About us

Our company is family owned & operated. This statement can mean several things to different people. Let us tell you what that statement means to us. It went great.I found James A Wheat & Sons on Angie's List. I called and needed them to come out and work on our gas fireplace as there was a problem with the pilot staying on. We have only been in the home for 18 months and were not used to dealing with the gas fireplace. Tim came out and was fabulous. He told me about the diagnostic fee which was fine and determined that the problem was with the pilot mechanism. He had one and replaced it. He took a look at the entire unit and told me that it all looked fine. I was happy that I was able also to purchase a carbon monoxide alarm for the room directly from him. (I did pay for the convenience factor, but was happy to, knowing that my husband would want to use the fireplace when he got home.) He even offered to mount the alarm, which I thought was above and beyond the call of duty but did not have him do it as my husband would want to have a say in placement of the alarm in the family room. Tim was VERY knowledgeable, and VERY helpful and seemed like a really nice guy! He taught me about turning the pilot light on and off, when needed. He put a drop cloth down and cleaned up after himself neatly. I asked about their other services (full plumbing) as I would definitely call Wheat & Sons again if I need them in the future.
Description of Work: Replaced a gas fireplace pilot mechanism, diagnosed the functioning of the fireplace, sold a carbon monoxide alarm.

James A. Wheat was able to schedule a visit at a time which was convenient (5-hour window; calling 30 minutes before arrival) and carried out the work in quick order, using a motorized snake. When I alerted them via email to a minor issue after the work was completed, I received a call back within 30 minutes and a follow-up call from the manager the next day who offered a solution to the problem. (I listed "n/a" for price above because, due to the urgent nature of the repair, I did not seek price comparisons for the work.)
Description of Work: I contacted James A. Wheat when I needed a bathtub drain snaked urgently, after contacting a smaller company that was unavailable in the required timeframe. (I had tried unsuccessfully to snake out the drain myself, and water was backing up into the tub.)

They were excellent. I research very carefully before choosing people and it has worked out so far. I pay $17 a month for the maintenance contract. It was very easy to schedule with them, they confirmed the appointment by email, and they were late to the appointment but they provided updates so it didn?t impact my schedule too much. The service provider, Jason, was excellent and explained everything in great detail. He spent two and a half hours doing the check because he wanted to make sure I knew everything about the system. He quoted a price for replacing the system which I am considering. The service technician was extremely knowledgeable. I am considering using the plumbing division as well.
Description of Work: I signed up for a yearly contract with James A Wheat & Sons. They came out in November to check the system before the winter.

Wheat & Sons service is excellent. They are punctual, respectful, personable and outstanding technically. They are here when they say they are going to be and they generally solve the problem on the first visit. We highly recommend them.
Description of Work: Yesterday, the technicians were here to perform a diagnostic test on our gas fireplace. However, they have maintained our heating/AC and plumbing though an Eagle Agreement for 20 years (10 years for us and 10 years for the previous owners). They installed our 3 AC units during a renovation 20 years ago and have since replaced them at the end of their useful life. My bill yesterday was $100 but we have made a considerable investment over the years.

The office representative worked with me to establish the earliest appointment possible given my schedule. She even attempted to contact me when a cancelation occurred that might have enabled my appointment to be moved up. I received a confirming phone call to let me know when the technician was on his way. He arrived promptly. He took steps to ensure that the equipment he was using did not create a mess in our laundry area. He cleared the drain thoroughly and then performed repeated tests to ensure that the blockage was removed.
Description of Work: I have been a Wheat & Sons customer for years. In addition to performing regular maintenance checks on the heating, air conditioning, and plumbing systems in my house, they are quite responsive if a problem arises. Most recently I had a clogged basement drain cleared. I have been in my current home for over 30 years. As such I have had to repair, replace, or upgrade all of the major components of my heating, air conditioning, and plumbing systems. I have always found the Wheat & Sons technicians to be professional, knowledgeable, and willing and able to clearly explain options in detail. I have never felt pressured to select a particular option. Instead, I have felt that the technicians were working with me to meet my concern or need at the most reasonable cost.

