Deck and Shed Pros

It was a pleasure working with Jim. I had a tight budget and he did everything he could to keep costs down, while providing me with safe, functional and very beautiful decks.

Jim was a pleasure to speak with: prompt, professional, friendly and honest. He advised us on the state of our deck and a number of options we could consider, and in the end recommended that we didn't need his services after all. We felt like he was totally trustworthy and not at all bothered that we didn't have work for him after all. It was such a positive experience that we would look to this company first if we need work of this nature done in the future.

We are totally satisfied with the work done. Jim came out in a timely manner and on time as well. He gave us an estimate to replace four deck posts that had begun to rot. We decided to move forward with the job. He scheduled us within a week and his crew came as scheduled. Jim arrived with the crew to get them started. The work was completed in one day. There was no mess left behind and the nearby plants were not damaged. The county inspector came the following day and Jim stopped by to see that all was satisfactory. We are happy with a job well done! (The Baltimore county permit was $450, which is not reflected in the cost of service. Jim handled getting the permit.)

As well as dealing with home repairs can go. Jerry (the company owner) responded quickly to our initial request. He was on time and efficient in evaluating the problem and providing an estimate from which he gave us a proposal. On the day scheduled for repairs, Jerry and his team were on time and thorough in their work. Jerry communicated what they found, what they needed to do, and what it would cost to do it. Jerry and his team were professional and courteous from start to finish. We highly recommend them and would use them again.

We are very happy with our new deck. Jim responded promptly and came to our home to provide an estimate. He was very thorough in explaining all of our options. We signed the contract and our job was placed on the schedule shortly after. The team of workers were very efficient and cleaned up nicely. There was great communication regarding the progress of the job throughout the whole process and Jim personally checked in to be sure we were 100% happy with the work performed. The quality of work is excellent and we highly recommend Maryland Deck and Shed.

The contracting process was quick and the provider started the job quickly. There was an initial delay due to weather, which was understood as a possibility stipulated in the contract. There was also a temporary delay in laborers removing old decking debris, but the company owner intervened quickly to get the debris removed and reschedule work delayed by weather. While construction of the new deck continued, we worked with the provider to revise the dimension of the deck w/steps and work was completed promptly according to the revised schedule as weather improved. A heavy rainstorm washed out some of the soil the provider used to reset evenly the existing patio tiles under the deck that were necessarily disturbed during construction, resulting in some of the titles falling uneven again. The owner was contacted and promptly scheduled work crews to return to reset the tiles evenly again. While there certainly was challenges in this project, weather related and otherwise, throughout the provider was both professional and response to inquires and committed to ensuring the job was finished with a excellent quality deck and the job site looking as it did prior to the work start. Accordingly, I would recommend this provider and would use them again.

Randy, Ryan and Tony did an excellent job on my balcony. Randy was very helpful in the planning stages helping me to determine the best product to replace my deteriorating porch. I wanted low maintenance and durability. We looked at various alternatives based on the specification of my homeowners association and found a perfect balance of materials. The job was small in size however it did take quite a bit of work and planning. Ryan and Tony dismantled my existing balcony and were conscientious in removing the boards with minimal impact on the neighbors below. They were great about cleaning up and going to each of the balconies below to remove whatever debris fell through to their porches. They installed Tigerwood flooring and finished it with a light oil which brought out the luster in the wood. They also installed an almond color vinyl railing. The contrast of textures and colors is lovely and to say the least I am pleased with the end result. Randy, Ryan and Tony worked very well together, professional, friendly and informative. I highly recommend their service and expertise. A great team!

Jim came out right away to give an estimate, and was very responsive when scheduling the appointment. They did a great job doing the work; we are very pleased with the results! I would definitely use them again.

Great service provided. After leaving a voicemail after hours, Jim called me back promptly that night and we set up an estimate for the next day. I needed a quick turnaround for settlement that was to occur the next day. We met the morning of settlement, he inspected the deck and provided a fair estimate based on the deck work that needed to be completed. He is a knowledgeable professional and went out of his way to help me, a first time home buyer with not a clue about decks!

