Our company is family owned & operated. This statement can mean several things to different people. Let us tell you what that statement means to us. The technician spent about 10 minutes looking at our unit. When he came upstairs he informed me that the unit would not turn on because it needed coolant and as such he couldn't complete the cleaning. Coolant would be over $1500. He stated that the unit was old and should probably be replaced. He did not offer to refund our $79.00. Overall I felt a bit taken by them as they did nothing for what we paid.

Response from James A Wheat & Sons Inc
We were directed to your property to perform an air conditioning inspection as you indicate. But as you mention, we arrived to find a unit that was not functioning. The air conditioning inspection is designed for us to perform an inspection on an operating a/c system. We cannot perform an inspection or cleaning on a system that is not operating and the coupon was not designed or priced for us to diagnose failed systems. What we did was determine that your system was failed due to being completely void of refrigerant. We arrived and stated to perform the inspection and determined the system was not running. We then proceeded to test the system for the cause of failure and determined the system had no refrigerant in it. We found that the system was 20-years old and suggested options to add refrigerant to the system or set up for an estimate to replace the system. The estimate was performed within the next few days. Both options, we stated we would apply the $79 paid to Angie's List towards the work authorized. Your complaint is that we did not perform an inspection, but you really did not call us out for an inspection, you had us out for a failed system. Our diagnostic fee is greater than our discounted Angie's List Air Conditioning Inspection. You purchased an cheaper item to get services that are more expensive at a discounted price. We did not ask for additional fees to perform the proper service, we performed the more expensive service for the discounted price. With the system not operating and needing repair, we cannot perform all the test included in the special. And again, we just performed a more expensive service than you paid for through Angie's List. Then we offered to apply that fee towards the work to be performed. Michael Wheat James A. Wheat & Sons, Inc. mwheat@wheatandsons.com

The service went very well. I had used the company in the past. They did exactly what the deal stated. One technician came out and completed the job in about an hour. The staff did a great job and had good recommendations on how to save energy and water. I had no difficulties scheduling the deal and they showed up on time.

We were very happy with the service wereceived. We knew our central AC unit was on the older side and were nervous the problem was going to be very expensive to fix and not fixable onthe same day. The technician was early, professional and didn't try to sell us on unnecessary fixes. He quickly diagnosed what the problem, fixed it and then gave us an assessment of our unit and potential maintenance issues we may face in near future. Honesty and reliability when your system is already not working is much appreciated. We will use them again for our AC/Heating needs.
Description of Work: Our AC broke during one of the hotter weeks of summer. James Wheat & Sons sent a technician out on the same day we called and our AC fixed within an hour.

