These guys are so professional. They arrived on time, moved furniture that I couldn't and had their equipment unloaded and working right away. They did sample colors on my floor for me to decide which stain I wanted. Very happy with this company.

We hired Cumberland Floors to do our new build appx. 10 yrs ago. The quality and professionalism at that time to install and finish our home with hickory was so good they were the only company we even considered having this time. We worked with John, his brother, and their father. When we made our first contact this time it was with John. Then when we called back, we spoke with his son Jared. Jared came out, was very polite and we thought he was going to BID the job for his father. He helped us pick out our wood but we were talked out of the wood we had originally wanted. at every turn he swayed us a different route. We wanted wide plank antique looking floors. That is certainly not what got. Anyway when it came time for the job Jared showed up with a crew of two. We had NO CLUE it wasn't going to be John, his father. We were expecting the same quality of work as we had previously had. We spent 3 days in a hotel while they laid and finished the floor. We were told it would be a 3 day job so this was to be expected. On the 3rd day, the crew had to take off for a complaint on another job to come redo something. We were told it shouldn't be too long. They didn't show back up until 3:30 that afternoon. We were told 2 of the guys would have to leave and no one was available to come back on Saturday to finish the job. When we showed up at 7pm to check the progress 2 young boys were helping with the finish work. Jared asked us to settle up the bill with him at that point. Never would we have paid in full if we thought we were going to get such poor quality finish work. The next day we were able to go back to the house to check the floors. The floors were far from what I would call finished. The shoe molding we were promised wasn't put on. The floors were totally rough to to the touch. There were rips in the wood. Large indents and waves in the floor, which we later learned were drum marks from the equipment. The stain was splashed onto the baseboards. There were large scratched swirls marks through out the floors. Some parts of the floors especially in the corners and along the baseboards were so rough they didn't feel sanded. There was actual garbage underneath the finish. Jared hadn't ordered enough registers, or shoe molding to cover the gaps in the floor, so he was to be back in a few days. When a week passed, and still no call from him, we decided to call him with our complaints. He came out that same day and made every excuse there was for the reason why things were the way they were. He said that he could buff out some of the rough spots, but as far as the drum marks, swirl scratches, large puddles of stains marks, ripped boards that they poorly tried to fix, gaps along the boards, he wasn't willing to do a thing but buff. Not ONCE did he every say, "I'm so sorry your unhappy. We want to make this better." I had a light I used as it was dark to show the scratches and swirl marks though out the floor. He told me that if you take a light...you'd always be able to see imperfections and scratches. I told him I didn't pay $12,000 to have scratches put in the wood. He told me that I chose a stain that was darker and stains would show. So it was MY fault. He told me that These were far from imperfections. We asked to have his Dad come out and look at the floor. I sent picture of all of our complaints so that John would be able to see. They both arrived and John totally defended the work that was done. Said that if he were to do the work it would look the same. I asked him about the swirl marks that were around the edges. He said its to be expected. When I told him I did some brief research on the internet and its basic sanding 101 on how NOT to get swirl marks but sanding OUT the swirls, he was totally offended that I would even question him. Again, no "I'm sorry, how can we make this right." He said that we were too picky. We spent $12,000 on wood floors that at the very least should be smooth to the touch! He' said never had anyone complain in all of his 25 years. ( Even though his son had told us while he was working, that they were being sued by a couple but his Dad knew the prosecuting attorney. Also, they left to do a job in Birmingham because the customer wasn't satisfied) He told us that the baseboards weren't sloppy we just needed to paint them. He refused to get down and feel the floor were the floor was totally rough ALL OVER! They felt like they were not even sanded! We told him that we had another company come out and look at the floor before to tell us if we were crazy, or if something really was wrong with this work. They pointed out even more things that we hadn't even noticed. When we told this to John he said "it figures". I asked him to please get down and feel the floor and he said he didn't need too. There was nothing wrong with it. We had marked the floor with pieces of blue painters tape to point out what was wrong but he didn't even look. He said he had enough and he refused to stay and be "Berated". I have never been so upset. We now have to have the floors totally sanded back down to bare wood, re-stained, and refinished. Something he refused to. Now we are out more money, more time, and totally intend to sue him. This was something we have saved for and it will never be the way I want now unless I rip it all out. I want to add that he states he is a member of the National Wood Association. After calling them today they told us he has not been a member since 2012. Maybe that is why they feel they don't need to "as a member, have pledged to adhere to the highest standards of professionalism and workmanship in the industry" anymore. ***UPDATE*** We had THE WOOD FLOOR GUYS from Davison sand, repair, re-stain the floors, and refinish the floors. I wish we would have gone with them in the first place. Our neighbors also used them and were really pleased with their work. They were 2 of the nicest, honest, and professional men. They charged $2,700 to fix the problem that CUMBERLAND caused. They used an oil finish on the floors and they are beautiful. Mr. VanWagoners response is a total lie. Nothing he said was true. It's a shame he would go to all that trouble writing a response but has never picked up the phone to solve the problem.

