I met with their salesperson, Nick Koebke, in October for a quote for new windows and a roof for my house and detached garage. The salesperson drew up a quote stating Windowsofmichigan.com would be responsible for installation of the windows and roof and would dispose of any debris created during their installation. When I asked him about the time frame of the installation he told me it would start in 4-6 weeks but normally they start sooner and that the windows would take 2-3 days to install and the roof would take one week to install. He said these would be installed at the same time to minimize the inconvenience to us. I again asked him about the time frame (as this would be a winter installation) and he said "it would be no problem" as they "did this all the time". He said he would need a 50% deposit before starting with the remainder due on completion. I told him I would need some time to get the money around and would call them as soon as I could get the funds. I then met with Nick again on November 16th to sign the contract and give my deposit. He told me someone would be contacting me to set up an appointment in 4 to 6 weeks to start our installation. I, again, asked about the time frame of the installation and was told 4 to 6 weeks (but the roof normally comes in after a month so they would probably be starting sooner) and 2-3 days for the window installation, a week for the roof.
On the seventh week I started calling to find out when my installation would start. At this point I wasn't too concerned because of the holidays but I wanted to touch base to see what was happening. After leaving some messages I finally received a call back at the end of the week letting me know that my windows installation would start the following (8th) week.
The week of January 7th they started installation of my windows. During this installation they broke one of the new windows so it took them until Saturday to finish. During this week they also delivered the roofing material to my house. Also, during this week the owner, Joe (I do not have his last name on any of my paperwork and cannot remember if he ever told me), stopped by and asked if we could settle up payment. I was a little concerned as this was not our original agreement but Joe assured me that the roofing material was at my house and they would make sure I was taken care of.
The week of January 14th I did not have anyone work on my house. I called several times and Joe told me the roofers had gotten held up at their last job but he assured me that they would be here soon. He told me sometimes this happens. He said something along the lines of "sometimes things take longer than we planned, just like once we start on your roof we will be there until we finish even if we have another job planned". I also notified him that the window installers had left a mess in my front yard and he told me "we will have somebody come up and take care of that for you".
The week of January 21st (it might have even been the Saturday before or so) they started working on my roof. No one ever came up to clean up the mess from the windows and I assumed the roofers would take care of it when they finished. They continued intermittently working (they did miss several days in between here because of "truck issues") until February 4th when we received a call at 8:30 at night telling us the roofers needed to order more material and would not be back for 2 weeks.
On February 18th I called windows of Michigan and left messages trying to find out when my roof would be finished. I finally received a return call at six o'clock at night from Joe telling me that he would find out what was going on and call me tomorrow. At this time I, again, notified him that no one had come to clean up the mess from the window installation and now we have a mess in our yard from the roof installation. Also, with all the wind we were having I was having to weight down, and in a couple of cases, chase down the roofing materials as they kept blowing out of my yard. He, again, stated he would have someone get up here to clean up the mess and he would call us tomorrow and let us know when they would be back to finish the roof.
On March 12th after not hearing anything from this company (although in between 2/18 and 3/12 I did leave several messages on the companies voice mail). I finally got a hold of a woman who said her name was Wanda. When I asked to speak to Joe she
told me he was out of the office and asked if I could leave a message. I told her who I was and asked her to please ask him if he was going to finish my roof or if I should just contact a lawyer. She cheerfully (at this point I assumed the tone was because she receives these type of calls regularly) replied she would deliver the message. About ten minutes later she called back and said they would be finishing the roof that weekend.
On March 15th the roofers returned and "finished" the roof. They were here from about noon and they were gone before 3:30. The company never cleaned up ANY of the mess from the window installation, they also left all of the mess from the roof installation.
We had pieces of metal roofing material left in our dog run area and one of my dogs received a very bad cut on the bottom of his pad. Also, they used the wrong "corner pieces" (I do not know the correct term) on my front porch and this area looks dented and cheap. You can also see along the back porch it wasn't trimmed correctly and the edges are very uneven. It is also like this on the garage.
The 1st of April my wife called the company 3 different times, trying to find out what was going to happen with the mess & the porch roof(s) & spoke with their office person (Wanda). Wanda said she'd have Joe call my wife back that afternoon
or by the next day at the latest, that didn't happen. Joe finally called my wife back 4 days later. When she finally did get to speak to
him, she explained that the porch roof in the front & in the back looked horrible & were not done right. She also told him about the
mess in our back yard, front yard & our dog run. She explained that there was paper from something they had used everywhere (including our bushes & pond), as well as foam pieces (again) everywhere, and metal shavings as well as a huge piece of tin/metal left in the back yard (on one of our bushes). She explained to him that there were these "metal curlycues" in the driveway/next to the garage right where her car is to be parked, as well as many found in our dog run/kennel. She also told him
that we don't smoke, but that the workers had littered our yard with cigarette butts. He sounded concerned with everything she spoke to him about, and even said that he had had issues with his workers "tossing" their cigarette butts on the ground before, to the point that he would go out to said job site & have the guys pick up their butts & count them & he would deduct the number of butts from their paychecks. Joe said he wanted to come to our house & take pictures of all these issues at which time she said "that's fine, but if you want I can send you pictures because I took many after being so upset with this problem". He told her that he wanted to come & see this for himself, to which she said that's fine. He told her that if he didn't come out that day or the next, then it would be the day after that. Joe never came! We never heard from them & had a party coming up on the 20th of April, so my wife & I ended up cleaning up (what we could) of our yard(s), bus