I thought the inspection was incredibly poor. The service tech. didn't do most of the 18 points that he supposedly came to do: Check thermostat calibration - No Monitor refrigerant pressure - No Test AC starting capabilities - Maybe Test air conditioner safety controls - Maybe Clean and/or replace standard air filters - No Cleaning and adjustment of blower components - No Measure for correct air flow - No Tighten electrical connections - No Measure volts and amps - Maybe Lubricate all moving parts - No Clean condensate drain - No Measure temperature difference between supply air and return air - No Monitor cooling cycle - No Inspect evaporator coil - No Examine installation quality - Maybe Examine equipment condition area and clearances - Yes Clean condenser coil - No The one thing I did see him do was test the run capacitor on the indoor unit. It was outside of normal range, and he offered to replace the part (not labor) for almost $300. I showed him that the part could be purchased at various retailers for less than $30. He then gave me a spiel about how the first part I purchase from them is inflated, but then subsequent items are at a reduced rate. Snake oil. Another thing I saw him do was refuse to replace or give me any estimate on replacing female disconnect terminals. These are items one can get at Radio Shack, a box for under $5. Something I would expect any service tech to have on hand, or at least have some in the shop. Rather than indicate that it was something simple to replace, he actually called Lennox, the manufacturer of the AC unit, to see if they had the parts. It's an electrical component independent of the manufacturer. I felt that calling Lennox was either an indication he didn't know what he was doing, or he was trying to fool me into thinking it was a bigger deal than it actually was. Assuming the latter, I would guess it was a ploy to get me to freak out and get some overpriced service and parts, similar to the overpriced run cap. Here is the part that he made a HUGE deal about replacing: http://www.radioshack.com/product/index.jsp?productId=12529263. It also seemed that he was unaware that there was an 18 point inspection that was the reason for his visit. Very unprofessional. I felt like this visit was very poor. Of all the things he was supposed to do, he did very few. Think about that: an AC inspection in which he doesn't even look at the evaporator coil, or test the airflow, air temperature differential, or refrigerant pressure. He made a massive deal about a minor electrical component. And he tried to sell me a marked up product at 10x the normal price. It was the opposite of what I expected given the reputation of the provider, and I think that was the worst part. Now I'm back to the list looking for a dependable and trustworthy company. ======== The company responded claiming that the unit was not functioning. That is not true. My unit was functioning at the visit. We were running the unit for the past two months after the visit in fact. The responder indicated that the electrical harness failed; but the tech never diagnosed the electrical harness to have failed on the visit. The tech said he was calling the manufacturer for price and availability of replacement connections, not a harness. It seems weird to call the unit broken to explain a poor 18-point inspection. It's either broken or it's not; and it wasn't. By the way, another red flag from this visit is the fact that the tech never mentioned that the unit had a hard start kit added to it, which is a component clearly not specified in the manufacturer's wiring diagram. (Obviously installed prior to my owning the unit.) It would stand out to anyone doing a quality 18-point inspection that included: "Tighten electrical connections" or "Measure volts and amps" or "Examine installation quality." It's a controversial add-on component that anyone would notice.
Description of Work: They were hired to do an 18-point A/C tune-up. They did maybe five or six of them.

We were directed to your property to perform an air conditioning inspection as you indicate. But as you mention, we arrived to find a unit that was not functioning. The air conditioning inspection is designed for us to perform an inspection on an operating a/c system. We cannot perform an inspection on a system that is not operating and the coupon was not designed or priced for us to diagnose failed systems. What we did was determine that your system was failed due to an electrical harness at the compressor. The harness usually fails due to either a surge or power or an electrical failure at the compressor. We do not "RIG" units up with electrical parts from Radio Shack. Our technician called the manufacturer in order to get the price and availability of the manufacturer replacement harness. We were providing the pricing to replace the failed part of the system with the manufacturer specific part. This was not a stock part, so we had to call the manufacturer. This actually indicates a trained technician was on your jobsite. Your complaint is that we did not perform an inspection, but you really did not call us out for an inspection, you had us out for a failed system. The company, vice the technician, was less accommodating when it came to additional services. I had them price a replacement expansion tank for the boiler and despite the fact that he was there they wanted to charge an additional visit fee as well as a very costly replacement. All in all the estimate was far beyond reason so I found another plumber who did it for a 3rd of their estimate.
Description of Work: The technician did an excellent job on the house inspection and made some recommendations. Several items were repaired and priced on the spot. While generally quite expensive, from my perspective, the convenience of getting a lot of items taken care of, like external spigot, external drain advice, new on/off handles, repair of leaky faucet, replacement of toilet tank equipment, was well worth it. I purchased an annual plan to reduce the overall cost by 10% or so and they have been calling me for three months to do an annual inspection that was part of the deal. We no longer have a long list of items so am not prioritizing the inspection.

The initial service call went very well and the technician was on time. They were very detailed when inspecting the HVAC unit, and spent about an hour going over both inside and outside units. He ultimately concluded the condenser has failed and needs replaced. They were able to obtain a new condenser unit; however, it took several weeks to get it from the Manufacturer. Once it finally arrived, it was replaced in one day. It is nice to have my HVAC working again.

Keith and his partner arrived within the promised window and after a fairly quick inspection they determined that the blower motor was shot. He didn't have the particular part in his truck and wanted to charge $150 "aqusition fee" (cost to get the part from a supplier).I called the office and the fee was waived. There were two sets of prices...one if I took a service contract and one if I didn't. I felt the pressure but more than anything I realized a larger built in mark up was all this posturing represented. The blower was replaced and somehow the circuit board didn't work so that was an additional expense. The blower motor was $900 installed (45 minute job) and the circuit board was another $525 (30 minutes to install). They checked the entire system and it's working properly. I think the service was very good but didn't like the idea of showing a significant discount on the pricing if I signed up for an annual service aggreement.

