Description of Work: I wish I had used Shaw Computers first before another company had damaged my dead hard drive. He was able to recover about 85% of the data, and showed and explained to me why the other percentage was not able to be salvaged. Very diligent about the data restore!

I found Phil on Angie's List and called him after a computer repair shop told me there was no way to get the data off the flash/thumb drive. After I gave him the flash drive, he called a day or two later and told me that after working on it, he wasn't able to get the files yet, but there were still other options we could try, however, they would be really expensive. I asked if he could get an estimate for me first before I decided what I wanted to do. Phil called again the next evening and said he tried working on it again just to make sure he did all he could -- and he was able to get the flash drive working again and copied all the files for me to a new flash drive. He's a really nice guy... he was really excited that he was able to get the thing to work again and get all my data back. And I have now learned why it's important to keep backup files of everything, include those on USB flash drives. As for cost -- I have no real basis to compare or know what is a reasonable cost. I was willing to pay a lot due to the importance of the files, and I know he worked on it several times -- so while it was expensive, I was comfortable with the cost.
Description of Work: Recovered all the data (files, pictures, etc.) from a USB flash/thumb drive that stopped working.

Very well. I would recommend this company to anyone requiring data recovery.
Description of Work: My hard drive was damaged and needed special equipment to recover data. A reliable Tech Expert recommended Shaw Computer Services. I contacted Phil Shaw, owner. He successfully recovered most data from the damaged disk & transferred the data onto my external hard drive.

Hard drive crash? Just take your drive to Phil Shaw! Don't bother looking elsewhere! It still happens to some of us - the hard drive crashes and we don't have some important files backed up. The uncertainty over what is permanently lost gnaws at us. If it's work stuff, especially for a client, the situation can be dire (as was mine). Phil had all my important files recovered LESS THAN 6 HOURS after I delivered my laptop to him - ON FRIDAY AFTERNOON!!! You can't get this kind of quick attention anywhere else I know of, at least in the Baltimore/Washington region. Phil seems to be the only person in the area to have this kind of combination and responsiveness and ability. Phil knows data recovery - he says it's his specialty. He even does data recovery for some of the local computer repair shops because that's not their bag, and he's good at it. So CUT OUT THE MIDDLEMAN and GET LIGHTNING FAST SERVICE! CUSTOMER SERVICE: Part of Phil's effort involved calling me several times to let me know about progress and to discuss the most important files to get. We had 2 or 3 talks within a few hours after I dropped my machine off. Compare that kind of service to what I experienced for 3 days before I looked for Phil. Machine to local shop, had to call for status 2 days later (Thursday), they said the drive was only 2% imaged and that recovery can take up to 3 weeks in some cases - call back Monday. I called Friday instead - status was now 3% - I knew I had to get my macine back and find someone else. Angie's List and Phil Shaw to the rescue. PRICE: The standard (from what I understand) $375 fee is ABOUT HALF THE AMOUNT the national data recovery experts charge, and if you're local, Phil is MUCH FASTER. I couldn't have been happier - or any more relieved - to find Phil and get my files fast!

I had an external hard drive that had refused to boot (the dreaded spinning/clicking noise). I contacted national data recovery companies, who quoted me minimum costs from $750 - $1,500. Phil not only came to pick the drive up from me but, by taking the most conservative approach first, managed to cure the problem at around half the cost of other outfits. Part of this was the fact that the drive was probably not broken in the way I had initially thought, but diagnosis at a lower rate was a service I was happy with. Add in his responsiveness, professionalism, and ease of working, and I would gladly use Phil again.

Phil used his network of resources to track down the software needed to do the job, and triple checked the disks to make sure all data was extracted. I left with thumb drive (which I provided) of all my long-lost files. He took on the job despite the fact that the equipment (drives), disks, and software were obsolete, and got the job done through expertise and persistence.
Description of Work: Phil rescued some long lost photo files from iOmega Zip Disk storage, which involved hunting down obsolete driver software and processing about two dozen disks which I hadn't been able to access, because of system obsolescence, for about a decade.

Mr. Shaw got the job done at an incredibly fair price. I had recently written a Mass and now it is saved. 15 years of our church's music used during the mass are now saved. All of the important records I need for everyday use are now saved. Mr. Shaw is to be commended for such prompt and professional service. I definitely recommend him to others needing document recovery services. Good job!

Thank you for the nice review. This is another case of the power of the PC3000. Your platters had multiple scratches and we were able to get in and get the data that was important to you before the heads crashed and made getting your data back much harder or impossible.

If you are reading this, you are likely in trouble, unless you like to read reviews about data recovery specialists and your computer has not crashed. If you just like reading these reviews, are not in need of data recovery and don't have a good backup system, stop reading reviews and get one now! So, I am my wife's tech support for her small business that relies on data and report-writing, and it is now clear I was not the best tech support for my wife because I never put a good backup plan in place (I would occasionally backup documents on thumb drives, etc). Our Toshiba Satellite S955-S5373 suddenly crashed the morning of Thursday, January 23rd ("No Bootable Device" at startup), and it was determined by a computer repair technician on Sunday, January 26th to be a physical hard drive failure (rather than a "logical failure," when the BIOS can see your hard drive, but is unable to access its data), and I was referred to Phil from this technician. Phil immediately responded, asking me to bring him the hard drive and an external hard drive on that Sunday at 2:30pm. He spent hours working on the data recovery and contacted me the next morning with the good news that our data was nearly 100% recovered. His service was highly personalized, he was incredibly responsive, always answering the phone or calling right back, and he seemed to make it his mission to recover our data, displaying excitement when he was able to recover the data. He was enthusiastic, friendly, patient, and willing to answer any questions I had. To the best of my understanding, I had a crashing hard drive head that was dying and threatening to scratch the hard drive platter, which would have erased any data on the platter forever. He has saved me and my wife an immense amount of trouble and saved my wife's business from all the problems associated with data loss. I hope I don't need Phil's services again in the future, but if I need data recovery again, I will without question hire him again.

Thank you for the nice review. Our success at getting your data back shows the power of the PC3000 at recovering data from drives that other hardware and software just can't get. It is an incredibly powerful tool.

I accidentally erased all the pictures I took in Hawaii in August. On a Saturday I called Phil Shaw of Shaw Computer Services for help. He was available right away to help me. He was able to recover all my pictures and took the time to show me what he had recovered to make sure that he had all the picutres from the memory card. He also made sure that I was satisfied with the work he did. I would recommend him to anyone trying to recover pictures from a memory card.
