Called Thomas E Clark Inc when the office opened in the morning. People at the office asked a few questions about the problem, then scheduled a visit for between 1 and 4 PM. Joe and his assistant showed up at 3:50 pm, set up their equipment after covering the area with drop cloths, and had the blockage cleared in about an hour. The service included creating a video of the entire drain pipe from the cleanout to the street. After the service Joe and his assistant removed all the dropcloths and did a thouough job of cleaning up the area before leaving.
Description of Work: We had plugged main drain, a most unplesant problem.

I have a regular plumber who does good work at a very reasonable price. However, when my water line to the outside of the house spigot developed a leak, I wasn't sure he could handle it, as he's a solo practitioner and I wanted/needed a professional firm. So, based on their Angie's List rating and after reading the reviews, I called Thomas E. Clark. My experience was pretty much identical to those of the other reviewers here, which means the service was excellent, professional, courteous, thorough and not a bargain, just a bit more for each project than I had imagined. Rafal was extremely courteous upon arrival, put protective covers on his shoes every time he entered the house, and gave me an estimate with full explanation for each of the three tasks I had for him. He also gave me options, including more extensive and expensive repairs, but he did not pressure me unduly to go with the more expensive options. Ironically, the most straightforward of the three repairs, fixing the faulty toilet flap, proved the most daunting. The first three flaps he tried did not stop the leak. Finally, he used what he called the last resort, which involves an adhesive as well as a flap, and while there is still minor leakage, the situation is about 95 percent fixed, which I consider about the best I might have hoped for given the difficulty of stopping the leak. The alternative would have been a new toilet. To fix the dripping faucet, Rafal needed a part that a colleague drove over to him, so he worked on the other projects in the meantime. He fixed not only the washer that I thought was the source of the problem, but also the rest of the faucet mechanism. He then also replaced the two small filters at the tip of the faucet for each of the two faucets, when I noted the water pressure wasn't quite what I had expected. The water line leak he fixed efficiently and by replacing my old wheel on/off handle with a more modern on/off valve. I am very glad Thomas Clark charges by the project and not by the hour, since it took Rafal about four times as long as he had imagined to fix the toilet flap problem. He was very courteous and friendly and gave me full explanations of what he was doing and why, which I found interesting even if I'm not about to try to fix things myself next time--not a plumbing problem, anyway. While I didn't grade them well on price, that is mainly due to the fact that I thought each of the three tasks was pretty basic, no really complicated maneuvers required, and since they already charge the $69 service fee, having two of the tasks run well over $100 was a bit of a surprise to me. However, all things considered, I was very happy to have used them, and everything appears to have been repaired properly the first time, including the difficult toilet flap. So I would use them again in the future, as they lived up to my high expectations.
Description of Work: Three tasks: Repair leaking toilet flap. Repair dripping bathroom faucet. Repair leaking water line leading to outside spigot.

Our vintage boiler failed and had to be replaced. It contained asbestos which was removed by another company specializing in asbestos removal. We asked Clark to provide an estimate for a replacement, because we have used them a number of times in the past and were very satisfied. We agreed and called the the day the asbestos abatement was done. Clark was there the first thing in the morning and had the heat on by the end of the day (it was cold out and we were without heat for a week), although some final thing were finished the next day. The cleanup was excellent.
Description of Work: Clark removed a very large cast iron boiler dating from the 19050s or so and replaced it with a new nmodern one.

I was told upfront in my first call that there was a $69 service fee, no matter what. but they charge per project, not by the hour, which is nice, because it only took him 15 minutes to fix my slight leak, and it costs $59. With my angie's list coupon ($20 off), it was $108 total, which I think is pretty decent. The plumber was courteous, friendly and even showed me how to fix a different issue (very small) on my own without charging me. I highly recommend them.

When I "sprung a leak" on Sunday night, I called Clark right away, hoping to get a call-back first thing Monday morning. Instead, I was called back 10 minutes later, by a very pleasant woman who was ready to schedule an appointment for Monday morning!By then I had figured out where the water was coming from: the garbage disposer had blown out and the water was over-flowing the drain.I schedule an appointment for the first window on Tuesday. I was called at 8:10 Tuesday morning and Rafel arrived at 8:30. He installed a new disposer and was gone in an hour. Every aspect of the service by all the Clark employees I had contact with, was prompt, courteous, efficient, and friendly.

