We had gotten several quotes, recommendations from our real estate agents, and read reviews on Angie's List and decided to go with Commonwealth. They came on time, finished early, were polite, and careful with our household items. No items were damaged. I have already enthusiastically recommended them to friend who are considering moving.

I chose these movers because of their high ratings from others. Good movers with whom I have had previous excellent experiences like Titan, do not cross statelines. This was not a good experience given the cost and I would never use them again. Cost: When I got the estimate, he told me it was just an estimate. That I would pay actual time--- if the time went less, it would be less. And if the time went more, it would be more, but up to a dollar value ceiling. Basically, the move took much less time than anticipated because I was very organized and there was little furniture and mostly boxes. But they charged me the entire value of the estimate at the end anyway. I was so tired from the move and from dealing with them, I did not fight about it. But basically they gouged me. I have a good handle on costs because I have moved these exact belongings several times in the Northern VA area. Care: Movers banged up all walls in the moveout townhome even though I told them I was renting and would have to make or pay for repairs. They were more careful with the move in home.Begged them to take special care with $4000 Pilates reformer. Mechanism is fragile; costs exhorbitant amounts to repair. They took it apart without me, even though I asked to be with them when they disassembled it. Then when they reassembled, the same thing happened---I walked in on one guy repeatedly banging it trying to get it back together. They damaged the mechanism and I now have to pay to fix it which was totally unnecessary.I have an adjustable bed which is a challenge to get up and down stairs. Previously, Titan folks did a great job as opposed to the Commonwealth men who banged up the bed, dragged the mattress and marked the walls with it. Packing. One week before move, I asked for help packing. It never occurred to me to ask for professional packers. They sent the crew of men that ultimately moved me.Most of them threw my things into boxes without care and without wrapping most things. As a result most of my kitchen items got manhandled and banged up. Not enough for insurance claim, but enough to be really annoying when I use them every day---especially since packing cost me $1200. Professionalism: I am in my 60's and an executive and the van driver kept calling me "Mama".
Description of Work: The provider packed about one third of a medium sized town house and moved the belongings 70 miles.

We are sorry you had a bad experience with us. It is the exception rather than rule. If you had damage that you described, why would you not call us to fix it. We can't handle a problem if we do not know it exists. We are always available to solve problems before, during, and after a move. This review is the first we heard of your dissatisfaction. We have always sent our movers out as packers with great results. Again, we apologize if we let you down.

Commonwealth was a pleasure to work with. They handled all of our items with care. They packed our wine glasses and artwork carefully. We have two young children who made the move more difficult, but Commonwealth handled everything very well. We only moved six blocks, but we live in the city, so it was not an "easy" six-block move. Again, they handled everything well. I would definitely use them again.

With only one weeks notice and a recommendation we booked Commonwealth Movers. Julio, Joe and Enrique showed up ready to work. They got stuck in traffic on the way to Alexandria but I got a call letting me know. They apologized immediately upon arrival as well and were ready to work. Common courtesy goes a long way! Five hours of packing, one hour of actual moving and one fifteen minute break and they were done! Well worth every penny. They were much more efficient than I would have been. In addition they were friendly and very positive. Will always use them and recommend them to everyone we know!!! Oh and we have 60 stairs no elevator and not one complaint!

,My husband and I moved from a townhouse to a single family home, and hired Commonwealth Movers to move only the largest and/or heaviest pieces, which are A LOT. The estimate allowed for 4 people for 6 hours to arrive between 8:30 and 9:00 on the morning of February 22nd, 2013. The truck pulled up at exactly 8:30 (bonus!) and 6 people actually came in and began covering and hauling away those pieces immediately. The team work they demonstrated was absolutely unmatched by any other moving team I have ever seen. They were not only punctual, but extremely efficient, polite, careful, and very fast. They managed to move all of the pieces we identified for the estimate as well as an additional 10 - 15 items we were going to take ourselves, but asked them to instead, and were more than happy to. The entire move took less than 4 hours, and cost almost $2,000 LESS than the estimate. If we ever move again, I won't have to look anywhere else for efficient, reliable and capable movers. I will ONLY consider Commonwealth Movers...

