The sanding went well. They did a good job of smoothing the uneven areas without needing to replace any boards. They left a few gouges but in general it was done well. The problems started with the color match. We'd had the other rooms and hall done years apart in stages, and no other company had any problem matching previous work. But these guys had no clue. We accepted their first attempt but soon realized it was a very bad match and paid them to do it over. The second attempt was an improvement but still nowhere near a match to the other rooms. They tried hard and meant well but apparently they just don't have whatever skills the previous finishers had. In the end it looks sloppy and hastily done.
Description of Work: We had one room with an unfinished oak floor that had some warping with old filler leveling it. We asked that the floor be sanded and boards replaced where the warping was too severe, and that they match the look and color of the other rooms and hall.

We refinished a different bedroom ourselves several years ago, our first time refinishing a floor, and we did a better job than we got from this company, particularly the sanding. Unfortunately, we are no longer able to do this type of work ourselves due to health issues. On the first day, the refinisher showed up on time , but there was an hour and a half delay getting started because he needed 220v service for his equipment which wasn't readily available to the work location. It seems this need should have been mentioned prior to the job starting. Who has 220v service in the bedroom? The sanding job was terrible. Experienced refinishers are able to produce quality results without damaging walls. We advised Functional Floors that the walls were recently painted, and requested that they come prepared to protect the walls. The refinisher seemed unaware of our request and stated he would just stay away from the walls. When he was done we had a noticeable ridge all along one wall 6"-8" away from the wall, another noticeable dip along an adjoining wall about one and a half board widths from the wall, then across the room from that, it looks good under the window, then dips going into the corner. The 4th wall is not too bad, but that's in the closet. The refinisher showed up late on one of the return dates because he had another, bigger job elsewhere. When the job was completed the finish of the floor was not smooth, as though the screenings during the clear coatings were insufficient. The stain was not even. Overall every aspect of the work was very poor. We complained and someone else came to look at the job. He agreed the work was poor and agreed to refinish it. This meant the additional inconvenience of sleeping in our living room for several more days. The ridges and dips in the floor were minimized by the additional sanding but could not be removed completely. The stain application is much improved, but the sheen of the top coat is uneven, appearing more glossy in some spots. We are very unhappy with our experience with this company. We paid a substantial price and expected professional results. I don't know if the company hires inexperienced workers or subcontracts some jobs out, but the quality of the job you get from this company is apparently the "luck" of the draw.

Awful, they did a terrible job, it's one year later and my floors need to be done again. I paid $2400
Description of Work: Functional floors did my kitchen and hallway floors one year ago. My floors looked nice in the beginning however six months later the gloss began to fade and now it's one year later and my floors look awful. I called the office and was told gloss and stains aren't under warranty and I could schedule an appointment to have my floors done again. I would never recommend this company to anyone. Either the products their using is cheap or their putting the minimum on the floors so you will have to keep calling them back. I paid $2400 for terrible products.

Overall the floors ended up looking very nice, I will say there were some boards I would have wanted replaced prior to the full job being completed but I understand their policy of not fixing natural defects in the wood. Good things: When we pulled up the carpet we found some areas that had been half walls or something prior so no existing hard wood was there and they did an excellent job of fixing that for us. They did a good job on the transitions and around the doors and step into family room ended up very nice as well. Staff that were at the house were nice and the guys cleaned up well after themselves. We have gotten several compliments on the floors. Cons: There was some damage done to the walls about 1' to 2' off the floors that was originally told to be part of the process of getting close to the walls. There were several small splashes of stain that had gotten up onto the walls. The floor molding they put on was not put in level at all, which thankfully we didn't have the toe molding done as well because we may not have noticed otherwise. Resolution: Chris at Functional Flooring originally offered to have their "Guy" come back out to fix the Cons mentioned above but I told him no we had a guy that had already professionally painted our house and I wanted it done back at that same quality. There was some back and forth on what that would cost but in the end they did allow our person to not only fix the wall damage/paint but also to correct the floor molding. The only reason I wouldn't go with this company again in the future is that while they did in the end fix the issues to our satisfaction there was in my opinion to much grief in getting that to happen. As a customer spending what we spent I shouldn't have had to call them and haggle over them fixing what was wrong. If we hadn't called to report the damage it would have just been left. Same goes for the molding how it was so out of level is beyond me but it was and it was left as such. I have photos I can share and am willing to of the above issues to show what I typed.

The job went ok. It took double the time I was allocated overall which meant double the hotel stay cost for myself and Pets. The job should've had several individuals working it but ended up only having one person throughout who ended being a subcontractor of functional floors, which gave me my doubts. I had to call several times to relay expectations and more times after the job was done to relay deficiencies. I had a few other contractors come through after comment on the lack of filling between the wood joints upstairs in front of my bathroom and the use of nails not meant for finishing. Overall, it was an ok job but I don't think I'll call FF again.

During major kitchen remodel it became apparent we needed to have both boards replaced/repaired in our hardwood floors as well as all of our floor stripped and refinished. Called Functional Floors. Worked with Chris who had our job estimated. We decided to also have trim in both Kitchen and Family Rooms replaced. Estimate was fair. Project started and was led by the job supervisor Angel. This guy was awesome. Advised us of process and what would look good. Gave us several stain options to use. We went with an Oil Based stain. Full process took 4 days for stripping, staining and all trim work. While this is significant labor, Angel did all he could to keep our house clean and minimize dust. Could not be happier with the results. All along Chris was responsive to any questions. Great experience and great local company.

The finished product was beautiful. They were going to install shoe molding and for some reason chose not to do that. I had to ask for the refund of that cost. Also, they got some stain on my freshly painted walls. Minor problems, beautiful results. I would use them again. The flooring gets complimented.

