What happened with them was I rebuilt an engine, I asked the owner, what he would charge to get this in and he was a friend of mine, he said $350. Well it came to $1900 and the thing what got me was, I asked them why they didn’t tell me when the price started going up. They should have called me saying, it was this issue or that issue but he never called me. When I got up to pick my car, they gave me the bill and I was shocked. They told me $350 and said if it was higher than that, they would let me know which he didn’t. Not only that, I looked at the bill and I asked why he would change the oil in the engine if he knew that I had rebuild the engine with a new filter on it. He said well he had to be safe, I said well did the mechanic check the oil before he changed it and he said no, and that cost me another $20. Then, when they put the engine in, they put the transmission back in, I had it rebuilt and it had maybe 1900 miles on it, they called me and said he your transmission went out. I think what happened was and I should have pursued it, when I pulled the engine out, I took all the transmission tool out of the transmission thinking that any mechanic would check to see if there was transmission fluid in it which they didn’t, so that cost me another $1900. Between the engine and the transmission which I would swear my life on that they didn’t check the transmission fluid before they installed it and ran it, cost me almost $3000 to have this engine and transmission put back in. I trusted this guy because I had been dealing with him, when he was working with somebody else he was an honest guy but as soon as he started working for himself, the honesty went out the window. I had had a lot of my vehicles up there and I had taken my one truck up there and said I needed the front wheel bearings replaced on it, that is what they told me was wrong and I asked him what is it going to cost me for a wheel and he said $150. Well he calculated it wrong and it cost me $350 per wheel and then at a later time, the dry shaft went off and do you believe that it wasn’t the wheel bearing, it was the dry shaft in the first place. So I have had some real nightmares there.

With the second company's correction of the power-steer electrical connection, all has been well since.
Description of Work: I just joined Angie's List. My power steering failed about a year or two ago. I contacted several repair shops including Hometown Auto and got the same fee from all" $1000.00. I chose Hometown Auto because they were closest to my house. The repaired my car in timely fashion. However when I drove my "repaired" car from their shop, my Lexus with power-steering drove like and old truck: I had to "muscle" the steering wheel to make and kind of turn. I went back to the shop and told them about the problem. They informed me that it would take time for the new rack to break in. I accepted that, but I got no improvement. They told me to bring the car in and leave it, but that I needed an oil change and new transmission. I told them that neither of those things bore any relation to my power steering problem and refused them. When I came back to pick up my car, the presented me with a $100+ bill for services. I felt compelled to pay them in order to get car back. The I brought my car to another repair which had done excellent work in the past. and told them my experience. I left my car with them and was told later when I called that my car had been repaired. When I went there to pick up my car, they told me the problem was that the electrical connected to the power-steering mechanism had been plugged in backwards. Also, the only other new thing on the car aside from the power-steering mechanism was a new oil filter. This secondary service was great, but it added another $100 to my cost of the "$1000 repair".