I was able to get a quick appointment. Jim came out and was very professional in his approach and handling of the service call. I was given a report the same day with recommended repairs. Once the repairs were done Jim came out a second time to check the completed work. Overall, I had a pleasant experience with Jim and his staff. I would highly recommend his services.

I called about noon on Thursday, and Jim came out that afternoon. After he discovered a fourth bad post, I decided I'd better check the others (another 7-8 posts) and asked Jim to come back the next afternoon so I could dig around the other posts to check. I didn't find any more bad ones, thankfully. Jim came back that afternoon, and we signed a contract. My concern was that the work be done ASAP, and Jim arranged that the work be done the following Wednesday. I was very happy that it was done quickly, and the workers were very professional and efficient. The posts were actually in much worse shape than expected, and were pretty much being held up by the dirt they were buried in. (I also called my termite company to come and look at the bottom of one of the posts which I asked the deck repair guys to cut off for me. It was indeed termites, but very old long term damage, from before I had termite bait traps installed last year. The damage was hidden beneath the level of the mulch, until this year. They added a couple more traps around the deck for my peace of mind, even though there's no active termite activity in my yard. I didn't know termites would eat pressure treated lumber!)

When our previous contractor installed our brand new deck, he relied on caulking when it comes to prevent leaking in our under-deck shed. It was a disaster! We called at least 10 contractors to fix the problem, but no one wanted to take the job. Then, we found Jim. He was very professional from the first call. After he came to take a look at the job, he spent a couple of hours on the phone with both my husband and me walking us through his proposal, answering questions, and explaining to us our options. He was very knowledgeable and honest! Since our deck was brand new, Jim and his crew were very careful in taking them apart to avoid any additional cost to replace them. Throughout the process, Jim was very hands-on and kept a high standard on every thing they do. A few times, he asked his crew to redo the job because it was not "perfect" without us even noticing the flaw. To deliver the project on time, he and his crew worked even on the morning of Thanksgiving. Now, our shed looks great and stays dry. Thank you for everything, Jim!

Off to a rocky start but the owner made good on all fronts. The workers were courteous and cleaned up the work area daily. The project went on schedule and I am very pleased with the results.

We could not be more pleased with the final three season room. It is absolutely beautiful!!! Bright, sunny and clean. Randy and Jim we great to work with- always kept in touch and were very responsive to any ideas or questions we had. All the MDS employees who worked on the job were delightful. I will definitely use this company again. A++++

We chose MD Deck and Shed because they were a vendor who uses Screen-eze and we wanted less framing and strong screen to withstand abuse by two cats. The quote was reasonable and the jobs as scheduled for a week out. The work started on schedule and took two days. The framing was cut instead of being a continuous piece in all corners which left gapping holes at all corners of the frames. Sealing the holes was not done unless specifically requested and even then, was done with caulk. Many holes were left unsealed after we requested that they be addressed. The porch decking was painted but then the porch door was left sitting against the new paint, leaving a large deformity in the paint. The door that was custom made looks great, but the screening was also not done well and has cuts around the edging. I have made 3-4 attempts to have Randy come back out to address the issues we documented and let him know about, and he has responded each time saying they will come back out, but has never followed through. While we love the porch, the product (screen-eze) is really what makes it rather than the installation by the crew. If a little more attention to detail had been used, we would have had no complaints. Our goal was an outdoor space free of mosquitos, and because of the framing and sealing discrepancies, that goal was achieved to about 90%.

It went quite well. We had a few issues that came up along the way as is typical of a project of this size. Jim was consistently responsive to these issues and he doggedly followed through until the various problems were solved. We want to credit the company with some extraordinary creativity. Our original plan called for a 50 x 4 foot strip of land to be left unpaved for tree planting but we eventually discovered a gas line was there which prevented us from digging. We thought we would have to abandon the plan but MDS then came up with the idea of building a raised planter in which to place the trees with some accent lighting. The final product looks wonderful and is much better than our original plan. It was a brilliant solution and we are extremely grateful for it. We would also like to acknowledge the company's responsiveness when we had some warranty work that needed to be done months after the project was completed. We called Jim and within a week a crew arrived and took care of all the issues very satisfactorily. Our only complaint overall is that the project took longer than expected but this isn't the first time that has happened and some of the delay was due to circumstances that were unanticipated. MDS was also highly responsive to modifications of the project that came up along the way at our request and this accounts for some of the extra time. In summary, these guys are attentive professionals who will follow through and provide a finished product that will probably exceed expectations.

