The head guy came over a week ahead of the service date, inspected the area where work was to be performed, and provided an estimate of the cost. He also brought up potential scenarios that could come up, and how they would be dealt with. The workers performing the service arrived on time; they had called to confirm the precise arrival time several hours before arriving. They were very good about explaining what they were doing and how they were going to do it. They provided an estimate of the time it would take to complete the work, which turned out to be spot-on, about 2.5 hours. When the work was complete, the foreman gave me a complete rundown on the work they performed and how the equipment operated. They did a great job cleaning up after they were done. When we used the follow-up radon test, we were surprised by the results. Our radon level plunged from about 8.0 pc/L to 0.4 pc/L, which is basically the level in the atmosphere. So to recap, the project was completed on time, on budget, and was a complete success.

Radon Abatement Services was very professional through our entire experience. The person who answered the phone when I first called to request an estimate was very knowledgeable and asked the necessary questions to get me a quality estimate quickly. I received a proposal in writing that same day. Our work was scheduled within a week of accepting the proposal, and the installer called personally to confirm the appointment and any relevant details. He arrived on time for our scheduled appointment and did an excellent job with the installation. We are very pleased with this company. My only other comment is that we should have asked how long the installation would take because it took longer than I expected (about 4 hours) and that would have been nice to know for planning purposes. Definitely not the company's fault as I did not ask the question, but just some advice if you are planning to have this service performed.
Description of Work: Radon Abatement Services installed a radon abatement system (fan) in our basement to reduce the radon levels in our home. They also supplied a short-term and long-term testing kit to monitor the effectiveness of the system.

A team of two workmen showed up at 9 am. The lead reviewed what I had discussed with the contractor and then began work. One workman drilled the hole in the concrete floor of the basement and inserted the exhaust tube. He then drilled a hole in the basement wall to run the tube out and up through the deck. He had to drill through both the deck and the overhang on the roof to run the exhaust pipe to a level that would release the gas exhaust at a safe location away from windows and doors. A small fan was installed in the exhaust pipe to ensure consistent flow. They sealed up around the hole in the floor where the pipe was installed, and sealed a number of small cracks in the foundation and floor so that the exhaust would be drawn from under the concrete pad. When the work was completed, the lead showed me the pressure gauge on the exhaust pipe that indicated that the system was working properly and what to check for on a regular basis. He then showed how they had hooked the fan into the electrical system and which fuse controlled the fan. They cleaned up everything and were on the road in about 4 and a half hours after leaving me two test kits and instructions on how and when to place them in the basement. The workmen were very professional and thoroughly knowledgeable about the work they needed to perform. They went to work immediately after arriving and worked quickly and nonstop until the job was done. It couldn't have gone smoother. And the results have been ideal.
Description of Work: Our initial test revealed a radon level of 7.2 pCi/L (picocuries--a measure of radon concentration) before the radon mitigation efforts were complete. (EPA says anything over 4.0 should be reduced to minimize exposure to the gas. The state of Virginia recommends that homeowners consider taking some action at levels between 2 and 4 pCi/L.) Radon Abatement Services looked at pictures I provided via email to determine the best way to attack the problem. John Swett, head of the company, and I discussed some of the potential issues we might encounter in the work because of the age of the house. He gave me two estimates, depending on whether there was gravel under the pad or not. Both were at or below other estimates we had had. His team put in a ventilation system consisting of a ventilation tube placed into a hole drilled and sealed in the basement floor, piped out the back wall of the lower level of the house, and up through our deck past the roof, with a small fan installed in the pipe to ensure a proper exhaust of the gas. Subsequent testing revealed that our radon level is now 0.6 pCi/L, well below the acceptable standard and considerably less than the average 3.1 pCi level for Fairfax county .

I didn't have to have the work done due to the owner's honesty.
Description of Work: I am selling a house in Linthicum, MD, and the buyer's agent informed me that they had done a radon test and that I was 15 times the limit of radon. I called the owner John, and he noticed that I was quoted in the European measurement, bqs, instead of the American units. When converted, I was under the EPA limit. This was obviously a scam, although it was described as a mistake to me. I am extremely grateful to the owner, John, who saved me over $1000.

