Called around 1 PM Saturday. Company responded promptly and had a technician there within 2 hours. Bill for service outside regular hours fully explained and reasonable given circumstances. Technician also recommended further service to remedy initial problem. We are hiring them to do the work. Highly recommend.

They arrived on time and performed the work promptly. The electricians were friendly and explained what they were doing and how long it would take to complete the work. Kolb electric sent out two electricians to perform the work. Both electricians completed all of the work as stated. They also explained that Pepco would come out to inspect the work within the next 6 weeks.
Description of Work: Performed a Heavy Up by replacing the electrical panel and entry cable. They also installed an outside light fixture which included the running of conduit pipe to the location of the new light.

Overall, I was very pleased with Kolb Electric's work and would use them again for either emergency service calls or large-scale work. What I appreciated most about this company was their ability across multiple service technicians to think outside the box to offer solutions. The impact of these solutions saved us a lot of money in the end (i.e. we were able to create one less dedicated circuit and drywall cutting was kept as minimal as possible and ultimately was less than I expected). Kolb's customer service was very good overall, as experienced from their 'out of the box' solutions, overall responsiveness, my request for multiple price quotes, and customer service experienced during the work itself. However, I gave them a B on customer service because of a few instances when I wouldn't get a prompt email response and one technician named Vito was condescending and unpleasant. But over the course of the various work, I interacted with 5 Kolb technicians (not including the office) and my experience with the other 4 was outstanding.
Description of Work: Kolb Electric performed the following services: - service call to troubleshoot a circuit issue - replaced a circuit breaker in the electrical box - installed an electrical outlet on the 3rd floor of the house and ran the circuit through the walls to the basement on a dedicated circuit into the box with very minimal wall cutting - installed an exterior light on the home's front porch with an interior light switch requiring conduit on the walls - creating a dedicated circuit and ran it to the basement's electrical box for a 2nd floor bathroom in order to alleviate power from an over-used circuit

He was late, but not horribly so. The work was done VERY quickly.
Description of Work: Found and replaced a burned out breaker on our circuit panel. FYI, a burned out breaker can smell like rotting fish. So nasty. Our panel is pretty old (from the late 70s), so he thought he might have to go to the hardware store for a replacement that would work, but he happened to have a piece in the van that would suffice. He relabeled our panel so we could make better sense of it and showed me how each circuit worked.

I purchased a previously owned home and used Kobe because the previous owner had used them. I assumed they would be familiar with the property. When I called to make the appointment, the very young, unprofessional scheduler asked if the electrical job was a big job. I told this person (I pictured a high school student) that I had no idea how they classify the size of jobs. I described what I needed (electrical wiring for lights and ceiling fans in three rooms.) He indicated that it wasn't a big job and scheduled one electrician. When the electrician arrived -- on time for an 8:00 AM appointment-- the first thing that he said was that it was a big job, so it would take him all day. I had the impression that normally this scope of job would warrant two electricians. As predicted the job took all day -- 8 - 4:30 with a lunch break-- and required another truck coming to bring additional supplies. He was knowledgeable, professional and kind. My only issue was that the service was very expensive. The bill was reduced to $947.47 through a 10% off coupon. The next phase of the project was installing ceiling fans. He offered to come back (once they were purchased) to install them. He indicated that he would keep the ticket open, so my rate would be based on a continuation versus a new appointment. After purchasing the fans, I opted not to use an electrician for the fan installation. However, I realized that the elecrtrician assumed he would be called back for tthis work. As a result, the job was not left in a way that someone else could complete the last phase. I called the company indicating that the job was incomplete. Fans could not be installed. I had to speak to the manager several times before the electrician was sent back out because he kept telling the manager that it was complete. When he finally came, he said that he only came because I was nice. In the end, he provided the missing pieces, told my dad the other items to get and told him how to complete the installation. I have a large fan that needs to go in a room not serviced by Kobe, but price and poor responsiveness if there is a problem keeps me from using them again.

They came a week early to do the installation of the surge protector. I had arranged in advance for them to do some other minor things, including the mounting of a ceiling fan and the switching of two wires in an outlet. The additional work couldn?t be done that day, since I wasn?t prepared for him to be there. I told him that I had to leave, and that he would need to come back to do the additional work. I told him that he could do the installation of the surge protector that day though. He installed the surge protector by cutting a hole in an exterior wall. It was simply a box put in a wall. The cuts were rough-looking and there wasn?t any trim installed. It looked very unacceptable. I called their company and emailed pictures to them. They agreed that it looked unacceptable. We talked about solutions to fix the problem. The first option was to install a surge protector into my electrical panel. He said that he didn?t think that option was as effective or as safe. The second option was to install the surge protector into a box similar to an outlet box and have it covered by a plate. We agreed upon the second option. The same person came back a week later, late, and ill-prepared to do the job. He didn?t have anything to install the box as agreed upon. He mounted the ceiling fan and did the other work. I paid him for that work. I talked to boss again. He sent a different guy out, who was also late for the appointment. He came with a different type of surge protector, one that would install into the electrical box. This solution was rejected initially since the supervisor said this wasn?t as safe or as effective. Even though I had reservations, I agreed to let him install the surge projector in the box. However, this left an empty hole in my wall, which Kolb Electric promised to fix. I rummaged through my garage to find the paint can so that they could fix my wall. I gave him the paint can about a month ago. No one has ever come back to fix my wall. I have called them asking if I can just come get the piece of wall and paint to get the wall fixed myself. I have received no response back. I am now left with a hole in my wall, a surge protector that was deemed not as safe or as effective, and no way to easily match the paint to fix my wall. I?m not too happy with how this situation has turned out.
Description of Work: I purchased a Big Deal for a whole house surge protector.

