Overall we give Thomas E. Clark an excellent rating. The one point that is important to share is, if you have questions about the work that is to be completed at your house, ask them. The communication about the job is/was poor. Knowing this is a company that has been in business for at least 40 yrs. is comforting but when your spending a great deal of money on this size a job the amount of info. they give you is very little. We asked a lot of questions about exactly what would be done at our house. George, the vice president, as well as Joe and the others were happy to answer them. Charles who patched up the driveway with gravel and plywood and came to do the lawn work did a great job.
Description of Work: The job at our house was a big and expensive. Our complete sewer/pipe system needed to be replaced after yrs. of dealing with roots from our trees growing into the pipes and causing major clogs. First the vice president of the company, George, came to give an estimate. We were pleased when the amount did not change after the work was done. The crew worked hard for 2 straight days, digging up basically the entire lawn and laying new pipes. The crew wanted to complete the job before the rain so they worked until 9:30 on the second night. Part of the driveway also needed to be dug up. They wanted to come back that week to reseed the lawn but we found many large pieces of concrete and bricks throughout the dirt. After some wknds. of collecting the junk in the dirt we called Thomas E Clark and they gladly came and seeded as well as took some of the larger concrete pieces away. The crew was professional and kind to work with.

We had a blocked drain for our washing machine. We called Thos E Clark and scheduled an appt. The service tech was punctual and professional. He quoted me two prices for snaking the drain and actually recommended the lower one (SHOCKER!) for my problem. The job was finished in short order and he stayed while I ran the washer through a full cycle (two drainings of the machine) to make sure the job was done correctly. He even gave me some tips for preventative maintenance. We'll definitely be back when plumbing problems strike again.

I requested a service call and the technnician showed up early in the 4 hour time slot, but after kistening to my description of the concern over the frequent on-off cycling, he proceeded to simply ask that I turn up the thermotat. Granted he did open and close a valve or two, citing low water pressure in the bolier, before the thermostat increase was requested. I don't know if any other diagnostic test was applied. After 20 minutes he declared that everything was ok and perhaps the intermittent cycling was due to the integrated domestic water heater that is attached to the furnace bolier. I was a bit disappointed in the approach and in the somewhat lack of troubleshooting effort to focus on my concern over the frequent on-off cycling. The cycling did stop for approximately 24 hours but has now re-started, this time in 15-17 minute intervals. We bought this furnace from Thomas E. Clark in 1999 and have always had them do periodic inspections and they did one repai under warranty inn 2002. We also use them for plumbing calls and have always found then capable, reliable and puntual with no-returns necessary. I plan to contact them tomorrow and see if they can alleviate this one blemish. I was using Angies List today to find other possible contractors if it comes to that and decided to do this review.. .
Description of Work: We needed to have our gas fired boiler furnace looked at less than 2 weeks after TEC did a bi-annual inspection (for $149 + $69 house call fee) that declared the furnace in good working order. Several days later we noticed what seemed to be ta too frequent cycle of the furnace turning on , the burners igniting, runnng for a short time, then turning off after less than 90 seconds. These on-off cycles occured every 10-14 minutes.

We returned again on Oct. 28th. This time sending a Field Supervisor who spent an hour and fifteen minutes checking the system AT NO CHARGE. He found the system in good working order and no longer short cycling. Michael S. Hartman, President.

The company has a website which featured a live chat person. I was up during the middle of the night researching garbage disposals when I came across the Thomas Clark Plumbing website. So, right away, I was impressed that there was someone online at that hour. I finished the chat by saying I'd call in the AM to schedule an appointment, but they called ME at 7:30 am to do the scheduling. They had had a plumber out by 3 pm to do the repair on the garbage disposal. So A+ on responsiveness. The person who called had obviously read my chat transcript as she asked right away if we would be providing the new garbage disposal. Good for her. She also told me what to expect in terms of price for the service call and how the quote for the repair would be handled. The garbage disposal was filled with onions and onion skins that my husband jammed into it so it had to be replaced. The serviceman got to our house on time (between 12 and 4 pm and called before he came). He was very pleasant. He assessed the problem and quoted us a FIXED price for installing a customer provided garbage disposal. But, at no extra charge, he did try to get the old one to work first. When he couldn't unjam it, he proceeded to do the new installation. As he installed the new one, he explained to me each step he was doing so I could re-install it if need be. (Long other story and not relevant.) At the end, he carefully tested everything to make sure it worked and that our dishwasher worked as well. He also checked carefully for leaks. Then he worked on the toilet. Again, it was a fixed price. While all of this was a little pricey, it all works now and I couldn't have done it. He was careful to clean up after himself and he wore these things over his shoes to make sure he didn't track dirt in the house. Boy, did I appreciate that. Overall, no problems and a job well done.
Description of Work: Replaced the garbage disposal with a new one I purchased and repaired a TOTO toilet.

