05/25/15 UPDATE: I saw the response from Alan Stevens. I am stunned that he chose to attack me personally and try to intimidate/embarrass me into removing the post instead of addressing the situation. I thought for months how to respond. I wanted to respond with hate, but instead I choose to pray for him. My home is not filthy and my kids are well cared for. Alan came and did a poor job of trying to fix the situation. I had to pay another Contractor to fix his mistakes. Here's the net net: Even if you've seen glowing reviews for Alan, just look at my situation and look how he responded. If you have something go wrong with your project, would you expect the Business Owner to throw you under the bus? That's not reputable or honorable. I'm stunned Angie's List allows Owners like this on their site. I'm not sure I'll ever use Angie's List again. This has been a pretty traumatizing experience. 11/5/14: I removed the original negative review in August 2014 because Alan Stevens asked me to take it down while he would pay for the fixes to the bathroom in exchange for an A review on Angie's list after completion. I thought it was honorable and agreed. While Alan originally agreed to pay for all the repairs, he then decided he would only pay for the labor to fix the floor in the bathroom because replacing the shower door would be too expensive for him. I actually purchased the shower door on my own because it was taking so long. In addition, I waited for 8 weeks for the person Alan sent to do the job. The night before he was to start, Andre Hunter decided to back out of doing the job. I WAITED 8 WEEKS and then the guy pulls out the night before.. Alan then pointed me to someone else who said it would be 2-3 weeks before he *may* take the job. At this point, we've been with an inoperable bathroom for almost 6 months now. Alan has permanently moved to Florida and is not doing any of the work himself. When I told Alan that I thought it best we part ways because he can't do the work himself and this has been drawn out far too long, he sent me a scathing email chastising me for not appreciating his kindness. IT'S BEEN 6 months. Someone who he referred to me originally in May didn't do the work properly and took our cash and ran. We made lots of mistakes there (and you can read the original review that I'm reposting below). But, if he was truly reputable, Alan would've seen to it that this was corrected immediately. He is a nice guy, but he has a temper and surely flashed it on me. I can't in good faith recommend his company. Original post from July 13th, 2014: I researched for a month and got estimates from 5 companies before deciding to use Premier Home Pro. I saw great reviews on Angie's List (I read about 60 of them). I also saw negative reviews, but I read them thoroughly and concluded that a lot of the negative reviews were from people who didn't actually have Premier Home Pro do the work. Alan Stevens, the Owner was out of town and referred me to Brian Matthews. I think Alan should have been clear that he was referring me to Brian, and he was not an Employee of Premier Home Pro. In my opinion, Alan is moving to Florida and is trying to sell his business at some point. He values his good standing on places like Angie's List, so he didn't explicitly say that he was referring Brian to me. I wish he would've told me this. That is my one issue with Alan. If I was told this, I also could have decided if I wanted to go with another company. Brian emailed me (using the signature tag of Premier Home Pro). He came out, gave an estimate and was very knowledgeable in his explanations. Brian came over to see the job with his foreman. I thought he would have had the contract that day, but he said he needed to see the job before he had his guys start. We agreed to the final price and that his team could start demo the next day. We agreed to a price and a start date. We signed a contract on the first day of demo (with Premier Home Pro's) letterhead. I SHOULD'VE GOTTEN THE SIGNED CONTRACT BACK BEFORE BRIAN'S TEAM STARTED WORK, BUT I DIDN'T. He got there bright and early the next day and went through the contract thoroughly. I gave him the 1st of 3 payments and he noted it on the contract, showing the balance due and when it would be paid. Brain said he needed it to be countersigned by Alan and then he'd get me a copy - WHICH WE NEVER DID. So, I have no contract - only emails showing what we agreed to. We agreed to 3 payments. He estimated it would only take 6-8 days. This is how he would get through without getting me the contract, because it would be a pretty quick job. This is one of my first mistakes. They "seemed" honest and started the demo, so I thought it would be okay. The 2nd payment was due on the 4th day and my husband inadvertently gave him