The Thomas Clark representative was extremely polite. He put shoe covers on his shoes so as not to track dirt on the carpet. He explained everything in detail in advance of what he was going to do.When a company keeps an employee for more than a decade there's something right with that company. Rafal told me that he started with Thomas Clark upon finishing school. He is a dedicated and great employee.I am happy to have selected this company and feel that I now have a plumber I can rely on.

My husband and I had tried and failed to fix our constantly running toilet on our own, and when our AC stopped working, we decided to call in a professional to deal with both. I chose Thomas E Clark based on the reviews here. When I called, I was pleased to hear that I could have two different technicians (one for the AC and one for the toilet) come on the same day and only pay one service fee. The AC technician was great - not at all daunted by the fact that we didn't have roof access from inside the house and he'd need to go up the two story ladder to reach our roof-top unit. Turns out we only needed a small repair on the AC unit to get it running again. The toilet was more complicated and needed to have the whole tank system replaced. I was pretty surprised by this and had major sticker shock at the price, but I really have no clue how much plumbing repair normally costs. The plumbing technician was very helpful in explaining everything he was going to do and why. The toilet is running beautifully now, so I guess it was all needed! Overall a positive experience.

My A/C has died on me twice. Both times technicians from Thomas E. Clark came out, assessed the problem and got it up and running again. The first time, it needed a new motor. The technician recommended that I look into replacing my ancient A/C system, but did not pressure me when I said I would prefer to fix it. The second time, the unit needed a new fuse. Each interaction I've had with this company has been extremely professional, uncomplicated and honest. I would highly recommend them for any HVAC work you need in your home.

They were very good. They did the installation of the central heating and air-conditioning for the house. They are excellent providers, they are a little pricey, however once the guy says he is going to do something he does it and I don’t have to look back. I did not quite believe it at the beginning when he said it, but he said that it was actually going to be cheaper in the long run. He said that I would not have to pay as much in gas or electricity and lo and behold last winter and summer I did not have to pay as much in gas and electricity. He was absolutely correct, I thought it was a line of jazz, I really did, but he told me the truth. The man told me the truth. They are a little pricey, but they are wonderful. I don’t have to look back on them at all. They do plumbing, but I haven’t had any plumbing done in a while.

I called yesterday afternoon and a plumber from Thos Clark came to my house midday today (Saturday). In addition to the main valve replacement ($380), I also asked him to demolish the existing ancient hose valve, bib and faucet install a new assembly a few feet further down the cold water line from its existing location ($150). I thought both quotes were a tad on the high side, but then again I don't use plumbers that often and so maybe that's the going rate now. Great advice to turn the water off at the street and put in a new quarter-turn ball valve above the existing gate valve -- leaving the latter where it is so as not to disturb/potentially break the lead pipe feeding it. Overall, extremely happy with the work performed. I've never used Thos. Clark before but definitely these will be my go-to guys in the future if the need ever arises. Plumber was on time (early, actually), knowledgeable and courteous. He did the work quickly and to high quality.

These guys are fantastic! They recommended moving the tankless water heater out of our attic (which is not climate controlled) into a closet in the kitchen. They noted that existing gas meter was not adequate, and arranged with gas company to upgrade meter. Came and did a wonderful job of installing new water heater, and reworking some very bad and dangerous water and gas line arrangements that had been done by previous owner. Discovered that the gas line had a leak, and spent several hours in our very small crawl space tracking the leak down. Brought out the pipe and showed us exactly what was wrong (pencil lead diameter hole in our main gas line underneath our house!) and replaced all of our gas lines. They started the project on Thursday as scheduled. The gas line problem added some time to the project, but Thomas Clark's crew came back Friday morning with 3 guys instead of 2 and ALL of them stayed until well after 10:30 p.m. on a Friday night (and it was the Friday night at the beginning of Memorial Day Weekend, too) to be sure we had gas (since our stove uses it) and hot water for the holiday weekend. The guys were great, cleaned everything up after they were done, and made sure we were happy before they went home. Have used them again for installing the water line for new refrigerator's ice maker. Same report: came on time, did the job well, made sure I was happy. We will definitely use them again.

