The service quality was excellent. It was evident that the technician was skilled and he performed a very thorough inspection before and after the repair work. The report provided showed the improved A/C system performance. I would highly recommend James A. Wheat & Sons. The only negative was the cost of the repair service, which was fairly high.

Doug from James A Wheat very thoroughly inspected the indoor and outdoor components of my a/c system according to a lengthy checklist with a host of gauges that he brought with him. He also cleaned the reusable filter. He patiently and thoroughly answered all of the questions that I asked him while he worked. Afterwards, the company sent me an 8 page report containing the performance specs of my system compared to ideal baseline specs that supported Doug's conclusion that my system was operating properly. I felt like I received good value from the Angie's List coupon that I purchased for this service. I recommend James A Wheat and Doug Van Deusen.

The technician arrived right on time and was very professional and thorough. He inspected, cleaned the fireplace, and helped fix a minor problem with the pilot switch. I will definitely recommend this company to others and keep them in mind for myself for any other plumbing, AC, or fireplace issues I have in the future.

It was a horrible experience. They replaced the sump pump right before hurricane sandy hit. The pump failed and I called them during the storm to have them come out and fix it. They did show up and i appreciate that because it was treacherous conditions. They admitted to not replacing a valve so, he went out during the storm to get the part. They had to come back a total of 3 times to complete the work. They were nice but, they should have done it right the first time.

Response from James A Wheat & Sons Inc
Sump pump systems have a check valve that is part of the piping system, not included in a sump pump and does not come with the purchase of a new sump pump. We are generally not in the habit of replacing (selling) parts that do not need to be replaced unless we see some reason or condition that would suggest a part needs or should be replaced. As mentioned, the check valve is not part of the new sump pump and there was no indication that the check valve was defective. When the existing check valve failed, not our new sump pump; we came immediately and replaced the check valve. I would agree that we should have given you the option to replace the check valve on the initial visit. But the failure of an existing check valve is not the fault of our mechanic or equipment. I am glad we were able to respond so quickly to avoid damage to the property from the failure of the existing check valve. Michael Wheat

it went well. I felt like I could trust the guy. He didn't seem like he was trying to sell me a bill of goods. I felt he was honest and trustworthy. I also had another one from James Wheat come to check my plumbing and he was very honest. He unclogged my pipes instead of charging me $280.00 for a snake job

My wife and I drove up from Atlanta to spend some time with my wife's 86 year old mother. We arrived to 90+ degree weather and no A/C. Checked Angie's list for a good local A/C company. James A Wheat & Sons Inc was the only company that would come out and check the system immediately. First visit - mostly measuring and selling. Existing unit was completely void of refrigerant. Over $300 to refill and no guarantee that it would work. So, we sat down, went over a number of alternatives, talked about rebates and energy credits, got over the sticker shock, and signed contract. Paid half down. Nice touch, he filled the unit with refrigerant without charging us additional fee. A/C completely died two days later. To Home Depot for many fans. Second visit - Unfortunately, no one could come out until 2 weeks later. Monday morning a rep was there to make sure on measurements and materials. Everything looked good. I was impressed with the professionalism, attention to detail, and level of communication. He noted that the A/C unit we originally wanted was too large to fit through the access hatch and asked to substitute another unit. Not as big, not as energy efficient, not as large an energy credit. Third visit - Two days later (2 weeks without A/C - remember my mother-in-law is 85), the guy from Monday is back nice and early (as promised) 7:30am. But, the other guy with the equipment is stuck in traffic and won't show up until after 9:00. Now the fun starts. The A/C unit is located in the attic of our 100 year-old house. Ceilings are 10 ft high. And the smaller A/C unit doesn't fit through the access hatch. Two people measured. They take the trim off (which we had planned on) Still doesn't fit. They make a call and a third guy shows up. They ask about enlarging the opening. But they aren't responsible for fixing the hatch and trim. Ok, no problem (I thought), I can fix it. Now, I wonder if the first unit would have fit through the new, larger opening. Three men try for an hour (probably more) to hoist the new A/C unit through the access panel. They were completely unprepared to do this even though one of them is the guy from Monday. No straps, no hoist, nothing to help get the unit through the 26"x30" hole. Finally they were able to man-handle the unit into place. They finished the job around 9:00, cleaning up the yard after dark. Clean up was good, everything was removed from the site, did a quick sweep. But laster dust everywhere from enlarging the access hole. Which brings me to the "easy" job of replacing the trim and hatch. Not that easy. Trim now doesn't cover the hole anymore. If I cut new trim, the hatch won't fit. So I need to cut new trim and build a new hatch. But, remember I'm here visiting my 85 year old mother-in-law. I have no tools or materials and not much time. So, I'm covering the hole temporarily and I'll be back (or I'll find someone on Angie's list to build me a new access hatch). James A Wheat & Sons Inc responded quickly to my phone call. The guys that did the install worked exceedingly hard (much harder than should have been necessary), were professional, and it looks good. The house is cool. Everything is working as it should. I'm a tough grader (middle school teacher) so, overall I give them a B.

