The plumber checked each location in our house and provided a thorough explanation. He even pointed out details about our fixtures that the previous owner didn't mention and that we never would have figured out on our own. We did not have the water heater flush done on the plumber's recommendation because of the age of the valve. The only downside was that he was very late, causing me to miss work. Nonetheless, I would use this company again.

Very good job, just didn't do the flush as advertised and explained why he would not want to do it as it would have caused a major issue. Other work was done to compensate for this work plus the $50 credit.
Description of Work: Checked all operations of flushing and draining of lavatories. Advised that the water heater is not one that he was comfortable with flushing since it's age and the connection is plastic. Fixed some sink stoppers. Checked connections and operation of shut offs.

The needed repairs were discussed and the options for how the repairs could be done to resolve the problem. The costs of the options were also discussed and explained. I felt very confident in making the decision on how to fix the problems and am very pleased with the way the work was done.

Excellent. We feel good about using the fireplace in our new home now. My only complaint is that we had to strong arm them into a date that wasn't far in the future. We bought an Angie's List deal and then they weren't going to be able to see us for another two months, which would have been as the winter was winding down. In their defense, I've learned from other businesses that Angie's List is not always good with timing the special deals.

It went smoothly. Mr. Jorge arrived on time and immediately began to work. He turned the water off at the main valve and drained water from the pipes. A section of the a galvanized pipe in the basement was leaking. It was cut out and replaced with copper. The work was completed in less than a hour. Afterwards, Mr. Jorje turned the water on and made sure the water smoothly flowed through all the pipes throughout the house, i.e. sinks, toilets and showers. Throughout the repair Mr. Jorge answered any plumbing questions that I had.

I initially purchased a $79 annual A/C tune up and inspection Big Deal. When the tech arrived and found some issues, including the need for refrigerant and a new filter, the prices he quoted without a service contract were INSANE. Because the non-contract prices were so inflated, it actually saved me money to get the service contract, if you factor in that they were crediting my Big Deal toward that purchase and I would have a boiler inspection in the fall. But I must say that the quoted prices were astronomical and completely out of line with industry standards. The work was completed just fine, although I opted not to do some extra things that the tech suggested because they were clearly not necessary especially given the age of my compressor (the two things I declined were to add dye to the refrigerant to locate the leak and replace a bad relay switch which, oddly, died while the tech was present). Anyway, a month after my inspection my compressor fan motor died and we had no A/C. As I look back at the report that the tech generated during my inspection, although he never mentioned it to me the dying motor was somewhat predictable in that it was drawing more AMPS than it was rated for. So I called when it died --first thing in the morning -- and was told that a same day appointment would be at an overtime rate and that the next available regular appointment, not at an overtime rate, would be the end of the next day. So much for giving priority to service contract holders. In light of the fact that it was predicated to be 90 degrees, I ended up calling two other HVAC companies on Angie's List. Both were available to come same day. I chose one and they were here and had it fixed before the end of the same day. The bottom line: I would avoid using James Wheat. The prices for non-contract holders are insane and they lure you in to buying a contract by upping their prices and claiming that you will receive priority service as a contract holder. In the end, don't live up to their promise in the contract, so its a waste of money. Just use another company and you will get fast service and more reasonable prices, even without wasting your money on a contract.
Description of Work: A/C annual inspection and tune up, added refrigerant, sold me an annual contract.