payments #2 and #3. This was a horrendous miscommunication between the two of us. But, there was also an extra $500 in the envelope for overages. Once we realized our mistake (around Day 6), my husband called to ask about the extra money. Brian flew into a rage that we questioned his integrity. He then said he "told Alan he wasn't doing the job anymore." That was a lie too - he never talked to Alan. He was now trying to cover his tracks. He refused to take our calls and have his men (who I later found out were illegal/undocumented) come finish the job. He was a little more than halfway through. MY HUSBAND SHOULD'VE COUNTED THE MONEY BEFORE HE HANDED IT OVER TO BRIAN. As I mentioned originally, my husband and I had a HORRIBLE miscommunication. I was out of town when he gave him the 2nd (and inadvertently 3rd) payment. My husband had been working 12-14 hour days and didn't ask for receipt. He probably assumed I would get that. I know, you should never assume..... So, we take full responsibility for not counting before handing it over. And, truth be told, we knew we couldn't prove the extra money was in there. Sure, we were going to ask several times to verify, but we were actually going to chalk that up as a tough lesson that we had to learn. But, we paid for the job and Brian and his Team should've finished. But, we never even got to this point. Brian became defensive, yelled at my husband then refused to take our calls. That is the definition of a crook. I told you we made a lot of mistakes too, and here is another one: WE USED CASH. I know, I cringe as I write this. We were in a circumstance where we had cash and I didn't get it to the bank and get certified checks. Again, I was so stupid and that was my fault. But again, they had started working and things were going along very smoothly. And, interestingly enough, Brian sent his guys for the next few days after my husband gave him the cash. That's the thing: HE DIDN'T CUT AND RUN WHEN HE GOT THE PAYMENTS. HIS GUYS STILL CAME AND WERE STILL WORKING AND THINGS WERE MOVING JUST FINE. He only stopped coming once we confronted him about the money. When we said there was extra money in the envelope, he flipped. My husband called Alan Stevens after Brian refused to call us back and it was the first time Alan ever heard of us having a job with Brian. He said he was referring people to Brian and they were to have some sort of arrangement on fees. But, Brian never told him, used his contracts and kept the money. Alan brought out a great young man and the two of them finished tile, grout, drywall and a host of other things - OUT OF HIS OWN POCKET. He then realized that the guys Brian hired put in the wrong size shower pan, so Alan couldn't re-install the existing shower doors we had. I do wish he'd clarified that he was referring me to Brian. That would have influenced my decision on picking another Contractor. I went with Premier Pro Home because they are licensed in Maryland and had numerous good reviews on their behalf. BRIAN TRADED ON PREMIER HOME PRO'S RECORD. His foreman and other men were on the way the morning of the confrontation. After my husband talked to Brian, he refused to send his crew. As I later found out, it was a crew that was fired by others and was not a crew used by Premier Home Pro. We asked Brian about the contract and he still claimed that Alan should have sent it to us. Alan said he never received any contract and wasn't even aware that Brian took the job. Alan said that Brian did this on his own and was trying to trade on PHP's name and reviews to get clients. Again, this is where it's murky to me. Alan claims they were supposed to split the money from these jobs, but Brian told him he never booked any. So, Brian must've lied and took the jobs but didn't tell Alan. And, Alan was very distracted by his impending move to Florida. So, where are we? My bathroom is still leaking. The mold is not gone, and I tried using shower curtain where the glass door should be and it leaked worse than before. So, I am out $5000 and the job was only half done. I have not had an issue like this before when hiring a company from Angie's List. I also made mistakes - including letting work begin before he returned the contract and paying cash. I didn't want to give a bad review overall to Alan Stevens, but he is caught up in this mess and I can't separate out for Brian. DO NOT HIRE BRIAN MATTHEWS. Here is the contact information he uses: Brian Matthews
[email protected] 202.702.3553 I screwed up royally. But, I hope this can help someone else as they are looking for their job. You need to be clear if it will be Alan Stevens doing the work or if you're being referred. I'm an educated adult but didn't do all the right things to protect myself. I've learned a tough, valuable lesson.