The customer service, timeliness, quality of work and professionalism was amazing. We live in an 1880 row house in the city with an AC on the roof making it complicated for replacement and service. This requires a crane for install and city permits. James A. Wheat took care of everything and any issues we had during the process.

James A Wheat was the only company that I contacted that could scope the pipe on short notice. The process was easy, from scheduling to arrival was painless and the technician was able to do the work in about 45 mins. It didn't seem like $600 worth of work, but I understand that the equipment is VERY expensive and hard to maintain. The technician did tell me that a) I would get a copy of the movie - I didn't - AND a write up of the findings by the manager - I didn't.

I am looking into why the office has not mailed your copy of the video inspection. I will have the office contact you directly. Thank you for the review. Just a quick note, the video inspection was $467 plus the Eagle Agreement purchase of $135. The Eagle Agreement comes with a complete inspection of the home plumbing system including the water heater operation, toilets, shut off valves and more. Plus the Eagle Agreement comes with 15% off all repairs. Thank you again for the review and I will have the office contact you about your copy of the video inspection. Michael Wheat

These people are extremely rude and unprofessional!!!! Appointment was screwed up and guy showed up late of course! When he showed he was there to give me an estimate for a brand new ac unit. I was confused since I told the office i wanted an appointment for an estimate on cleaning my ac unit drain and that the ac unit worked fine!!! When I spoke to manager on phone while estimator was there, she was very rude and would not answer any of my questions. Then told me it would cost over $500 for the work. I purchased a new water heater from them also last fall, when I researched the cost i realized they over charged me $1,200!! I blame myself for not researching enough before I hired them. But at least I can let other people know, do not use these people, their free inspection package they sell you is also a lie!!!

Our records indicate the job was set up for a free estimate to replace an air conditioning system. An appointment confirmation email was sent confirming the date and type of service requested. Upon arrival - the Owner was extremely upset, stating that he wanted his system serviced not replaced. It was almost 1pm on 5/30/2013, it was 90 degrees and we were overbooked, but we rearranged our schedule to send a technician to the home that arrived within an hour or so. The Owner was given options to do complete inspections of the system or just clearing drains. He opted to clean the drain at a cost of $193 and clean the indoor coil at a cost of $120. So we did not charge him over $500 to clear a drain. He paid $313 to clear a drain and acid clean an indoor coil. We did install a water heater for this same Owner. The cost of the water heater and installation was $1302. He also purchased a Eagle Agreement Inspection Service Plan and a water heater flood protection pan. We provided a 6-year labor warranty on the water heater, installed it to local code and hauled the old water heater away. So the statement we over charged him $1200 is ridiculous when the water heater installation itself was $1302. There are some customers that I am not going to be able to make happy and I am not able to prevent them from not telling the truth about the services provided or amounts paid. We provided an email to the customer verifying services requested. No reply or change in services were ever requested until we arrived at the home. The prices indicated above are not accurate. As always, I am always here for any problems, concerns, or questions that may arise. We strive to provide the best services possible. If that does not occur, I am here to make sure that we make a situation "right!". My email is mwheat@wheatandsons.com and my cell phone is 301.343.0918. Michael M. Wheat VP

I think it went exceptionally well. Our furnace died during one of the coldest periods of this winter. Wheat made an extraordinary effort to get us heat asap and they were considerate of our budget. Their office staff was proactive, responsive and helpful. The sales and technical staff were proactive, responsive, professional, clean and helpful as well. There was a minor issue with the inspection; the technician returned, corrected the issue and the installation passed inspection with flying colors.