The pilot light on our gas fireplace went out and I was unable to relight it. Wheat and Sons had done HVAC work for us, and we had been extremely satisfied with their service; so I contact them about the gas fireplace repair. The receptionist informed me that, due to the holidays, the first opening they had for a fireplace service call was early January. I had no problem with that, and we scheduled a morning appointment. Wheat and Sons is very sensitive to the variable nature of the length of service calls and has a system for maintaining communication with the customer regarding that. The day of the appointment, the office called to tell me that the very first call of the day was going to take longer than expected, and that the technician wouldn't be able to get to us until the afternoon. They were sensitive to the fact that I had requested a morning appointment, and were going to do everything they could to accommodate my schedule. I informed them that the afternoon of that same day would be fine, and they assured me that they would continue to be in contact with info on the schedule. They were true to their word. The office called to let me know when the technician had left the immediately-prior appointment, and the technician arrived right on schedule. At the time of my initial call, the Wheat representative and I had discussed the purchase of their "Eagle Agreement," which is a excellent service contract that they offer. (We have one for our HVAC system, and it has really paid off.) I was quoted a price of $202.50 for a 2-year agreement, and I accepted that price. Since the fireplace was not operating properly, I was sure that I would have to pay an additional amount for parts and/or labor to repair or replace the pilot light, and those costs would have been outside the price of the contract. But when the technician arrived and looked at the set-up, he immediately identified the problem as incorrect log arrangement; the installer had not allowed for proper air flow through the logs. After properly arranging the logs (and educating us about gas fireplace operation along the way), he was able to relight the pilot. He was also able to correct a problem with the remote control device, which hadn't worked for over a year. Because we had purchased the Eagle Agreement and he hadn't actually had to perform any repair or replacement, there was no additional cost. I simply paid the $202.50 for the service agreement. In all of our dealings with Wheat and Sons, we have found them to be very responsive and very professional. The technicians are very knowledgeable and very professional. The extra efforts they make to establish and maintain communication with the customer regarding service call appointment times is especially helpful. They are an excellent service provider, and I highly recommend them.

The serviceman was very professional and honest. A drain in one bathtub was not working, and instead of encouraging me to spend a lot of money to replace the problem offered some advice on how to fix the problem without spending a lot of money. Because of their honest I will definatley use them again and I highly recommend them for any plumbing needs.

The repair was completed. The representative was helpful and prompt. They were very persistent in resolving the issue which pleased me. This was an involved job and in my lay opinion was performed well. Upon completion everything was left clean. The techs clothing was clean at the start of the job and protective shoe covers were worn. I now am using the company for yearly servicing.

Technician was on time, donned "booties" to keep my house clean, performed repair, informed me of some other concerns, and made appt. to return for additional repairs. This company is impressive, from their phone receptionist to their service techs. When scheduling an appointment, they gave me a narrow window (30 min) of when they expected to arrive, then called when the service tech was about 10 min. away. The furnace tech was knowledgeable and helpful, giving me some money saving tips and recommendations for a CO monitor. Will continue using.
Description of Work: Furnace went out. The technician found two problems: a faulty ignition switch and faulty pressure valve. He replaced the ignition switch and made a temporary fix to the pressure valve (he will be back to replace in about a week).

The team got there on time and came in and put down plastic so they wouldn't track in my unit and then proceeded to take out the old Heat Pump and Air Handler and then brought up the new ones and hooked everything up. They were wonderful and stayed until they could find out the problem they were having with the Heat Pump making a funny noise when it turned on and they found it. The manger was out twice checking in on everything. Excellent job.

Estimator did not listen to what we were saying. There were inaccuracies on the proposal. He gave us an estimate for heating and air conditioning when we only asked for air conditioning. He didn't give us a proposal in the time he say he would. It took several phone calls and emails to get him to respond. He send an email with a proposal in a chart form that was difficult to understand. He was difficult to reach.

The estimate was so exorbitantly out of line that it was terribly funny. The guy who came actually said that he agreed with me. He said that he did plumbing on the side for them and he would never pay those prices. Nobody else was charging those kinds of prices. He gave me a couple of names of people that I could call. I ended up paying $99 for the service. They did come out on time and the guy was professional.

