The work they completed at each visit was great . The prices are fair and each technician I meet is as friendly and nice as the next! They go above and beyond to make the homeowner happy. Highly recommend calling James A Wheat for your plumbing needs!
Description of Work: I have used James A Wheat several times. They have snaked my toilet, fixed a kitchen faucet, replaced a leaking sewage pipe in my crawl space and replaced a toilet among other things. Each time I use them I am very happy and satisfied with a job well done. The technicians are friendly, courteous and polite. They go above and beyond what needs to be done and always keeps a positive attitude. The Eagle contract is wonderful and gives me piece of mind that I have a plumber there for me in an emergency. I would highly recommend James A Wheat!

The plumber showed up on time, check everything out, understood that i'm mostly a do-it-yourselfer, and only quoted some upgrades that he understood i would not do myself. i appreciate that he didn't quote simple things that I could do myself. On time, very professional as he moved around the house, careful not to disturb other family members.

The plumber who came out was absolutely professional and very, very helpful. He discussed every aspect as we went through the house, and even gave me tips for potentially saving money. The special deal for $75 was a great price, the only reason I graded this provider as a "B" for price was because the quote to put in a toilet was $440 (if I bought the toilet myself - nearly $1000 for a plumber-supplied toilet!), and over $320 to put in a drain ("pop-up") assembly in a sink. I just find these prices a little high, but to be fair, I don't have other estimates to compare them to. This provider offers a one-year maintenance contract ($135), and if you purchase that you do actually get $15 off all other repairs, so in certain cases it can be well worth the price. Overall, I was very pleased with the service I received.
Description of Work: I purchased a special "deal" from Angie's List for a whole-house plumbing inspection and hot water heater flush.

Natural gas hot water heater was 12 years old and finally gave out completely, although not without spewing hot water all over the basement first. Called Wheat and Sons. They sent a team within two hours, and the whole job was done by the end of the day. They were considerate and cleaned up after themselves very well. We were quite happy with the speed of the response. The overall cost was in the $2500 range, which was probably a bit on the high side, but considering the short turnaround time, it was definitely worth it. The only downside came when the Montgomery county inspector came out to check the plumbing and gas work the next week. The job failed initially because the updraft and chimney were too large of a diameter to be within code standards. There was potential for condensation, which leads to cracking which could lead to pooling of the gas and a catastrophic event (however unlikely). Wheat sent a different team back and there was an additional cost to run a chimney liner which was to code and rested inside the existing flue. The extra cost was on the order of $500. The Wheat rep said that their first plumber/gas tech should have caught that, and they were very apologetic, but they still charged us for what seemed the full price of work. Again, quick response, got it fixed, overall safety were all important factors that kept us happy with the company overall. I think that the quality of the work as it was done deserved an A, but couldnt justify that given the initial mistake they made regarding the chimney. It seems like this was a pretty common condition and one that could have been caught sooner.
Description of Work: Replaced a malfunctioning hot water heater. Later had to reline the chimney/natural gas escape to bring it to code.

He was here very punctually within the half hour window he gave me. He did exactly what I had expected and wanted. He gave me great advice and referred me back to Angie's List so I could purchase the coupon again in the future, which saves me money. He was very professional and knowledgable. He was able to schedule the follow up appointment for the exact time I wanted.
Description of Work: I purchased a deal for an A/C inspection, cleaning and tune up. Some parts needed ordering so he will be coming back again in two weeks. I had to pay additional money for the parts but it was the same cost as what I had been quoted from other companies.

The plumber arrived on time and assessed the problem. He returned the next day with an assistant. The leak was particularly difficult to locate and repair as it was in a very inaccessible place tucked adjacent to an outside wall and practically hidden in the ceiling. Nevertheless, both plumbers worked expeditiously, found the pinhole leak, cut out the offending copper line, and replaced it with a new line. Both were very professional and courteous. I would not hesitate to use John Wheat and Sons for any plumbing needs in the future. I was also quite pleasantly surprised by the price of the repair, which I thought would be much higher based on how difficult it was to make the repair.

