Hector came on the early side of the window I was given. He was very friendly and easy to work with. I had called them to replace the leaking hose bib the front hose, which Hector did right away. Then when he tested it, he discovered the pipe to the exterior faucet was broken. He replaced it also. Hector was quick and efficient, and kept me in the process the whole time. He was also very patient with an over curious cat who wanted to "help" with all he was doing. Once the work was complete, Hector made a point to show me how to drain the hose bib so that it doesn't crack again come winter.
Description of Work: Replaced leaking hose bib with new valve and replaced exterior piping.

Went well - plumber came on time, was friendly, found the leak. Had to open the wall in the kitchen to replace the pipe. He worked quickly (although it was a long job) and cleaned up well at the end. It was pricier than I wanted, but couldn't really comparison shop because the choice was either no water, or water coming into the basement...

Our a/c unit stopped working. We called Thomas E. Clark and they were able to send someone out the same day. The repairman arrived well within the stated time (and the company called ahead of time to let us know he was on his way). He was professional, courteous and able to fix part of the problem right away (the other part needs to be ordered). He also discussed with us the reasons for the breakdown in our a/c unit and provide suggestions on how to prevent the same problem in the future.

The heat pump wasn't cooling at all, and was only heating with auxiliary heat. Their technician arrived on time, was very polite and professional, identified the problem quickly and gave me an accurate estimate before starting work. He had the necessary replacement part with him, and everything was completed within an hour. Later on, however, I found that the heat pump wouldn't come on at all (due to a loose wire, as it turned out). I called -- it's very convenient that they have Saturday and weekday evening hours -- and they sent the same technician to fix it. Once again he was on time and found/repaired the problem quickly. There was a brief miscommunication as to whether there would be a service charge for this follow-up visit, since he apparently hadn't been briefed by the customer service rep that I was concerned about whether this would be covered by their guarantee. In any case, the question was resolved quickly and courteously: the loose wire was repaired at no charge. I'd recommend this company highly, with a reminder that it's important to check any repair work before the technician has left the site.

The HVAC engineer (John Batres) is excellent. He has been servicing my 30-year-old HVAC unit for the 5 years I've been using Thomas E. Clark. John has given me great advice about how to maintain my system for optimal operation. The scheduler knows that I like John and helps to facilitate the semi-annual visits. I highly recommend the company and John Batres.
Description of Work: I received the semi-annual HVAC service, i.e., inspecting and cleaning the system (including roof top unit) to prepare for the air-conditioning season. The $295 fee covers the two seasons: AC and heating.

The project took four days (less time than we expected), and other than having to deal with a bit of plaster dust it was a very painless process. The workmen arrived on time each day, cleaned up at the end of the day, were polite, helpful and unobtrusive. The estimate seemed fair considering they had to start from scratch with the ductwork. They also described in detail the rebate and tax credit options for the different models.
Description of Work: Installed central air conditioning, including ductwork, in a 1925 bungalow. We had been putting this project off for years and finally decided not to suffer through another summer in Washington without it. We checked reviews on Angle's List and decided it was best to go with a well-established firm. My family had used Clark to service a furnace in Cleveland Park so we knew they were reliable.

Getting an appointment quickly was easy; technician was prompt, clean and courteous. Diagnosis time seemed lengthy but he got the A/C working. However, then the heat (which had been working fine before the service call) wasn't working. Tech had to come back the next week; we had a cold spell so I was without heat for 5 days. I was given a 4-hour appointment window and took off work to wait. Didn't get a call that the part for my repair wasn't available until 3 hrs. & 40 mins. into the 4-hr. window, so that was very annoying. Part came the next day, so technician came out exactly on time. My biggest complaint with this contractor is the price; I don't have much experience with HVAC repair, but $750 to put in a new programmable thermostat and a fan limit seems pricey. Also, their office called 2 days after the 2nd repair saying that the credit card I provided was declined, so I gave them a different card over the phone. But when I checked with the first credit card company, they said the charge was never presented to them and that they hadn't declined anything so this discrepancy made me a bit uneasy. I'll be closely watching both credit accounts online to make sure there's no funny business..... The field tech gets an "A" but there seems to have been some bumbling on the office/administrative side with this company.
Description of Work: A/C didn't start up for the season (air but no cooling). Problem diagnosed as a bad thermostat. Thermostat replaced as well as a fan limit.

