My experience with Cool Breeze Heating and Air Conditioning went fine, but they were supposed to come back the next day to replace the humidifier filter and they never came back. I haven't had a chance to call them back yet. Otherwise, they didn't try to upsell or do anything like that. Nothing really exceptional, good or bad, occurred.

First, Ron came out promptly on a Sunday afternoon to diagnose the problem with the boiler. It was right before we were hit with a big snowstorm. He arranged for a heating technician and plumber to come the next day. Both arrived in spite of snow that had closed down other businesses. These technicians were skilled, efficient and extremely courteous. In 20 years of living in this 100+ year old house, no heating company has ever taken the time to thoroughly check the radiators. In fact, this company got our bathroom radiator warm -- for the first time since we've lived in the house! He made recommendations for future maintenance and repairs. Costs seemed more than reasonable. I highly recommend this company and plan to make them our HVAC and plumbing service of first choice.
Description of Work: Diagnosed reasons our boiler was not functioning; made appropriate repairs/parts replacement. Also sent out plumber to repair part of a toilet that had caused a major flood on the lower level of our house.

It was great. They were very thorough, courteous, and knowledgeable. I was having issues with my heater and they pin-pointed the issues for me. They got the job done in about an hour. They sent one guy out to do the job and he was very professional. He was able to do the tune-up and gave me a consultation on other things I may need to have done.

Ronnie came on Sunday to discuss the project and provided an offer right on the spot. The offer was very competitive and we decided to proceed right away the following day on Monday morning. The team worked very hard from 8:45 am till 9 pm and replaced the whole HVAC system. So far so good and we are quite happy with the service provided and would strongly recommend Ronnie and his team. We haven't received the promised Pepco discount and inspection yet and will update this review when completed.

The company co-manager, Ron, called me a couple of days after his technician completed a "tune up" deal I purchase earlier. I explained that I was researching and comparing costs with other HVAC companies for a new HVAC replacement. He offered me a VERY competitive offer and I accepted. I still had a different company visit and give me an estimate. When I told them the deal that Cool Breeze offered, they themselves even admitted that it was a good deal and they couldn't match it. Ron ordered the system and had his guys out to install it 4 business days later. The installers were 15-30 min late, but no biggie since I knew it'd take all day. They were courteous and thorough. My wife runs a daycare out of our home and it wasn't a huge interruption. They laid cloth on the carpet and got to work. One worked outside (during a heavy snow) on the AC while the other worked on the furnace. They needed no help or info from us--they worked steadily with only 1 short break. They did stay an hour or two extra than planned but kept us informed. They removed old furnace and AC unit, flushed the AC cooper line, and properly connected vents with the right adapters--very clean looking now. They also installed a new thermostat with is slightly better than my original one. After the job they explained everything to me. They moved the original "hidden" electrical switch from the side of the furnace to a prominent, front position (no more fiddling around to try to find the switch). They also installed a hose line w/pump for the AC condensation. This was another bonus since I originally had a sagging PVC pipe arrangement snaked around the utility room to the drain. I then was given a 3-ring binder with all the manuals, which I thought was a nice, professional touch. I'm waiting to see the first gas bill to see how much of a difference I'll have back in my pocket. Overall, I'm more than happy with the new system and the experience. Installers did a fantastic job. When speaking with Ron I know that he's an "old school" business man who knows how to take care of the customer--not out to make a quick buck. That is very hard to find these days. He worked with me on the price and offered a deal I couldn't refuse. Hopefully it won't be necessary anytime soon, but I'd definitely do business with Cool Breeze again. I think they offer plumbing services that I may need--they'll be my first call.
Description of Work: Cool Breeze initially performed a tune up on furnace--we were experiencing explosion type noises. It was suggested that we replace the system as it was 25+ years old. We ended up taking a "can't refuse" offer and had entire furnace and AC system installed.