This was one of the BEST experiences we've had working with any contractor ever! We purchased a home in Howard County and there was a laundry list of things to do ranging from swapping out light fixtures to removing crown molding and door trim, working with drywall, paint touch ups and various other handyman type tasks. The crew we worked with (Rich & Carl) were some of the nicest people and they did such a good job that we kept coming up with things for them to help with. The owner, Steve, was also a pleasure to work with - great communication and service. We'll absolutely work with Maryland Deck & Shed at every opportunity going forward.. can't recommend highly enough!

It was as perfect as anything could be. He was a very honest person, I would use him for anything. He was the a wonderful contractor. He was less expensive than any of the other contractors I had gotten estimates from.

There are multiple posts to this review. Please note the first review and subsequent update(s). First Review (7/22/15): This was a difficult review to grade, as you will see below. Overall, I gave a D because it was B work, done quickly, but incomplete. I was trying to repair a few rotten spots on my deck by myself last summer(2014). I found that almost all of the 4x4 posts were rotten and knew I was over my head. Called Maryland Deck and Shed, who we had used the previous year on stairs. They came out the next day, since out deck had no rails, and cut and constructed the posts and handrails. As they were packing up, I noticed a small mistake on the East side of the deck. They quickly fixed the problem. We were told not to stain the new wood until it dried. When we were staining the old wood about a month later, we noticed that they had not correctly removed the 1x10 on the West Side of the deck, next to the house and over the basement door. It looked like a complicated job, so I called them in August to ask them to come out to complete the job. I heard back from our salesman, who said he would take care of it. I didn't hear from him again. I called two or three more times, and complained about the incomplete job. I got a call back from the Owner of the company in the Fall. He said he hadn't heard about this and was argumentative, at first. I was a little argumentative as well. We both calmed down and he said that he would look into this. I have not heard back from them. Over a year later, I can only assume that the company is not going to complete the job as promised. I am disappointed because they had been attentive and helpful in their customer service until this. I hope that it was a blip, and I hope that I hear from them. If I do, I will update the review. Update (8/31/15): After this review, I got a call from the company. They wanted to know about the work that was done. I was asked if I had used a specific contractor, which I didn't remember. After a 20 minute talk, I sent pictures of the proposal, the correctly completed work, and the incomplete work. Jim said he would get back to me. Today, I left a second message for him. No communication for over a month. I am becoming more frustrated with the professionalism of this company. I hope that there is a reason for the lack of communication and that they will take steps to help solve the situation. I will update more, if necessary.

Unlike two other companies that either wouldn't call me back or wouldn't give me an estimate, MD Desk and Shed representatives were always professional and interested in what I wanted to get done. No issue with the patio install and work performed. No issue with the schedule either. Very minor issue with edge of patio after 9 months (small crack in cement edging) but nothing that can't be fixed easily.

Everything was done to my satisfaction. Owner is a man of his word.

Jim, the owner (or co-owner), apologized for his partner (or associate) Randy (who completely failed to follow-through in May and June), and took valuable time away from his vacation to come to my home, inspect my property, and write me an estimate for a deck. I'll compare this estimate to another one I expect to receive tonight, and make my decision. Thanks for going the extra mile, Jim!

Failed to provide an estimate after visiting my home. Failed to respond to my multiple follow-up communications.

So, we took three separate bids for the project and decided on Md Deck and Shed because of our need to get the job done quickly. We were in a very tight spot due to some very poor work done by a previous contractor on completely separate project. These guys sympathized with our plight, and worked with their installers to fit the small job in. The price was right, the work was great, and the timing was spot on. They were responsive, professional, and courteous. Project timeline - set up appointment for estimate received estimate onsite that day called to schedule appointment to start project pd 1/3 and picked color pd 1/3 upon delivery of materials, and work began immediately work completed and we settled total bill Absolutely flawless execution. Thanks for the great deck! And thanks again for working that into your already busy schedule!
