I recently purchased an older home in Woodbridge, during the process my realtor recommended I have a Radon test. The test revealed slightly higher levels of radon gas than the EPA recommends. I first emailed Radon Abatement Services, John emailed me back right away. After my initial call we played phone tag (because of my schedule) but we finally connected, he asked me a few questions about the house, explained the process and gave me a quote. He said the cost would depend upon a couple factors, gravel under the slab, etc. He was very pleasant and answered all my questions. After I signed and emailed the contract back to him, Jim Humphreys called me the very next day and we scheduled the appointment (we play phone tag to)! Jim said it would take four to six hours to complete the job. Jim arrived just when he said he would, I took him to the laundry room where he located the spot to put the pipe (next to the washer) and showed me exactly what he would be doing. After that I went upstairs and left him to do his work. The work actually took less time then he said it would and the quote was on target. After he finished he showed me the system and how it worked, told me about the pressure gauge and what to watch for, and provided the Radon test kits. Very professional and pleasant experience.
Description of Work: Radon Abatement Services, after looking at the laundry room and explaining what would be done they got right to work. They ran a pipe from the floor/slab foundation the wall behind our washer, which is located at the back of the house, then through the wall to the outside. The pipe now runs up to the roofline where the air now vents. They installed a very easy to read/understand pressure gauge to monitor from time to time to be sure the vent is operational. The air/gas under the slab of our home is now vented through the pipe via the electric motor, which is hard wired. They also provided us with short and long term radon detectors. Great craftsmanship, very clean work.

Excellent service from Jim Humphryes. He came out twice - once for the initial work, which ended up being more than he thought needed to be done. He rescheduled for the following week after the parts came in, and arrived promptly when he said he would. The work (an entire system overhaul on our radon system) took only a couple of hours. The end result looks great, and sounds so much better than the old system. I'd strongly recommend requesting Jim Humphryes directly based on my experiences. He was a pleasure to deal with. He suggested replacing the entire system at some point (and I agree, it needed it), but didn't push that at all. We ended up doing the full system. The cost he estimated was exactly what the final bill end up at.
Description of Work: Old radon system removed. New ventilation and fan installed. Exterior radon switch installed.

After searching on Angie's list I chose Radon Abatement Services. My husband and I are very happy with our choice. After calling and answering some questions about our new home (built in 1980) they arrived on time on the scheduled day and went to work. My husband stayed home while they were there, and when I came home after the work was done I couldn't tell they had been there, they did a good job of keeping the pipe discreet, not at all unsightly. The pipe they used to vent the radon from our foundation was the same white as our laundry room wall. My husband showed me the where to check the pressure to be sure the venting was operational (we should check it from time to time), which really takes just a glance, not at all difficult. Outside, behind our home, the color blended in with our siding color so it was not very noticeable. What a relief the work is done and done so expertly. Healthy air to breathe and great peace of mind was well worth the price.
Description of Work: Radon Abatement Services arrived on time on the scheduled day and went to work. They worked in our laundry room and ran a pipe from the floor/slab foundation, then ran the pipe along the wall behind our washer (located in the rear of our home) then through the wall to the outside. The pipe now runs up to the roofline where the air now vents. They installed a simple pressure gauge that is very easy to read/understand for us to monitor from time to time to be sure the vent is operational. The air/gas under the slab of our home is now vented through the pipe via the electric motor, which is hard wired. They also provided us with short and long term radon detectors. Great craftsmanship, very clean work.

John Swett is my hero. He came to my house which was out of his normal service area. We recently bought an older house with an oddly shaped basement, some of it built on a pre-existing foundation. John assessed our situation and came up with a 3 staged plan for his recommendation. We started with his first recommendation to see if it solves the problem. From there we are going to do a long term soak test to make sure the entire basement is covered. John was very honesty in hist assessment and what he could and could not guarantee. His approach of attack the problem and wait and see and retest fits us perfectly as we can address the issue in stages instead of going in full force and throwing a ton of money at it if it is not necessary. John was very responsive and personable and very gracious. The day he travelled so far it was simply pouring buckets outside and yet he still made it out there and was on time give or take a few minutes. He sent the proposal and contract that night, somehting that I find is very rare, and within 3 days was out at my house installing the system. His crew was also very polite, responsive, knowledgable, and timely. I could not have been more pleased with this experience. When I saw his reviews I just knew I wanted to work with him and I am so grateful that he worked with us and would highly recommend him to anyone.