Cool Breeze must be sitting on its laurels. The employees of this company consistently displayed an "I don't care whether you use us or not" attitude. They got the job done. but their staff were not professional, personable, or punctual. I've written several rave reviews of other companies, either on Angies or on checkbook.org. I don't like writing reviews like the following, but I think it is my responsibility as part of the community of reviewers to do so. We contacted them on the advice of Angie's List. They had received great reviews. But when we had to reschedule our appointment due to a family health emergency, we couldn't get them on the telephone. . The main telephone rang without a reply - no answering machine. When they called later, we made a second appointment. Then, they cancelled that one at the last minute, saying they were too busy to make the scheduled appointment. We nad to finally reschedule for a Saturday afternoon. The work that was done was good; they replaced the kitchen faucet. The labor charge was $155, and the faucet was charged at $220. They took an hour to replace the faucet. This is higher than any other plumber we have used in the past 10 years, but we haven't had a kitchen faucet replaced, so we can't verify if this is pricey or on par. What concerned us was the lack of interest of the plumber. We noted that we had several other items we would like to have fixed, and he appeared uninterested in even looking at them. I had to ask him three times to look at the diverter handle in our bathroom, and even then, he seemed uninterested in even giving us a quote to fix it. He never looked at the instahot unit in our kitchen sink, although I asked him if he could repair or replace it. THEN.... Since we are in the midst of getting quotes for replacing our entire HVAC system and water heating system, we asked the lumber "Tony" if Cool Breeze would like to give us one last quote before we made the decision. He called "Ron." Ron asked him where I lived. Tony replied "near Roland." Ron replied, "Well, then, we'll charge them more." I overheard this, and told them to forget about it. Tony handed his phone to me, and I said that I felt uncomfortable asking a person for a quote who just said that to his coworker. He just laughed and said it was a joke. He offered to come by on Monday at 4PM to give me an estimate. I agreed. Nobody called to confirm the appointment on Monday. By 4:20, I had given up on Cool Breeze. I called the main number to ask where "Ron" was. Again, the number rang no reply. I called the second number, and got a "Roland" or "Ronin". He knew nothing about the appointment. He called Ron. Again, I overheard them trying to remember what appointment this was. (They should really get a hold button.) I spoke up and said I had made the appointment on Saturday when Tony was here, Roland said that Ron had set a time of arrival BETWEEN 4 and 5. I do not recall this. I cancelled the appointment. Ron still showed up at 4:45PM with a nonchalant attitude, an unapologetic approach, a shrug, and a whole pocketful of excuses (e.g, "my phone died", "everybody else can get through to our office fine" and "I don't make appointments to show up at a certain time because traffic is too unpredictable." Every thing that he said convinced me that in his mind, he was doing us a favor to do business with him. I sent him away, and sat down to write this experience up. Angie's List is great, but sometimes, as in this case, highly rated companies forget that their reputation is only as good as their last customer encounter. I'm taking the time to describe this experience to help us all keep historical ratings in perspective. I'll be spending my money with a company that demonstrated punctuality, personal attention, and professionalism.

Response from Cool Breeze Plumbing Heating & Air Conditioning
Even though this is the worst review my company has received is thirty three years of business, we are happy that you were satisfied with the plumbing work that was completed at your home. I did tell our plumber working in your home to tell you that we would charge you more if you knew Ronen ( the other owner on the plumbing side); I explained to you that this was a joke and you apologized blaming a long plane flight for your reaction. When we made an appointment with you between four and five that day we arrived before five and was surprised at your reaction. I was having problems with my phone and was not able to receive the call from my office that you had canceled and were upset because of the scheduling. We care a great deal about every customer and give it our all every day. Please except our sincere apologies for not performing to your expectations. My system was very complicated and poorly installed by the original home developer. Cool Breeze came back enough times to fully assess the system's shortcomings and propose a comprehensive solution, one that was sensitive to the impact on my home and my budget.
Description of Work: Cool Breeze assessed an underperforming system, discovered uninsulated ducts, low settings for the unit, and an unconnected register. They remedied all of the above.

Everything went well. The technician checked the internal unit, the breaker box, the thermostat, and the heat pump. When an issue was found at the heat pump, he quickly tracked the issue to the thermostat and fixed it. There was initially a payment problem problem in that the "tune up" only covered inspection, not any actual repair work. The charge would have been 79$ less the tune-up payment (79-59$=20$ outstanding to pay), but the manager waived that since it was a quick repair and since the additional charge had not been explained up front. While irritating, the confusion over the payment was handled professionally.
Description of Work: I got their 59$ heat system tune up deal off of angies list. They checked everything, found that the heat pump wasn't working properly, and tracked the issue to an improperly configured thermostat (my fault). The technician quickly reset the thermostat (even though he wasn't familiar with the specific model and brand) and got the system working. There was a problem in that the "tune up" only covered inspection, not any actual repair work. The charge would have been 79$ less the tune-up payment (20$ outstanding to pay), but the manager waived that since it was a quick repair and since the additional charge had not been explained up front.