The move went extremely well. Although Commonwealth was not the least expensive of the several estimates we got, we were particularly impressed with the fact that they proposed to pack on one day, load on a second day and then transport and unload on a third day. Other movers had proposed to load, transport and unload all in one day and we thought that would put too much of a burden on the personnel involved, which could well lead to less than perfect work. Commonwealth also proposed to use a second truck if cramming everything into one truck would not work. (It turned out that everything did fit in one truck.) Commonwealth's packers and movers were pleasant, professional and willing to accommodate our needs -- even moving several heavy pieces of furniture to different locations in our new house until we found what we thought was the best location for each piece. The packing was done very well. We had a large quantity of fragile glassware and many ceramic pots and bowls but nothing was broken and none of our furniture was damaged in any way. All in all, we felt that Commonwealth did an excellent job and we would have no hesitation in recommending them to others.
Description of Work: We moved a four/five bedroom house from a two level house in the Alexandria, VA area to a very large, two level house in a retirement community in Kennett Square, PA. We packed and moved all of our art work, electronics and open liquid containers. Commonwealth Movers packed and moved everything else.

I used Commonwealth to move our office back in 2009 and really thought they did a great job, so we hired them when we did our home move as well. I got other quotes, and found them to all be pretty close. We packed all our stuff, except clothes (they provide free wardrobe boxes for that). They guys were friendly, helpful and efficient. We also had them unload our Pack Rat container (which we mentioned during the estimate). They finished in the time expected and within the estimate range. I would recommend them to others and use them again... though I don't want to move again for a LOOOONG time. :)

Great. Commonwealth came to our apartment to provide an estimate for our move. The move went smoothly. The move team was great. Only one minor problem: the team forgot to replace the wheels on our television cart. We called the next day, and the office staff was able to reach the move team and tell us where the wheels were so we could replace them ourselves.

Commonwealth had been recommended to us by friends when we were planning our move. We had gotten various quotes and they were in the middle of the price range. On the day of our move, they were on time, efficient, hard working and professional. They were able to complete the move under their bid and all of our items arrived safely. Prior to our move, we did have some trouble communicating with them by phone, but the service on the day of the move couldn't have better. We would definitely recommend them.

I liked Kevin from the start because he was punctual and businesslike. He also educated us about getting supplemental insurance because no mover covers 100% of an item's replacement value (more like $50 per item unless you get extra coverage, which is not that expensive.) While Commonwealth is a well-rated mover on both AL and Washington Checkbook, I reasoned that anyone can make mistakes, and better safe than sorry. The other two movers I talked with did not discuss insurance or coverage until I went back to them and asked. The movers showed up promptly at 9 am on moving day and went right to work. We were happily surprised to have six men on the job instead of the five promised. They were a very cheerful, cooperative, hardworking group. Couldn't have asked for a better group of guys. They worked solidly through till 4:20, didn't really even take a lunch break. All of our items were placed exactly where we requested, even repositioned when we asked. We weren't completely packed, but the men from Commonwealth were nice enough to wrap open boxes in plastic and transport them. They also found items in the garage that my husband had forgotten to bring down from storage, and they left a few boxes for pantry items we hadn't packed. For their exceptional service, we tipped each man $30 (total of $180). UPDATE: A little more than a month after the move, we needed to transfer a large dresser, one of our nicest pieces of furniture, from the lower level to the main level. As soon as we got the dresser out in the light, I saw all kinds of damage to it that hadn't been apparent in the darker light downstairs. I am really disappointed to find this. Also, a cheap desk of my husband's was damaged in the move, but again, didn't notice it until a couple days later. My advice to anyone using professional movers--don't let them leave until you have carefully inspected every piece of furniture! It's just so hard to do after a long, exhausting day.
Description of Work: Commonwealth performed a local move for us, 8 miles between the two houses. We are a family of four and moved from one single family home to another. They brought two large trucks and six men.