I called and received a quote based on the age of the house and the description of the location of the unfinished utility room. It was $800. This seems to be the standard pricing for this company. I scheduled work a few days later for the installer who works in Virginia. He arrived on time the morning work was scheduled. It took about 3.5 hours for him to do the work, and as promised, it ended up being $800. The area was kept tidy and he installed the PVC piping through the side of the wall as I had asked instead of the corner where most people like it. This was to tuck the outside PVC piping (not terribly attractive) against the chimney. He was incredibly thorough in describing the system to me. He explained what to look for if it stops working and what to troubleshoot. He reiterated that they are more than happy to stand by their workmanship and if anything happens, he will come back out. Upon completion, he gave me the radon tester and I reminded him I was an Angie's List member, so he ran back out to the truck to get the long-term radon test as well. I haven't yet set the tests up. He recommended I wait to do the long term test until winter. My radon levels were about 7.5 before I had them come out. John promised the levels to be under 4 (EPA limit) with his system. I will edit this report after I perform the test if need be (unlikely). As I said the system isn't terribly attractive but it is whisper quiet and has given me the peace of mind to let my children spend time in the basement again.
Description of Work: Install standard radon abatement system. This included drilling a hole in the exterior wall and one in the floor to the subflooring, running PVC piping from the subfloor through the utility room (vertically) and out the side of the house and installing the fan.

John was extremely responsive. He came out to look at the house a few hours after our first contact. He was very professional and gave us a clear quote. He answered all of our questions in a non-patronizing way. His team came out and installed the system a day early (storm-related) and were done in a few hours. No mess. Very efficient.

From the very beginning, Radon Abatement was very professional and responsive. John gave a very specific price quote and everything from start to finish went exactly as he said it would. The team of two was late arriving but the reason was very understandable and ultimately didn't amount to that much of a delay. They apologized and got to work right away when they arrived. They were professional, worked efficiently, got the system installed and running within a few hours, and cleaned up after they were done. They explained what they were going to do before they did it and then explained what I needed to know after it was running. We have a sump pump system so it was a very routine job and as such we paid exactly what John had quoted us. Given all the issues we have had with several contractors already in our 2 days of home ownership, I was very pleased with this one. I highly recommend them!!
Description of Work: They put in a radon abatement system in a we just bought, that although it "passed" it's radon test still wasn't low enough to make me feel good about it.

From the initial discussion about the work and scheduling with John was very pleasant. John was very knowledgeable of the process and was very professional. The installation was very smooth. The crew arrived on time and made the installation. They made a drill in the foundation to retrieve the gas and installed the exit pipe to the side. The installation was very sturdy. I believe that I can say that because both of my neighbors had Radon remediation and ours seem superior in the quality of exhaust pipe. When completed, they crew cleaned everything and there were no traces of their work. I have an electronic device monitoring radon level and the the original 3.1 is currently 1.6 after a month of installation. We are very pleased with Radon Abatement Services and would recommend them without hesitation.

The entire process from the initial email to the actual installation went smoothly.
Description of Work: We had a radon mitigation system installed. From the initial email requesting information, Radon Abatement services was nothing but professional. They contacted us immediately by phone after my initial email and were able to provide a quote over the phone based on the information. They immediately sent an estimate and were understanding when I said that I could not do the work right away, because we needed to get approval from our homeowners association. As soon as I emailed them to let them know we had approval, they called back immediatly and were able to come out and install the system 3 days later. They were on time, clean, and professional. If I could give them an A+++ on Angie's list I would. I highly recomend them to anyone for radon mitigation.

They normally give quotes over the phone but as we thought there maybe some issues with the installation due to our wooden porch and electric meter etc. being in the way, John came out to have a look. He was very knowledgeable and recommended taking the pipe through the garage a short way to the outside wall to avoid the obstructions. The team that came were very professional, explaining everything to me. The work was excellent, very clean, everything well sealed. The fan is whisper quiet. I would definitely recommend this company.

