in less than a week and looks amazing. I truly can't recommend Functional Floors more highly. I'm literally sad that I only have a few more rooms with hardwood floors to refinish! Do yourself a favor if you need quality hardwood floor work done - call Functional Floors. You will not be disappointed!

Matthew Healey was very good, efficient and so clean with his work. He finished the job, which was stripping of the old floor stain and refinishing of the floor with new stain to match the new flooring material. The job was done according to what time frame they promised. I will use them again.

Perfect contractor. Well run company with good communication and immediate callbacks. Small crew, but the leader did a great job communicating next steps and coordinating stain colors with me. I am absolutely delighted with the craftsmanship, and they left a clean jobsite. I could not recommend them higher.

Matt Stamper shown up right on time, he started taping up the the registers and doors for dust. He started sanding and had the three main rooms finished with the course sanding. The next day he did the fine sanding on the three rooms and started to work on the entrance. When we bought this house this area had vinyle flooring on it. After I removed the vinyle it looked bad was differnet from the flooring in the rest of the house, Matt took one look at it and said 3/4" white oak quarter cut this is going to look great. This is a small areas and was all hand work. They put the stain on one day then a coat of finish the next three. They had a little trouble staining the molding to match the flooring, but Matt was able to restrain the molding and it looks great. The only down side is the smell, their is no way you can stay in the house while the sain and finish is being applied and drying it made my eyes water, we moved out for a week.

The experience for the service for the big deal from Functional Floors and Finishing was good. There was like a couple of issues with things that it didn't kind of turn out right and they had to re-do but they did re-do it and they didn't give me any problems with that. The price went over the big deal price of 399 dollars because we wanted extra coats, an extra coat. We paid additional because we wanted additional space done and I ended up paying them 500 dollars more because we added on to it. I have had them before and they had to re-do spots, like several spots and I guess they changed the way they were doing things. They sent one crew to do the work versus having certain people come and do each step that was their specialty or something. They changed their procedure which is kind of nice. They are the same people but one guy was kind of new so he kind of did some things ahead of him because he was kind of new. The other guy was a senior that was with him. They were very polite and very professional. I had to call the owner guy and I had to tell them to come back. He was very professional and he did it. He came and looked at it and he did it. It was just kind of a little bit of a hassle, little bit of a hassle. We had to stay off the floors and it was like in the hallway so we had to deal with it again. They did fix it.

They did a terrific job. The communication has been very good, every step of the way. The price is competitive. They put down on coat of stain and one coat of polyurethane. They will come back and put down two more coats to finish. They are lacing-in flooring--they are installing flooring where there was no flooring, where our kitchen cabinets used to be. They were able to match the floor well. It's a difficult job; not every company is able to do it.

They did good work, Price was good. The only thing I am unhappy about is because a water pipe broke when they were working on the floor, causing damage to the ceiling in the main floor bedroom. They were willing to pay to have it fixed only if I signed a waiver before they would fix it. I really don't like being put in that position, because you never know if there will be any future damage.

The floors look better than we expected as we had a large area severely stained when our roof leaked. They were able to sand the floor down to remove nearly all the stain. However, I would have liked them to take some of the dust from sanding, mix it with the polyurethane and fill the cracks that were in the damaged area before applying the polyurethane to the entire floor. As it was they did not get all of the dust out of the cracks so now it looks like some areas were filled and some were not. Perhaps filling the gaps is too much too expect it is just how I would do it. I would however expect them to remove all dust from the cracks if they were not going to fill them. They used a hand sander to get the area along the walls where the big sander could not get. This was good as the edges look as good as the middle. (My mother had her floors done by someone else several years ago and all the marks along the walls where tack strips were used for carpet look terrible.) However, there is an area where the amount removed by the two sanders is different leaving a ridge in the floor. I would have expected that ridges would be found and removed prior to applying the polyurethane. My last comment on quality is to get some painters tape as these people must not know what that is. All the expensively finished white molding around doors now have brown polyurethane stains where the molding hits the floors. I have a couple of comments concerning service and customer relations. We didn?t want a dark stain but picked one out in case we needed it to cover the water damage. They were good about us changing that when the sanding turned out as well as it did. They were also good about us changing from white floor molding to oak to match the floors. The floor had to be refinished over several days. The men arrived when expected except for one day when they completely forgot about the appointment. The extra couple of days wouldn?t be an issue for most but was for us. As soon as my wife got home on the first day the polyurethane was applied she had a severe allergic reaction and had to leave for a hotel. After a couple of days she still could not come home and went out of town to stay with our daughter for the next week. It would have been nice to have been offered something for the extra days she spent away because they missed an appointment and the fact that the deal applied to less than one third of the area we had done and we paid full price for the other two thirds. I thought they should have informed us up front that on rare occasions the fumes from the refinishing could affect someone sensitive to them. In our case given my wife's history of sensitivity to enviromental conditions we would have scheduled the refinishing job for a period my wife was gone.

They did a good job. We have used them before. They were very efficient and prompt. The price was reasonable. I would recommend them.

I was extremely happy with the results. They paid attention to every one of my requests, like removing the heating covers so area under them would be refinished (I will be replacing them). They also did a great job putting new oak shoe molding in every room.

Arrived on time, did all work expected. Floor needed staining and we got to see what different shades would look like and choose what we wanted. Fabulous job -- my son saw it and immediately asked for their name and phone number. This was one of the all too rare situations where there were no surprises, the work was done on time, and exactly as expected. We will tell everyone about Functional Floors.

I liked the quality of their work so well I hired them again to do another house. Again, great results. I was very picky about the color of the stain and they, very patiently, brought more and more samples of stain until I was happy with my choice. I've recommended them several times since.

This could not have been a simpler job that they botched. I had a 3' X 3' landing changed from carpet to wood since its probably the most high traffic area especially with dirst on shoes. I also had them put baseboards around my kitchen and family room. The First day the work finished, the worker just left. The baseboards looked like they were done by someone who had never done baseboards before (It turns out that is exactly what happened. The company sent a worker to do baseboards and he had never done baseboards before). I could not believe it. The small little floor area had to be redone because dirt or something did not dry right with the stain and did not look good. The second time, the supervisor came out and had to teach him how to do baseboards correctly and he redid the floor. After this day, the floor looked better, but the worker did not caulk around all of the baseboards still and where he did, it got on all the walls and floor. There was no care for workmanship because some of the work still had to be fixed by the supervisor. The third time, the supervisor came out and fixed everything, but still did not fill the nail holes they made. The supervisor was a real nice guy and knew what he was doing, but the customer care guy, never followed up with me on any occasion and I had to keep calling. STAY AWAY from this company. The customer service side is horrendous. Who sends someone to do baseboards that never has done baseboards before.

Howard and Damon of Functional Floors came out on 10/30/2014 to sand and refinish my living room and hallway floors. After about 10-15 minutes of sanding the floors, Howard told me they could not use the lighter natural stain I wanted because they were not able to remove all the stains from my floors; and if they used the natural stain, my floor stains would show through. Howard told me I would have to use a dark (walnut) stain or get carpet. I definitely did/do not a dark stain on my floors. Therefore, they did not do the job.

Finished product looks good. Some uneven sanding visible but overall high quality.