Great experience. We had received two quotes prior to selecting this company. The gentleman who had come out to provide the cost estimate had literally done over 50 homes in my neighborhood, including one across the street, so he knew what he was working with in terms of what was underneath the home's foundation. On the day of the installation, Marvin and two other gentlemen arrived. They checked in with me and my husband throughout the process to confirm that we were aware of what they were doing, and to get responses from us during certain decision points in the process. They were professional, well-coordinated and cleaned up upon completion of the project. They even applied concrete over a small but unsightly plumbing hole that we found in the basement foundation. My husband and I would happily recommend them to others.

The installers were running a little behind in their schedule but other than that the installation was flawless. It took close to an hour and a half from their arrival until their departure to perform the services. Before the service, my radon measurements were above 2 and sometimes as high as 3.9 in my basement. I spoke with John Swett and he told me that a blower/fan in my attic should be all I need to get the readings down below 2. I was happy to hear that and John explained what would be done by his employees and that I would be getting 2 test kits to evaluate the installation results. Now, using my meter, the readings are in the low 1 to 1.2 measurement range. The 48 hour measurement reading was 0.4 as measured by AccuStar labs. I look forward to finding out what the long-term test reading is when the time arrives. I would highly recommend John's company for radon abatement.

Before finishing my basement, I needed to install a radon remediation system. I found Radon Abatement Services via Angie?s List and submitted a request for quote via their website. Within 24 hours John Swett called me to discuss my needs, and within another 24 hours I received an email estimate. The estimate was a one-page itemization of proposed work: Sub-slab ventilation system through basement floor or custom made sump cover out left side/rear wall of building to a radon fan and continuing up exterior of building to above roof line; sealing of sumps or floor drains if necessary; sealing of large cracks and slab to wall joint if necessary; and, for Angie?s List members, a complimentary long-term Alpha Track test kit. The estimate also has a bullet list of guarantee and terms, which answers many of my questions of what to expect. I accepted their proposal and scheduled work. On the day of installation, Mr. Humphrey arrived and spent a good four hours installing the system. I was very impressed with the care he took in everything. He made sure the pipe going up along the house was straight and neat, the fan was level, and the pipes inside the house as unobtrusive as possible. When he was done, the system was a thing of beauty. There is just something to a quality installation that you can see, where all the parts fit together so well the result looks as if it?s sprung fully formed and always been there. At the end he walked me through the operation of the system, how to read the monitor, what to do if we have to ever cut the seal to the sump pump cover, and how to use the radon detection kit he left behind. I was extremely happy with the work and can heartily recommend Radon Abatement Services and especially Mr. Humphrey.
Description of Work: Install radon remediation system through sump pump cover, out left rear wall of building to a fan, and up through PVC pipe to above the roof line. Secure PVC pipe to side of building. Install eye-level monitor in basement. Install on/off switch at fan. Seal sump pump cover. Tie fan electrical into existing line.

Overall, I was very very pleased with the installation, the installers, the equipment. All staff were professional, communicative, helpful, friendly, and very neat. Everything was cleaned up. Would recommend them with no hesitation. Thanks!
Description of Work: Company installed a radon remediation system. Because the basement was finished and the utility room could not be used as the location of the sub-slab pipe, the owner, John Swett, recommended installing a system with the pipe & access to the sub-slab from the exterior of the house. Mr. Swett was very patient and responsive in answering my questions. The installers arrived on time and installed the system in 2.5 hrs. The installation was done neatly and hidden between a window bumpout and the chimney. They explained how to operate and maintain the system. They left me a long term radon test but not the short term one. Update 16 Jun: Mr Swett called and offered to mail me the short term radon test device (so that I could check on the new system if needed. Apparently there was a mis-communications in whether I wanted the test device or not. Once again, I am so very impressed with his responsiveness and desire to make things 100% right. I'm just sorry that I caused him concern - that was not my intent.