Response from James A Wheat & Sons Inc
On 4/23/2014 - we arrived to find the system not working. We checked over the entire system to find the unit with a defective time delay board and low on refrigerant. We removed the defective board and added refrigerant to the system. We reviewed the findings with you but expressed the system was over 12-years old. We would generally not recommend replacing a motor on a 12-year old air conditioner, especially if as a preventive measure. Your system that is at or near the end of its life expectancy is failing. You most likely have a refrigerant leak (why we had to add refrigerant) and we already replaced a board. Even replacing a failed motor is possibly spending several hundred dollars on a system that may need to be replaced in the very near future. We informed you of the condition of your system and that we could not warranty how long the system would last. You called Tuesday May 27th, the day after Memorial Day to schedule service. We were booked until Thursday for service calls. Because you had purchased an Eagle Club Agreement, we offered you two options. 1. Come out the same day - on overtime - This would not have been offered to any non-agreement customer. We were booked and worked until past dark on Tuesday, but offered to come to you. 2. Come out the next day - at regular time - Again we were booked, but we offered to come to your home the very next day. I assume that you feel being put ahead of customers being scheduled for Thursday and Friday was not providing you priority service. I our minds we gave you options for same day service and bumped you ahead of many customers because you had an agreement. You paid $482 for 1. complete inspection of a/c system 2. removal of defective time delay board, wire in bypass 3. Adding refrigerant to system and rechecking 4. A future boiler inspection If this is overpriced, there is not much I can do as I would believe your expectations are not realistic. 90% of the year we are able to provide same day service. We generally are able to adjust our schedule to get to an "no a/c" service call from an agreement customer within one day during hot spells. I simply disagree that the pricing and/or priority scheduling was either out of line or not applicable. Michael Wheat

I initially called on a Thursday saying the utility sink was clogged. I was told there was no available appointment until the following Tuesday afternoon. I made an appointment. That night, however, we realized that the utility sink was filling up with both water from the washing machine and food from the kitchen. We hadn't realized that the kitchen sink was also draining to the same place. This was much more serious because now we could use neither our washer nor our kitchen sink. I called back Friday morning to ask if they might have a cancellation for Friday. I left a voicemail and within two minutes they called back saying they in fact did have a cancellation and someone would arrive within the hour. We were thrilled! The two repairmen (Sandy and Tom) were cheerful, professional, careful, and not a hard sell. They promptly fixed the clogged drain and were cheerful about taking a look at the kitchen faucet (which they had not known about until they arrived). They tried to fix the leak in the faucet with several approaches (to avoid having to get a new faucet), but as it turned out none of them worked. They had a faucet on the truck which was fine (although they were not pushy about selling it to me) and they installed it. It was a fair price for the faucet and installation. They were careful and unrushed even though the service call was probably twice as long as they were expecting (about two hours). These guys were wonderful to work with and we would call them again!
Description of Work: Cut open pipe where both washing machine and kitchen sink drain; this pipe was completely clogged. They snaked out the pipe and put a sleeve on it so that it can be easily reamed out the next time this might happen. This repair was the reason for the service call. However, after they arrived I mentioned that the kitchen faucet has been leaking and wondered if they might be able to take a look and fix that as well.

They are absolutely wonderful to work with. Michael Carey, the technician that came out to do the estimate for me was extermely knowledgable about Air Conditioning. He never tried to talk me into the fanciest, most expensive model, but instead convinced me that a smaller, efficient model would be more than adequate if the duct work was correctly installed. I would definitely recommend them to anyone!

Right away, the technician noticed that the condensation pump had been unplugged and that that was the problem. Since he was here already he went ahead and serviced the unit. He noticed that our unit actually has two filters and that I had always only been changing one filter. I can't even tell you how gross it was! This is something that other technicians from other companies had missed in the past.
Description of Work: After calling other A/C repair companies who never bothered to call me back, I called James A Wheat & Sons after checking Angie's List and they sent someone out the same day, even earlier than the time frame they had given me. Our unit wasn't blowing cold air anymore.

Tim W. did a fantastic job for me today with inspecting and performing maintenance on my two gas fireplaces to get them working again. He arrived on time and was very friendly and professional. The fireplaces weren't getting any gas at first, and he spent extra time figuring out how to turn the valves back on again. He also provided thorough information and estimates of future work to be performed to refurbish the fireplaces. I would definitely use Tim W. and James A Wheat & Sons again in the future.