We had originally requested an afternoon appointment but when our timeframe changed, the James A. Wheat technician was able to adjust his schedule and accommodate our request. He called ahead to confirm his new arrival time and he arrived promptly. In the ten years that I have been a Wheat customer this is exactly the kind of service I has kept me coming back year after year. I highly recommend the "Eagle" Maintenance Agreement because it ensures that small problems are caught before they become major difficulties. This has helped to save a great deal in money. comfort and safety. From checking our gas fireplace, to our air conditioner to heat and hot water I count on the well-trained technicians from James A. Wheat and Sons to "have my back"!
Description of Work: Technician diagnosed problem in first floor bath and replaced temperature cartridge that solved problem that was reason for our call. When I wondered if we might have the same problem he then checked second floor bath and found that it also had the problem I asked him to replace the temperature cartridge. In the course of diagnosing these problems , he checked the hot water heater and flushed it to remove deposits from the base of heater as a preventive measure. I learned a lot in this process especially things that I could do to prevent future problems.

I purchased a big deal from for this company, only to find out that they did not service my area. With that, the provider actually noted the discrepancy before I did and proactively reached out to me within hours to let me know that they would not be able to provide services at my address. First the good. The dispatch was very quick and professional. The serviceman arrived promptly as promised! The "work" was done in less than 5 minutes. Now the not so good. Over the phone I was quoted a $35 travel charge to look at the water heater and assess any repairs that need to be made. After that serviceman was supposed to discuss the repairs with me. Here is where it got weird. There was nothing wrong with the was nothing wrong with the water heater. After the serviceman literally turned it on, I was charged $128. When asked about the nature of a charge I was told that it was, and I quote, AN EXPENSIVE LESSON for me. When I called the manager the next day I was told that they performed diagnostic and that 128 was their rate. When I protested they reduced the charge in 1/2. You can draw your own conclusions. I would recommend them and use again, but I would make sure that anything money related be quoted in advance. Good Luck.

Response from James A Wheat & Sons Inc
Thank you for your review. I am glad that you were satisfied with the majority of our service. I apologize about the confusion that occurred with your billing. We normally do not "turn on" a water heater and leave it. There is generally a reason a water heater pilot has gone out. We feel it is our job to verify proper and safe operation and come to a conclusion as to why the water heater pilot had failed. That takes a good bit more time on the job than turning it on. We normally check: Gas Pressure Millivolt Readings on Safety Shut Off Flame - combustion Carbon Monoxide Levels Oxygen Levels in Flue Gas for Max Efficiency Code sized exhaust pipe Code sized combustion air zone Code expansion tank required Proper draft of exhaust gases Water Temperature for scald protection Relief Valve Safety Check This complete check did not seem to occur. That is the reason that we agreed to drop the price to a price that is more inline with simply turning the water heater on. I apologize that this was not communicated to you. Michael Wheat

I bought the $75 Big Deal coupon because I suspected a leak. My water bill had nearly doubled and I had not dramatically changed my usage. Tim was punctual, thorough, and neat. He always wore plastic booties inside and explained what he was doing step by step. it was very useful to have my water heater flushed as it is old, but I learned that they do not empty the whole 40 gallon tank, but just take a few gallons out, which is supposed to be enough to catch the sediment. Would have had more peace of mind if the entire things were flushed, but maybe a few gallons is sufficient. Tim also found issues with two of my toilets that were slowly leaking, which was probably why my water bill had spiked. The suggested first course of action was to replace the flappers on two of the toilets. The first flapper was $133 and the second $69, and I had $50 off from the coupon. These are pretty steep prices to replace flappers, which is an easy and cheap DIY job. But I was in no mood to mess around with the toilets so I had Time do the work. He then rechecked for leaks and one of the toilets was still leaking. Tim gave me some options, but it's an old toilet and probably should just be replaced. The cost for that was very high; $925, including toilet. All in all, I think this is a good company that is not trying to scam you. I've bought coupons for inspections of A/Cs etc., and the companies clearly just use it as an opportunity to say that you have to do major, costly repairs. Tim did say I had to replace the water heater to the tune of over $2000, but I believe he was on the up and up because the heater is from the 1980s. The price was around $2500, which I cannot comment on because I haven't done any comparison shopping. Lastly, I received an email with a list of recommendations. Their prices were high, but they had a few options to apply discounts. My sense is that they would do good quality work, but the prices at the moment are out of my budget. I also appreciated that at the end of their recommendation write-up, they have a disclaimer saying that their recs do not mean your plumbing will fail if you don't do the work. I really appreciated that. Usually, companies say, you have to replace an entire system ASAP for thousands of dollars or else your whole house will burn down tomorrow. All in all, a good experience; I had a good sense of their work, which is pricey, but they don't push the hard sell on you. Thank you!
Description of Work: Whole house plumbing inspection, flush hot water tank, replace toilet flappers.