The job got done quickly and competently, but does that justify charging $338 for a problem diagnosed in less than a minute and fixed within 15 min.? This repair was so simple that I considered paying the min. and sending him on his way, but I didn't want my wife and children to be cold because I didn't have the time to immediately go out and get the part. These guys charge a $69 call fee, which is fine, it covers their travel. But to turn around and charge me an additional $250 for a repair that was easier than replacing a spark plug is ridiculous. I'd laugh in the face of any mechanic who tried to do that, and I made it very clear to the technician that even though I was paying the exorbitant fee, I wasn't happy about it and wouldn't be giving them my business in the future. I recommend you do the same.

Response from Thomas E Clark Inc
I certainly understand the member's consternation. I recently called an appliance company to fix my LG refrigerator. I provided them with the model & serial number of the unit and the error code it was giving. With that information, they were able to order the part and arrive ready to make the repair. Five minutes and $350 later our refrigerator was working again. I appreciated the efficiency as I put a high premium on my very busy wife's time. We paid for their knowledge & expertise. The member placed a "No Heat" call with us at 12:30pm with instructions that no one would be available until after 3:30pm. We made arrangements to accomodate the member and had a tech there by 3:30pm. He quickly and correctly diagnosed the problem, quoted the member the price, for his approval, before making the repair and then made said repair. The member had heat within four hours of their initial call. It is extremely unfair to penalize us for our proficiency. It is very expensive to employ and retain high quality technicians and sufficiently equip service trucks to meet our customer's needs. We go to great expense and effort to be prepared to solve our customer's problems. I'm sorry that the member finds it necessary to question our integrity and undermine our reputation only after he made a conscious choice to have us repair his heating system. For the record, after the Angie's List discount, the repair was $318. Michael S. Hartman, President

I contacted Mike Hartman about diagnosing a problem with a boiler that had been installed 4 years ago by another contractor. Had used Clark on another job and was satisfied. Talked to Mike a few times explaining the situation but when it came time to schedule an appointment I couldn't get in touch with him or get him to return a call. Even told receptionist to have someone call me if Mike was no longer interested in the job so I could move on to another company. Didn't even get this little courtesy. I wasted a whole week without heat because of this guy. It's now Friday and will have to wait til Monday to get service. If you don't mind paying a premium (prices are high) to deal with an arrogant, unprofessional staff, this is the company for you. The technical staff is quite good though.

The plumber was very knowledgeable and what i thought might be a "major repair" turned out to be a relatively minor thing so the work was way under my budget :) He could have told me it was more serious than it actually was and i wouldn't have known the difference. It took him less than five minutes to tell me that the rubber seal under the bath tub's drain is old and need to be replaced and that was it !!! :) :) :)
Description of Work: I noticed a wet spot on the ceiling of my kitchen and believed it was water leakage from the mbr jacuzz bath tub. I was under the impression, and many friends had suggested, that the plumber would have to cut off a section of the ceiling in order to find out the exact location of the leak. I therefore was expecting a relatively "major" repair along with the bill :(

The tech arranged for us to speak with their office to get the service fee waived for next week when they come to install a new toilet in our residence. He quoted us a good price on the combination toilet plus installation and haul-away of the old toilet, and we will not have to pay the $99 service fee when they come out for that next week. That helps because the cost of the entire visit from today seemed a bit much. We payed a different company half that to come out and unclog a drain, which took twice as long. In short, the Thomas folks are competent enough, but if it weren't for the waiver of the service fee to install the new toilet, it wouldn't have been worth the price.
Description of Work: We asked them to look at two different toilets in two different apartments. One in our home and the other in an apartment I use separately as a work space. The one in our home is an old toilet and we've had two separate plumbers make repairs on it in the past three years. Recently it stopped giving us a complete flush--it's just waiting to die, basically. The tech tightened the chain and left it at that because it's not worth the money to do anything more to it. We'll get a new toilet for that bathroom soon. The other toilet was having a problem where it would lose water and continuously start re-filling. The tech fixed that problem by replacing the fill valve and the flapper system. That repair was $223. Good God. A year's guarantee, though, a saving grace. Then there's a $99 service fee for every visit. So I feel like the cost was a little exorbitant for the level of repair that was actually done. The tech was polite and reasoanble. He covered his shoes before entering the apartment, which I really appreciate. And he seemed to know what was what.
