Pricing was fantastic, but they were a little pushy on trying to close the deal. Have done a few houses in the neighborhood and work seems to be fine. Just didn't like the hard sell.

Bob Lucas Jr. quoted the bid and wrote the contract. He visited the home and measured the project 3 times. Problem#1) The size of the job was shown by home owner based on starting and stopping points on the back of the house. The distance agreed upon was later disputed by Lucas based on his contract saying 22' instead of the 23' that he measured wrong. He up charged based on his inability to measure correctly and said the contract was the contract. He did the same thing on the depth of the patio adding another foot to the depth. Problem#2) The drainage for the house uses down spouts buried with black pipe. It was obvious that they would cross the path of the walkway. Lucas did not feel that it was his responsibility to either include this or bring up before the project started. Problem#3) The lighting discussed was not installed properly or according to the plan. The location of lights was not done correctly and the option of a dusk to dawn feature was not included as discussed and an upcharge was again asked for. Problem#4) Job site was left in disarray for several days/weeks leaving garbage and supplies in street, on driveway and on grass in back yard (killing the grass). Problem#5) Payment requests were rude, hounding and bulling. The initial request for almost 50% deposit for the job seemed high, but was paid without hesitation. There were multiple calls on the day they expected completion of job. They were asking for final payment before the job was finished - A CONTRACTOR NO NO!. In the early afternoon they starting asking for a check on a job that didn't finish until 7pm. The desperation for payment was part of the cheating unscrupulous nature of dealing with this contractor. I can only imagine the large number of people who succumb/relent to these tactics. Problem#6) The quality is already in question. There are already bricks that are dipping and not level! I have been left with a broom and bag of sand and have been continually brushing in sand because the rushed off before the completed the work properly. Problem#7) The flower beds with river rock adjacent to the new walkway were supposed to be returned to their original levels and were not done and left ripped apart without any leveling or preparation for the lighting. Problem#8) Lucas Nursery is either incompetent or device in their process. Their treatment of a customer shows a lack of professionalism and common sense. The example I have used is: if you hire a contractor to hang dry wall you don't expect them to later up charge you for the dry wall screws. Problem#9) Whenever you are involved in a project like this weather is going to effect the work schedule. However, due to Lucas' inability to accurately estimate the project, he made several material/supply mistakes that delayed the project even further. They ran out of bricks and had to get more at 5pm on the day they were asking for the check at noon. They did not have the dusk to dawn sensor when installing the lights. It took 2 attempts to install the proper light control. They did not run the hard pipe for the lights. They did not cut the bricks for the light boxes and had to tear up and redo patio and steps. All of his lack of attention to detail led to more delays than necessary and wasted time for everyone.
Description of Work: Landscaping: We had a brick paver patio and walkway installed. We had walkway lighting too.

Terrible customer service. The nursery has fantastic product, but when it came to dealing w/Bob Jr. it was an absolute nightmare. The unprofessional manor in which he treated my family was appalling. He was pushy to begin with and that should have set off red flags, but given how nice the nursery products are we decided to use him. After not completing the work when they stated they would and being extremely late on the make up date we left town that night only to return to find the trees so poorly planted that the root balls were showing. One of the trees died and has yet to be replaced. After speaking with friends of the family we found out one of their relatives had taken them to court for similar issues. Just an overall terrible experience and a shame that this one man seems to be single-handedly driving this business into the ground.

The landscaper, Bob Lucas, was 1 1/2 hours late for our appointment. (I called him when he didn't show after 30 minutes; not sure if he ever would have called me). He asked me twice how much I paid for my house, and three different times tried to get me to tell him who his competition was, even though I made it clear the first time that it was none of his business. Overall, their quote was one of the lowest bids of the six or so that I received, however, I decided that this was not someone I wanted to do business with.

The price was definitely right but, customer service was awful. If you are looking for landscaping on a budget, Lucas is a good choice. Just make sure to DOCUMENT EVERYTHING they tell you that you will get in the contract and don't ASSUME ANYTHING. Customer service after the deal was signed was NOT GOOD. Again, I cannot stress the importance of documentation. Having vented about that, again, Lucas' prices were the best we could find after looking at 6-8 companies.