Our home is transformed in a positive way due to the work done by Functional Floors. Having a contact person who organized everything was excellent as we could call at any time with any questions and the person knew our situation and was able to provide support and clarity. We are extremely happy with the results.
Description of Work: Functional Floors scheduled all the necessary workers to remove all the furniture from our home, clear and prepare all the floors for refinishing, the actual act of refinishing all the floors and returning the furniture to the appropriate places. They were on time, they did excellent work and they were supportive.

Went well. They called back promptly, came out and looked at the job, and set up a date. They were clear on what we needed to do (clear out room) and what they would do. The workman arrived on time, blocked off the room, and got to work. He kept us informed about how long he would be there. He worked around our schedule the next day for the second coat. He was also very courteous in our home and even moved his truck without being asked so we could get in the driveway.

Very poor quality work and lack of attention to detail. Price was the cheapest of 4 quotes by a good amount, but unfortunately in this case you get what you pay for. They got a ton of debris in the polyurethane (sawdust, wood shavings, carpet strands, paintbrush bristles, etc.), leaving the surface very rough like sandpaper - not just in one area, but across the entire surface of the floor. I'll grant that they were great about coming back to attempt to fix things - buffed the surface and poly'd it again - but while the finish is somewhat better, it's still really rough and bumpy with lots of crud in it. Also now there's hazy spots everywhere from where they buffed out the first layer of debris in the poly. Their sanding work around the edges and doorways is uneven. They damaged the baseboards with the sander - not just some paint scratches that would be expected, but deep gouges into the wood. The owner came out to inspect, which I'm thankful for, but he didn't seem to think they could do any better.

The price was good. The issue was that they were supposed to do three stains and they did two stains. Then he put this white title all over the floor. I don't know what it was, but that was still on the floor so I had to do some dusting and I have to go through and show them some errors and he tried to correct that but he did get stain on a lot of my white baseboards and leave me at a course that I was responsible for doing the touch up well. I didn't like that. Professionalism he was okay. He was very punctual. I would use them again but I would just ask for another person.

This was the second time we have used Functional Floors and -- as with our first experience -- they did flawless work. As a first step in the installation process, Angel came out and provided many samples of stain, showing exactly how it would look on our floor when complete, so we could choose the exact shade we wanted. He then proceeded to install the new floor and then sand, stain, and varnish the entire 440+ square feet. Angel covered all passageways, appliances, etc., to minimize dust and gave us truly personal service. Everyone we worked with: Chris the manager, Steve the estimator, and Angel the installer, were all friendly, professional, took their time, and made the whole process enjoyable.

From the very first to the very last, Functional Floors were fantastic. Steve, the Regional Sales Director, was punctual and very thorough during the initial visit. He gave us the facts and let us decide whether or not to go with 2 or 3 coats of finish, (we choose 3) and whether or not to have a stain done (we didn't). He was very honest about stains on the floor, as to whether or not the could be sanded out, (all but one very small stain came out).He was very knowledgeable. No high pressure at all. Harold, the team leader on our job, was punctual, friendly, and efficient. They took every care possible to eliminate dust, and they did a fantastic job. Sealing off doors, and even covering a clock and shelf we couldn't take off a wall. My clean up was MINIMAL... no more than an average day dusting. Any calls made to the office of Functional Floors that I made were either answered immediately or if I left a message they returned the call in short order. The main thing is that these 66 year old floors look almost like the day they were installed. I can't say enough about Functional Floors.... We will definitely have them back when we are ready to do the other floors!

He came 30 miles to our house. After evaluating the floor he told us honestly that the floor looked great and had another 30 years to go before refinishing. We appreciated that he did not try to sell us something that we didn't need. He told us how to care for our floor to keep it looking beautiful. We offered to pay a service charge since he came so far and did not make a sale, but he refused payment. It is rare to find a company in the world of home improvement that is so professional and concerned with customer satisfaction and not just out to take your money.

Great customer service and high quality work. Recently we purchased a lovely older home with beautiful original oak floors from 1951. Prior to the sale, the previous owners had the floors in all but one bedroom refinished. That room had older carpet. When we ripped up that old carpet, I was so glad we had decided to have the floor their refinished: there were large black (literally black) stains on the floor. According to the realtor, the previous owner had multiple older cats and I can only guess they were the source of the stains. The refinisher from Functional Floors wasn't even sure he could get out the stains ... but he did! Wow! High quality work. But the best part was the customer service. From the estimator to the refinishers who did the job, this company provided great customer service. I am extremely pleased with the quality of their work and their friendly professional attitudes. They were truly pleasurable to work with. Highly recommended!

They sanded off the old stain and finish from a 1947 pine floor. It looked wonderful after that process. I was going to get stain for an additional charge but they honestly told me that pine does not take stain evenly sometimes and advised against it. So I went with only two coats of clear finish as was per the package I purchased off Angie's list. It looks so fantastic! The clear coat on the pine is beautiful. The process was clean and efficient. John and Mike were very professional, courteous and conscientious of the work they did. They were very careful not to damage (from their equipment) the new walls or other new floors in the existing house including the room they worked. They answered all questions very honestly and to my satisfaction. Chris, the owner, was very courteous and very generous with his offer and with his patience, as I was going through a construction delay that was out of my control. This is a company that takes pride in the craft they do. I am very happy with my experience with Functional Floors and Finishing LLC.
Description of Work: They sanded off the old stain and finish from a 1947 pine floor (this was the original floor and finish) down to bare wood. They hand sanded the corners. They applied two coats of clear finish in satin after explaining the pros and cons of satin very semi-gloss. They buffed in between the two coats of satin finish. They used a vacuumed sander that kept dust to practically nothing.