It was fine. The coupon was worth it. But any future services, based on the estimates I had gotten, probably aren't.
Description of Work: I paid for an inspection. The plumber was very professional and seemed to know what he was doing. He asked me if I had any specific concerns. I told him I was concerned about the low water pressure in my house. He cleaned out the little filters (which I didn't even know existed), and that made the pressure a bit better. He also explained that the pipes used from the hot water heater to my upstairs bathroom might be really small. He said replacing the pipes would be very expensive. I also explained to him that I was having problems with the shower water being either too hot or too cold. He said that the problem was due to a regulator being bad. He showed me the regulator and he tried to get a replacement. But apparently it's a Home Depot Glacier Bay brand, which Home Depot doesn't sell to contractors. He said I could go out and buy it myself and that they could put it in. He emailed me a quote of around $120 to get it installed. If I remember correctly, installing it is a simple matter of unscrewing 2 holes and puttin gthe part in. I realize the guys need to make a living, but $120 for about 10 minutes of work seems excessive. Had he just shown me how to put it in step by step (which would have taken all of 5 minutes), I would have been more likely to use them again. He supposedly flushed my tankless hot water heater. It must have taken literally 2 minutes because I didn't see him do it. He also tried to sell me a burst-free washer hose install, and that would have been another $200. So the 2 services estimated were about $300. Considering that it would have probably taken them 20 minutes and maybe $20 in parts, it seemed excessive.

Called to ask for quote on replacing a garbage disposal that has stopped working. They refused to give me an estimate until I pay a service call for them to come and then they will give a quote. I already know what the problem is, and just needed the garbage disposal replaced. I'm busy, don't have time to accommodate two visits from the plumber for a simple job, just so he could make extra money for an additional visit.

I see that we performed an estimate in 2009 for as our records indicate "to replace electric baseboard". I am not sure if there was a miscommunication in the office but that is what is in our records to provide you an estimate for. The most efficient and recommended option for replacement of electric baseboard is a new heating / air conditioning system. Our policy is to educate our customers on the benefits of several options, not to push you in any direction or for a quick sale. I apologize if we came off that way. Thank you Michael Wheat

Initially things were going well, the plumber was professional, on time, and provided good customer service. He explained all the issues, and gave me options for repair. The process required a return trip by the plumber because of the complexity of the tub faucet. In between the 2 visits, I noticed that water was collecting in the bottom of the bathroom sinks around the drain that had been repaired, and water had not been collecting there before the repair. The plumber explained it was due to the design of the new drain, he tried to fix it, but was unable to. Even though the dripping is now fixed, I have a new problem to deal with. Then the plumber fixed the tub faucet, did a great job on that, but after he left I had poor water pressure throughout the house. I called once again to ask for a return visit, but by this time I was very upset about the amount of money I had spent, with poor results. The weekend scheduler was rude and condescending- I just decided to cancel everything. I got an email from the company saying they wanted to be sure I was satisfied with my service, and if not then "click here" to contact someone to speak to about it. When I tried to "click here" on the email, nothing happened. Hmmm. That added insult to injury. Finally my brother came to my home and corrected everything. I hated to bother him because he is so busy, but he could see that I was so distraught over this whole fiasco.
Description of Work: I had 3 sink faucets that needed to be replaced and 1 roman tub faucet. The tub faucet was complex because there was no access to the faucet when the house was built. All services were performed, with an additional repair that was required near the water shut-off.