We really liked this experience. One of their technicians, Keith, came by. He did a more than excellent job. Our motor was flooded and we also needed a new thermostat. He installed a condensate line, replaced the motor, installed the new Honeywell Lyric, and refilled our refrigerant, among other things. I appreciated the most that he did everything in a few hours. He was able to call someone from the company and have them deliver the parts (e.g. Lyric) that we hadn't initially requested and weren't in his truck. He stayed until the job was completely done. Excellent technician, excellent company. I would highly recommend!!

However, the technician had a glitch with his tablet device and could not provide a report of repairs needed and cost estimates. He said he would send it from the office. I called after the weekend to get the information from the inspection, but the office said there was a computer error and a technician would have to come out again to re-do the report. I did not want to go through another inspection and asked for a refund, which the company agreed to. The actual work itself seemed to be ok. However, I asked them to inspect our sump pump and the technician said it was not included in the deal, but I double checked and it was. He did look at the sump pump afterwards.

I do apologize about the computer problem. We do actually have a check list of what was tested. The computer did not save the listed recommendations to address our check list. I am reviewing that with our technician and will attempt to get you as much info as possible. The check list itself will be of good value. However, I will try to get you the pricing to repair the items on the check list shortly. We are willing to return at your convenience to review the check list and provide the pricing and review each item. No charge to return of course. I apologize for the "snafu" with the computer. Sometimes being green / paperless can create its own problems. Thank you. Michael M. Wheat

They came out and did the inspection, and the guy was very professional. However, during the course of the inspection, he said I was low on refrigerant and gave me a quote, which seemed very high. When I asked him if it was the normal price, and he said it was, and I had him refill it. When I did some research the next day, I found out that I had been overcharged. I called them, and they gave me a refund for the extra amount, but I will never use them again.

I would 100% disagree that you were over charged in any manner. I have attached our technicians notes below. We tested your system (unit located on the roof), added refrigerant to the system and replaced a pump. The entire job took over three hours to perform. In your complaint to my office by email and your review listed here on Angie's List, you only mention adding refrigerant. We also replaced a pump that cost over $100 for the pump alone. I have no doubt that when you called around price shopping, you were not comparing apples to apples. I can also call around all day and find companies that charge less and some that charge more than we do. The fact is we performed significant work for you at a fair value for the services we provided. We gave you the pricing upfront and you authorized that pricing before we performed any work. We even applied the money paid to Angie's List to our repair cost. We sent you an email confirmation of our appointment, showed up at the scheduled time frame, performed the work and additional unexpected work in one visit, provided you emailed typed receipts that you can read and easily save, and followed up our visit with an email verifying everything was satisfactory completed. This poor review ("C" is a poor review in our opinion) is completely a result of a price complaint. If you had read any of our reviews, you would know that we are not going to be the cheapest company in town. We will be the first to admit that you can find cheaper one man or even larger shops that charge less but simply do not provide the type of service we do. Your review even clearly affirms this. Read our reviews, we are the best service company in town. If you are looking for the cheapest repairs, do not call us. If you are having a problem that nobody else can fix, call us. If your air conditioner runs all day or you have uncomfortable rooms or floors, but your existing HVAC Company says everything is fine, calls us. I 100% feel that we are the best company in town. I have rarely ever heard of the best of anything being also referred to as the cheapest. Michael M. Wheat Our Technicians Notes: Arrived on site performed Angie's list a/c inspection. Found air handler suspended in the ceiling. The way the air handler is installed we cannot remove the access door to check electrical properly. I advised customer of this and informed him that if a repair is needed we will have to drop the air handler from the ceiling. No warranty. Checked heat pump located on the roof top. Found system about 1 lb low on refrigerant. Compressor also draws high amps during start up. Quoted customer to add refrigerant and install a start assist kit. Gave prices both with and without contract. Customer chose to add refrigerant without purchase of a contract. Added refrigerant. While doing so the condensate pump discharged. Found that the condensate pump is broken at the nipple and shooting water everywhere. Replaced pump. 1 year warranty on pump and labor. No warranty on system due to possible refrigerant leak.