I searched Angie's List for all HVAC companies that have 24 hour emergency service. According to Cool Breeze's profile, they have 24 hour emergency service so I gave them a call. Someone did pick up and I told them that my heater just broke and I was looking for emergency service. The man on the other line curtly replied, "Call back first thing tomorrow morning." I was confused because I thought they provide emergency service. He replied no and that I should call back first thing tomorrow morning. I asked what time that would be and he said 10 AM. According to their Angie's List profile, they open on Sunday at 7 AM, not 10 AM. I don't know why the person lied and said 10 AM instead of 7 AM. In any case, the man was curt, rude, and obviously did not want to be bothered at 1 AM in the morning, which I understand. But don't advertise that you conduct emergency HVAC appointments when you don't. I ended up calling another company that properly advertised emergency service and I am currently awaiting their arrival at 1:45 AM.

Setting up the appointment went fine - I purchased an Angie's list coupon for a $49 diagnostic service call and scheduled it on the phone within minutes. The night before the appointment it snowed and the appointment time window was pushed back by 2 hours in the morning, which I thought was reasonable - but the tech arrived 1.5 hours after the end of the pushed back time window (5.5 hours after I started to expect him originally), and I never received any notice beyond the initial 2 hour delay until he was just about to arrive. The tech came in and did seem to know what he was doing - but he asked a bunch of times if I wanted an estimate for a brand new heat pump, even asking before he had diagnosed any problems with my current one. After he finished the diagnosis, he told me that my "diagnostic service call coupon" was only good for repairs and installations, and charged me $118.50. He told me that his manager "Ron" would be coming by (even) later to give me accurate repair estimates AND an estimate for a new heat pump, but refused to give me Ron's phone number. Ron never came. I don't have accurate repair estimates. All I have is an apparently unaccepted coupon, a rough verbal estimate, and a partly legible $118.50 diagnosis description. The tech also had me sign some sheet for "free maintenance reminders", but now on closer inspection it appears to actually be advanced authorization for them to perform maintenance services.

Cool Breeze technician came out the evening of the day we called (11/26). He diagnosed the problem with our radiator heating system and said that he needed to order a part to fix the system. The next day we called to find out status and learned that they would come out later the same day to fix the system. This was the day before Thanksgiving. They arrived around 3 in the afternoon and proceeded to fix our system (replaced the broken valve, then went to each radiator to bleed it). The work took several hours but Ronen, the Cool Breeze plumber, knew exactly what he was doing and wasted no time. We now have a warm house with a working radiator heating system. The system hasn't worked this well in years. Thank you, Cool Breeze!
Description of Work: The provider diagnosed the problem with our heating system (boiler with cast iron radiators/historic house). They then ordered the part (water valve) and came back the next day to install it, bleed the radiators, and insure we had heat.

Cool Breeze was very professional and punctual: they clearly explained what they could and could not do with our existing single-zone system and ductwork, and what the alternatives were [e.g., adding dampers, switching to a two-zone system]. They showed up on time, finished on time, and the workers were respectful of the fact that they were working in a home vs. a commercial construction site. Before going forward with Cool Breeze, we obtained proposals from two other HVAC companies. Cool Breeze's prices were were competitive. We'd definitely use this company again.

We have a basement apartment in a row house. Tenants complained - no heat. Cool Breeze came out the next day to check out the unit. It could have been fixed with a complete cleaning and replacement of several electrical components. He did upsell me to the full replacement - but it was mostly my decision. They came out two days later. Unfortunately, they did not confirm the time that they were going to show up. The business manager was out sick - I had to call myself to confirm the time myself - I guess those things can happen in a smaller shop - but I did score them a little lower for that. End result - they quoted me $4800 - It ended up a little less. They did not charge me for a new thermostat nor the initial service call. It all ended well and I was satisfied.