I noticed some water spotting on my ceiling below my master bath. I called Clark based on angie's list reviews and the quality of reception/scheduling was fine. Plumbers arrived during scheduled window. I understand that agencies use subcontractors and its worth pointing out that ours did not inspire any confidence and service was unprofessional. He came out looked at the shower and the ceiling and gave me two options: He could either do a shower pan test for $170 or cut a 3ft by 3ft hole in my ceiling for $170. after performing those tests he might know what's going on, but he wouldnt fix the hole he cut. that seemed strange. the other plumber that accompanied him pointed out quietly that their could be a grout/caulking problem with the shower upstairs. The primary plumber didn't notice until the second plumber explicitly pointed it out. I asked, in your professional opinion, what should I do? He then went through all the pricing again and gave me all the disclaimers about how he couldn't guarantee any fixes. Should i just put caulk down around the perimeter of the shower and see if i can avoid both shower pan test and hole in the ceiling? I could do that for you, said the plumber, but the one shower would cost you $118. Based on the entire experience, i decided to cut my losses and send these guys off without any performing any work. I called another plumber who came in, accurately diagnosed the problem, and proactively caulked all of our bathrooms, showers, and toilets. he also fixed a leaking hose and finished the job in under 2 hours. no leaks, no problems and $160 total for all work performed - he was professional. I am very happy i did not use the services of Thomas Clark and will not call them again.
Description of Work: Called plumbers out for a service visit. Paid the flat visit charge. Based on diagnosis and lack of professionalism I did not request any work to be performed.

Overall wonderful experience in all regards. They turned our project into something effortless. Yes, I will use this company again.
Description of Work: We needed a shower bar installed. The manufacturer discontinued making the length that was originally installed when we built our addition. They sent us a replacement that was 6 inches too long. Several companies said it would be too hard to do, or the price quoted was outrageous. I signed up on Angie's List to find a company highly rated. Thomas E. Clark came through on price and on quality of service.

We called T.E. Clark to inspect our water heater as part of the process of getting our house rented, and choose them because they had originally installed the heater two years before. It was pretty easy to get an appointment and their representative was punctual. Two problems though - one, the price seemed high - $200 for a visit and inspection. Also, in the process of checking our radiators, the representative failed to close one, which then slowly leaked water on our hard wood floors. I caught the leak after about 12 hours, closed the radiator up and cleaned the floor. Luckily, there was already some dark spots on that area of floor and it dried looking OK. But it could have easily been worse, and it seems like the representative's hurry got in the way of his professionalism. Minor error, and I won't go so far as to warn people off this company, but it is a knock against them in my book.

I have an older house with old plumbing. The toilet in the master bath had stopped flushing and filling and an attempt to repair it (by a non-plumber) left it leaking from the valve and water supply line. I was afraid I'd have to replace the whole toilet, but the technician reassured me that it could be fixed instead of replaced. The he was so courteous and competent in replacing the necessary parts and testing them, that I decided that I would approach him about fixing the dripping faucets in the hallway bath and kitchen. He did a great job and was informative and professional .. Definitely a good experience!