I'm sorry the team did not leave the customer a short-term test kit as well. There must have been an oversight by the team leader. However, I will gladly send the customer the kit via mail. Had I known earlier, I would have done so immediately.

The overall installation was excellent. The crew came exactly as scheduled with all the equipment and supplies which they need. They worked both efficiently and effectively and completed the installation within about 2 hours. The installation was very neat and clean and complete. The work area inside and outside the house was cleaned up. Finally, they provided instructions on how to operate and maintain the system.
Description of Work: Radon Abatement Services installed a complete radon elimination system in our home. This required Radon to drill a hole in the basement floor and through the side wall, install a pipe from below the basement floor to above the roof line, install a fan which operates continuously on the outside of the house in-line in the pipe, and install and meter and an electrical line.

Radon Abarement Services accommodated my limited schedule due to health issues and arranged for an expedited appointment over the phone. Mr. Jim Humphreys arrived on time, worked four hours to install the system, was professional and competent and tested the system for me before cleaning up and departing. He left me with both short term and long term test kits, as well as a guarantee that the radon reduction system would bring my radon levels to below 2.0. This was not an easy install, because it involved drilling through the framing boards over the basement cinder blocks to access the garage from the basement. I was very pleased with the entire performance of this company.

Owner, John Swett, came to look at my setup after my house tested very high for radon. He told me what his guys would do to remove radon from the house, described the process & the system in great detail, spoke about two possible options, depending on what they found under the ground. He said that most likely, there would not be gravel due to the age of my house (100 + years) and the cost if that was indeed true would be slightly higher ... they had to dig two holes in basement floor instead of one. (I think I have that right ... Not exactly my area of expertise!!) The workmen came right on time, did a perfect job, were personable, professional, easy to have around, and cleaned up after everything. Truth be told, this is the kind of workers I wish I could find in every home repair/improvement category. After several days, I retested with the kit provided, sent it off to the lab to be tested. The results were excellent. Radon levels were almost non-existent. When I called John to tell him, he already had the results as well, and though he was quite pleased, he didn't just take the money & run. He told me the importance of retesting in the fall. This guy represents Integrity with a capitol I. I am truly impressed, and that is not easy to do ;) I HIGHLY RECOMMEND THIS COMPANY WITHOUT RESERVATION!!!

The process went very well. John Swett was exremely helpful and knowledgeable when I called and very reachable. We devised a Plan A and Plan B in case Plan A didn't solve the problem. Plan A was very successful, with very low levels of radon in the reteting, well below the guaranteed results and well below recommended limits. John knew the Barcroft neighborhood from prior work there and the typical foundation designs there from the 1950's.The company was busy so there was a two week wait for the installation. But they came on time and finished the work in a very timely manner, and very cleanly and with minimum intrusiveness.

Jim Humphryes of Radon Abatement Services installed radon mitigation systems for my single family home in Sterling. The original/prior radon level was 5.8 in the basement, I ran couple of short-term radon testings a week after Jim installed the system, and now the reading is 0.4 which is normal. I strongly recommend Jim and Radon Abatement Services for any radon mitigation work. Jim and John are very professional, the price is very reasonable at $800, and quality is exceptional. Best of all, my radon level is now normal, and moldy smell in the basement is gone. I am so happy to use their services and will recommend them to all of my friends and neighbors. 5-star company. Keep up the good work.

This was as close to perfect as it gets with a contractor. The three-man RAS crew showed up earlier than expected (traffic on the beltway wasn't bad). They quickly got to work and were completely finished in less than an hour and a half. All three were true professionals who knew what they were doing and did it very well. They also cleaned up the job site after they were finished. I highly recommend Radon Abatement Services to anyone who needs a radon mitigation system. The owner was very responsive to my email request for an estimate and worked with me to schedule the work quickly. This is a first rate company. They do not do radon testing so they do not try to sell you more than you need.