Response from CUMBERLAND HARDWOOD FLOORS
In response to the review I just received from Mrs. [member name removed] I would like to make public the same apology that I gave to her the night I came to look at the floor. I'm sorry for the current condition of the floor. We can promptly make corrections to it and guarantee an improvement on every aspect of its appearance except for the appearance of the sanding scratches from the position you choose to view them. If you choose to view the workmanship on your hands and knees while using a halogen light to inspect with I can't live up to that level of expectation. That was the same thing I told Jarod (my son) to say when he called me for advise as to how to handle the complaint he was on. That call from Jarod was my first indication that the [member name removed] were unsatisfied with their floor. My crew finished as much of the work as they could on 9/26. Their were two vents and several pieces of shoe that were brought to the job site that didn't meet ours standards so Jarod choose not to install them; choosing to get proper replacements. He informed the [member name removed] of this as soon as he discovered the defective materials to let them know it would take about a week for the replacement vents to be delivered and the replacement vents had already been ordered. Jarod received a text from Mr. [member name removed] on 10/6 . Jarod returned the text with a phone call to schedule a time to look at the floor later that afternoon as well as install the replacement vents and shoe. He also took one of our other helpers with him in case it was possible to make any corrections necessary at that time. Jarod took my advise and presented the [member name removed]'s with an apology. But the apology in the way it was given enraged Mrs. [member name removed] to the point that Mr. [member name removed] pulled Jarod aside and asked him to set up a time when I could come over and take a look at the floor. Jarod excused himself from the home called me and we set up a time for me to return. He went back to the front door to informed Mr. Hoist of the time we would return. Mr. [member name removed] agreed. Mrs. [member name removed] objected and insisted Jarod return inside so she could continue. Jarod declined. Jarod and I returned on the next day. Mr. [member name removed] greeted me at the door. Mrs. [member name removed] was just inside. After an exchange of greetings Mr. [member name removed] asked that I remain silent to let them say all they felt they needed to before I responded in any way. He said that was the only way he could insure the meeting wouldn’t devolve to a heated exchange of argument. Understanding that for proper conflict resolution I needed to allow them time to feel like their points of concern were being heard so I nodded in agreement. He took that as his opportunity inform me that Jarod was incapable of completing a flooring job on his own and questioning my competence level as a business person for allowing him to do so. He then proceeded to tell me about what bothered him about the floor. During his time of speaking if I attempted to respond at all it was meet with verbal jeers and disdainful comments from Mrs. [member name removed]. At some point Mrs. [member name removed] took the lead to interlace her own comments about my level of incompetence along with her complaints about the floor. After just over a half hour of listening and hearing the same complaints rehashed several times I assessed that maybe to was time for me to say something and the apology I gave was the one I stated at the beginning of this response. Mrs. [member name removed] wasn't ready to hear an apology from me. I'm not sure if it was what I said or if she felt I interrupted her but she was visibly angered at that point. She insisted that we rehash the entire floor on our hands and knees and explain how corrective action was going to take place for anything she chose to point out. I told her that wasn't necessary that I could see just fine by bending over or kneeling if I needed to get a closer look. She started pointing out spots demanding to know what my steps for corrective action would be. I was trying to answer in the best way I could. When she pointed to an area she said had sanding scratch marks I took the opportunity to restate my apology. Her reply was to tell me I didn't even know sanding basics 101 that I could learn that if I would take a few minutes of time to do proper research on the internet. With a comment like that I knew we weren’t going to resolve anything that evening. I said I believe it would be best if I leave. With that comment I looked at Mr. [member name removed] who was standing inside the doorway out of view of Mrs. [member name removed]. Nodding in agreement he said he would call me in a couple days while she was yelling something about me being less than human for not immediately apologizing for what I was putting them through. The next time I heard from either one of them Mr.[member name removed] emailed me on 10/10 to request I drop off the replacement vents and to just leave them at the front door. He also requested an additional copy of the contract. I did as they requested. Then on 10/19 I received a notice from Angies list saying that I had received a new review only to find out that the [member name removed] chose join Angies list for the opportunity to give my business a bad review and state publicly they intended on suing me. I never once said I refused to come back and make corrections to the floor. I never once said I couldn't improve the overall appearance. The only thing I was trying to convey was that I didn't believe I could improve on was the level of sanding scratches. After reading this response if anyone would care to look of the seven pics submitted with the Hoist's review only one shows any evidence of sanding scratches. The other six areas are scratch free. All pics are taken at such a close up view as to show no more than a 2” x 4” area and from the amount of reflection a more than normal lighting was created to help highlight the area. I would be remiss if I didn’t give clarification to [member name removed]'s reference to us leaving to perform other work while we were working on their job. I had scheduled a repair for the crew to take care of the morning of the third day. Several weeks earlier we had refinished a floor that was part of a larger project. One of the general contractors workers had scratched the floor in several locations and they needed us to come and make repairs to the floor. It wasn't due to a dissatisfied customer that was threatening to sue us. The crew completed the repair and returned to the Hoist residence around 12;30. They were able to let themselves in as they had been given the combination for the garage door. Neither of the Hoists showed up that day until after 3;30. The only reason we said anything at all was a courtesy so they wouldn't wonder why we weren’t there if they happened to show up. I never imagined she would miss tell the story to try to lay a foundation that she was aware of other problems with our workmanship. The [member name removed] must not realize what actually occurred can be verified by both the general contractor and homeowner of that job. As of the date of this response my apology and offer still stands. I hope the [member name removed] will allow us to make repairs. Respectfully, John W VanWagoner