Keep an eye on these people if you use them! I wished I had video taped the whole thing, but have photos of the guy refilling my AC unit with the tank upside down. I wish I had taken pictures of the unit before calling these people. I'd be on the phone with the BBB.
Description of Work: Do not use these people! I'm a Do-It-Yourself guy and opened and examined my AC unit before contacting these people. I specifically looked for shorted wires, cracks, bad capacitor, etc (all things you can google and find easy instructions on repair). They sent me to pull the air filter and turn on the unit. I come back, and they show me a hissing "leak" with shiny copper exposed that somehow "melted" the plastic off a wire and caused a short. The unit is a few years old. Amazing how I not only missed the clear shiny marks, freshly exposed wires, but the hissing from the leak! The unit stopped working 5 days ago, amazing how the leak kept going for that many days. Then as they refill the unit with the gas, they turn their gas tank upside down. If you've ever watched a 60 minutes episode on bad AC repairmen, this is listed as an obvious tell.

Response from Thomas E Clark Inc
The implication that we would intentionally damage a unit to create a repair is so absurd that it doesn't warrant a response, but our reputation is so important to us that we cannot let such a bogus, baseless accusation go unchallenged. This customer called us for service on 8/29/2011, stating that his "A/C was blowing warm air". We scheduled an appointment for the next day and showed up accordingly. We did find that an exposed electrical wire caused an arc that made a hole in the copper refrigerant piping causing refrigerant to leak. The customer would have you believe that we melted the wire nut and then touched a live electrical wire to a copper pipe, causing a leak in order to create a repair. We charge a $69 service charge to go out to a house where upon we quote the customer on a repair PRIOR TO MAKING SAID REPAIR!!! After evaluating this system, we quoted $915 to repair the burnt wires, repair the refrigerant piping, evacuate the system and re-charge with new refrigerant. The customer agreed to the work and paid us when we were done. This is the first we've heard of any of this customer's concerns with this repair. I know that I would NEVER do business with any company that I suspected of something so nefarious. Even more interesting, however, is the absence of any other repairs. If what was implied was true then there would have been something else wrong with the A/C system. So why wasn't there another repair? Why would we have to go to such lengths to create a repair? It just doesn't add up or even begin to make sense. We cannot begin to expalin why a customer would agree to a repair, knowing the full price in advance, pay for the repair, never convey any concerns to the company and then go on-line and give such a ridiculous review. What we can confirm is the honesty and integrity that has made our company the oldest, and one of the most respected contractors in the Washington Metroploitan Area. One final note: The refrigerant tank was turned upside down only because the system was completely evacuated and the refrigerant charge was being weighed in through the liquid line: a common practice by EPA licensed technicians in the HVAC industry.

I informed myself about the elements of work that had to be done prior to having the estimates, and the contract specifed the work to be done, so there was no ambiguity. I developed a carefully measured floor plan and good elevation scetches. I ensured that I had a good understanding of the length of time that each stage of work required, and did not schedule any of the work stages too tightly, so that this remodelling project proceeded without a hitch. I worked out the scheduling with Thomas Clark in advance and anticipated the need for re-scheduling, so that when a step had to be rescheduled, their scheduling of workmen was not disrupted. The whole project took about three weeks of work but occurred over almost 6 weeks.
Description of Work: I'm completely satisfied with the work done. Thomas Clark handled replumbing of my house from basement to second floor and replumbed a second story bathroom. I had numerous estimates from plumbers (several of whom decided that they couldn't do the work), but only Thomas Clark identified the exact leak that was staining a first story ceiling. The work had to be done in several stages with other workmen completing carpentry, electrical and tile work. The plumbers were good about explaining each step of the work. They were completely courteous and thoughtful about ensuring that their work did not disrupt my household too much. They were punctual and neat. The placement of all the fixtures was carefully thought through and completed.

My A/C system has not been cooling very well for months but it was just something I kept putting off. Well, with the recent heat wave and my indoor air temps not going below 81 at night and up to 85 during the day, I had to make the call. I started calling on Friday morning (July 22) and started with Thos. E. Clark since I used them for a minor plumbing emergency in March and was very satisfied. They were very professional on the phone from the person answering it to the technician(?) I spoke to asking me to describe what was wrong with the system. He apologized profusely saying they were innundated with calls with the bad weather and wouldn't be able to schedule an appointment until the following week. But, he would put me on their list in case someone canceled their appointment. I made a few more phone calls to other companies and they all said the same thing. I went to work that morning and by the time I got into the office I already had a message from Thos. E. Clark that they had an opening THAT DAY from 11-2. What a miracle!! I called back to confirm the appointment and went back home. The home office kept me updated as to when I should expect the technician and he arrived around 1:00. Very amiable and good natured even though he told me he hadn't gotten home before 12:30 am the past couple of nights due to all the A/C emergencies. He checked the filter and the system in the basement before checking the outside unit. It was a simple fix of adding more coolant. I could feel the difference immediately. Thank you Thos. E. Clark for your quick response and professionalism!!!