After consulting the service tech, I discovered that both parts did indeed fail. Where we made a mistake was assuming that the thermostat was the only problem. After a repair is made, our service tech should've tested the HVAC system in both A/C and Heat mode. Had he done that he could've informed the member of both issues and saved her time. Mistakes were made in communication that have been addressed with the parties involved. The credit card issue is being researched. We try very hard not to waste our customers time. Unfortunately, I believe we could have done better on this service call. Michael S. Hartman, President

We had flooding in the basement that was seeping in from underneath a media cabinet that holds vinyl records half an inch above the floor, so it was a full-blown emergency. Our regular plumber (also an Angie's List gold star) was completely booked for the next two weeks, and Thomas E Clark was the next gold star on the List. They got us on the schedule the same day and the technician, Bakri Brown, arrived right on time. He diagnosed the problem in a ridiculously short time by knowing exactly where to look and what to look for - in my experience, this is not to be taken for granted, one plumbing company in my pre-Angie's List days tore up the walls and floor of the basement and even replaced the water heater because they couldn't figure out that our sump pump wasn't working. I stand in awe of Bakri's diagnostic skills. As it happened, the hose bibb going from the kitchen sink to the outside faucet was damaged and water was leaking into the brick wall and running down to the basement from there. He got the replacement part from his truck, fastidiously removed the old pipe and installed a new, much stronger one without making any mess at all. The whole project from arrival to departure was completed within two hours. Bakri was careful to explain all charges before starting the work. I found Thomas E Clark's charges to be absolutely reasonable, even before the Angie's List discount. : )
Description of Work: Identified the source of water leaking into the basement; removed the damaged hose bibb that ran through a brick wall from under the kitchen sink to the exterior; installed the new part; sealed up the hole.

Came home one Friday night to discover the heat wasn't working. Had only been in our home a month at that point. Called Thos E Clark based on AL reviews. Technician was able to come the next afternoon. He was punctual, polite, and very professional. He immediately discovered the problem: a dead bird had matriculated down through the chimney into the furnace exhaust, ultimately jamming the inducer assembly. With that problem solved, he then checked the draft of the furnace, discovering a potentially serious problem that was causing CO to leak. The technician came back the next day (Sunday) and fixed our draft problem. Work was performed efficiently and at a very reasonable cost. The technician explained everything he was doing, before he did it, and why he needed to do it. I was extremely satisfied with my experience.
Description of Work: Repaired furnace (removed dead bird from inducer assembly). Took apart ductwork, replaced rusted components, and reassembled. Completely sealed what had been a poorly installed ductwork job. Dramatically improved HVAC performance and eliminated risky CO leak.

I called them first thing in the morning and they offered an appointment right away. They came within the stated time frame, replaced the broken hose with one I bought, and made sure everything worked before leaving. Edwin Fuentes was a complete professional. He called a half hour in advance to let me know he was on his way and arrived on time. I am selling my townhouse and the inspection report cited two slow drips (not major leaks at the time) in the two values. Edwin presented me with two options and presented me with a standard pricing chart which I thought was very honest: 1) to replace the rubber gasket inside the value, which he stated would temporary stop the leakage, but he could not say how long it would be before it started to drip again and TEC did not warranty this work (cheaper option) and 2) replace both values which comes with TEC 2 year warranty. I initially was thinking about the cheaper option, but after turning on and off the valves a few times, the drips because progressively worse. I went with the honorable option of #2. I felt the price was fairly expensive for a job that took about 1 hour ($375 for main valve and $175 for HWH valve plus $69 service call charge). Edwin did a great job performing the work and cleaned up - he even advised me to open some windows for ventilation due to some welding fumes. After the work, he tagged each valve with laminated tags which I thought a nice touch. I would ask for Edwin Fuentes again for plumbing work.

The plumber was quick to arrive, very friendly, and took the time to explain the problem after he had diagnosed it. The charge was higher than normal because the service was done on a weekend, but I think it was a fair price considering how fast the response was.
Description of Work: Leak developed from bathtub to ceiling below in kitchen. It wasn't immediately clear where the leak was coming from and it had done considerable damage to the ceiling in only one night, so we called a plumber. It was a Sunday, so an answering service picked up, but we were called back quickly and a plumber arrived within an hour. The plumber diagnosed the problem, a very slow leak that had been building in the ceiling over a long period of time and fixed the problem my repairing the faucet.

It went very well. The leaks in the shower, which were my biggest worry, ended up being fixed by some simple caulking. The plumber who came to the house explained my options with the toilet bowl. Since it was not leaking I opted to just tighten and reseal the bowl. So far that has been fine and saved a lot on the repair bill. All in all I was very satisfied with their work and professionalism. I would definitely use this company again.

My wife called one company, who said they couldn't provide service that day and then called Thomas Clark, who was happy to come out that day. That gave a fairly broad window - 11 am-3 pm, and Joe arrived at about 12:30 pm. He started with the toilet, where he flushed and looked at the different issues. He replaced the overflow tube and the supply tube. That made a big difference in a toilet that was getting plugged all the time - apparently not enough pressure and/or water. He looked at the garbage disposal but determined there was no apparent issue, though he did advise to run a sink of hot water down there once a week. He went to the upstairs bathtub to look at the slow draining tub. He taught my wife how to take apart to drain plug and also cleared the plug (hair + razor cover). Total time here about 1 1/2 hours. Joe comes highl;y recommended - he not only did the work but helped my wife to understand how it all worked and even taught her how to fix one of the issues herself in the future.