The electrician arrived on time and got to work very quickly. He determined the short circuit in the top floor of my house was due to a poorly installed ceiling fan in the master bedroom. The wires were twisting as the fan was on, causing them to snap and short out on each other. He removed the fan and blanked the outlet it was on. He then secured two outlets that were hanging very loosely from the wall. All his work was quick and clean and I will certainly use them again.
Description of Work: The top floor of my newly bought house had the electricity going off at random intervals. The electrician determined the issue quickly and fixed it just as quickly. He also secured some loose outlets that the previous lazy owners installed.

The first ceiling fan was installed quickly with no problems. The second fan was not so easy. Apparently a different "housing" unit was on the truck and it had to be "adjusted" to fit the type of ceiling fan I was using. Once installed it was discovered that the fan's blade motor would not work. The second ceiling fan had to be taken down, reboxed, and returned for a replacement fan. Both fans work great now. The exhaust fan was easily installed with no problems once additional hardware was obtained. The electricians were very professional and answered all my questions and even made a trip to Home Depot to pick up the additional hardware when I told them I did not have access to a car that day. They were so helpful, tidy and did a great job. I would highly recommend them.
Description of Work: I needed two ceilings fans and an bathroom exhaust fan installed. All three jobs included cutting holes into the ceilings and both ceiling fans needed wiring done.

Last year we called Kolb to replace the old attic fan. The guy came and told us that he needs at least 2 people to do the job. On June 22, 2010, they did come and installed the fan which cost us over $700. However, it didn't last long. So this year we called them back, the electrician found out the motor was bad (even it should be new). So he changed a new motor but still charged us for the work which is $171.50. Now we just hope it can last longer than few months. But for sure, we will never use Kolb again.

Response from Kolb Electric Inc
This customer was charged our standard rate for the attic fan installation. They were not charged for an extra person which was probably required due to the pitch or height on the roof. On the most recent call, the motor was bad on the fan. We replaced the motor on the fan and only charged the customer the labor to replace it. While the fan might have been under warranty by the manufacturer, we chose to not make the customer go through that process and provided the motor free of charge. The manufacturer's warranty would not have covered the labor either way. We believe that the charges were fair and reasonable and we are sorry that the customer is dissatisfied.

It went really well. We were just disappointed that it took 9 holes in our ceiling to stretch the line to the microwave. We had been told 4 or so. I guess we got the "or so". The guy was great (Pat). He did his best to clean up, but really could have done more to bring it back to where it was when he arrived. NO complaints about Pat. Just think that he didn't have the tools to do a thorough clean up. I would recommend them again.

I had told the rep over the phone that my budget was $250.00. He said that that would not be a problem. I informed the person on the phone when making the appt. that I had purchased the fixture from a friend. The person that came to do the installation informed me that there were a few things that I needed and did not have. One of which required that he leave and pick something up, another required that I leave the house and get something. All of which added to the cost. The installer left two red plastic caps on the ends of some wires on the fixture which are plainly visible. This is a crystal chandelier in a prominent place, and there are two red plastic caps visible! When I asked whether there wasn't anything else he could do,he said he could put electrical tape over the wires. I decided to just cut my losses . Aside from going over my budget considerably, I am disappointed that more questions weren't asked initially so the trips could have possibly been avoided. I didn't know enough about the process to ask them myself, but counted on the professionals to NOT assume that a fixture purchased from a home would be as complete as one purchased from a retail outlet. And, to add insult to injury, to leave the red caps?! I mean, at this point I paid a premium price for what looks like a Mickey Mouse job. I would not have minded even paying for a short look-see visit . In other words, had someone come out and taken a look at the job before installation, and make a determination as to what would be needed, it probably would have make the actual installation a lot smoother. Very, very disappointed.

Kolb was able to quickly send an estimator to price out the job. However, the estimator that Kolb sent was somewhat off-putting. We thought maybe he had taken drugs and that was why he was rather strange. We received the estimate as promised. We called to talk to him about the bid. He wasn't in, so we explained that we had a short window of opportunity to get the work done and asked that they please have him call us back as soon as he could. However, no one called us back, so we went with a different company.

Owner provided outlet and Romex cable. Work was performed well and met owner's expectations. Electrician was pleasant, organized, did his job as expected and cleaned up. Owner will repair drywall at later date.
Description of Work: Installed new exterior ground fault GFI outlet and circuit from house panel to window well. The electrician removed a portion of drywall (8"x12") from the ceiling above the basement window per location specified by homeowner. He then drilled a hole (approx. 1/2") in the band board to provide access to the future outlet location. After connecting the Romex to the new outlet, the hole was sealed with caulk to prevent air leakage and rodents a way inside.