Response from James A Wheat & Sons Inc
We provided an estimate to snake a main drain from inside the home to the street. The drain line was over 60' long and would be snaked at a minimum of two times. We use a large two man machine to clear main drains to prevent any return issues. We also gave the additional price to televise the drain if necessary to determine if there is a problem causing a history of back ups. Drains should not back up, so if there is a history, televising is a good recommendation but not required. There is no way someone performed a two man large main drain clearing for $99 that is in any way near comparable to what we provided prices for. Any time any customer has a problem with James A. Wheat & Sons, - the Owner's cell phone number is 301.343.0918 and his email is michael@wheatandsons.com

Wheat had to find the pump, as it was not a stock item--in fact the exact pump was long out of manufacturer but luckily the manufacturer still existed and had a replacement pump. Once located, they got it shipped and installed. The installer was excellent. The only quibble that I have is that since the pump was not a stock item, they overpaid for it, which then meant that I overpaid for it. Internet quotes for the pump were my benchmark. Understanding that I needed it quickly and that there were shipping and handling charges added in, it is a small detail, and I don't know if trying to get the boiler pump elsewhere would have been worth the delayed installation (it was cold). I will definitely use them again,.
Description of Work: Installed boiler pump on 30 yr. old system. Found appropriate pump and installed.

We have a service contract with James Wheat and called them out to fix our outdoor unit. We called at 8am on a Friday morning and were given an appointment for Saturday. The problem was diagnosed as a bad compressor and we were quoted $1000 to replace. (This price reflected our service contract discount.) All well and good. They confirmed the part was available from Trane. However we were not able to get on the schedule until Wednesday. The guy came as promised Wednesday morning but it started to rain so he was not able to start the job. He offered to sit there and wait in case the rain stopped. This seemed unnecessary and we would have felt bad for the guy to sit in his truck all morning. Little did we know. He left and by the time it stopped raining around noon, no other tech was available. We thought we would be put back on the schedule first thing but we could not get another slot until (possibly) Saturday. They get an F because having not been able to do the job Wednesday we feel we should have been given priority scheduling. We called another company and they came out next day and fixed it. If a James Wheat guy ever offers to sit in your driveway, say yes!

James A. Wheat plumbing is prompt and completed the service as requested. Bathroom sink had become clogged with hair. Hair clog was below trap and near the connection with main sewer line. Seek another company. Wheat & Sons is overpriced and their work is not consistent.
Description of Work: This company has changed significantly (for the worse) since Mr. Wheat passed the company on to his two sons. The company's fees are extremely overpriced for the market. The quality of the work is dependent on the technician sent to do your job. Some techs are excellent. Others provide poor work that requires rework...most times at additional expense to the customer. We were customers from 1990 and noticed a big change around 1996 when the company started transitioning from the father to sons. We left the company in 2002 after a major deficiency on the company's part.

Response from James A Wheat & Sons Inc
This member had been a long time customer. She has not used our company in over 5-years. I see that she last used our company to replace her direct vent gas water heater. This is not a standard water heater (special type) and was replaced for $1800. Our prices include a 6-year parts, tank and labor warranty. Yes, 6-year labor on any problems with the water heater. While we are not going to be the cheapest company in town, that price, including the extended warranty coverage is more than fair. During the period 2000- 2005 we serviced the member's plumbing, heating and air conditioning systems. Including three visits per year for maintenance inspections, we made 36 visits to the home during that period. Of those 36 trips, 3 were call backs. 1. c/b - newly installed water heater temperature setting too low - factory setting was not high enough for Owner so we adjusted and warned of scalding hot water 2. the other two call backs were on a leaking kitchen sink that was addressed at no charge to the Owner I am sorry that we were not able to satisfy this member's needs. I wish her much luck finding a Contractor. However, I feel that looking over her history and the charges that she paid over the years, her rating of our company is out of line.

I had a clogged main drain which backed up right before Thanksgiving. Wheat & Sons were able to send someone out the next morning for an estimate. The estimate was for snaking the drain with a large snake, twice, but they would have to remove the basement toilet in the process. The estimate was for $1300. It is quite possible that this would have resulted in fewer problems in the future, but I was in the market for a quicker, less expensive fix, so I paid $35 (for the call-out as prearranged in case no work was ordered). I was happy with the explanation, and I knew about the fee ahead of time. They gave me no problems/argument/hard sell. They would have given me the senior discount if my father would have paid, although he doesn't live there permanently. I found someone to do a (probably) less thorough job for much less money ($300).
