I had Michael Carey of James Wheat come out and give me an estimate on a new heat pump and gas furnace and let me say, the guy is outstanding! He?s prompt, not pushy, takes the time to get the measurements he needs, and gives you a good estimate on his work. Mike came out to my house twice between Christmas and New Years for an estimate on a heat pump and then a gas furnace. He was easy to reach on the phone and answered emails when he wasn?t on the clock. On his initial visit, he did a manual J load calculation (which not a lot of companies like to do), checked the breaker box, took notes on what lines and such were present in the basement, and listened to what my needs were for a system. He made good usage of his tablet, got the load calculation done and presented me with 10 different options. After Mike left, I figured out the gas company could run a gas line up to my house in 2 weeks and I had Mike come out again. He did another great job taking measurements and problem solving with me on ways to get lines run through the house, and then gave me another 10 options! In taking bids, I chose only companies recommended by friends and /or were A rated by Angie?s list and the consumer checkbook (6 in total). Mike did the best job professionally (in person, over the phone, via email), did things by the book, and did his best to get me a system that would work for me. I did not go with him because I went with a lennox (has significant rebate now) and not carrier, but he did offer the best service. I recommend him for anybody looking for a great heating and air conditioning servicemen.

Appointment was made for the day after I called, and I was given a 30 minute window for when the technician would arrive. Tech called a few minutes before the window, and arrived shortly thereafter. Tech put on shoe covers while in the house. Technician was professional and knowledgeable. He explained the problems in detail, and provided numerous maintenance tips to help prevent future problems. I was disappointed in the parts prices. I was charged $163 for an igniter that I priced online at $20 to $44. I was charged $262 for a pressure switch that I priced online at $90 to $118. There were no separate labor charges, so I assume labor is included in the part prices. However, the time needed to install these parts and test their operation does not justify the exorbitant markup. On the plus side, the total price was reduced by 10% as a senior citizen discount.

My recommendation is that you check their website before purchasing a "Big Deal".
Description of Work: I saw the plumbing offer advertised by James A. Wheat on Angie's List. There was no indication on the "Big Deal" that the service area was restricted. I purchased the deal and phoned the company to schedule a date for service. It was then that I learned the company does not service Loudoun County. In retrospect, I should have looked on their website; it clearly says what their service area is. Although there is a N/A button to click on for overall experience with the company, the system would not let me. The "C" rating does not reflect their service since I never received any service.

The plumber was on time and very courteous. He explained what he was doing and warned me in advance that flushing a water heater often caused a part to break (which it did).

The call to schedule the visit was effortless. They worked with my schedule. The technician arrived on time and began by asking if I had any concerns in particular. The technician welcomed me hovering over his shoulder. It gave him the opportunity to explain what he was checking and why. There were no major issues. He tightened pipe connections as he encountered them. The technician was regarding of my home. He had just the right mix of professionalism and interpersonal skills. When asked questions regarding his qualifications the technician seemed more than happy to share same.

We've been using James A Wheat for our heating/AC for years. The technician always gives us cost-saving advice (which filters are best for our son's allergies, where to buy them, etc.). This past week they came to do an annual inspection. We asked them to install a new thermostat (Nest 2nd generation). The technician did the installation at no extra charge. My only complaint with this last visit was their punctuality. The appt. was originally for 1 PM. After several back-and-forth phone calls having to do with other clients' emergencies, the tech. finally arrived at 6 PM. I suppose the other clients were happy to have their emergencies serviced quickly.

The company and workmen are very professional and accommodating. I was kept informed by email and phone on every step of the process. And excellent experience!
Description of Work: This was a "Big Deal" for a whole house plumbing inspections and water heater flush. The workman (Justin) inspected all facuets, toilets and pipes. He did not complete the water heater flush because my HW heater was too old and may be more of a problem to attempt to flush due to age. He checked the water pressure from the main water supply. I indicated that I plan to replace the water heater in the near furture but unfortunately on 6 Sep 12 the heater stopped working and I had this company replace the water heater. As a result of the Big Deal, I got a discount on the new installation.

We purchased this Big Deal around a year ago, and while I thought I submitted a review, it apparently didn't save. Our town has a serious problem with white calcification in the water, and the deposits show up wherever the water is hot. As such, we try to flush the water heater at least once a year, and this time there was a Big Deal for it. The water heater flush went well, and the plumber gave us some tips on how to avoid future floods by replacing our washer lines with braided ones, and doing some other things. VERY valuable info. Unfortunately, the inspection missed a kink in a copper pipe that was right above the water heater, and a week later it sprung a leak, leading to a partially flooded basement. The kink was in plain view, and I really wish the plumber would have seen it and pointed it out.