The inspector arrived on time and looked at the AC. He informed my wife that little was required except a change of the filter and all seemed to be ok. He specifically said that some parts were nearing their end but nothing required immediate attention. When I received the receipt it contained really confusing language, I'll copy/paste it here so you can see what I mean: "on arriver preformed ac check found blowe assmeble need clean run capacitor on blower otor is test at in rate oudoor coil need clean to . system is working" I wrote to ask what that meant because what he wrote seemed to differ from what he told my wife but I really had no idea. I was immediately offered a new visit by a different technician which I wasn't keen on because it takes time out of everyone's schedule to set these up and be present during a 1-2-hour window. Ultimately, all I requested was that someone tell me the exact details of the visit in writing so I had some form of service history. I then received a suggested bill of over $1300 with details of 3 concerns completely new to my wife and I: 1. Found indoor blower wheel dirty and needs cleaning 2. Outdoor coil was dirty and needs an acid clean 3. The run capacitor was test at minimal rating and replacement is recommended At this point I couldn't trust the company to do the right thing. If they sent an agent out again to double-check then it wouldn't be in their interest to say the first guy got it wrong because that is also their employee plus they'd be losing money. I'm still confused as to how this was completely messed up and have only received offers of a further call out. On top of all of that, when we asked the visiting technician to review another wall unit while he was there, he said it couldn't be done because we only had a coupon for one unit. So we had to schedule a different appointment entirely. Everyone's time is valuable and this was wholly inefficient and made no sense considering I informed the company of the other unit when I made the initial booking. Being told, that's not on my to-do list is beyond ridiculous.
Description of Work: We bought a home and needed the outdoor AC inspected as we had no service history and it was listed as very old in the home inspection.

Call these guys if you crave super high prices and love a receptionist with attitude!
Description of Work: My normal contractor had his hands full with another project. So I called up James A Wheat to ask for a plumber to help me install a new toilet. Simple job, right? Right off the bat, the receptionist was patronizing and antagonistic. After ignoring her attitude and scheduling a visit, I requested an estimate. The receptionist tried to blow me off, saying that they don't like to give prices over the phone because each job is so unique. (Right. A toilet installation?) So I persisted, and asked for a ballpark figure. The receptionist got huffy and told me to hold. She came back a couple minutes later and said, "$500 and up." Seriously? To install a $150 toilet, something my contractor charges $75 for? "Yup." Future potential customers, beware.

Response from James A Wheat & Sons Inc
The least inexpensive toilet we furnish and supply would cost over $150 at a "Big Box Store". We certainly can't sell items for what the item cost us. I really hate to get into an overhead and a fair mark conversation, but if you take the average two hours of labor to remove the old and install a new toilet that cost closer to $175, is $500 out of line? I do not know of a single licensed plumbing Contractor that charges $75 for approximately two hours of labor. Not to mention labor going to a supply house picking up a toilet, delivering it to the home and dropping the old toilet off at a recycling center. I know there are one man shops out there, but I can't even imagine any licensed one man shop does not charge close to $150/hour. I see guys proudly advertise this "going rate" on pickup trucks around the county. With a zero mark up on the toilet, two hours of labor and the toilet would be $450. By the way our toilet installation includes a 3-year parts/tank and LABOR warranty. Includes removal and haul away of the existing toilet. Includes new wax ring seal and a new stainless steel braided supply tube. We used to provide prices over the phone. We stopped doing it years ago. We found that we quoted too many repairs improperly over the phone and that caused problems when we arrived to find a different situation than what was explained over the phone. So we changed, we started charging a small trip fee to come to a home and review the exact problem and provide an exact repair estimate for the specific problem. That trip fee is $35 (plumbing) and is waived upon acceptance of the repair. We can't be everything to everybody. There is no way I can be of service to a customer that is going to write a review like this about a $500 toilet / installation. The price is reasonable. Stating that you can have a toilet installed for $75 is not. As I have mentioned several times in this website. Call us for the job done properly by a certified plumber that takes pride in his work; will take care of your home and property for a reasonable price. If you are looking for the cheapest possible repairs, we are not your Contractor. Michael M. Wheat 301.343.0918 cell 301.670.1944 office mwheat@wheatandsons.com