Piping in the 2nd floor bathroom leaked water into the kitchen and basement (most likely due to a frozen pipe). We called our plumber the morning after the leak began, but they could not come to our house that day, and they instead generously referred us to Thomas Clark (which we also found highly rated on Angie's List). We called them and they sent someone by noon that same day. The technician, Edwin, was kind and professional; he and a fellow crewman soon found that the leak originated in an old steel pipe that was embedded in concrete. (The house is over 60 years old.) Since that portion of plumbing could not be easily removed or repaired, they cut the piping to the bathroom completely, restoring water to the rest of the house. That day's work cost about $600. At that point, we had no good options; the only choice, Edwin told us (which we had no reason to doubt), was to put in new, copper piping to the bathroom. They were willing to start the next day, which was great. Unfortunately, Edwin had to do almost the entire project himself (which might have made it take longer than otherwise), but he did a fine job, keeping the mess to a minimum and cleaning up thoroughly after each day's work. He also explained the process as he went and answered our questions. Though the project was not cheap ($5200), and we now have some big holes in our kitchen walls, water has been restored to our bathroom (and with better water pressure, too). Overall, we were very satisfied with Edwin's work and the company's timeliness in responding to our emergency situation.
Description of Work: They identified a leak in existing bathroom plumbing; cut water to those pipes to restore water to rest of house; removed old piping and installed new copper pipes to the bathroom.

Member Counter-Response: I would suggest that management has changed for the worse over 119 years. I have the estimate written by their plumber on paper in front of me, and it clearly states: 9 install radiators 900 plug 349 back flow 200 pressure reducer 200 fill 99 expansion tank 349 total 2077 (I had all the work above done by reputable plumbers for a total of $750 .) Mr Hartman is lying or is sorely mistaken. His response is insulting to me, and that makes twice.
Description of Work: I called them for an estimate to reconnect my radiators and start my heating system. I said I could be home by 3:00 to meet their plumber. They called me around 2:00 to ask whether I was home, because the plumber was in the area. I said no, and gave an honest estimate of how soon I could be home. I arrived maybe 10 minutes before 3, and the plumber was about to leave. He had been waiting the whole time, and I think the dispatcher had not been clear with him about my arrival. He was cranky but agreed to look at my problems. He told me about some needed repairs to my very old furnace. A second plumber from another company later agreed. He called his boss to ask the price of reconnecting my radiators. His boss seems to have made up a number, and it was a ludicrous one: $100 per radiator. There were 9 to reconnect. It is not such an onerous task to reconnect them. I have carried them myself. Some one else reconnected all of them in less than an hour! The remainder of the estimate they gave me was in the right ballpark. But they were surely trying to take advantage of me or just being really sloppy when they asked $100 per radiator for reconnection. He was clearly in a hurry to leave and seemed to be trying to rush me. I chose not to schedule them yet, although I was quite desperate to have heat. Given the mix-up about the time, which was the dispatcher's fault, the brusque manner of the plumber who gave me the estimate, and the exorbitant price for the radiators, I would say they lack professionalism, and would not call them again.

There is a major discrepancy here. We went out on 12/8/09 and quoted $839 to reconnect all 9 radiators, replace a defective Pressure Reducing Valve and fill and bleed the heating system. While it may average out close to $100 per radiator, that is not what we charge to re-install radiators. Our charge to re-install radiators is $49 per radiator. $199 to fill and bleed the heating system and $199 to replace the Pressure Reducing Valve. We DO NOT take advantage of people who are in dire straits. We charge a competitive price for the work we do. A company that tries to take advantage of its clientele could not stay in business for 119 years. Michael S. Hartman, President.

While this was a simple job, I gave them a very high rating because they came out the morning after I called (on Christmas week after a huge snowstorm!) and took care of the job in a very pleasant and professional way. I have heard they are expensive -- I don't have any comparison but Joe did charge me less than his estimate after he didn't need to use a larger piece of equipment, so he was honest about the total charges. Also he spent plenty of time investigating the problem first and then explaining to me how to try to prevent it in the future. He was very helpful and pleasant.

I requested this service and the response was quick (within a day), the work seemed to be thorough, the technician noted certain deficiencies of the work by another company that had installed the system in July 2007, and said that they (Thos. E Clark) would get back to me presently with a quote for correcting those deficiencies. After several days of silence, I called to inquire about the quote, was given an apology for the delay (they were very busy) and told that they would get back to me soon. I explained that the matter was time sensitive because we were about to have a large number of people staying at the house and I did not want any problems. Those visitors have now come and gone, fortunately with no problems with the HVAC system, but after a month and a half of continued silence, I have now chosen to call another company. If the problem with Thos. E Clark is that they are too busy, perhaps this report will serve to resolve that problem.

I have called him and apologized for this gross oversight. I spoke to him personally about his issues and was supposed to follow up immediately. I dropped the ball. We have been busy, but not too busy to follow up in a timely manner. This report was both embarrassing and well deserved. We have had to reduce our staff due to the recession and have had a couple of these problems. Rest assured that we are working to correct this situation.

Description of Work: Requested an estimate to install air conditioning in our home. The company scheduled the appointment within a week of our request and the representative arrived on time. He was very knowledgable and seemed to complete a thorough assessmnet. However, it has been over two weeks and I have not had ANY follow-up, not even a phone call to let me know when to expect a written estimate.