Very good experience with this company. John was very responsive in answering messages and emails, and managed to schedule the installation for us on short notice. Crew came on time and did a good job with installation and clean-up. The system looks like it was part of the house from the beginning. Our radon level went from 4.1 to 0.8 with the system installed. Their website is great as a resource for researching different types of radon reduction system.

Requested a quote online, received a verbal quote followed up by an emailed written contract, scheduled the work. Workman showed up on time and installed the system. Pre-treatment radon levels via mailed in tests and also a permanent (movable) Safety Siren Pro Series3 Radon Gas Detector were between 7.2 and 11 pCi/L - far in excess of the EPA action level of 4. After the system was installed the readings are down to between 0.4. and 0.6 pCi/L. We are very happy with the results!

Outstanding. Could not have asked for anything more. We had been experiencing high levels of Radon in our basement area. I measured levels above 6 pCI/L using a a very good electronic radon detector. I located Radon Abatement Services on Angie's List and received an on-line quote from them after answering a number of questions about my home. The quote was very reasonable and well within the range that I expected to pay. They met all of the qualifications you should look for in hiring a radon abatement service. They do no radon testing to preclude any conflict of interest with their clients. The installer was outstanding, knew what had to be done and completed the installation to my satisfaction in about 6 hours for the quoted price. I'm pleased to say that my radon level has dropped to 1.2 pCI/L since the system was installed a little less than 2 months ago. If you need a radon abatement system definitely call Radon Abatement Services.
Description of Work: Installed a radon abatement system in the basement level of my home. The installation included the drilling of a 3 in hole through the concrete floor, cleaning out the crushed rock substrate below the hole, installing a 3 in. PCV pipe up the side wall and through the concrete basement foundation wall, installing a radon exhaust fan on the exterior of the house, running PCV pipping up the side of the house to a location above the roof line. The PCV pipe was capped to prevent 4 legged intruders. The fan was hard wired from an internal line in the basement and an external on/off switch was installed. All areas were cleaned and all residue was removed. The system was tested and instructions on it use were provided. A short and long term test kit were provided for testing of the system.

We needed to get our radon system moved from the side of the house given it was old and was too large for our small house. I found Radon Repair on the Angie's List and they came out to the house the next day. They provided a good solution in which the radon system was smaller and more concealed. They set up a time to install the system around my schedule and the system looks great. The system actually took a bit longer than normal to install however the owner kept to his word and only charged the quoted amount, even after giving me a $50 discount!!!! Would highly recommend and would use again in the future. Thanks Vince

I had the house tested for Radon and we had a high enough reading to want to address the problem. I spoke to the owner and he came by and gave me an estimate in February. I was not able to get around to it for a few weeks but when I called he was able to schedule the work the following week. The installers were very professional in their manner and work. They left no mess. They were in and out in one afternoon. I had the system installed in the middle of the house because I had the utility room, hall closet and attic to work through. I am glad I didn't have to install it outside because it would have been unsightly. The fan is whisper quiet and they secured it well so that it does not vibrate. You would not even know the system is in the house. It is out of the way and quiet. I did not price this job out. I wanted to go with someone with a good reputation. I also got a free kit to re-administer the radon test. I haven't gotten around to it so I plan to do it in the next week. While on the roof they noticed a problem on the roof with a flashing and they told me about it so I called call the roofer. In the interim, they placed a silicone seal as a quick fix-it til I could call someone. I don't go on my roof so I wouldn't have known so I felt they went beyond their service by temporarily fixing it and letting me know.
Description of Work: I had a radon extraction system placed in my home. Unlike most systems, I had the space to run the system in the house so there is no unsightly PVC tubes running on the outside of my home.

My husband called John Swett to inquire about the service and the process. John spent over 30 minutes on the phone answering questions and describing what needed to be done. He put us on the schedule for the following week. John called me before the treatment to tell me what to expect and the name of the trained, licensed, certified technician that would be coming to my home. The abatement specialist showed up on time and he was courteous and professional. He cleaned up after himself and showed my husband around after the work was done and educating him on the motors and shut off switches; showing him what work was done to both the inside and outside of our house. The technician then gave him the testing kits and explained the best time and place to take the tests for accurate readings. My husband was so happy with the work that the technician did that when I got home from work, he walked me around the house (both inside and out). He showed me what was done and he stated multiple times that he was impressed with the professionalism and expertise of the gentleman that did the work. (I must apologize for not mentioning the technician's name. I'm ashamed to say that I have forgotten it.) We agonized over the decision of hiring a company to fix this problem for over a year. We were finally comfortable going with Radon Abatement Services because of the consistently excellent ratings that they have received on Angie's List for the last several years. I'm happy to say, they lived up to their reputation and absolutely exceeded our expectations.