They arrived punctually at 9:00 a.m., as planned, and worked steadily all day with only a short lunch break even though we had a freakishly hot day for early April and the temperature reached 92 degrees. We had packed or moved previously some small items, but Commonwealth packed up the entire contents of the kitchen and all of the glassware and china. When I unpacked all that they had packed later that evening and the next day, nothing was damaged. Furniture, many boxes of books and miscellaneous items, wardrobe containers---everything arrived safely at the new house and the payment was exactly what was quoted in their estimate. The workers were thoughtful, good natured, professional, patient, and amazingly strong.
Description of Work: This was not my move but my daughter's move from one house in Reston to another. I helped on the actual day of the event and was with her and the Commonwealth Movers crew throughout the day both at the old residence and the new one. My daughter negotiated the price with them previous to the move. She found them responsive and easy to work with.

They have always done a good job. My husband has used them 3 times and I have used them twice. We moved in together into an apartment and then we bought a house. My husband was the one who originally contacted them. They were great. They were on time. They worked really hard. They were pretty careful while moving the stuff. There were 3 guys who worked really hard. They wanted to make sure they were doing the work as we wanted them to do so they asked us every time they brought in the things.

Commonwealth did a visual of our apt and provided us with an estimate, which was exactly on target. They accepted a personal check at the end of the move. The moving team of four men seemed highly experienced and had been with the company a number of years. The moving team was very quick and efficient. The time it took was exactly as had been estimated. We did notice that the moving team paid absolutely no attention to the fact that many boxes had 4"X6" international fragile labels on them. We observed that many boxes, marked fragile, were placed on their sides and even upside down. Only two casualites - the moving team pointed out the damaged base of a floor lamp, which they accidentally then dropped, which damaged the lights. Since the lamp base could not have been prepared, we just threw the floor lamp away and were ok with it. We did not notice until the evening of the move (after the move had been completed) that an old dresser had seven places where the veneer had been totally taken off - one spot was 3" X 1/2" long. Not sure how that happened if they shrink wrapped it, although if the veneer was brittle, jarring could possibly have caused the veneer to come off. Fortunately, it is not an expensive piece, so I will probably get a wood marking pen and see if I can color in some of the sheared off areas. I decided not to call Commonwealth Movers about it the next day because its my word against their movers' words and the dresser is old and not an antique by any means.

Commonwealth did a great job for us from start to finish. They came out and gave us a quote in a timely manner. On moving day, even though it was pouring rain and it was a long distance from our house to the van, they were completely professional and there were no complaints about the awful conditions. They did their best to protect our items and our houses (old and new) from the elements and from muddy, wet feet. Everything was moved safely and in one piece. Although there were supposed to only be three movers, five showed up, which was a good thing in the end. They completed their work right as scheduled, which probably would have been tough with only three movers considering the conditions. Overall, we had a great experience with Commonwealth and have already recommended them to friends who are moving in a few months.

The move went extremely well. Carlos, the team lead, was excellent. The movers were very careful with all the furniture pieces and were also very careful with the house (both floors and walls). For example, to protect the wood floors, they put furniture pads beneath heavy furniture pieces when they moved them. The movers also wrapped the couch and other furniture pieces in plastic wrap. They had great attention to detail -- for example, we had identical shelves in several rooms and when they moved the shelves into the new house, they could tell us which room those particular shelves had been in in the old house. They also provided (free of charge) and packed 2 additional wardrobe boxes for us when they noticed that there were still coats in the hall closet and clothes in one of the bedroom closets. The movers also worked extremely quickly. The entire move (furniture from 3 bedrooms, 1 den, 1 family room, 1 LR and 1 DR plus 9 wardrobe boxes, 73 packed boxes and 3 large rugs and rug pads) from a 3-story house to another 3-story house, took about 5.5 hours. The total time to move was less than the low end of the estimated time that the company had given. The total cost of the move therefore came in about $100 less than the low end of the cost estimate. We would definitely use them again and would highly recommend them to anyone looking to move locally.
Description of Work: Commonwealth Movers moved all our furniture and boxes that we packed ourselves from a 3 bedroom house in Silver Spring to another house in Silver Spring.