James A Wheat and Sons was very professional. Originally I called for them to snake outside drains, but the technician was not able to do to age of pipes and something faulty with some of the pipes. He didn't try to charge me extra for work he couldn't do, was honest about it. Their estimator Arlene then came out to give me a free estimate to see what would be the best solution to my problem. We talked through different options and came up with something that worked best for me regarding cost and the drainage issues I was having. The plumbers who came out to do the work were very pleasant and trustworthy. I am very pleased with their work and am certain I can rest more easily now without having to worry about the heavy rainfalls we've been having. I will definitely use them again for my plumbing needs!

I found this company to be terrific. They were responsive when I called. I explained that I had a complex problem that had stumped a number of other plumbers, and that I needed someone really good. The guy they sent was great. He helped me figure out the source of a gas leak, then he performed tricky work on old pipe with a minimum of damage to existing fixtures. Of course the price seemed high, but it's always high with plumbers -- and it was substantially less than another leading company charged me for much simpler work that didn't fix my problem.
Description of Work: A senior technician assisted me in locating the source of a gas smell in my house -- it turned out to be an old, leaky fireplace in a neighbor's house. The technician then removed a section of pipe leading to the fireplace and replaced it with a shutoff valve.

I will say that both my husband and I do not know a thing about AC units. We are not the least bit handy. We had another company give us an estimate, and I would ask for a lot of information to help me understand exactly what the job entailed since AC lingo was practically gibberish to me. The first company really didn't want to go into much detail to try and help me better understand, they mostly looked at me like I had 10 heads. But when James A. Wheat and Sons came out for the estimate they were super helpful. Explained what brands were best and gave me a easy to read chart that listed 10 different options I could go with, what each included and the cost. It was super easy to understand exactly what I was signing up for. Once we decided how to move forward, they were extremely thorough, checking and double-checking everything to make sure it was installed correctly. They even pointed out some pipe options and other things for me to decide on before they moved forward, which were little details that most other companies might have just made a decision on their own, but I appreciated being asked. Overall we had a great experience with them. With all the power outages we've had in our area, I've already contacted them again to install our generator... so I'm definitely planning to use them again!
Description of Work: Our AC had a broken motor. We just moved in to our house and were unaware the AC unit was almost 30 years old - double what it's life span should be. We opted to replace the entire AC unit instead of just replacing the motor, with the assumption it was eventually going to have other issues OR once they fixed the motor it still might not work (since the unit was so old it might not work well with the new pieces).

Mr. Whistler did the inspection and told me what he had found. He was courteous and helpful in explaining everything and suggesting what was the highest priority to be done. I felt very comfortable and understood his explanations. I decided to have him do all the work that was needed. He started on it right away in order to finish it all that day. He did call in another worker to help him with resetting the toilet seat. They both worked steadily and efficiently, and cleaned up neatly after themselves. It's a joy to have all that plumbing taken care of so that I don't have to think about it again for a long time. I was so impressed by the professionalism and skill of the plumbers that I mentioned the company to friends and gave one friend the name and phone number.
Description of Work: The kitchen faucet had been dripping for ages and it was years since I had called a plumber, so when I saw the Angie's List deal of a plumbing check and water heater flush, I bought it immediately. Tim Whistler came to do the work and he was very courteous and helpful in explaining everything. The inspection included dye testing of toilets, checking of safety shut off valves, operation of plumbing fixtures and drainage of fixtures, carbon monoxide level and operation of gas water heater and more. In addition, I asked him to replace the kitchen sink faucet and a bathroom sink faucet with faucets I had purchased already, and to check the copper pipes for signs of leaking (greenish deposits) because I have had problems with pinhole leaks in the copper pipes before. Mr. Whistler drained the water heater, installed the faucets, and performed the inspections. He then explained his list of things that needed repair and I had them all done, including installing new 3/4" 25AUB PRV at main line to cut back very high incoming water pressure - set PRV to 70 psi; installing ST-5 expansion tank on HWH to conform to code with PRV install, setting exp. tank to 70psi also,; installing new 3/4" ball valve main shut off just below PRV; replacing 10-12 feet of 1/2" copper pipe in basement and 2 feet of 3/4" in area above furnace that all had pinhole leaks; replacing kitchen faucet with faucet I purchased, with sinkhole cover; replacing faucet in hall bathroom with one I had purchased; putting in 1 3/8 threaded by 3/8 comp angle stop/escutcheon on cold side to replace bad shutoff valve; removing and resetting toilet that had bad wax ring and was leaking and caulked the base; in another bathroom snaking the lavatory drain, putting in 2 3/8 x 3/8 angle stops and installing new PVC trap; installing new tailpiece in another sink and 1 new supply line at cold side to replace plastic line. In addition, I purchased a Plumbing Eagle Agreement for one annual inspection of the plumbing system, including testing and checking condition of water heater, main shut off valve, all safety shut off valves, all gas safety shut off valves, all faucets, drainage, and overall condition of the plumbing system, and including 15% off all repairs, including this one.