(deleted member name) - I know that the job performed at your home did not go as smoothly as either one of us would have preferred. Unfortunately the fixtures that you purchased and the sink designs are creating a small lip that is holding water. This is not a result of improper installation, it is a result of design of two different products not working well together. I apologize that our office staff did not handle your call properly. I will be happy to send Jeff Wheat himself directly to your home to review both the water pressure and see if we can do anything about the existing sinks holding water. I know that we talked personally once before and I thought that I gave you my personal information should you run into any troubles. I assisted you by providing you three locations to find the correct tub faucet. In case you lost it, my personal and direct contact is 301.343.0918 and michael@wheatandsons.com. Thank you. Had a sewer main back up and called these guys in a hurry on Tuesday (they were recommended by my plumber who is a one man shop and does not do this type of work). They came out quickly to give an estimate and as soon as I signed off, Jorge was off to pick up the equipment and another person to complete the job. They returned a little over an hour later and got to work. It probably took them a good 2 hours to go in through the basement toilet and snake through and video the pipe. After showing us the video, we decided to go ahead and get the additional water jetting service to really clean through the pipe. We just recently purchased the house and while I wasn't thrilled with spending the extra money on the service (it wasn't necessary), I figured it was worth getting it fully flushed out so we wouldn't have to think about it again for some time. They left on Tuesday night to return on Wednesday. The bathroom was a bit dirty, but overall, they did a fairly good job of trying to clean up the mess. I received a call on Wednesday morning that they would be at the house after 12, but that I would receive another phone call 30 minutes prior. I never did receive that call. The same two guys came back to the house and finished up the job. Took another 3 hours. Overall, professional and friendly and they left the bathroom much cleaner the 2nd day than the 1st. They were quick and efficient and got the job done. They are not the cheapest (they readily admit that), but overall satisfied with the service.
Description of Work: They came out to service a sewer main back up. They snaked the pipe all the way out to the main WSSC pipe in the street, made a video of the pipe to look for trouble spots and jetted it with high pressure water to thoroughly clean it.

We noticed on a Monday that water was coming up from under the floorboards around the toilet in our downstairs powder room. We first called another plumber who could not come to look at it but referred us to James A. Wheat & Sons whom we called on Tuesday morning. They had a morning cancellation and so sent Tim over right away. When he arrived, Tim did a visual examination of the toilet and could not find the source of the leak and explained that we'd have to lift the toilet up to see for sure where it was coming from. This would immediately incur a $379 charge, however, as then he'd have to reset the toilet with a new wax ring even if the toilet wasn't the source of the water in the floor. That seemed a bit steep to us, so we debated doing it and eventually decided to go for it. We're fortunate that we did. As soon as Tim lifted the toilet up it was apparent that when the previous owners of the house installed the Pergo flooring in the powder room they did not also raise up the flange, as Tim explained they should have. Instead, they just put on two wax rings, which was not very secure, and this likely caused the leaking. Tim brainstormed with his colleagues over the phone the best way to fix the problem and they collectively figured out that they could take out the old flange and pour a new one that would go up higher than the new floor, then reset the toilet and the leak would be fixed. Tim couldn't do it that day as he didn't have the specific tools and materials necessary, so he set the toilet aside and came back on Thurs morning to finish the job. He worked quickly, was always patient as we decided which courses of action to take when there was a decision to make (and explained our options), and even did a quick visual inspection of our other two toilets to make sure that there was nothing obviously wrong with them once he finished with the powder room. He left our house relatively clean and looking better than before with a clean, new line of caulking on the bottom near the floor. Overall a great experience. Tim provided excellent service and, as far as we can tell, did quality work, and the electronic receipts, ability to get somebody on the phone, and responsiveness of the James A. Wheat central office were an added plus. Highly recommended.
Description of Work: Tim Whistler of James A. Wheat & Sons removed and reset an existing toilet that was leaking beneath the floorboards around the toilet. He also replaced an old water shut off valve and the old cast iron flange beneath the toilet.

It was a Big Deal special. They called me in January, we set up an appointment and they came and did the work. They were on time and knew what they were doing.

They did a good job-- no complaints. I wasn't expecting the price to be so high, but they did good work.
Description of Work: I had a well pump (my only source of water) which died of old age. I called them after using them in the past and they installed a new well pump.

Overall we were very satisfied with the service provided by James A. Wheat & Sons. Scheduling the time for the service call was the only real challenge, due to several other customers having drain issues before the technicians could get to our house. Once they arrived they were able to quickly set up and perform their tasks. Clean up afterwards was thorough.
Description of Work: We had a branch drain clog from the laundry area to the main drain line of the home. Mr. Justin Clipper provided exceptional service by quickly identifying the problem and carefully explaining our options. As the home is 64 years old and we had drain issues previously, we requested that they also run a video/TV line of the main sewer line to determine its servicability.

They said they could not do this flush because it would cause problems if they did. I got a refund for it.
Description of Work: This was a Big Deal for a whole house plumbing inspection and water heater flushed.