Shortly before noon I discovered a slow leak in my water heater, and part of the carpet in the basement was already wet. I went to Angie's List to look up the best plumbers. The first one I called could not send anyone the same day. Then I called Thomas E. Clark, Inc. By this time it was already after noon time. They agreed to send someone between 2:30-5:00 pm. In fact, Martin arrived around 2:30. He quickly reviewed the situation and gave me a quote for a new water heater. The quote was higher than I had expected, but Martin was able to answer all my questions satisfactorily. He arranged for a water heater to be delivered ASAP. By 5:30 pm my new heater was up and running. I got a Angie's List member's discount of $75. I am impressed that on a Friday afternoon, T.E Clark was willing and able to send someone out to solve my problem promptly. Imagine me having to turn off the water heater and have no hot water throughout this hot summer weekend! Martin knew his job well, was highly effective, and patiently answered all my questions. He was also friendly. This is something I have found lacking from those large/chain home improvement stores and their sub-contractors. As I see it, service is just as important as the product. Angie's List has provided me with one single place to go to, where I can find whatever I need. Thanks.

I liked the workers. They referred to a binder when they gave me costs on services, such as cost for a new garbage disposal and labor, which gave me confidence that their numbers were solid. I found their prices to be quite high, which is my only reason for giving them a lower rating. Because of their prices, I did not have them replace the garbage disposal or another part in the toilet. And, I had to get an electrician to fix the jets in the whirlpool tub.
Description of Work: The team came to look at a few plumbing problems, and did some of the jobs. They reseated a toilet and replaced a part. They replaced the drain in the whirlpool tub, and confirmed that the tub problem was electrical, not plumbing. They also examined the garbage disposal that was leaking and gave me estimates on replacing that.

My toilet recently came off its flange and was leaking water around the bottom and sides. Chris came out and popped the toilet off, adjudged the bolts and replaced the wax ring with a larger one. The price for simply resetting a toilet seemed a bit high, but I couldn't have done it by myself. Also caulked the toilet back into place. Also helped me understand a few simple plumbing fixes around house (shower faucet - Chris fixed its 'looseness', exterior hose spigots - they had become loose, i have no idea how easy it was to fix). Overall quite happy with service. And I got a service appointment same day!

They came to address an unknown problem which of course meant I was more than anxious. I was given a window of 1-4PM and they showed at 145 (with a call in advance) so well within my expectations. My relatively minor problem was resolved expeditiously and Joe provided not only the service I requested but also offered "advice" that left me feeling that, in addition to my issue being resolved, I learned a few tips that will prompt me to offer my recommendation when a friend asks "know any good plumbers?"

We brought in Thomas E. Clark to do the rough-in plumbing for a new bathroom and to redo all the pipes in an existing bathroom (including moving the shower from one wall to another). The new bathroom was once a closet and part of a bedroom. Andy was the plumber doing the work. He was really great, showed up everyday, and worked well with the rest of my crew of construction workers. I am a homeowner and not a general contractor, but was managing these projects on my own. When things out of Andy or my control happened (like a bathtub delivery being delayed, etc), Andy helped me understand that this is all normal and he was not going anywhere until the job was done. What I really appreciated is that Andy was assigned to this job. He did not have any other jobs at the same time. Therefore, he was at our house everyday until the work was completed with no interruptions. He walked me through the permit/inspection process, worked with my other construction workers to have what he needed when he needed it, and explained the next steps. His office even handled scheduling the inspector. Today the inspector came and approved the work. Andy was with us for six days straight, and we really appreciate all his hard work. Thomas E. Clark was not the cheapest estimate we got (nor were they the most expensive), but I believe they were the most quality. I have even asked Andy to look into replacing our hot water heater now. I trust him with my new home! We would definitely use Thomas E. Clark and Andy if we need any additional work done.