OK, I guess. Above I put I would use them again but that's because they replaced equipment & they now have to maintain it. My inside unit was from 2001(which this company put in has maintained since then) & the outside unit was from 1996 (another company installed it). After July's 6 day power outage my house was warmer then usual. I called James Wheat & Sons to come out for its yearly check up & outside unit was pretty much dead (when power finally came back on unit ran for 24 to 48 hrs continuously & most likely burned itself out). I had to take off work & wait around for someone to show up since I did not have a "Service Contract" w/them. Office told me someone would be at my house at 1PM, they did not show up until after 3PM & 2 calls to the office. Chris, JW&S employee, did yearly check up & gave me the bad news them he gave me options. Since I had been using them since 2001, I chose to stay w/them & replace everything. I set up appt (had to take off work again) for JW &S employee (Sean Davis) to come out & measure inside space for new unit that was ordered by Chris. Then 2 days later company came out to install both units, after about 3-4 hours one employee (Ernesto) informs me that the metal duct work is not correct. Sean D measured for Unit A & they had Unit B, apparently Unit A was no longer available. So they went home early while shop made new duct work. Company blamed manufacture for not having updated info on units. They came back the next day to complete installation. Two good comments, I ended up having emergency eye surgery the week after installation, 1) Susan (JW&S office worker) worked around my schedule for final company & county inspection. 2) County inspector said county had "suggested" guidelines for companies and JW&S had met those & more. He was very pleased w/the worked they had done.

As I said Tim was on time, profressional, smart, technically proficient, and polite. He clearly described the problem and the solution, and then solved the problem. Overall, I was very pleased and would use Wheat & Sons again -- in fact I am committed to Wheat & Sons for a year given our agreement! And I am quite comfortable with that.
Description of Work: One of our toilets was leaking and my neighbor recommended Wheat & Sons -- a recommendation confirmed by its high rating on Angie's List. Tim came on time, put booties on (love it!) and diagnosed the problem. He really knew what he was doing -- he fixed the leak and then we noticed that the flapper was an additional problem. He fixed that as well although he told me to watch it since the problem might actually be in the flush valve which is expensive. At that point he advised that it would be best to just replace the toilet if it continues to leak in the tank. But right now, it seems okay. He gave me price quotes on toilets for reference and just in case. He then examined our other two toilets to make sure that they were functioning well and that they were not leaking. I bought a one year agreement that would give us a 15% discount on any parts and labor. I thought it wise in my case since I might not only have two other leaking toilets, but we might need a whole new toilet at some point over the year. Who knows......

I first called the company for two issues - AC and plumbing. The person I spoke to was very professional on the phone (although he initially disconnected me). I described both issues. He told me there was a $35 service charge, that he could get a plumber out there by the next day, but that he needed to check to see how soon he could get someone out for the AC. He promised to call me back in 15-20 minutes. Over an hour later with no return call, I called back. After a lot of clammering, he said he could "probably" get someone to come out that day for the AC (he would try to divert someone to come out immediately before he left for a job in Germantown) and that it would cost $125; when I asked about the $35 he said that was only for the plumbing. I initially agreed, but then called around and found someone else who could come out that day for sure for only $89, so I called back and canceled the AC. However, I specifically said I wanted to keep the plumbing appointment. (I was told by the person who answered - a different guy - that the AC job had not even been entered into the system yet.) The next day, I had to call back at 12 because I had still not been given a time for the plumber. The person I spoke to knew who I was but it seemed like the appointment had not yet been scheduled. Nevertheless, he indicated he could get someone there aftre 2:00 and promised to call around then to let me know more specifically. True to his word, at 2:02, he called and said the tech would be there within the hour, and he was. When the plumber came in, he looked at my sink and told me that their normal installation fee for a 4" faucet was $499, but that it would be more for an 8" faucet, which is apparently very difficult to install. I told him that was way outside of my budget, and that had I known their basic fee was so high, I would not have wasted his time (or my $35). He still priced it out and eventually quoted me $626 (BTW, I was supplying the new faucet), but he offered to call his office to see if they could work with me. However, he indicated that they would not likely knock off more than $100, so I told him not to bother. He then went out to "write everything up." While he was gone, I called around and found someone else willing to do the work for less than 1/2 the price he quoted ($225). When he came back, he told me he had called his office and they were willing to let him do it for $483. I thanked him but turned him down. The bottom line is that they were very pleasant, but WAY overpriced and not that responsive. Also, I couldn't shake the feeling that I was being gouged. Although I didn't ask about the cost ahead of time, there was a lot they could have done to prep me for the sticker shock. For example, they could have told me what their "basic" price was (which was way over market), and they could have asked me if my sink was a 4" or 8", which I didn't know made a difference but they obviously did. I felt like they deliberately kept me in the dark so they could eke out a service fee for the 5 minutes spent and the chance to sell me on a hugely overpriced service. I would not call them again.
Description of Work: Replace bathroom faucet - 8 inch.