It was a great expierence working with Cumberland wood floors. They were friendly, courteous and professional. No payment until the job was done.
Description of Work: Installed new flooring. Stained and finished. I had them do work for me in February of this year. They did an excellent job so I called them back to do our new kitchen floor. They were punctual and finished the job in about 7 hrs. It looks great. We are very happy with their work and will recommend them to anyone.

Contractor was very responsive to my email inquiry. Was punctual for estimate appointment and very thorough in his explanation of their services. The reason we did not hire them was the higher than expected cost. We liked the process they use, but because we are trying to get the house ready to sell, we did not want to put that much money into the floors when we have so many other costs of updating the rest of the house. If we were going to stay in this house we would have definately hired him. If, when we buy our next house, the floors need refinishing, we will definately contact them again.
Description of Work: Did not hire due to higher cost than expected.

The installers did a superior job installing the flooring. They were very careful about the mess and kept it confined to the work area. The finish used was a fast drying finish which is their specialty. We were very happy with the quality of workmanship and with the company policies and pricing.
Description of Work: Cumberland Floors did an excellent job on the installation of hardwood flooring for our large kitchen and also the entry hall. They helped us select the flooring from their samples. We chose Australian cypress for the kitchen floor and Brazilian cherry for the entry hall. Both areas turned out beautifully. We love our floors!

John's experienced employees arrived promptly at 8:30 am (time promised). Began work promptly. The hallway was terrible, and they had to replace boards were a wall was removed. Left home until time to pick the stain color. John was very helpful in the final decision on the color. (I was stuck on picking between 2 colors). Left until about3:00 pm. The job was completed. We were amazed at how our floors looked! You could not tell we're he replaced the boards. The color was beautiful. They cleaned every thing so you wouldn't even know they were their. Also thank you Ken for being patient with us. We had the appraisal done 2years previous. The estimate hardly changed. We are having our kithen remodeled and they will defiantly be doing the floors.
Description of Work: Refinished living room and hallway + staining