We contacted John Swett at Radon Abatement Services because we had two high readings for radon in our home. Mr. Swett was extremely knowledgeable about the subject, but he engaged in no hard sell or scare tactics. He came to our home to give an estimate and described in detail how the radon abatement process was carried out. We decided to go ahead with the work. The were very professional and cleaned up thoroughly after their work. An independent radon test done after the work was completed came back with a 0.6 result, well below the EPA recommendation. We could not be more delighted with our experience with Mr. Swett and his wonderful company.

From the time that I called Radon Abatement to the time the system was installed, there was nothing but professionalism. I had someone come out and give an estimate. I'll admit the first time they came, I missed the appointment, but John was still willing to come out again the next day. This company was rewarded with an acceptance of the job and performed with no delay or lack of professionalism. I would recommend this company again.
Description of Work: I had a radon reduction system placed in my home. Two gentlemen showed up at the prescribed time, laid down dorp cloths so they didn't track dirt across the carpet. They started inside by finding my sump pump along with it's circuit in the circuit panel. They drilled a pilot hole in the wall from inside. They then went to the exterior and finished the hole large enough to put a PVC pipe through. One guy stayed outside and worked on the stack that went up along side of the house, while the other came inside with my already pre-bought fan. He wired up the circuit and pre-staged the fan with wiring. He then went outside and helped his partner complete the stack, then wired up the fan to the outside. They finished the outside portion, then returned to the basement to seal up the sump pump hole with a custom cover. They turned the system on and tested it. This time frame took them almost 3 hours.

I called 3 companies to ask about having a radom remediation system installed. When I first called to get information from Radon Abatement Services, John was in the middle of an installation. He explained that it would be better if he could call me back when he could talk without distractions, and he called me back within the hour. He assessed my situation over the phone, asked very appropriate questions about radon level, age of the house, layout, type of basement, etc., and immediately gave me a feeling of confidence in his knowledge and abilities. John also told me exactly how much it would cost ($800) and emailed me a written fixed price quote (as opposed to cost-based, which can fluctuate based on variations in the job). I was able to schedule my radon mitigation system installation within days. On the day of installation, Martin and his assistant arrived within 10 minutes of the schedule time, which I found impressive considering they had to commute around the beltway in rush hour. Martin did a walk-thru of the basement and exterior of the house to determine the most appropriate location for the pipe and fan. Once the location was determined, they did their thing without any issues. It took about 3 hours. My only TINY complaint was that I wasn't warned that the cracks were sealed with sticky stuff, and I stepped in it...maybe give customers a heads up about that. I have no idea if the radon system actually works at reducing the radon in the house because I have not had it re-tested yet. I hope to never need this service again personally, but I would definitely recommend Radon Abatement Services to family and friends.

We needed to reduce our radon level, which at last reading was 4.3. I chose this company based on Angie's List ratings. John called me back right away and after a thorough conversation over the phone, he provided 2 estimates based on whether or not gravel would be found under the slab of our home. He explained the reason for the cost difference, which made sense to me. John volunteered to drive by our house to get a better assessment of the job involved. He e-mailed me the estimate as a follow up. On the day before my appointment, he sent an e-mail confirmation and also called. His guys, led by Marvin, called when they were on their way over, and arrived on time. After assessing the floorplan, they suggested 3 options for where to place the pipe; and I chose one. John came by later to check up on his team's progress. He explained how to check the fan to make sure it is properly working. He explained the test kits and how to use them. He offered his help when I am ready to do the test, so he could go over it again. After he left, Marvin finished the job and reviewed their work with me. I thought their work was clean and the cost was exactly as John quoted. I haven't run the followup radon test yet, but I expect it to be significantly reduced -- they guarantee a reading of 2. Overall, I found this company to be responsive, professional and competent. They worked efficiently and neatly. Customer service was stellar.
